Welcome to tech in 2025, where everything's made up and the numbers don't matter. Nilay, David, and The Verge's Jake Kastrenakes start the show by running down the latest tariff news, the uncertain future facing tech companies of all sizes, and what we're learning so far about how they're responding. After that, the hosts talk about a big week in AI news, including Meta's sketchy benchmark numbers and the latest damning reporting about the future of Siri. Finally, in the lightning round, it's time for America's favorite podcast within a podcast, Brendan Carr is a Dummy, along with some news about the TikTok ban and the Pixel 9A. And then some more tariff numbers, because they just never stop. Switch 2: the good news and bad news

Last week, The Verge's Ash Parrish got to play with the new Nintendo Switch 2. We got over our outrageous jealousy long enough to ask her all about it: what it's like to hold, how the screen looks, whether the mouse-control is any good, and much more. Ash gives us the good news, and the bad news, on everything we now know about the Switch 2. (We do talk about the price, but we recorded before the Trump administration launched its massive new tariff push — so you can consider the price even worse news than we thought.) After that, The Verge's Tom Warren joins the show to talk about Microsoft's 50th anniversary celebration, how the company has stayed so resilient for so long, and whether AI is really the next five-decade project for one of the world's biggest companies. Finally, we answer a question on the Vergecast Hotline (866-VERGE11, or email vergecast@theverge.com!) about how you should change your shopping habits in a tariff-filled world. It's hard to know where we'll be in a few months, but it sure doesn't look like gadgets are getting any cheaper. It's a Nintendo Switch 2. What could it cost, a thousand dollars? In this episode, Nilay, David, and The Verge's Richard Lawler talk through why we don't really know. But first, we talk about the Switch 2, and some of the reasons we're excited — and maybe just a little concerned — about Nintendo's new console. This is likely to be the most interesting device of the year, and we learned an awful lot more about it this week. We also talk about Microsoft's 50th anniversary, the fate of TikTok, and other gadget news. Right wing media has had a stranglehold on terrestrial radio and cable news for decades. What led the right to dominate the airwaves and brainwash a generation? About Jen Senko Jen Senko, a documentary filmmaker, author, and media-activist based in New York City, is known for her award-winning documentaries; Road Map Warrior Women (2000), The Vanishing City (2010), and The Brainwashing of My Dad (2016) narrated by Matthew Modine. In 2021, The Brainwashing of My Dad received the prestigious People's Voice Award in Public Service & Activism from The Webby Awards. Senko's adaptation of her film into a book of the same name (published on October 5, 2021) tracks the pernicious and addictive rise of right-wing media and how this media served as a tool for libertarian billionaires to get people to vote against their own interests and gain one-party rule. Jen's work focuses on socio political themes with the intent of inspiring activism and fomenting change.   You can find her movie here: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/thebrainwashingofmydad...   About TIR Thank you, guys, again for taking the time to check this out. October is National Eczema Awareness month and today Dr. Dan Peters welcomes expert Christine Triano, MSW, LCSW, the Director of Mental Health at the Center for Connection in Pasadena, CA.  Today’s interview about often misunderstood chronic diseases and conditions offers helpful advice for all parents raising teenagers. Christine Triano is a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) and psychotherapist specializing in the treatment of adolescents, adults, families and creative professionals. Her strengths-based approach ensures that counselling addresses not just what's going wrong, but identifies and nurtures what is going right. She strives to help clients make new discoveries about themselves and identify ways to overcome the obstacles they face—which is why she joined the Understand AD (atopic dermatitis) Squad. Her work at the AD Squad includes encouraging patients with chronic diseases to open up about their personal experience and she helps teens realize their condition does not define them. Dr. Dan and Christine discuss these questions:      What are the psychological and social impacts of living with eczema (and similar conditions) as a teen?   Advice for  parents who are navigating raising a child with eczema.   Atopic dermatitis is a severe form of eczema. What is the Understand AD Squad?    How parents can control their own stress (so that they don’t amplify their child’s stress)?   Teaching resilience, self-care, and other life skills for teens.  The show ends with Christine’s Parent Footprint Moment. Christine Triano holds a Masters in Social Work from California State University, Los Angeles and a Bachelor of Arts cum laude in Political Science from Tufts University in Medford, MA. Highlights of her professional experience include working with Eastlake Youth Services, Verdugo Hills Hospital, Homeless Healthcare Los Angeles, Jewish Family Services, and Gateways Hospital & Mental Health Center, where she spent five years as an adolescent psychiatric social worker.  Most recently, Christine ran the Mental Health Counseling program at AMDA College & Conservatory of the Performing Arts in Hollywood. In our first episode, Danialle Karmanos sits down with personal stylist Clare Pollard to discuss style trends for Spring and Summer 2019. Then, we hear the inspiring story of Veronika Scott, who created coats for the homeless that turn into sleeping bags. "The Coat Lady," as she was called, soon got the attention of some very big names and became a global force to be reckoned with.  Now, her nonprofit, The Empowerment Plan, not only helps the homeless, it employs them too. [gallery link="file" columns="2" size="full" ids="75,74,76,77"] About Clare Pollard While accompanying her mother to beautiful stores in her hometown and around the world, Clare learned how the clothes we wear have an impact on our sense of self.  In college, Clare spent a semester abroad in Florence, Italy studying fashion design with a Swedish designer. Creating her own collection from start to finish helped her appreciate the artistic process that goes into bringing fashion to life. After graduating from the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado Boulder, she started her career in marketing, and was fortunate to live in cities like San Francisco, New York, and Miami – places brimming with styling inspiration. Today – as a mom of two energetic children – Clare starts a new chapter with Pollard Style to continue to follow her love for fashion, styling, and helping people feel great. pollardstyle.com Instagram: @pollardstyle About Veronika Scott and The Empowerment Plan Founder of 'The Empowerment Plan', a Detroit-based social enterprise, Veronika Scott has built an organization that began around a single idea: to design a coat that transforms into a sleeping bag for individuals that are homeless. That idea has now transformed into a system of empowerment that creates jobs to permanently lift people out of poverty. The production staff, which is composed of previously homeless women and men, has proven that Empowerment Plan is radically changing workforce development. Each employee is paid to learn how to produce the coat, employed full time, and is also provided with supportive services. This opportunity gives employees a chance to earn a stable income, find secure housing, and gain back independence for themselves and their families. Veronika is the youngest recipient of the JFK New Frontier Award and received an honorary doctorate from Johnson State College. She is a winner of the IDEA Gold Award, the Diane von Furstenberg People’s Voice Award, and has been named one of Forbes 30 Under 30, Chronicle of Philanthropy's 40 Under 40, and CNN’s 10 Visionary Women. Her organization's story has been told at the World Summit on Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the Forbes 400 Philanthropy Summit, and on other platforms across the globe. Becky Straw is the Co-Founder and Chief Adventurist for The Adventure Project, a new nonprofit “adding venture” capital to support entrepreneurs in developing countries. Her and her co-founder were inspired by a passion to revolutionize giving, and create a movement to marry good intentions with measurable impact. Becky was 29-years-old when they launched. In their first four years, The Adventure Project has engaged 6,000 Americans to help create 894 jobs in India, Kenya, Uganda and Haiti. Those entrepreneurs will go on to serve over one million people to better health care, food and water. Their goal is to create one million jobs in the next ten years.  Prior to The Adventure Project, Becky spent three years helping to launch the nonprofit, charity: water and graduated from Columbia University with a Master's in International Social Welfare. Becky is also the recipient of this years Diane von Furstenberg People's Voice Award for female founders making a difference.    In this episode Becky shares: - how to launch a nonprofit with $4,000  - why to jump in w/ faith when dealing with obstacles/rejection  - how to ask for help  - how to fundraise from grassroots supporters - how / why she decided to start a nonprofit focused on jobs  - how to be sure you are creating impactful change in the world - why jobs are critical to ending extreme poverty World Food Day is today - Friday, October 16th - we're asking for supporters to specifically support farmers, with a $5,000 matching gift challenge!  Did you know most farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa don't grow enough to feed their families? I know, it's crazy. But, when they are able to buy an irrigation pump, everything changes.  One irrigation pump can lift a farmer and his family out of poverty and into the middle class in only one harvest. On average, each farmer grows enough to sell produce to 77 community members, and earns enough to send one child to school for the first time.   We're joining forces with The Adventure Project to raise money to support farmers in developing countries. You can make a contribution here -- anything helps! www.adriennedorison.com/adventureproject
