It's been a bit since I've sort of been excited for upcoming games. The game awards reveals weren't all that spectacular this year and there's so many of them that you hardly have time to drink them in and remember them. Compare that to what we got from Sony’s recent State Of Play from this past week and it's a night and day difference of what a good show should look like. A lot of video and very little talk in between. It likely could have been shortened just a hair but with things like this you sort of have to cater to all tastes a little bit. So the boring parts for me are the exciting parts for others. Still, all around, this was a good showing. Even more so because a lot of what was shown was not exclusive to the PlayStation platform. My two biggest stand outs were the John Wick game (jury is still out on how it'll play – what we got seemed mostly NOT actual gameplay. It's not a red flag but I'll wait and see) and Star Wars Galactic Racer. Let's focus a bit on that racer, shall we? It's made by a studio that has mostly employed folks from Criterion. The old Criterion from the Burnout days. And if what we saw was anything to go by (again, did we see gameplay? Are we sure? I'm still gonna wait but I'm hopeful) there is a heavy sense of Burnout DNA in that game. I don't mind that it's adorned in Star Wars clothing, I'll take it. For me, you could have wrapped it in a Sesame Street Kart racer but if the Burnout DNA was there, I would be to – day one. Nothing to dismiss from Wreckreation – another game with Burnout devs. I haven't played it yet and it didn't sell well but it exists and I'll eventually get around to playing it. I'll take any and all comers when it comes to my Burnout. Someone's bound to get it right and I'll probably still enjoy their attempts. Then there's that Shinobi Ops game with the Tenchu vibes. You know, seeing how that game plays, I wouldn't mind an isometric stealth title in a Splinter Cell package. Ubisoft, if you're listening (you aren't). It's been…4,563 days since a new Splinter Cell game (non-animated series or guest spot in another game franchise, remake, BBC radio drama, or VR exclusive) was released. Also, there's been 1,280 job losses in the gaming industry since January 1, 2026.

Beides sind martialische Titel, ersterer meint einen Attentäter, der zweite "himmlische Bestrafung", ein schöner Name für einen politischen Mord. "Tenchu" ist ein blutiger, zuweilen sehr grausamer, aber auch ein gesellschaftliche Umstände reflektierender Film, der zu Diskussionen sowohl zu Samurai-Ethos, aber auch Terrorismus, Idealismus und Machthunger einlädt, Diskussionen, die wir gerne mit dem immer wieder gern gesehenen und gehörten Filmpodcaster und Autoren Lucas Barwenczik führen wollen. Stealth games! We've been trying to figure out how to make games anti-action for a long time, and before we ever got to Sekiro, we had a little game called Tenchu Stealth Assassins. My, how the genre has evolved.

We're living by honour and killing by stealth… again. For only the second time ever (although it will be happening a lot more throughout this season), we are returning to a series. We're going back to 2000 to look at a third-person stealth-action game. We're talking Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins.On this episode of Stealth Boom Boom, we chat a little bit about Rich spending his 18th birthday making levels in the mission editor, Josh's fondness for Tekken 3 (oh that volleyball was classic, wasn't it?), and bent coppers. After effectively creating the Soulsborne genre and having a wild amount of success with it, one of the most celebrated developers of the 21st century decided to tinker the formula once more. And, again, to great success. We're going back to 2019, to a stealth action game that picked up so many game of the year awards that particular year. We're talking Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.On this episode of Stealth Boom Boom, we take a look at the early days of FromSoftware and how it took the studio close to two decades to achieve overnight success. We also discuss a YouTuber making the Loaded Axe and Loaded Umbrella in real life, as well as the link between this game and Tenchu. The FN Gamers review Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and discuss whether or not the relentless difficulty takes too much fun away from the game.  Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a 2019 action-adventure game developed by FromSoftware and published by Activision. The game follows a shinobi known as Wolf, who attempts to take revenge on a samurai clan that imprisoned him and kidnapped his lord. The gameplay is focused on stealth, exploration, and combat, with a particular emphasis on boss battles. It takes place in a fictionalized Japan during the Sengoku period and makes strong references to Buddhist mythology and philosophy.Sekiro was released for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One in March 2019, and for Stadia in October 2020 (RIP). Lead director Hidetaka Miyazaki wanted to create a new intellectual property that marked a departure from their Dark Souls series, looking at games such as Tenchu for inspiration. Sekiro was praised by critics, who complimented its gameplay and setting, and compared it to Dark Souls, although opinions on its difficulty were mixed. Stealth Boom Boom goes all the way back to 1998 for this one, as Tenchu: Stealth Assassins celebrates a big anniversary. 1998 is often seen as the year stealth games were thrust into the mainstream, because of Thief: The Dark Project, Metal Gear Solid, and the game being reviewed today. But, does Tenchu hold up? I guess you could stop reading this and listen to find out. But, if you're gonna continue looking at the description, I'm gonna carry on typing out words into this little box.On this episode, we chat about the embryonic stages of developer Acquire and how Tenchu: Stealth Assassins very nearly never made its way to the West. In deze queeste bespreken in de main topic Peter (Retrogamepapa) en Klaas allerlei voor hun geliefde gamereeksen waar we al enige tijd niks nieuws meer van hebben gezien. Naast inkoppertjes als Silent Hill noemen de ridders ook wat meer (inmiddels) onbekende IPs zoals bijvoorbeeld Tenchu. In de intocht wordt het vooral vreemd met Dr. Strange en Stranger Things. Het wordt vooral vreemd wanneer er vrij uitgebreid over voetbalgames wordt gesproken, waarin Klaas veel moet uitleggen aan Peter (Wat is het verschil tussen FIFA en PES? Wat is buitenspel?). Verder worden er twee hele toffe titels geprikt nog in het steekspel: De PS1 classic tunnel racer N2O en een Atari 2600 klassieker met een poepende draak.
