Leah, Kate, and Melissa recap the oral argument in Trump v. Slaughter, a case that could nuke the administrative state as we know it by giving Trump broad leeway to fire heads of independent agencies. They also cover the other arguments in cases involving campaign finance and the death penalty, and various and sundry bits of legal news including the antics of Judge Emil Bove and Trump's ongoing game of U.S. attorney musical chairs.Favorite things:Leah: At will? "Here Comes Santa Claus" by Mrs. Miller. She was discovered by the announcer from "Laugh-In", which should tell you all you need to know.2. "Silent Night" by Wing. Wing Han Tsang was from Hong Kong and started singing as a hobby when she moved to New Zealand. Surprisingly, she made it kinda big. "South Park" even parodied her back in the day.3. "White Christmas" by Tiny Tim. There's also "Silent Night", featuring a spoken-word break where he takes aim at hypocrites, fornicators, and child molesters. You know, just regular Christmas caroler stuff. 4. "Little Drummer Boy" by William Hung. Isn't it crazy to think there's a whole generation who has no idea who this "American Idol" treasure is? 5. "I Got a Cold for Christmas" by the Three Stooges. Not terrible, but not exactly a classic.6. "Jingle Bells" by William Shatner, featuring Henry Rollins. Yes, THAT Henry Rollins.7. "Santa Claws Is Coming to Town" by Alice Cooper, featuring John 5, Billy Sheehan, and Vinny Appice. 8. "The Night Before Christmas" by David Hasselhoff. This one is extra cheesy, but did you expect anything less?9. "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" by Regis Philbin. This one has a cameo by a pre-Oval Office Donald Trump, who offers Rudolph a job in place of Santa.10. "Jingle Hell" by Christopher Lee. Yes, one of the greatest actors of all time. He dabbled in heavy metal later in life. This actually isn't his only holiday song, either. He also did covers of "The Little Drummer Boy" and "Silent Night".11. "Away in a Manger" by the Brady Bunch. This one only features the vocal talents of Marcia, a.k.a. Maureen McCormick. Hi everyone - Better late than never, here is our fan-requested episode where we (Julie and Amelia) say nice things about Blood of My Blood that aren't all about the actors, the costumes, or the Scotland porn. We also finally address all those Fiery Crosses in the finale.....pssst! It's the Jacobite Rebellion! Lots of love - Amelia and Julie Photo courtesy of Starz
We're getting into the final season of Outlander by checking out the prequel, Blood of My Blood. But does it stand up to the show we all know and love or is it just fan fiction to milk it's audience a bit more?
A close look at Tatiana Schlossberg's viral New Yorker essay, A Battle with My Blood. It is an emotional piece that blends grief, legacy, and quiet fury, and it signals a deeper shift inside the Kennedy family. The episode walks through the layers of the essay and the choices behind it. From the shock of Schlossberg's leukemia diagnosis, to the way she describes the strained healthcare system, to her understated but unmistakable criticism of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., this story becomes both a personal account and a moral document. This episode explores why the timing mattered, why the family dynamics matter, and why this essay reshapes the public conversation around RFK Jr. as Olivia Nuzzi's forthcoming book adds another external blow. The episode closes with a look at the media cycle, the political stakes, and the long arc of the Kennedy legacy. Want More Behind the Breakdown? Kate, Leah, and Melissa kick off the show by speaking with New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin about First Choice Women's Resource Centers v. Platkin, whose wonky exterior masks an under-the-radar abortion case. Then they preview the rest of December's oral arguments, which include cases about the future of the administrative state as we know it, campaign finance, and judicial review of asylum cases. Finally, some legal news, including the dismissal of the James Comey and Letitia James indictments. Shut the door to the bothy, babes: it's time to snuggle up with Julie and Amelia's coverage of the season finale of Blood of My Blood. They delighted in the casting department's latest triumphs (baby Claire! Hot Uncle Lamb! MAURA GRANT MACKENZIE!) as much as they despaired of the logic of time travel. And can we get a little commotion for getting this strong sexual content past TSA? xoxo Julie and Amelia Photo courtesy of STARZ
Hi, y'all - Amelia got together with friend of the show Keenan Caldwell to discuss Blood of My Blood episode 9, "Braemar." Lots of wig talk, happiness at having a more robust plot to gab about, and a big pig hunt. Shout out to Jhon Lumsden as Malcom, you seem like a good man. What else does a gal need, other than being allowed to marry who she wants?? Tell me that!! Lots of love - Amelia and Keenan Photo courtesy of Starz
Hi, y'all - Hey! When we begged for 'hot pess,' this was not what we meant! Amelia and Julie sat down to discuss the Starz series Blood of My Blood, episode 8, "A Virtuous Woman." This one can go kick rocks. Enough with the humiliation of women! We are all very aware how bad it sucked/sucks! It is nice to see the women banding together - Julia and Mrs. Fitz both rule. And though we were not a fan of this story line, Harriet Slater really knocked it out of the park as Ellen. Lots of love, Amelia and Julie Photo courtesy of Starz
Matthew B. Roberts, showrunner of Outlander and its prequel Blood of My Blood, joins Jess and Sarah for a fun chat about the creative journey behind the shows. Do podcastu wraca Alex Storożyński – dziennikarz i laureat Pulitzera, którego znacie z odcinka 151 o Tadeuszu Kościuszce. Tym razem rozmawiamy o jego książce „Spies in My Blood”, prezentowanej ostatnio podczas prelekcji w waszyngtońskim International Spy Museum.
Hi, y'all - Friend of the show Jen Moniz dropped in to chat with Julie about Starz Blood of My Blood, episode 7 "Luceo Non Uro." A lot of noise, not much action. Murtaugh is (rightly) pissed! Ellen is thinking so fast! Julia is...gardening! Let's get through this thing together, shall we? Lots of love - Julie and Jen Photo courtesy of Starz
Hi, y'all - Finally some real, hot...PESS! Julie and Amelia were excited to watch Starz's Blood of My Blood, season 1 episode 5, "Needfire." Time to go to the Beltane Baaaaalllll!!! So much to see! Incredible costuming. Fun mask work. Some really sexy ruining! This episode has it all, baby! Including some great drunk acting from our favorite lil' Pamplemousse (Murtaugh), Rory Alexander. Also in this episode: Beltane's Significance: The episode explores the importance of Beltane as a liminal, magical night that serves as a catalyst for character decisions and plot convergence, providing both cover and opportunity for pivotal events. PTSD Portrayal: Henry's trauma and its impact on his daily life are thoughtfully discussed, with praise for the show's realistic and ongoing depiction of PTSD rather than treating it as a one-off issue. Relationship Dynamics: The hosts compare the relationships of Julia/Henry and Brian/Ellen, noting that viewers are more invested in Julia and Henry due to their developed backstory, while Brian and Ellen's relationship is still building. Outlander Lore and Easter Eggs: The episode is rich with references to Outlander history, including connections to Claire's parents, Mrs. Fitz, and the use of familiar locations and objects (like the turnip door and St. Anthony medallion). Listener Engagement: The podcast features a robust listener feedback segment, highlighting community theories, clarifications about Outlander canon, and humorous observations (like fake beards and Midwest salads). Ellen's Agency and Strategy: Ellen Mackenzie is portrayed as a planner and schemer, using her intelligence and resourcefulness to navigate her circumstances and potentially orchestrate major plot twists. No, it's not sharing your live location by default, so take a rest from those social media chain letters. We're also pouring one out for AOL Dial-Up: believe it or not, 1% of US internet users were still relying on this! Plus: Trump's authoritarian move to federalize the police force in D.C., and the implications that move has for first amendment rights. We also tackle the latest CDC data showing the U.S. fertility rate has hit a historic low. What's behind the drop, and why are politicians and pronatalists freaking out? We unpack the cultural, economic, and personal reasons more people are choosing to go child-free, and the absurdity of thinking. that restricting access to healthcare and a bigger tax credit can fix it all. It's a TV-centric recommendations kinda week: ABC Summer Games (Andrew), 'Hurricane Katrina: Race Against Time' on Hulu/Disney+ (Laura), and 'Outlander: Blood of My Blood' on Starz (Pam). And in this week's installment of After Dark: Inspired by our findings in the main show that Instagram's new Maps feature is not sharing your location by default, we're asking ourselves... how much info is TOO much info to share? Location sharing may be a modern convenience, but it's also inspiring friend group drama and a ton of privacy fails. Should we be more deeply concerned about how much we're willing to share (and stalk) via location apps? And right on cue, a revelation is made on air that creates jealousy on the panel re: location sharing. Oops! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Few actors kick off their careers with productions as big as the opportunities Hermione Corfield secured early on. One of her first feature film credits is Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation in which she shares a key scene with Tom Cruise, and soon after came xXx: Return of Xander Cage, and Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi. After that, it was the indie crime thriller Rust Creek which earned Corfield a couple of film festivals honors, and then it was the movie that quite firmly solidified her as a must-follow actor for yours truly, the eco-horror movie Sea Fever in which she stars opposite Connie Nielsen and Dougray Scott. Ever since our TIFF 2019 chat for that film, Corfield's been a prime target for Collider Ladies Night and now, with the debut of the Outlander prequel series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, the time has finally come. The new Starz show puts the spotlight on Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and Claire Beauchamp's (Caitríona Balfe) parents. For Jamie, it's Jamie Roy's Brian Fraser and Harriet Slater's Ellen MacKenzie, and Claire's parents, Henry Beauchamp and Julia Moriston, are played by Jeremy Irvine and Corfield. Whereas Brian and Ellen's romance starts and remains in the same time period, Henry and Julia experience a significant upheaval when, similar to their daughter, they travel from 1917 to 1714, crossing paths with Brian and Ellen.Soon after a brief chat with Corfield and much of the main ensemble at San Diego Comic-Con, Corfield swung by the Collider Ladies Night studio for an extended conversation about the first two episodes of Season 1, and to offer up a few teases of what's to come. Hi! While Allison takes a well-deserved summer break, Amelia and Julie got together to watch and react to the Starz-official trailer for the Outlander prequel series, Blood of My Blood. As always, we couldn't figure out tech shit, so just trust us on the time stamps. We also conflated Mrs. Graham and Mrs. Fitzgibbons, we're very sorry book readers! Let's all hope that this show is great. We are very excited for Baby Pamplemousse! Lots of love - Amelia and Julie Photo Courtesy of Starz

On October 6, 1978, Patricia Roisinblit — a young Jewish medical student and leftist activist — was abducted by Argentina's military junta while eight months pregnant. She was never seen again. But her mother, Rosa, refused to let her story end there. In this deeply moving episode, we speak with journalist and author Haley Cohen Gilliland about her extraordinary new book, A Flower Traveled in My Blood — a powerful narrative of dictatorship, resistance, and the decades-long search for justice led by the Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo, Argentina's Grandmothers of the Disappeared.Gilliland, a former Economist correspondent in Buenos Aires, chronicles the brutal history of Argentina's military regime and the courageous women who defied it. We follow the personal and political story of the Roisinblit family — from Patricia's disappearance, to the state-sanctioned abduction of her son Guillermo, to Rosa's decades-long fight to find the truth and reunite her family. We discuss the role of antisemitism in Argentina's Dirty War, the use of genetic testing to identify stolen children, and the uncomfortable legacy of silence, complicity, and denial in Argentine society. With chilling parallels to today's global political climate, this conversation is a haunting and hopeful reflection on what happens when ordinary people refuse to forget.Published by Simon & Schuster (July 15, 2025), A Flower Traveled in My Blood is already hailed as one of the most important nonfiction books of the year.*****STOP PRESS*****I only ever talk about history on this podcast but I also have another life, yes, that of aspirant fantasy author and if that's your thing you can get a copy of my debut novel The Blood of Tharta, right here:Help the podcast to continue bringing you history each weekIf you enjoy the Explaining History podcast and its many years of content and would like to help the show continue, please consider supporting it in the following ways:If you want to go ad-free, you can take out a membership hereOrYou can support the podcast via Patreon hereOr you can just say some nice things about it here Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/explaininghistory.
