Interesting tidbits The series is weird about region exclusivity: ReBoot camp has yet to be confirmed for a release in japan Advance Wars (1) was delayed in japan (presumably as a result of the US war on terror, though not officially stated).(the US released coincidentally released just before on September 10, 2001)  It released 3 years later in 2004 as Game boy Wars advance 1 & 2, bundled with the second game. Famicom wars, Gameboy Wars 1-3 were of course Japan only Japan also only got Days of Ruin as an eshop exclusive, not physical.   Designer Kentaro Nishimura stated that the success of Advance Wars shifted NIntendo's attitude towards western tastes and without it Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade would never have been localized.   Reboot camp is not the first time Nintendo outsourced the series development to a third party: Game boy wars Turbo, 2, and 3 were developed by Hudson and Battalion Wars 1 and 2 by Kuju Entertainment. Real Time Strategy and Tactical games have a rich yet unique history and conjure up an incredibly diverse set of games. From Pikmin to StarCraft, to playing Army Men in a sandbox, these types of games are hard to put labels on but you know them when you see them. While these games mostly had their hey-day outside of consoles, the GameCube boasted a couple of long-running franchises such as Worms and Army-Men (no not the Toy Story Army Men although Mike was pretty convinced that they were). Friend of the show Jason Hodgson joins the boys to discuss his memories of growing up with Worms games and the desire to see Worms Armageddon ported to the Switch. Finally Neil gets to talk about one of his favourite hidden gems for the cube, Nintendo-published Batallion Wars, a spin-off of the Advanced Wars series that is an incredible amount of fun.

Early in his career, Gavin Rothery’s goal was to have two jobs: one that pays your bills and you that you enjoy. Then, simply transition the one you enjoy into the one that pays your bills. Starting in the Art Department, Rothery worked on games like Grand Theft Auto III, Battalion Wars, and movies like Moon, which starred Sam Rockwell. All of this, of course, led to Rothery writing and directing his first feature. In Archive, Theo James and Rhona Mitra unlock the year 2038. In the film, “George Almore is working on a true human-equivalent AI. His latest prototype is almost ready. This sensitive phase is also the riskiest. Especially as he has a goal that must be hidden at all costs: being reunited with his dead wife.” In this interview, Rothery discusses how he used his skills as a comic artist to move into the game industry and eventually filmmaking, how story relates to visual art, his fascination with Mythbusters, why you should hang on to ideas, and what he learned from Duncan Jones on the set of Moon. Continuing the December theme of speaking with devs who made some of my favourite games of 2016, I'm joined this week by Jonathan Burroughs, one of the creators of Virgina and co-founder of Variable State. The team have recently been nominated for Writer's Guild of Great Britain award for the writing in the game too, so huge congratulations to them for that. In addition to his almost accidental career path - which took him from QA on Burnout 3 to starting his own game company via Battlefield and writing House of the Dead - Overkill - we talk about his Spectrum in a briefcase, an early love of Cannon Fodder and Wing Commander, designing levels for Marathon, the story of Virgina, how Lumines can be a cure for anxiety and how Gamedev Story can mend a broken heart. Become a Patron! There were some surprising developments in video game news. We discuss Google Stadia, the new drama on the video game live streaming platforms, new games, and how another gamer fell victim to microtransactions and loot boxes. Let's dive into the news!   Narcos: Rise of the Cartels looks like an exciting addition to the turn-based tactical combat genre. If you love XCOM and want to experience Netflix's Narcos as a tactical game, then this game might be a perfect fit. It is being developed by Kuju who created Advanced Wars and Battalion Wars.    Former Twitch employee reveals that Twitch does not use any bots to ban or suspend streamers. An employee gives every ban and suspension that happens on the platform. This piece of news begs the question of why the Twitch rules are being enforced unequally. The most recent example is cosplayer quqco has been banned for dressing as Chun-Li. However, other streamers have dressed as Chun-Li and not been banned from the platform. Twitch has an issue with unequally applying punishment.    Mixer has rolled out ads for the video game live streaming platform. However, does it benefit the video game streamers? As of right now, it does not seem that the video game streamers will directly benefit from the ads. The streamers will not get paid directly for the ads put on their channel. Will this hurt Mixer's fight against Twitch?   Sony's State of Play will be airing on the twenty-fourth of September. As of right now, there will be no new news on the PS5. Sony will be informing us about The Last of Us Part 2 and Ghost of Tsushima. Richard and John speculate on what other announcements will happen at this State of Play.   Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening released, and it appears to be a hit! The scores ranged from eights to tens, and the reviewers agree that is has improved on the older game. It is a perfect game to be released along with the Nintendo Lite.    Link's Awakening Amazon: https://armstrongsmusings.com/linksawakening-amazon   Switch Lite Amazon: https://armstrongsmusings.com/switchlite-amazon Walmart: https://armstrongsmusings.com/switchlite-walmart    This week had another tragedy when it comes to a video game, putting a family into significant financial distress. The eighteen-year-old MMO game, Runescape, recently had a player who spent 62,000 dollars in microtransaction. The game is heavily monetized with microtransactions, a subscription, a Battle Pass, Treasure Hunter Chests (loot boxes), and other premium offerings. These type of stories will only grow as video game companies look at ways to monetize their games.   Our Showstopper is Google Stadia Founder's Edition has sold out in Europe and soon to be sold out in other countries. The Founder's Edition is being replaced with Premier Edition. The Founder's Edition comes with special usernames, a Chromecast device, three-months of Stadia Pro, the three-month friend pass, and the limited-edition Night Blue Controller. The Premier Edition comes with a Chromecast device, three-months of Stadia Pro, and Clearly White Stadia Controller. Does this mean that Stadia might have a fighting chance? Are you going to purchasing Stadia? Let us know what you think!    Thank you for listening!
