Jill Johnson grew up in North Jersey and began camping with her parents before she could walk. After receiving her Master's in Special Education she moved to California and explored all it has to offer: deserts, sequoias, mountains, beaches, valleys, and SUNSETS.  Jill has since backpacked Central America and the Pacific Northwest along with various other national parks. If you don't find her in the forest she will likely be swimming in the ocean, stretched on a yoga mat, or snuggling with her own, or random strangers' dogs. She is always ready for the next adventure and her glass is always overflowing with plenty to share! You can find her all season as a Trip Leader on Under30Experiences US National Parks Camping and Hiking Trips. In this episode of The Millennial Travel Podcast I discuss with Jill Johnson:  Why does she love cows so much?!  How did she fall in love with the outdoors? What did her parents do with her growing up?  What does Jill pay attention to when she is spending time in nature? And what can people at home sense? What are some of Jill's favorite books related to the outdoors and nature?  How to leave the distractions of modern life behind when people are in nature?  How can people learn to appreciate nature more?  How did Jill get into yoga and meditation?  How can people bring the practice of yoga into their life, even if they don't have time to roll out their yoga mat? How unimportant we all are, but also how beautiful and grandiose we all are... When did Jill start traveling as a solo traveler? How Half Dome in Yosemite National Park changed Jill's life? Where did Jill do her yoga teacher training in Thailand?  The island was Koh Phangan of Koh Pha-Ngan and the retreat center was Samma Karuna What are Jill's travel plans for the summer?  Resources from Jill Johnson:  You Are Here by Thich Nhat Hanh  Wherever You Go There You Are by Jon Kabat-Zinn The Hidden Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben  Free Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course based on Jon Kabat-Zinn's work at MIT, Matt has taken Matt's episode with Joe K the Co-founder of Hurley and Billabong Follow Jill on Instagram @jilllovescows Listen to the full episode on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Soundcloud, Spotify, or Youtube. Sharing Your Knowledge, Applying What You've Learned

Encouragementology

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 22, 2020 41:47

On this show...we’ll be putting it all together. A compilation if you will. All the experience you’ve acquired, the challenges you’ve overcome, the tests you’ve failed, and the struggles you’ve emerged victorious. We’re pulling them all together. It’s time to share your knowledge as you apply what you’ve learned. That’s right, it wasn’t all for nothing. Each time you heard no and persevered to get the yes, you learned a valuable lesson. These lessons together shaped who you are today and that my friend, needs to be shared with others. We are all on our own journey traveling at our own pace. There are people all around us, including us that have something to teach and a valuable impact to make. I love a different perspective. Just a slight twist can cause you to look at a situation with fresh, unfiltered eyes. Failures are valuable lessons. Not something you seek out but something you can definitely learn from that could alter your course in a positive and profound way.  That’s something to be thankful for. That’s a new perspective. Typically, failures are something to be ashamed of, to hide from, and cover-up. Taking the emotional baggage and pushing it deep down, disassociating ourselves with the event and denying our role. Not only is there no lesson learned from that approach but it’s actually counter-productive delivering even more damage.  Harvey Mackay shares more on this introduction to that way we think in his article, Change your perspective, change your life, that he wrote for bizjournal.com Perspective has many definitions, such as the ability to understand what is important and what isn't, and the capacity to view things in their true relationship or relative importance. Consider this excellent example of how differently people view the same subject in this ancient fable. Four blind men were asked to examine an elephant and to describe its appearance. The first blind man felt the elephant’s leg and declared that the creature was like a tree. The second blind man felt the elephant’s enormous side and said that it was like a wall. The third man felt the tail and was positive that the elephant was like a rope. The fourth felt the tusk and likened it to a spear. Each man’s notion of reality was limited by the number and kind of attributes he had been able to perceive. Four different perspectives, four different conclusions. None of them had enough information to arrive at a reasonable answer. Acting on limited information is one of the biggest mistakes we can make. Once I had my first revelation, a shift in my thinking that elicited an AH-HA moment, I wanted more. I loved the freedom this new perspective brought and I wanted to challenge everything else I had ever thought. There was no way I could have done this level of discovery on my own. I had to seek out support and then listen to new ideas. Most importantly, be willing to accept a new way of thinking.   Now, no matter where you are on your journey, this show is all about SHARE, LEARN, AND GROW - so I found some lessons you might not have experienced yet so for you this is the gift of knowledge. And for some of you, these might be revelations since you’ve lived it BUT didn’t know you were in the midst of a learning experience so for you, this is the gift of enlightenment.  Miles Rote shares 30 Life Changing Lessons Adventure Has Taught Me in an article he wrote in Under30experiences.com When you are done with an experience, compost it, don't throw it out Obstacles aren't roadblocks, they're road signs Adventure is the greatest path to knowledge & happiness ...check out the show or the link to review all 30! Let me share some of mine with you: A great work ethic is noble but won’t solve all the world’s problems. You can’t just put your head down and keep digging the ditch, faster, putting in more hours, and going deeper. You have to be strategic and sometimes that comes with slowing down and reflecting on what you have and where you are.  Don’t be in such a rush to get somewhere. Grow up, get married, have kids, climb to the top of the ladder in your career. Time flies and if you get in a rush, you are propelled through the best parts. Slow down and enjoy.  Love is your most rewarding asset. Being loved and loving others is essential to health and happiness. Don’t isolate yourself thinking independence means you are rewarded for doing everything on your own. You need a consistent flow of love in your life. Serving others from a place of purpose and passion is the quickest way to unlock joy in your life. Nothing nourishes your soul more than being there for someone else in a true hour of need. Financially, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Give from your heart when you see someone in need - even when you don’t see it. Acknowledging someone is the only ice breaker you need.  MANON RINSMA-LEONARD, MSC. explains why we are Stronger by Sharing: “5 Reasons Why It’s Important to Share Your Story” in an article for strongerbysharing.com Bursts of laughter, tears of joy, sobs of sadness, love, grief, anger, it is all part of our story we call ‘Life’. It is a journey, a quest to pursue happiness. There are ups and downs, highs and lows, for some more extreme than others, but either way, there are so many stories out there. Find your Voice Empower Others Create Hope Create Hope Emotional Healing Judith E Glaser - Learn to Talk WITH People, Not at Them Love her research on the importance of sharing - not just about the weather or a quick catch-up. Sharing your challenges, struggles, goals & desires.    CHALLENGE: be in constant pursuit of knowledge. Look deeper at your struggles to find a new perspective and the lesson you will add to your experience bank. Use this learning to tell your story and impact others as you share what you’ve learned.    I Know YOU Can Do It!

Casey Fenton is the founder of Couchsurfing, a global travel community, especially great for solo travelers. Casey helped to spearhead the sharing economy & grow the platform to over 20 million users worldwide.  I consider the platform to be one of the best domestic and international travel hacks and for solo travel on a budget.   Casey is also co-founder of Upstock, a cloud-based platform to give employee equity in the company they work for. If you don’t know the meaning of “couch surfing” it’s basically where you stay on someone’s couch when traveling.  The platform Couchsurfing however doesn’t mean you have to sleep on someone’s couch… The point of Couchsurfing is  to “share authentic travel experiences” and your host will put you up in their home absolutely free.  In this episode of The Millennial Travel Podcast I discuss with Casey Fenton, Founder of Couchsurfing:  His story going to Iceland How a trip to Iceland was an impetuous for him starting Couchsurfing and us starting Under30Experiences.  The story of how Couchsurfing started How Casey flew to Iceland as a solo traveler and decided to find a couch to sleep on with locals Why Casey loves Iceland and has traveled their five times The quick story how Under30Experiences started. Why Casey Fenton is starting his new company in Iceland and is mentoring Iceland Startups How they picked the name “couchsurfing”. How Casey Fenton got the “travel bug” and considered himself an explorer.  How he got over a break up by traveling and buying plane tickets to random places.  Casey Fenton’s formula for intensity, diversity, and frequency of experience, and how he got out of his comfort zone.  His idea for “hacking destiny”.  What Casey Fenton learned about himself traveling?  He learned to be less shy, and improved himself.  Some examples of how Casey traveled to different places and how Couchsurfing was a great travel hack for saving money Casey Fenton’s idea of “ego hacking”. The book that opened up Casey’s eyes that we are all sleep. How a silly fight with his best friend opened his eyes to a lot of things about life. Casey’s idea of a “feedback ratio”.  Why it’s important to have ego and how we can use it as a tool.  How we can avoid suffering through non-attachment How to learn to trust yourself more and let others trust you.  Casey finishes talking about his startup Upstock and how you can incentivize employees with equity to anyone in your company with his tool.  Resources from Casey Fenton: Book: In Search of the Miraculous  Couchsurfing.com  Upstock.io CaseyFenton.com to sign up his newsletter You can find all the links and past show notes on millennialtravelpodcast.com Direct support for The Millennial Travel Podcast comes from The Millennial Travel Guidebook: Escape More, Spend Less, & Make Travel a Priority in Your Life... and from our new USA hiking and camping trips at Under30Experiences!

Scott Keyes is the founder and CEO of Scott’s Cheap Flights. In 2013, he found a flight deal he just can’t pass out on—a $130 round trip ticket from New York City to Milan. When he returned home, his friends and colleagues asked him to let them know the next time he finds a great deal. In a nutshell, that’s how Scott’s Cheap Flights came about. Scott’s Cheap Flights newsletter aims to enable people to travel and see and experience the world. Unlike automated flight deals and alerts sent out by way of affiliated links, they leverage their team of human flight experts and innovative software to provide meticulously-vetted and high quality deals that are worth their members’ time and money.  Some are even mistake fares!  To date, Scott’s Cheap Flights has more than 2 million members (and growing each day!). The total amount of airfare their deals have helped members save is already at a whopping $100 million! Scott’s Cheap Flights is run by a remote team with members situated in many parts of the world. Undoubtedly, they are making people's travel dreams attainable, one deal at a time! So far, Scott has visited a total of 46 countries. He lists Oaxaca, Mexico as his favorite destination. He runs Scott’s Cheap Flights with co-founder and COO, Brian Kidwell. Personally, I recommend the Scott’s service in The Millennial Travel Guidebook and gave Scott’s Cheap Flights great review.  Many people have asked if Scott’s Cheap Flights Premium is worth it, and I always say yes. Daniel Noll and Audrey Scott are the husband-and-wife storytelling team behind Uncornered Market Adventurers, world travelers, adventurers, storytellers, and tourism advisors from the US and based in Berlin.  They have been to over 90 countries and are two of my very favorite people in tourism. Their goal is to create a movement of respectful travelers and organizations who live at the intersection of adventure, deep travel experiences, and caring for our planet and its people. We hope not just to inspire, but to help others build a story-filled life, whether that life takes them around the block…or around the world. Today, we speak about Sustainable tourism & adventure travel that cares for our planet & its people. This topic is one that I’m super passionate about as Daniel and Audrey are owners of a tourism development consultancy & travel blog. They aim to humanize the places we visit, drawing our readers in through photographs and stories, so they connect with people and places they might otherwise never hear about or actively disregard. In turn, through their personal interactions, we seek to alter the view of America that people get from watching the news, taking in movies, or watching popular television shows. Call this our small contribution to public diplomacy and mutual understanding in today’s complicated world.Dan took his first trip abroad at the ripe old age of 26. He went to India by himself, discovered another planet located on Earth, and fell terribly ill (dengue fever). He eventually recovered and has struggled with various bouts of the travel bug ever since. Audrey has successfully managed projects in over twenty countries – often remotely – but prefers to be on the ground working directly with the people affected. Coming from a family tradition in international work that goes back three generations, her international focus in life is not a surprise to those who know her well. She looks for everyday universal experiences when she travels and aims to make personal connections with people and cultures in varied environments. She has a weakness for dark chocolate and can bake a mean apple crisp. If you want to know how this travel couple affords to travel the world, they break it down in three ways on their website:  Tourism Development and Marketing Advisory Speaking at Conferences and Universities Affiliate sales and website advertising In this episode of The Millennial Travel Podcast we discuss:   How Daniel Noll and Audrey Scott started traveling off the beaten path. Where first-time solo travelers should travel. Their opinion on Machu Picchu and how we can combat overtourism. Alternative treks to the Inca Trail How does travel really change people’s lives and how has traveled changed Daniel Noll and Audrey Scott’s life?  How has travel pushed Daniel Noll and Audrey Scott to become better people?  How can people make an impact while traveling or volunteering in a sustainable way. Lydia Dean left her job as an Executive Search Consultant in the year 2000 to pursue a lifelong interest in travel and humanitarian programs. She and her family moved to Provence, France where they lived for 6 years while exploring many developing countries. In 2007, they returned to the US and launched GoPhilanthropic Travel. In 2010 GoPhilanthropic Foundation was formed in order to more actively partner with small grassroots non-profits offering greater access to resources and opportunities. Lydia divides her time between Los Angeles, Provence, and the regions within which GoPhil works.  She is also the author of Jumping the Picket Fence: A Woman's Search for Meaning from the Suburbs to the Slums. Today I’m so excited to welcome Lydia Dean, Founder and Director of GoPhilanthropic Travel, offering travelers the certainty that their support is making a positive impact in local communities.  This interview was conducted pre-COVID19 in the research for The Millennial Travel Guidebook where I sprinkled in tons of information on sustainable travel and where Lydia was quoted. As you hopefully know, sustainable travel and spending our money the right way is super important to us at Under30Experiences.  In this interview we discuss topics such as:  The dangers of voluntourism How to select non-profit organizations to work with How to vote with your dollars Where to travel if you really want to make an impact I’m also thrilled to hear Lydia’s inspiring story and have her share how philanthropy and travel changed the person who she is.  It really sounds like she lives an incredibly full and fulfilling life.  You can learn more about Lydia and GoPhilanthropic at www.gophilanthropictravel.com and www.gophilanthropic.org. Millennial Travel Podcast 1: How to Travel the World on $50 a Day: Travel Cheaper, Longer, Smarter in the "New Normal".    Shownotes found on millennialtravelpodcast.com Get show updates on IG: @millennialtravelpodcast   Today we celebrate the launch of the Millennial Travel Podcast with Nomadic Matt Kepnes to discuss budget travel, how he contracted COVID-19, the future of the travel industry, and The Nomadic Network. Nomadic Matt has been a nomad for over ten years and is the author of two bestselling books, How to Travel the World on $50 a Day: Third Edition: Travel Cheaper, Longer, Smarter and Ten Years a Nomad: A Traveler's Journey Home, and is the owner of one of the most popular travel blogs on the internet NomadicMatt.com.  I was happy to get an update from Matt who had recently returned from a trip to Asia and fell ill with COVID-19. Now that he made a full recovery, we spoke at length about the future of the travel industry and what we can do as travelers to support the small communities who rely on tourism for their financial well-being.   We talk about how Matt quit his job and started to make a living as a travel blogger.  Matt recently launched The Nomadic Network, a global community of travel-enthusiasts who support and inspire one another to travel better, cheaper, and longer.   I also had the opportunity to discuss Matt’s charitable work at FLYTE, the Foundation for Learning & Youth Travel Education, a nonprofit organization that empowers youth living in underserved communities.   ### Direct support for the Millennial Travel Podcast comes from my new book--The Millennial Travel Guidebook: Escape More, Spend Less, & Make Travel a Priority in Your Life.     You can also download a free chapter "How to Find The Best Deals on Flights".   Episode sponsored by Under30Experiences group travel for young people ages 21-35.

NEW PARTNER ALERT! We’ve teamed up with Dugout Creative, the newest entry into the concept merchandise market. For the best new baseball jerseys, shirts, and hats on the market, go to DugoutCreative.com and use the code BBBPOD for 15% off your purchase. Matt Wilson of Under30CEO & Under30Experiences joins us this week to talk about life, travel, and making your own path! Matt is the author of The Millennial Travel Guidebook, available on Amazon now. If you want inspiration, folks…you’ve got it. BEERS: Beer on Earth is our selection this week, as both Will and Jake made a trip to review some craft beer on their makeshift patio in Providence. The consensus? You need to get it on your radar if you like IPA’s. BUSINESS: The S&P may close at an all-time high – it came very close last week after consumer data suggested that people have returned to spending at pre-COVID levels for the first time in 4-5 months. Economists do say that since unemployment benefits have run dry, it may be difficult to sustain. Will makes a valid point that we dive into a bit – is the market inflated with “fake money?” In the gaming world, Epic Game’s treasured child, Fortnite, has picked itself a war with Apple and Google, who Epic Games alleges is trying to “swoop in” on Fortnite’s profits. Now, Apple & Google find themselves on the hook with a massive lawsuit against them. Who will emerge successful?! For the stock of the week, we select a cruise line who claims they’ve generated “remarkable” demand for 2021. BALLS: The Yankees are cooking! They are 10-0 at home, and undefeated in the last 10 against the Red Sox. Is the treasured rivalry dead? In the hockey world, we already have some major surprises. Most notably, the New York Islanders are leading the series against the 2018 Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals, and are looking for the sweep on Tuesday night. Could the Islanders be a legit threat? We also discuss Bruins’ goalie Tuuka Rask opting out of the season, citing “family concerns.” Normally, we wouldn’t bat an eye here…but after playing 5 games, it’s hard not to wonder if there were other factors – such as his performance – at play. In the NFL world, preseason training camps have officially kicked off! But there are two major points that the league has not really addressed yet – the frequent travel of teams from one coast to another, and the fact that FANS might be in the stadiums. Is this realistic? --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/beersbusinessandballs/support

This is the episode I never, in my wildest nightmare, thought would happen.Kobe and Gianna Bryant's deaths have affected me in a way I couldn't possibly imagine. From the moment I heard about it I felt sick, sad, confused, and generally heartbroken. For someone I never met, it's amazing how impacted I am. I think this feeling is shared by many.I wanted to share my thoughts and reflect on Kobe's legacy. My friend and former 3-time guest of this show, Under30Experiences CEO Matt Wilson, happened to text me this morning suggesting we record our conversation as a podcast (as he also is saddened by the news). This bonus episode is a freeform conversation where Matt and I reflect on what Kobe meant to us, what entrepreneurs can learn from him, and the legacy of Black Mamba. This episode is also being released through Matt's Live Different Podcast which you can subscribe to on all major platforms.RIP 24/8.May your fighting spirit live within and inspire us every day. Before starting Under30Experiences, which you might know from episode #17 with Lindsey Dukes, Matt was the co-founder of Under30CEO.com. Under30CEO is a site that helps young entrepreneurs get the tools, resources, information, guidance and more to successfully run their own companies. In 2016, after about 8 years and 30 million page views, Matt and his co-founder Jared O'Toole sold Under30CEO to Rich20Something. Part of the reason for the sale was so Matt and Jared could work full-time on U30X. U30X provides authentic cultural trips and experiences for small groups of people generally between the ages of 21-35. The company is growing fast and was named #801 on the 2018 Inc. 5000 list of fastest growing private companies in America. Matt is also the host of the Live Different Podcast, which focuses on inspiring conversations about cutting edge mental and physical techniques to help people live beyond the status quo. The podcast aims to help people grow their business, get in better shape, perform at their peak, and have fun in life. To date, the podcast has 139 episodes, over 50 5-star ratings on iTunes, and incredible guests like Gary Arndt, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, AJ Vaynerchuk, Arthur & Pauline Frommer, and Tucker Max. Beyond his podcast, Matt's work is published on Forbes, Inc. Magazine, Huffington Post, Reuters, Under30CEO and other notable sites. Matt travels and lives throughout the world as a digital nomad, hosts his own yoga and fitness retreats, and is a shareholder of the Green Bay Packers.

You can find the full episode description and show notes at https://edgeofcomfort.com/eocp17/   What's up fellow millennials?! Guess what? We are changing the reasons and ways people travel. Consequently, we are also impacting how companies tailor to our styles and help us explore the world. On today's episode we are joined by Lindsey Dukes (@dukeslindsey), whose life-changing travels started with one of these companies, Under30Experiences (U30X). Not only did Lindsey take multiple trips with Under30Experiences, but was later hired as a full-time marketing employee. In addition, she now helps with building community and leading experiences in places like Bali, Ireland, Italy, Spain, France, and Thailand. However, Lindsey's life was not always so adventurous and global. For a while she worked in a corporate job, lived a “checkbox” life, and kept her true passions as hobbies. From the outside, there was no reason to think she wasn't happy or fulfilled. In reality, she couldn't shake the feeling that this lifestyle wasn't her truth. She believed the world had much more to offer and explore. Facing these feelings and telling her true desires to the universe, the world presented her with an opportunity to leave her job. Lindsey took her chance, booked trips to Bali and Iceland with Under30Experiences, and transformed her life. Our conversation hits on a wide-range of subjects, from her experiences with U30X to deeper life topics. I truly think there's something for everyone in here. Thank you for listening and enjoy!   Read the full episode description and show notes at https://edgeofcomfort.com/eocp17/
