Max Pearson presents a collection of this week's Witness History episodes from the BBC World Service. Our guest is Ilaria Favretto, Affiliate Professor at Kingston University in London, who tells us about the history of workers' protests across Europe. The programme begins with a former union leader describing Italy's 'Hot Autumn' of 1969 when protests erupted. Then, we hear the archaeologist Howard Carter's remarkable account of opening the burial chamber of Tutankhamun, the Egyptian Pharaoh, 100 years ago. In the second half of the programme, we hear about the creation of Pokémon, and the coronation of Denmark's first Queen in 600 years. Finally, an American woman tells us how she became a Muay Thai boxing champion. Contributors: Ilaria Favretto - Affiliate Professor at Kingston University in London. Renzo Baricelli - Italian union leader. Howard Carter - British archaeologist. Akihito Tomisawa - Pokémon developer. Kjeld Olesen - Danish politician. Sylvie Von Duuglas-Ittu - Muay Thai boxer.

In 1969 and 1970, thousands of workers in Italy went on strike, protesting against low pay and poor working conditions. It became known as the ‘Hot Autumn'. Renzo Baricelli represented tyre workers at the Pirelli rubber factory in Milan, one of the main centres of protest. He tells Vicky Farncombe how he had to step in when angry workers with hammers were threatening to smash up the factory. (Photo: Workers protesting in Milan during the 'Hot Autumn'. Mary Dawson: Affect & Ageing in Barbara Pym's ‘Quartet in Autumn'

Welcome back to the Technecast! Our theme for this month is ‘Affect', thinking about feelings, forces, and in-between states. Since the affective turn in the early 1990s, the humanities and social sciences have witnessed a profound and renewed interest in how feelings function, how they move, stick to, and shape bodies (both human and non-human) and worlds. We are delighted to welcome Mary Dawson to the Technecast for our first episode on affect. This episode explores the idea of aging as a form of affective potential through a reading of Barbara Pym's ‘Quartet in Autumn' (1977). In contemporary society getting old is seen as a problem and aged bodies are often unsettling reminders of a future understood in terms of loss and decline. In contrast, thinking about ageing through Pym's ‘Quartet' and Gilles Deleuze's work on affect and sense suggests an alternative perspective on growing older. Pym's novel is about four colleagues approaching retirement. Through a close analysis of the text, this essay shows how nonsense in ‘Quartet' goes beyond deconstructing social conceptions of ageing to re-think what it means to grow old. Deleuze suggests that if common sense keeps bodies in check, then non-sense is a way of orienting bodies towards affect and unleashing unrealised potential. Instead of thinking of age as a problem, ‘Quartet' re-imagines ageing as a becoming, a never complete but always open movement towards. In other words, ‘Quartet' is a novel which thinks differently about being human by thinking differently about what it means to get older. Mary Dawson is a PhD candidate in the English department at the University of Leeds. Mary holds a BA in English Language and Literature from the University of Liverpool, an MSc in International Development from London, South Bank University and an MA in English Literature from the University of Leeds. Mary's PhD research focuses on mid-century British fiction, critical posthumanism, disability studies and affect theory. Mary's PhD is fully funded by the AHRC White Rose consortium, and her paper for this symposium is titled ‘Affect and Ageing in Pym's ‘Quartet'. Kavanaugh Hearings Begin; Kobach Sued Over Voter Purging; Democrats' Militarism

The Critical Hour

Hearings for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh started today in the US Senate. The hearings should take up most of the week. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell hopes to get Kavanaugh confirmed well before November's midterm elections. Where are we with the vote? US President Donald Trump told us he would nominate potential justices who would overturn Rowe v. Wade, and that's what he's doing. Trump went to the Federalist Society and the Heritage Foundation and got their lists of conservative justices likely to overturn Rowe and affirmative action because that's what his so-called evangelical base and ultra-right supporters want. That's how Kavanaugh's name got to Trump. Finally, if this is not a show hearing, why did Sen. Chuck Schumer reach an agreement last Tuesday with McConnell to fast-track the confirmations of 15 Trump-nominated judicial picks? Seven federal district court judges were confirmed that day. There's been a lot of discussion about Russian hacking and our election. I've been saying for a long time: it's not about the Kremlin, it's about Kobach; it's not about Russians, it's about the Republicans. Now, Greg Palast and Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. are challenging Kris Kobach and Interstate Crosscheck in court. For insight into this, we'll turn to Palast, who has been called the “most important investigative reporter of our time – up there with Woodward and Bernstein” by The Guardian. He and Rev. Jackson are on a mission to fight back and change election processes that are, as usual, victim to the contrivances of the far-right branch of the GOP and the co-partisans in Congress that vote with them. According to my last guest, Dr. Ajamu Baraka, the Women's March on the Pentagon, scheduled for October 20 and 21, “is an important part of ‘Anti-war Autumn'” activities. “We've got to put the so-called ‘New Wave' Democrats on notice that we're not going to allow them to get elected without clearly stating where they stand on US militarism.” As we look at this so-called progressive/Democratic Blue Wave that is supposed to be looming on the horizon, discussion of - and direct action on - war, peace and the military industrial complex is not at the forefront. What's going on?GUESTS:Leslie Proll — Civil rights lawyer. Advisor to NAACP on Judicial Nominations. Former NAACP LDF Policy Director & former Alabama Director of the US Department of Transportation.Greg Palast — Author and award-winning investigative reporter featured in The Guardian, Nation Magazine, Rolling Stone Magazine, BBC and other high profile media outlets.Dr. Ajamu Baraka — Internationally recognized activist, author and contributor the Black Agenda Report.
