Becky Straw is the Co-Founder of The Adventure Project, and a true believer in the ability to build community through entrepreneurship and move people out of poverty for good. There are so many amazing elements of The Adventure Project but in this episode, we look into their monthly giving program because it uses some innovative strategies to create strong memory peaks with the members of The Collective (both when donors are first inspired to join and throughout their time in The Collective). Throughout her career, Becky Straw has seen the affect stable employment can have on families and the communities they live in. A self-described “advocate for the unsexy,” Becky has repeatedly gotten involved with causes that created or supported entrepreneurship and job creation in communities that need them. Turning a surprise setback into an opportunity, Becky launched The Adventure Project in 2010 to give people the tools, education and resources to become social entrepreneurs in their own communities.Learn more about The Adventure Project.
This week we are joined by Becky Straw, co-founder and CEO of the Brooklyn based non-profit organization, The Adventure Project. She shares her experiences that lead her to lead such an altruistic life.
One billion. That's the number of people still living in extreme poverty. But give them 10 years, and The Adventure Project will make that number dwindle. In this episode, Becky Straw, co-founder and president of TAP, is telling us about the amazing organization she started and how they are fighting poverty in countries across the globe. To view the full show notes, continue reading here or visit my website: www.heartfelthippie.com A few years ago I was looking for some meaningful Christmas gifts I could give my family that we're ethically made and had some kind of a positive impact on the world through my purchase. In my search I came across the charcoal soap that TAP makes. I didn't know much about the organization, but from some brief research I knew I could vibe with it. A few years and several bars of soap later and here we are! I was ecstatic to connect with Becky and learn more about TAP, and I was not disappointed. Becky and I bonded over being moms to littles, our faith, watching The Bachelorette, and most of all our love for people and the planet. TAP takes a unique, four-pronged approach to addressing poverty. The focus is entirely on creating jobs in developing countries to empower locals and boost economies. These jobs include training healthcare workers, farmers, well mechanics, and sales people. While all of these are vital to helping the community thrive, my favorite is the training of women to sell charcoal-efficient stoves and run their own small businesses. I was shocked to learn about the horrible impacts that cooking over open fires has on so many women and children's health as well as the health of our earth. The charcoal-efficient stoves are cost-effective solutions to eliminate carbon emissions from the air and protect women's health. It's solutions like these that set TAP apart. Hearing about Becky's boldness to start this organization and the amazing ways that God has provided for her to keep going is unreal. You will be compelled by her stories to want to be a part of something bigger. Becky expresses that whatever it is - donating, buying charcoal soap, or simply joining their email list - that you have the power to make a difference right where you're at. Listen in and figure out how you can impact the lives of people who are just like us with a little less privilege. Nikolai DiPippa, Clinton School Director of Public Programs, sat down with Becky Straw, co-founder and CEO of the Adventure Project, a nonprofit creating jobs in developing countries. Instead of giving money and products away, The Adventure Project works somewhat like a venture capital firm for effective nonprofits: funding entrepreneurial activity that will both provide jobs and help in the four most needed areas – water, hunger, health, and environment. The 10-year goal of the organization is to create one million jobs worldwide. Prior to The Adventure Project, Becky spent three years helping to launch Charity: Water, an organization bringing drinking water to people in developing countries.
On Episode 103 of the Mama Bear Dares Podcast, Becky Straw, co-founder and CEO of The Adventure Project (TAP), shares the empowering work of her organization in the battle towards worldwide justice and equality. Becky, who has been a major player in international aid for over a decade, talks about what her nonprofit is doing to ensure clean water to those who go without and shows us how she has engaged her Mama Bear in battle. Tesi and Leslie listen as Becky shares the origin story of TAP, tells inspiring stories from the field, provides research and observations on global needs and reality, and reveals the importance of the people who tend to be most supportive to the work of TAP. Can you guess who that might be? MOMS and Millennials, of course! Listen in to this Mama Bear Dares episode to be inspired by Becky's heart for social justice and consider joining her this World Water Day! Read complete Show Notes on the Mama Bear Dares website.
The Adventure Project is a social enterprise designed to give people jobs, not handouts. Becky Straw’s journey started at Columbia Graduate school where they taught social enterprise administration and nonprofit management. She worked at Unicef which led her to a connection with Scott Harrison who is currently the founder of charity: water. At the time Scott was just getting started and Becky persistently pushed to get on board and help Scott out. This led to a stay on his couch in Soho, NYC, and tremendous experience in learning how to scale impact. Find out how they are scaling their nonprofit and impacting the lives of people around the world.
I want to start a movement around the conversation of GIVING, generosity, and our unique ability as entrepreneurs to earn more and give more than ever before. This past week I had a phone conversation with my friend, Becky Straw, from The Adventure Project about how we're going to be giving even MORE to her organization than ever before and how I wanted to get more of my community involved in her monthly giving program, The Collective. She's currently running a contest where YOU can win a trip to go with her and her team to Kenya to see how The Adventure Project is making an impact with entrepreneurs in local communities and I wanted her to share exactly what that looked like. I just so happened to be recording it as well and wanted to share it here with you. If it calls to you, I'd love for YOU to start your giving with The Adventure Project this month in their Collective and be entered to win a trip to Kenya. I also share with Becky why I think it's so important for me to share this message of Good Businesses Do Good in a bigger way, and I want to SHOW YOU that you CAN start giving right now. If you're interested in joining The Collective and being entered to win a trip to Kenya -- join us here! www.adriennedorison.com/kenya Becky Straw on her original interview on the show.
There’s a perception in our culture that if we face obstacles, the world is warning us that we are on the wrong path...or that if an idea terrifies us, it’s probably not worth doing. But on today’s podcast, Jody Landers proves that Mama Bears are born when we lean into fear and do what scares us. If anyone knows about doing big things in life despite being terrified, it’s Jody. With three healthy young boys already part of their brood, Jody and her husband Andy delivered Quincy. Born with a rare birth defect, Quincy spent weeks in the hospital and months in a body cast. It was in that hospital room that Jody’s Mama Bear was born. With the tenacity she found in that hospital room, Jody went on to adopt twins from Sierra Leone, organize a handful of moms to fill backpacks for foster care children, and raise over a half million dollars for clean water. A few years after that she and Becky Straw founded The Adventure Project from her home with her six children underfoot. Most recently Jody dove into a Kickstarter campaign to help launch her husband's musical career from a cult-like following to a national audience. Jody was terrified of doing all of these things—whether she entered willingly or was forced into them—but she did them anyway. A lesson to our Mama Bear community is to stop running from fear and dare to “do it scared.” A special thank you to Andrew Landers and Mainstreet Struggleville for our music for this episode. Becky Straw is the Co-Founder and Chief Adventurist for The Adventure Project, a new nonprofit “adding venture” capital to support entrepreneurs in developing countries. Her and her co-founder were inspired by a passion to revolutionize giving, and create a movement to marry good intentions with measurable impact. Becky was 29-years-old when they launched. In their first four years, The Adventure Project has engaged 6,000 Americans to help create 894 jobs in India, Kenya, Uganda and Haiti. Those entrepreneurs will go on to serve over one million people to better health care, food and water. Their goal is to create one million jobs in the next ten years. Prior to The Adventure Project, Becky spent three years helping to launch the nonprofit, charity: water and graduated from Columbia University with a Master's in International Social Welfare. Becky is also the recipient of this years Diane von Furstenberg People's Voice Award for female founders making a difference. In this episode Becky shares: - how to launch a nonprofit with $4,000 - why to jump in w/ faith when dealing with obstacles/rejection - how to ask for help - how to fundraise from grassroots supporters - how / why she decided to start a nonprofit focused on jobs - how to be sure you are creating impactful change in the world - why jobs are critical to ending extreme poverty World Food Day is today - Friday, October 16th - we're asking for supporters to specifically support farmers, with a $5,000 matching gift challenge! Did you know most farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa don't grow enough to feed their families? I know, it's crazy. But, when they are able to buy an irrigation pump, everything changes. One irrigation pump can lift a farmer and his family out of poverty and into the middle class in only one harvest. On average, each farmer grows enough to sell produce to 77 community members, and earns enough to send one child to school for the first time. We're joining forces with The Adventure Project to raise money to support farmers in developing countries. You can make a contribution here -- anything helps! www.adriennedorison.com/adventureproject
Your business is an extension of you, so while it IS separate, there will always be some ways that you're reflected in it. It will always reflect your strengths and weaknesses. It will always reflect your personality. And most importantly, your business will always reflect your personal core values. They are the foundation and framework that your business is built on. When you intentionally develop your core values, they increase your speed for decision making, help you avoid costly mistakes, reduce stress, and allow you to stay true to yourself and your customers. The business will always reflect what you care about. So what are your core values? Here are a few of mine as an example: ✔️ Authenticity: I always want my community to know I am being real with them. This means I don't only share the good stuff, I share it all. I want them to have the whole story and see even the ugly parts of my business and my life. ✔️ Relatability: I always want people to connect with my message and say “Oh wow, me too!” I want them to feel like we are in this together in our struggles and experiences. ✔️ Humor: I've got a naturally sarcastic and playful sense of humor in my everyday life. I want to use this to entertain and engage people and also lighten the mood so that they can hear the hard truth sometimes. I always tell my clients we need to lighten up and have some fun because believe it or not, we're not creating oxygen. ✔️ Approachability: Regardless of how big my network and community eventually becomes, I always want to be approachable, this is one reason I have my dog in my branding, that's part of who I am and I know it makes me look and feel more approachable. ✔️ Generosity: I am a giver to the core and my business is no exception. I want generosity to shine through everything I do, and I also want to influence others to be generous as well. With our time, money and energy. I have a few more that I won't go into major detail on, but they are things like: integrity, personal responsibility, challenge, encouragement, etc. By being clear on my core values, I can make decisions for my business and for the future that align with these (and other) values. Even as my life changes and my business evolves, knowing my core values for my business allows me to stay true to myself. So what are yours? What do you care about that you also want the business to be about? What is a passion or purpose in your life that you want to transfer to be a business passion or purpose? What do you value that the business also needs to value?
