This week on The Free Cheese, grab a Beam Cola and head to class. What happens when you repurpose a city sandbox engine for one of the world's most popular video games and use it to build a school campus? Rockstar sought to find out in 2006 with Bully and we spend this week adding it to The List. We go deep on its story, side missions, class structure, and everything in between as we lose five points in Greaser Respect but make everyone else like us.

Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our series on Relic Entertainment's Homeworld. We talk about the difficulty of a couple of the missions, how our RTS expectations maybe work against us, and fighting the camera. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. It's our first episode of 2024, and we're starting it off with a Patron requested game, Body Harvest for the Nintendo 64 as picked by Joey H.! This game was developed by the company that would go on to make Grand Theft Auto III and change the landscape, and it has a lot of the things we'd see in that game-- but is there a reason this never had the success as their later offerings? We'll tell you what we thought! As it's the start of the year, we talk new Christmas presents and purchases, and of course, answer some of your questions to try and stay current, and immediately fall behind. A Video Game Time Capsule: The Complete History of Video Games, presented by MRIXRT @reallycool
The early 2000s, spanning from 2000 to 2003, were a whirlwind of change and innovation for the video game industry. In 2000, a culmination of creativity met technology, with Sony's PlayStation taking center stage and the indie scene gaining prominence. Video games started gaining a foothold as a recognized art form, while Sega gracefully exited the console market to make way for new players. 2001 saw a surge in console wars with the debut of the GameCube and Xbox, while storytelling in games reached cinematic proportions. By 2002, the allure of sequels reigned supreme, with franchises opting for familiarity, and the end of an era for Rare as Microsoft acquired it. The year 2003 then marked significant mergers, with giants like Square and Enix joining forces and Valve launching Steam. Video games officially became a mainstream industry, drawing in significant investments and changing the face of game development. As the lines between art, entertainment, and business blurred, the early 2000s set the stage for the future of gaming.Featured Games:The Sims, Diablo II, Deus Ex, Thief II: The Metal Age, Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, Phantasy Star Online, Shenmue, Halo: Combat Evolved, Grand Theft Auto III, Oni, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Final Fantasy X, ICO, Onimusha: Warlords, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Metroid Prime, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, Kingdom Hearts, Ratchet & Clank, Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Call of Duty, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Freedom Fighters, and Viewtiful Joe. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★ (00:00) - Episode 6 (00:06) - 2000 (21:54) - 2001 (46:35) - 2002 (59:37) - 2003 Thanks to our monthly supporters FS Tabreez Siddique Mynx Mopman43 Ritsu William Kage Studio Devil Dallay_g Razu John H The Golden Bolt MykonosFan ErbBetaPatched Vornak Killer Space Serra Mr. Lindsay Autocharth History With Kayleigh Benjamin Steele Nick Makris minimme

WELL, the modern remakes of Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, and San Andreas may not be getting the most favourable reviews, so we wanted to find out whether going back and playing the original Grand Theft Auto III on the Playstation 2 would be a better option. Our look back at Grand Theft Auto Vice City (in an episode from 2019) wasn't as favourable as we'd hoped, but will the FIRST 3D Grand Theft Auto game hold enough nostalgia to warrant a replay? Before stepping back into Liberty City Mikey updates us on his Deathloop progress, and our lovable hosts make a pledge to get rid of Overwatch. Plus, do you know why Grand Theft Auto 3 was originally delayed when it first came out?

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition Switch | PS4 | PS5 | Xbox One | Xbox Series X|S | PC Thursday Nov 11, 2021 The first truly “open world non linier” game is highly disputed due to the definition of open world being so broad. But the most common examples are: Jet Rocket, a 1970 Sega electro-mechanical arcade game that, while not a video game, predated the flight simulator genre to give the player free roaming capabilities DND, a 1975 text-based adventure game for the PLATO system that offered non-linear gameplay. Other early examples of open world gameplay (we obviously can't name all of them here. But here are some notable examples): - Hydlide (1984) and The Legend of Zelda (1986) were among the first open-world games, along with Ultima. Sierra On-Line's 1992 adventure game King's Quest VI has an open world; almost half of the quests are optional, many have multiple solutions, and players can solve most in any order. The DMA Design (Rockstar North) game Body Harvest (1998) Mario 64 VS Banjo Kazooie. Ocarina of Time 3rd Generation Open “City” games: (1997) Grand Theft Auto, (1999) GTA2 Sega's adventure Shenmue (1999) the originator of the "open city" subgenre,[70] touted as a "FREE" ("Full Reactive Eyes Entertainment") game giving players the freedom to explore an expansive sandbox city with its own day-night cycles, changing weather, and fully voiced non-player characters going about their daily routines. The game's large interactive environments, wealth of options, level of detail and the scope of its urban sandbox exploration has been compared to later sandbox games like Grand Theft Auto III and its sequels, Sega's own Yakuza series, Fallout 3, and Deadly Premonition. With the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition, Joey and Ron take a casual stroll down memory lane to talk about Grand Theft Auto III. Did you spend hours trying to fly the tank? We did! Good times, good times. We talk about how exciting and fresh the game felt at the time of release, but also how hard it is to revisit. Will the new remasters smooth those rough edges? Will we be able to touch water in III without drowning? We'll see! Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Grand Theft Auto maker Rockstar Games, has filed a lawsuit against the modders who reverse engineered Grand Theft Auto III and Vice City. As spotted by Rockstar Intel, the lawsuit claims the mod team deliberately "sought unlawfully to copy, adapt, and distribute to the public infringing source code for two classic GTA titles." It adds that both projects, better known as 're3' and 'reVC,' are evidence of copyright infringement as they enable players to install and run GTA III and Vice City on multiple platforms, including those on which they never saw an official release, and feature unofficial enhancements.
