In this episode, David is joined by Andrew Rothery to discuss the opportunities and advantages of investing in private markets. Andrew highlights the broad range of assets that can find a home in the private market, including equities, debt securities, and alternative investments like oil and gas. He emphasizes that private ownership is more about the needs of the investor rather than the specific asset class. The conversation explores Andrew's positions as a non-executive director in various businesses, such as a deep tech incubator and a property development company focused on community-building. He also mentions his involvement with Blackbird Ventures and LeapFrog Investments, showcasing the growing venture capital and impact investing sectors. Andrew stresses the importance of track records when selecting managers in the private asset space. He encourages investors to look for managers with a successful history and a proven ability to generate returns. Additionally, he highlights the role of advisory boards in managing conflicts of interest in venture capital funds. If this is done well, Andrew believes private markets can offer investors the potential for high returns, diversification, and the opportunity to invest in impactful and innovative businesses.

That same year, Marillion took these very special versions on tour and even added a few more highlights like “Gaza” and “Zeperated Out” to the setlist, presenting them in a whole new light. “With Friends At St David's” is not only a visually and sonically remarkable live album, but also a dedication to crossing musical boundaries and making “friends” outside of one genre and musical universe. In this episode of Masters of Community, we speak with Max Rothery, VP of Community at Finimize, a platform that provides investment education for casual investors in small, digestible bites. Max has a truly wide range of work experiences, from working in a bank to working in the film industry. He even ran a record label. Learning anything new is more effective if, alongside self-learning, you learn from others. This is where having a community of learners plays a big role. The Finimize Community helps casual investors capitalize on tech tools to connect and learn from other people like them. This episode is packed full of insights about community from a person who had no experience in the field when they first started. Listen to the full episode for specific insights on how to use your community for research. Who is this episode for? For community managers who have started in the community field from other fields and casual investors. Three key takeaways: 1. When a community makes sense for service-oriented businesses: Learning content includes several questionable sources online. Creating high-quality content that people love to consume and then creating a paid community around it helps to profitably solve this problem. Talking to your community (free or paid) helps you understand the different types and subtypes of people your content will help and their favorite topics. 2. Researching Community Members: As a first step to your community strategy, start by talking to the most engaged fans and understand their intrinsic motivations in life. Expand this circle in steps until you get credible data on a solid ideal customer profile (ICP). After this, create, grow, and optimize your community to improve the experience of this ICP so that any new members will find something they have in common with existing members. Have a clear business goal (what your company gets out of the community) and a clear community goal (what members get out of being in the community). Be ready to leave out a particular segment that is not well-represented in your data set to focus on your most profitable ICP. 3. Making the best use of community spaces: Create a community space that allows connections and public discussions to flourish. Let your content team find new ideas from these discussions. Your sales team can also use these spaces for competitive research. Make sure you collect data to prove the efficacy of any insights you use from the community. Notable Quotes: 1. “The best thing to do when you lose money is to speak to someone else. That's [how you realize] that's kind of the point of investing. It's like, sometimes you do well, sometimes you don't. I think that that's a really natural way for a natural reason that a community should exist. ” 2. “We're just creating spaces and watching and observing, and then trying to feed that back and give context to the rest of the business” 3. “Our core audience is probably like twenty-seven to forty-year-olds that have got surplus income [and are] working in well-paid jobs and investing on the side… We're saving them time that they can't get anywhere else. If we try to focus on students or even beginner investors, it distracts us from delivering to that core audience.” Answers to rapid-fire questions: 1. If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would that be? Burgers. 2. What's your favorite book to give as a gift to others or to recommend to others? “Rules for Revolutionaries” by Becky Bond and Zack Exley. 3. A go-to community engagement, tactic, or conversation starter? Reserve time with people to talk more with them about a particular topic. 4. Have you ever worn socks with sandals? Yes, wearing them while recording this interview 5. What's the weirdest community you've ever been a part of? A natural wine community that was associated with a startup but members ended up creating a parallel, more helpful wine community of their own. 6. Tweet-size deathbed advice? Life is always the most rewarding in the deep end.

We enjoyed our conversation with Max Rothery from Finimize. It is so funny, because we talk a lot on Peers Over Beers on how others built their communities and how different each one is. Finimize started from an email newsletter which now has more than 1m subscribers. In 2019 they built out their community to be in person, with chapters in more than 35 countries w/ 10,000 people attending meet ups. In the midst of Covid-19 they had to shift virtually and this year they tripled the number of attending. Max goes into detail around that shift and talks about how they also launched a paid community with WhatsApp as their main tool for engaging their community digitally.
Short explanation about the rules on the structures of solid solution, that is famous as Hume-Rothery rules.
Our guest speaker of the hour is Susan Rothery. As a crisis counselor for teens and their parents for the past 30 years, I was honored to be asked by a group of teens to collaborate on creating a "voice" for teen support and interaction. These teens choose a plan of action for healing and create structured meetings to address challenges. Their success was so evident within teen academics and personal health, that a non-profit organization was created to support their message. I am currently the co-founder, author and CEO of MPOWRD, an empowerment program for all teens committed to supporting self and others. Links: WEBSITE: https://mpowrd.org/

Early in his career, Gavin Rothery’s goal was to have two jobs: one that pays your bills and you that you enjoy. Then, simply transition the one you enjoy into the one that pays your bills. Starting in the Art Department, Rothery worked on games like Grand Theft Auto III, Battalion Wars, and movies like Moon, which starred Sam Rockwell. All of this, of course, led to Rothery writing and directing his first feature. In Archive, Theo James and Rhona Mitra unlock the year 2038. In the film, “George Almore is working on a true human-equivalent AI. His latest prototype is almost ready. This sensitive phase is also the riskiest. Especially as he has a goal that must be hidden at all costs: being reunited with his dead wife.” In this interview, Rothery discusses how he used his skills as a comic artist to move into the game industry and eventually filmmaking, how story relates to visual art, his fascination with Mythbusters, why you should hang on to ideas, and what he learned from Duncan Jones on the set of Moon. During the 18th century English country houses served an important function in their society as stages for the display of the status and power of the landed aristocracy. As Jon Stobart and Mark Rothery demonstrate in Consumption and the Country House(Oxford University Press, 2016), though, they also played a revealing role as centers of consumption. Using three aristocratic families from the Midlands as case studies, Stobart and Rothery survey their patterns of spending over several generations, revealing the factors that shaped them. This spending, they argue, was not constant but instead saw fluctuations that coincided with life events, such as deaths and inheritances. Such dramatic changes were followed by the acquisition of goods that often were then used to create venues for these families to display their elite identity, with pursuit of the fashionable often tempered by issues of taste, rank and lineage. Stobart and Rothery’s analysis is not confined to large expenditures, however, as they also examine the more mundane spending necessary to keep these large households functioning and the gendered spheres that often defined the roles played by husband and wife in purchasing goods and services. Their analysis of these activities helps to refine our understanding of country houses, demonstrating how they were not the static exhibits we know today but fluid environments in which families left an ever-changing imprint. The Starling Tribune: An Unofficial Arrow TV Show Fan Podcast
Starling Tribune - Season 2 Edition – Broken Dolls The Official Arrow Podcast of the Gonna Geek Network In this edition of the Starling Tribune the reporters Wing, Jay and Stargate Pioneer discuss the third season of season two titled “Broken Dolls.” The reporters mention how aptly named the episode is because several major female characters are “broken” including one who we do not even know who she is yet! And the Dollmaker is so evil he shakes all three reporters to the core. Reporter SP doesn't know who The Black Canary is (still) and it's up to Jay and Wing to give him the knowledge that he is sorely lacking, ESPECIALLY since he hasn't even starting reading the episode credits yet. While Jay and Wing do have background comic knowledge of The Black Canary and the comic references to the newly introduced ship's name Amazo, none of the reporters have background knowledge of Sin but the reporters have some interesting theories to share. There's even a brief diversion into Aquaman. Reporter SP also is stuck on dead bodies apparently now in both the DC and Marvel Comic Universes thanks to Captain America: The Winter Soldier and the Arrow pilot. Roy continues to be extremely reckless and is in sore need of training….as is Detective Lance apparently Mr. Starsky and Hutch. The Detective might need to learn police tactics in the 21st century but apparently everyone must listen to his names since “Arrow” catches on like wildfire. Oliver might have a new vigilante name but it doesn't help him run his company any better and it apparently doesn't help him sleep at home anymore either since the Queen Mansion seems to be a set of the past. Reporter SP gives a big shoutout to Stargate SG-1 alum Teryl Rothery who comes into Starling City as Moira's attorney and Reporters Jay and Wing geek out about the big reveal that Ra's al Ghul will be involved in the Arrow TV universe. The trio of reporters break down their weekly Bat Checklist and Reporter Jay gives a huge shoutout to listener Adam. Stay tuned until after the credits for some fun clips with Reporters Jay, Wing and JS. If you missed us live catch us next time and chime in yourself!
