Through her “archaeology of the future” design approach, the Lebanese-born, Paris-based architect Lina Ghotmeh has firmly established herself as a humanist who brings a profound awareness of past, present, and presence to all that she does. In the two decades since winning her breakthrough commission—the Estonian National Museum in Tartu—her practice has taken off, with Ghotmeh swiftly becoming one today's fastest-rising architectural stars. Just a week after we recorded this episode of Time Sensitive, she was named the winner of a competition to design the British Museum's Western Range and, shortly after that, she was announced as the architect of the new Qatar Pavilion in the historic Giardini of Venice; she is also the designer of the Bahrain Pavilion at the just-opened 2025 Osaka Expo. Across her high-touch, high-craft projects, whether a brick-clad Hermès leather-goods workshop in Normandy, France, completed in 2023; the timber-framed 2023 Serpentine Pavilion in London; or the concrete-walled Stone Garden apartment tower (2020) in Beirut, Ghotmeh celebrates the hand.On the episode, Ghotmeh reflects on the long-view, across-time qualities of her work and outlines what she believes is architecture's role in shaping a better world ahead.Special thanks to our Season 11 presenting sponsor, L'École, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes:Lina Ghotmeh[5:01] “The Shape of Time: Remarks on the History of Things”[5:01] George Kubler[5:01] Trevor Paglen[8:41] “The Long View: Why We Need to Transform How the World Sees Time”[8:41] Tim Ingold[11:15] “Windows of Light”[11:15] “Lecture: Lina Ghotmeh”[12:06] Beatriz Colomina[12:06] “Are We Human?”[19:58] Gaston Bachelard[24:04] Olga de Amaral[24:04] Cartier Foundation[24:04] Juhani Pallasmaa[24:04] “The Eyes of the Skin”[26:39] Luis Barragán[31:09] Stone Garden (2020)[31:09] Hermès Workshops (2023)[36:36] Peter Zumthor[36:36] “Atmospheres”[41:53] Khalil Khouri[44:51] Jean Nouvel[44:51] Norman Foster[44:51] Estonian National Museum (2016)[46:41] Renzo Piano[46:41] Richard Rogers[46:41] Maya Lin[46:41] Dan Dorell[46:41] Tsuyoshi Tane[50:45] “The Poetic, Humanistic Architecture of Lina Ghotmeh”[51:40] Rimbaud Museum[54:48] “Light in Water” (2015)[54:48] The Okura Tokyo[59:22] Les Grands Verres, Palais de Tokyo (2017)[59:44] Zero-Carbon Hotel Concept (2019)[59:42] Serpentine Pavilion (2023)[1:04:11] Osaka Expo Bahrain Pavilion (2025)
Non-technical Talk by Prof. Jonathan Fortney (U. of California, Santa Cruz) Apr. 9, 2025Over 6000 planets have now been found around other stars, but we only have information about what their atmospheres are like for a few dozen. NASA's powerful James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), which features a 20-foot mirror in space, is currently being used to understand planetary atmospheres. Prof. Fortney explains how we can look for atmospheres around rocky planets the size of the Earth, and how his group and others are already measuring the abundances of molecules like water, methane, ammonia, and carbon dioxide in the atmospheres of larger planets, of sizes similar to Neptune and Jupiter. And he tells us what astronomers are looking forward to in the next year or two with JWST.
Up and down the country many football fans are complaining about the atmospheres at stadiums, with a familiar theme of 'it's not what it used to be'. Clayton and James have an open discussion at why there is growing concern with James presenting 10 different reasons for discussion as to why the perception is that atmospheres are not what they once were in English stadiums. I like making these favorites mixes because it reminds me of why I liked certain albums in the first place. The perfect example is Abandoned Spaces by OdNu & Ümlaut. It's so good and I'm glad I can share with folks via these mixes. This mix, Part 2, has a little different vibe than Part 1. More sequencer driven tracks, some percussion here and there, generally a bit more active than the first mix. At least the first half is more active, then we slow down & space out. I hope you enjoy this one as much I do. You can find the full list of favorite ambient albums of 2024, and links to each album, in the post with Part 1 - https://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2024/12/2024-favorite-ambient-albums-part-1.html Cheers! This weekend, the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris will reopen, five years after the devastating fire of 2019. As a frequent visitor over the years, this magnificent building has always captivated me. One of my passions is creating field recordings, and I've captured numerous audio moments in and around the Notre-Dame. I've been gathering stories about some of these recordings, including one from my very first session in the cathedral back in 2007. With the Notre-Dame reopening this weekend, it felt like the perfect moment to share this story. Since I wasn't confident about recording the narration myself with the quality I wanted, I used an artificial voice from ElevenLabs for the spoken text. All the field recordings you'll hear are my own, with just a news clip coming from France24. In the latest episode of Half-Court Press, Wilson Moore and Jon Walker break down Nebraska and Creighton men's basketball's exhibition games and what each learned after the final tune-up before the regular season officially begins next week. Jon starts with the biggest takeaway from Creighton vs. Purdue: Pop Isaacs showed his ability to score the ball. Ryan Kalkbrenner also showed his presence against a young group of Boilermaker big guys. Wilson talks about Rollie Worster and how he impressed as a true point guard, filling in a role that NU didn't consistently have last season. The guys discuss the importance of the first few games with Nebraska's roster mostly being newcomers and how crucial rhythm and chemistry are to a team's success early. Next the two give their best and worst possible outcomes for the season before wrapping up the episode with a conversation about the best parts of gameday atmospheres at CHI Health Center and Pinnacle Bank Arena.
Soft spoken ASMR reading of The Vampyre by John William Polidori, written in 1819 as part of a short story contest with Lord Byron, Mary Shelley, and Percy Shelley. A crackling fireplace and a spooky atmosphere has been added as background ambience. Listen with headphones for the best experience. The Vampyre weaves a dark and haunting narrative, introducing Lord Ruthven—a charming yet sinister vampire. The story follows Aubrey, a young Englishman who becomes entangled in Ruthven's malevolent orbit. As they travel through Europe, Aubrey uncovers Ruthven's true nature, leading to horror and tragedy. Polidori's tale is filled with gothic intrigue, the struggle between innocence and evil, and the chilling realization that Ruthven's insidious influence may be inescapable. Regaining spiritual form.Genesis1. Before you create anything, you must create infrastructure to sustain it. Atmospheres before activities. Whatever spiritual experience you want to encounter, you must create the discipline to activate the atmosphere.Galatians6:7 The realm of the spirit works with investment. You are not beyond the principles that protect your vulnerabilities. Sobriety will protect you from being vulnerable to the devices of the enemy. One of the marks of maturity is that you have mastered the fundamentals. You have the childlike attitude of always beginning your day with Him. Hebrews5:13-14There is a process for temptation, it grows gradually. So let your alarm go off immediately you begin to nurse the idea, not when you have committed the act. There are aspects of spiritual growth where we don't remain a child, and there are some places where we must remain a child. It is not childishness, it is childishness.1Corinthians14:20 GET UP: Regaining Spiritual Form

This mix was an accident. Well, the mix itself wasn't an accident but the vibe and theme was. I was listening to some new music and heard a new track - A Flock Of Birds Part 1 by Motionfield, and decided to start a new mix with it. Not having any idea where I was headed, I tossed the track on my timeline and went looking for more music. I grabbed one, then two, then three, four, five tracks and before I knew it the mix had a watery vibe. Some of the tracks have that great dubby, watery synth wash sound I love. We take a little detour in the middle with a more acoustic sound on the Humble Bee & Offthesky track. But we eventually comeback to the deep sounds when we get to the Variant track. All the tracks are from this year except for the cut by Evitceles from 2019.
