99: Enlighten Me on Human Trafficking - Part 2

Our kids are getting exposure - wouldn't we rather it be from us instead of other kids at school? This is true of so many things, and trafficking is one of them. Actually, our youth are the biggest targets and victims of trafficking globally. Equipping them with the knowledge of what trafficking looks like is one of the most powerful things we can do to help fight it! That's what Rasha and Youth Underground are here to do. Last week, Rasha, the founder and CEO of the Youth Underground organization, came on the show to educate us about all things trafficking. We discussed the different forms that trafficking takes and who the victims and the perpetrators are. Something that I learned is that trafficking does not discriminate against age, gender, race, or geographical location - this is taking place all around the globe to all kinds of people! Now, Rasha is back to give us the information we need to fight this heinous crime. And guess what? The solution starts with us! The more we know, the more we can do to prevent human trafficking, and the more we can share with those around us on how to do the same. Rasha has some great advice on educating ourselves and the youth in our lives so that we can actually make a difference. “Sunlight is the best disinfectant.” That's why I'll keep talking about modern day slavery until I'm blue in the face, as long as anyone will listen! If you've been a long time listener, you've probably heard me cover sex slavery before. But did you know that that's just one of many forms of human trafficking? It's the year 2021 and yet, the trafficking and sale of human beings is at an all-time high. It's for this reason that it's vital for us to continue the conversation! As our guest today will share, education is the best way to empower ourselves and those around us - especially the youth, who are the most common victims of trafficking. Rasha Hammad figured this out early on, and that's what inspired her to start the organization called Youth Underground. Through this nonprofit, Rasha and her team are equipping tweens, teens and young adults with the information they need to prevent human trafficking in their communities and their own lives. Today in Part 1, Rasha is telling us what human trafficking looks like in all its ugly forms and who the victims and perpetrators of trafficking are. Next week in Part 2, we'll talk more specifically about what Youth Underground does and how we can help to be part of the solution. Let's keep this conversation going and keep letting in the sunlight! 97: Enlighten Me on Essential Oils - Part 2

Essential oils can replace a lot of things in your home, whether it's cleaning products, cosmetic products, or even some medicinal products! But there's a problem - not all oils are created equally. Essential oils are a somewhat unregulated industry, so it's important to know what to look for in the oils that you're buying. That's what Christa - the mom, wife, and essential oil expert - is back to tell us about today! Last week Christa Pettit came on the show to tell us all about these little bottles of magic that have taken over her life. The best part is, they're not magic! These babies are completely plant-powered, making them safe and effective for so many things in life. In that episode, Christa shared about the benefits of essential oils and all the different ways to use them. Today, she's back to tell us even more! I really wanted Christa to help those of us who are beginners in Part 2. If you've ever gone oil shopping, you know that it can get overwhelming quickly because of how many different oils there are to choose from! Where does one begin?! Christa's answering that (and more) today and also sharing how to pick brands that we can trust and how to handle the different price points. My favorite tip from today is to start slow - you don't have to own all the oils right now! Instead, figure out one place you can start and don't hesitate to dive in. Coming at you today with all sorts of OILY goodness! You've probably heard of essential oils before as their popularity continues to grow. But, these are much more than a wellness trend. Did you know essential oils have actually been around for centuries?? These plant-powered oils have a lot of uses and benefits, and I wanted to get someone on the show who could teach us more about them! Christa Pettit is a mom to two littles and is passionate about reducing toxins for her family. Essential oils have allowed her to do just that! This momma went from using Clorox wipes on the reg to switching out nearly ALL of her household products for oil-based ones. In Part 1 today, Christa is telling us about how she started using oils and all the different methods for their use. I really wanted to know if it's possible that something as gentle and natural as OILS could really pack the cleaning power us mom's need - turns out, they can! This is a big conversation and I had so many questions for her, but wait - this is just the first half! Next week Christa will be back for Part 2 to tell us all about where we can start - how do we know what oils to buy? How do we know what brands we can trust? What do we do with the oils that are sitting on our shelf? This is the guide to essential oils 101 that you've been waiting for, so make sure you come back for Part 2 next week! Continuing education - have you heard of it? This term typically refers to careers like nursing or teaching to make sure professionals can stay up-to-date with the latest methods involved in their line of work. But, in my opinion, it's something we ALL need, no matter the type of work we do! It's been proven time and time again that continuing to learn, especially from people who are unlike us, is good for us! Kate Neally is back this week to tell us more about the research she's been doing to support that theory. Last week, my sis-in-law, Kate, FINALLY made her debut on the podcast. I say finally because we'd talked about getting her on the show for years once she'd done some of her doctoral research and could share with us about it. Well, her defense date is approaching later this month so it's only fitting that we lined this up in honor of that milestone! We always have fun together, but this time was especially great to sit down and talk about some of our shared passions and what she's been researching about them. In today's episode, Kate is telling us about the rest of her findings and also what implications they hold for both educators and the general public. I think what she shares today is of particular importance for parents or those who work with youth, but we can all glean something from what she tells us about diversity, representation, and equality. She also has some really simple steps we can take (like watching an award-winning movie!) to work towards some of these things. Sign me up for an easy task like that any day! Let me start by telling you that this show is many years in the making! Ever since I first met Kate, she and I have shared a passion for social justice, celebrating diversity, and all things education. Today, those three things are colliding as we talk about what Kate has been researching the past few years as she works on her doctorate, specifically looking at diversity in the STEM education fields. No, we're not talking about stem cell research here… STEM actually refers to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Even if those disciplines don't appeal to you, Kate is teaching us today why representation matters in all of these fields. As a high school math teacher, Kate has been an educator for many years now. After an array of experiences at different kinds of schools, she has become passionate about figuring out why STEM teaching tends to be such a field dominated by white males. She actually chose this as her main research topic for her dissertation and is here today to smash some stereotypes and share with us what her research has shown her. In Part 1, you'll hear us cover things like microagressions, representation, and stereotypes. As you can probably guess, these things have implications that go far beyond STEM - and that's why research like this is so important! In Part 2 next week, we're talking more about Kate's research findings and how we, no matter what kind of field we work in, can learn from it. I'm so thankful for people like Kate who are doing the behind-the-desk research to solve issues of racial inequality, and I'm also pretty thankful that I get to call Kate a sister and have her on my show before she goes big as a published researcher! Before you go any further, ima need you to do me a favor and let your guard down. Some of the contents of today's show might lead you to feel the need to get defensive. Friend, you have nothing to prove here. The fact of the matter is that we're all imperfect - we all have stereotypes, we all have biases, and we all make mistakes. In other words, we're all human! So if you can remember that no one's here to judge you or condemn you, you're going to enjoy today's episode a lot more! Back to enlighten us all is Jackie Ferguson, one of the co-founders of The Diversity Movement. Through her company, Jackie consults with business leaders to show them how true dedication to diversity, equity and inclusion (as opposed to a once-yearly online training required by HR) is good for business and good for us all! Jackie, who I consider an expert on all things DEI, came on the show last week to teach us what these terms really mean and how we can implement them in our own lives, no matter where we're at in the working world. In today's episode we're continuing that conversation and she's also teaching us some other important concepts to be aware of, like privilege and allyship. I love Jackie's message that we can use the privileges we've been granted to help those around us - what a positive and inspiring perspective as opposed to proclaiming that we don't have any privileges! You know that feeling when you say a word so often that it starts to sound weird and you question what it even means? I think it's fair to say that “diversity” has become one of those words for many businesses out there who are trying to stay relevant. This term is used so often that it's easy to lose sight of what it even means! But, here's an answer to that problem: The Diversity Movement. This consulting firm is working with businesses to achieve genuine diversity, equity and inclusion throughout their organizations so that they can become a safe space for all. Jackie Ferguson from The Diversity Movement is here today to remind us, or perhaps teach us for the first time, what diversity, equity and inclusion are and how they are distinctly different from one another. She's also teaching us about other common terms we may hear, like unconscious bias, and how we can incorporate them into our lives whether we're a CEO or a stay-at-home parent. I love Jackie's message that this is about all of us. Diversity isn't just about people of color or gender minorities - we actually all have diverse things about our personalities. And when we acknowledge and embrace those things, we all can thrive! So let's not be like Blockbuster - let's learn, let's adapt, and let's be open to change so that we don't get left behind! Scholars, collegiate athletes, secondhand fashion experts, AND business owners…how do they do it all?! That's the question you'll be asking yourself after listening to Brigit Blote and Payton Ryz today. These USD Coyote's didn't expect to be running a brand new small business before even graduating with their undergraduate degrees, but thanks to a campus competition focusing on sustainability, their wildest entrepreneurial dreams are coming true! Brigit and Payton, two of the three co-founders for Fomeno, are here today to tell us their story and why a business like this one is necessary in our world of fast fashion and online shopping. If you've been listening to the show for a while now, you know that secondhand fashion is a passion of mine. That's why my Uncle (a fellow Coyote) sent me an article on Fomeno when he heard about it through his alumni network. I was so excited to see that this all-star team of young women are coming up with a platform that makes thrifting simpler for us all and reached out to them right away! I often hear from people that they're not “good” at thrifting like I am, or that they just don't have the time to sift through secondhand clothes at the thrift shop. Well, Fomeno is the answer to a lot of these problems! Today Payton and Brigit are sharing about why they became interested in sustainability, how secondhand shopping can have a huge impact on our planet, and how a global prize has set them up to turn this idea into a real life business. Vulnerable. Brave. Inspiring. Those are just a few words of many I could use to describe Raquel McCloud. Beginning with the day she was born, this woman was not dealt an easy hand of cards. But, just like the story line from so many of her favorite books and movies, she was able to rise above her circumstances and create a beautiful life out of the hard and the messy. And not only that, but she is using the things she has been through and many of the things she is still dealing with to help inspire and teach and encourage others. I'm so thankful that she is willing to share the things she is struggling with and working on so that we can all benefit from it! Last week, Raquel came on the show and shared Part 1 of her Lifetime Original story. That story included some childhood trauma and abuse, experiences with adoption and emancipation, and a romance that began in none other than Taco Bell. Today, we're continuing that story and hearing about what her family dynamic looks like now. She's also sharing on the stereotypes of birth moms, rights that birth moms should have, and how we can all be better advocates for such an underprivileged group of women. Adoption and birth stories aren't the only thing Raquel likes to share about, though. She also gets super vulnerable online sharing about mental health struggles, body positivity and self love, parenting, marriage, and many other hard but beautiful things that we can all relate to! Over the course of her online growth, Raquel has had to endure a lot of critics. But as she would tell you, it's worth it to reach those who she knows can relate to her struggles. Those who have felt isolated and alone for so long and didn't know there was anyone else out there who understood how they felt. She has found purpose in her pain and in her journey and isn't going to let a few online haters stop her from sharing it! “Truly, this child saved my life.” Those are powerful words, especially when they're coming from an unplanned teen pregnancy… Raquel often gets told that her story sounds like a Lifetime Original. After listening today, you're going to understand why! Today, Raquel is getting super vulnerable and sharing about her childhood trauma, stories of abuse, and placing her first child up for adoption. We're also hearing a few of the highlights, including the very romantic story of a Taco Bell boy! Raquel is no stranger to vulnerability. After coming out on the other side of so much trauma, she knew she had to share her story with the hope of helping others in vulnerable situations. What started with local high school ministry has turned into thousands of people, particularly women and fellow birth mothers, following along with her journey. Sometimes Raquel has to endure some online critics, but she pushes through the hate and keeps opening up so that we can learn from her experiences. Sometimes, she also has to do multiple podcast interviews when her interviewer loses the audio files! For that, she is truly a champion in my book! Next week Raquel will be back to talk more about the story of her relationship with her birth daughter, what her family looks like now, and how we can move forward after hearing her story and be better advocates for the vulnerable people around us. Something that Raquel shared with me in this interview is how birth moms can often be vilified in stories of adoption. I hope this episode challenges your perspective (and maybe some stereotypes you didn't even know you had) and reminds you to listen to untold stories like this one. Pause and consider how the experiences of others may be different than your own. Pause and consider that someone's pain may be greater than yours. What would the world look like if we paused and considered these things more? Dr. Marissa is back this week with more advice and tools for us on how we can reach solidarity and end hate of all kinds! Last week in Part 1, she shed light on some really devastating types of discrimination that are happening in our country. This week, we're continuing that conversation but she's also showing us the ways that we need to work on ourselves first before we can fix any of the problems we see in society. Once again, you're going to walk away inspired by this motivational speaker! Have you ever thought about the social impact of the jewelry you buy or the clothes you purchase? What about where you buy your groceries and home goods? Or, how about where you bank?! Naomi started Redeemed With Purpose 4 years ago with the mission of raising money to support organizations rescuing lives from human trafficking. But, over time she has come to recognize how much farther she can take her business to create sustainable social impact that goes far beyond donations, and it starts with some of these consumer decisions! Normally on my mini episodes I'm flying solo, but this week I invited Naomi on to share about these exciting updates. I originally met Naomi when I interviewed her for the podcast back on Episode 27, but we've been friends ever since! I am a representative for her brand and love being involved with such an important mission. When Naomi shared about expanding her shop to feature more fair trade and responsibly made products from around the globe, I wanted to give her an even bigger platform to spread the news! In this episode Naomi is also talking about another change she made to RWP, which was changing her hosting site that she sells her products on. After a few years selling on Etsy, Naomi made some startling discoveries about what the site supports and promotes. Ever since this discovery she's been on a mission to hold Etsy accountable, and part of that was switching to Shopify! This is important info to know for any small business owners out there, but it's also a much bigger conversation on conscious consumerism and what to think about when we're choosing where to shop. Growing up in a predominantly white community, Dr. Marissa felt ashamed of her background and her heritage. Over the years, however, she has learned to embrace who she is and to be proud of where she came from. Now, the woman dubbed “the Asian Oprah” is on a mission to help others find this same freedom and joy in who they are. Part of that mission is embracing cultural diversity and group differences! Discrimination against Asians has happened for a long time in this country, but just recently has it received the attention it deserves. Over AAPI Heritage Month, Dr. Marissa and I sat down to talk about how we can see Asian hate come to an end. Today in Part 1, she's sharing about the history of Asian hate and her own personal journey with it. Next week in Part 2, we'll be talking more about how we can be a part of systemic change to see this discrimination end. One of Dr. Marissa's many roles includes being a motivational speaker. Thousands of people across the United States don't currently have an address or a roof over their heads. This problem can often feel much too big to solve - but could it be possible that such a massive crisis has some simple solutions? Today, Melany Jackson is back to teach us what we can do to help folks without homes, and I'm telling you - it's easier than you think! Last week, Melany shared with us about the nonprofit ministry she started in Central Illinois to help be a part of systemic change for friends without addresses. This time, she's sharing more about homelessness as it relates to our country. We're talking about stats, causes, and common misconceptions about the homeless population. We're also discussing what it's truly like to live on the streets and how we should handle situations of panhandling. I found this conversation so helpful as someone who always wants to help those in need, but isn't always sure what to say or do when I find myself in those situations! While Melany does share some great tips and conversation starters for these times, her biggest message is this: treat them with dignity. We're talking about real human lives here, so it makes sense that the most practical and impactful thing we can do is to treat them like fellow human beings. Doing things like making eye contact, saying hi, and showing basic kindness can make a huge difference in the life of someone who is homeless and often ignored. This practice can also help us to have more empathy for our brothers and sisters in need. After all, isn't that how we would want to be treated if we were in their shoes? Half a million. That's the approximate number of people living without addresses in the United States. And that number is closer to billions when we look from a global scale! To say that homelessness is a crisis is an understatement. Sometimes, this problem feels way too big to even solve, but the ministry that Melany Jackson started says otherwise. C-U at Home exists to serve folks without an address in the Central Illinois community. While most of you listening to this episode likely don't live there, the principles of Melany's nonprofit can apply no matter where we live! Today on the show, Melany is sharing the journey of starting this organization and how it has grown over the years. She's sharing about some of the key components of their services and the events they hold, including an event that literally gets hundreds of people from the community sleeping in boxes on the street in the middle of a Midwest winter. This organization is having a tremendous impact in a region that needs it, and we can all learn from it! Next week in Part 2, Melany is going to share about what we can do to help with the epidemic of homelessness wherever we're located. We've all been approached by people asking for money on the streets, and for many of us we're left wondering what the “right” thing to do in these situations is. Melany's addressing this and more next week! My biggest takeaway from today, though, is that it's all about relationships. As Melany puts it, there isn't a 12-step program that is going to fix the issue overnight. Instead, it's about investing in people to breed real, systemic change that sticks! You're going to be inspired once you hear about Melany's approach to doing this. I've said it before and I'll say it again - none of us is too small to make a difference in this world. Haley is back again this week to remind us of just that! In her own life, Haley has embraced living in what she calls “the messy middle.” We might not be able to do sustainability or ethical shopping perfectly all the time, but it's about making the little changes that we can and embracing the collective impact we have. This is true in her socially conscious fashion brand, Atonement Design, and even in her day-to-day lifestyle. In Part 1 last week, Haley shared all about her brand and the amazing products she sells, and also how she started her small business to help fight slavery. I love brands like hers that curate the best products that we can buy with confidence without having to do the background research on them ourselves! This week, we're focusing on her favorite tips on how we can create sustainable AND achievable habits in our every day lives. We're also getting into some of the nitty gritty details of Haley's personal life today. Haley, like me, describes herself as someone who struggles with having a filter. While some people might see this as a bad thing, Haley embraces it about herself and uses the platform she has to talk about things (on top of slavery and sustainability) that truly matter. She gets personal in this episode and shares a little bit about her faith, her family, and even her journey with fertility. I appreciate Haley's vulnerability in all of these areas and the ways that she is empowering women, men, and consumers of all kinds that they're not alone! It's (almost) officially summer in the Northern Hemisphere! Summer is my FAVORITE time of year, in part because I love to travel and have people visit! Living in a tourist destination like Charleston, SC has brought no shortage of visitors, and I often get asked for tips on what to do and what to see, and of course where to eat. I've lived here for a few years now and have tons of recommendations, but I've also seen the need for more education on what NOT to do when you're here. So, listen in for the best way to do Charleston while keeping it ethical and sustainable. I wrote a blog post on this topic last month, so if you'd rather read in full detail you can find the link to that below. For a quick run-down on my seven tips, listen along as I cover the following: Bring your own reusable bag with you. Visit the South Carolina Aquarium. 81: Enlighten Me on Sustainable-ish Living - Part 1

Living sustainably in a world where fast fashion and fast food exist is not easy. In fact, it's something that can cause burnout really quickly! But the good news is, it's not solely up to us. The world isn't going to be changed by one person doing things perfectly. It's when we all take small steps together that our collective efforts make an impact. This was a message I needed to be reminded of, so my interview with Haley couldn't have been more timely! This fashion lover and small business owner is on a mission to make sustainable and ethical living more accessible to us all. When Haley Jaeger first learned about the crisis of human slavery around the world, she knew she had to do something about it. As a creative gal with a passion for fashion, starting a socially conscious fashion brand seemed like a logical step. However, she quickly realized that the markup of the fair trade items she was selling was something that even she couldn't afford! This is when the idea of sustainable-ish living, or as she calls it - “the messy middle” - was born. Haley's shop now features a larger variety of guilt-free items that cater to all kinds of price ranges. Oh, and not to mention that it's all beautiful! We'll be talking more about “the messy middle” in Part 2 next week with Haley, but for now she's sharing about her journey as a business owner and conscious consumer and also telling us about some of the ways she likes to live more sustainably. And this isn't just for the fashion lovers, either! All of us as consumers have something to learn and ways that we can be more mindful in our purchasing patterns, and Haley provides a safe place to do just that. Is it just me, or is it getting harder and harder to find a trustworthy and unbiased information source these days? I know it's not just me - thanks to political agendas and social media, misinformation is a common problem, especially when it comes to all things Covid-19! That's why I wanted to have someone truly knowledgable about these topics (like an actual scientist) on the show to educate us. Welcome back Kennen, the virologist and science communicator! Last week on the show, Kennen and I talked broadly about vaccine safety and he answered a lot of recurring questions people have. (Spoiler alert - vaccines don't cause autism!) This week in Part 2, we're narrowing in the focus to discuss what is up with the Covid-19 vaccines. How do they work? What do they protect us against? Why should I get one if I'm young and healthy? Will it change my DNA?! These are just a FEW of the questions Kennen is answering. Trust me, y'all - I kept him on this call for a long time and didn't hold back, and Kennen didn't disappoint. No matter where you stand in the vaccine conversation, my hope for today is that you walk away with the knowledge you need to make the decision that's best for yourself and your family. I also hope that you will walk away with a little more trust in science, because science is pretty cool. Having doubts over the “big pharma” industry is reasonable, but I was comforted by the fact that there are trustworthy scientists who stand behind this research and these injections. Oh, and I think you will also walk away a little more hopeful about finally seeing this pandemic come to an end. Can I get a “Praise the Lord!”? VACCINE. Does that word scare you to read? It's understandable if it does - vaccines are the only medicine we give to people who are totally healthy. BUT, do the benefits of what they provide outweigh the risks of what they prevent? That's what we as adults and as parents have to decide, and this conversation is here to give you the information you need to help with that decision process. Misinformation around vaccines is nothing new, but it's running rampant even more so than normal thanks to Covax! I've had questions about vaccines for a long time, and when the first Covid-19 vaccine became available I knew I needed to speed up my timeline for this episode. So, I sat down with a REAL expert on the topic! Kennen Hutchison is a virologist working on his PhD at Northwestern University. He quite literally studies viruses and vaccines for a living, so you can have confidence listening to this that he is qualified to speak on the topic! In the first half of our conversation, Kennen and I are talking broadly about vaccine safety. He's answering common questions like, what's the link between vaccines and autism? And, how effective is the flu shot really? Next week in Part 2, Kennen and I will be focusing specifically on the Covid-19 vaccine. But for now, having the base knowledge of how vaccines work and whether or not they are good for our bodies is going to help you more than you realize, especially for those of you who are parents having to make many a vaccine decision! Talking about environmentalism extends far beyond the color of our skin. That was one of my big takeaways from this episode with Kim and Aliya in Part 2 of our conversation on environmental racism. While what's taking place on our planet does disproportionately affect communities of color, its has impacts on us all - especially on the generations that will come after us - and that's why it deserves all of our attention. Last week in Part 1, I introduced you to Kim and Aliya - two mamas on a mission to educate and uplift the Black community on bringing safer and more sustainable home and self care options into their homes. I love everything about what they're doing and am personally a huge fan of the products they sell! We're talking more about those today and how they pick out the brands and products they showcase on their marketplace. But we're also talking more about the WHY behind it all. Whether you're white or a person of color, whether you're a parent to littles or to fur babies, you need to hear what these two have to say.  Learning about environmental racism matters. There are marginalized communities receiving a lower quality of life by no fault of their own other than the color of the skin they were born with and the neighborhood they grew up in. That's unjust. But, I love it when conversations around niche topics like these evolve into greater ones on being a more conscious consumer, and, overall, a better human. Kim and Aliya and giving us plenty of methods and asking plenty of probing questions to get you to think about both of those things today. Sustainability and race - did you have any idea that these two things intersected? Well, they do, and in a pretty big way. Environmental racism is something that many people are unaware of and that gets overlooked quite often, and yet its implications on health and wellness are astronomical! That's what Kim and Aliya are here today to share about. These two sorority sisters-turned-business partners are women on a mission to bring eco-friendly and Black-owned baby products to consumers doorsteps and to make sure they are educating about social justice along the way. When I first came across Kim and Aliya's business, my first reaction was to get as many products from their site onto my baby registry as possible! After seeing the heart behind their work, though, I knew I needed to get them on the show. Today in Part 1, the Evergreen Baby team is teaching us about what environmental racism is and what it really looks like. This is a vast concept with many nuances to it, but they do a great job of giving us a rundown complete with examples and concerning effects of this type of injustice. Next week in Part 2, Kim, Aliya and I will be talking more about their business and the products they sell. I wanted to know what their standards were for selling “eco-friendly” products and how they know that these items are truly safe. We talk about that and also about how we can help to fight the systematic oppression that is environmental racism, no matter what color we are! I absolutely loved learning from this duo and the information they shared with me has forever impacted my consumer habits. I think you'll find the same to be true for you! If you're like me, you have lots of visitors tracking in and out of your house during the summer months. Outside of asking them to take off their shoes like I talked about in the EMM episode for February, something else I've educated my house guests on is making sure they shut that lid! Have you ever thought about why toilets have lids in the first place? No, it's not just for keeping the dog from drinking the toilet water…though after listening today, you'll want to do that too. The lids are there to keep the germs inside the bowl and prevent them from getting on your toothbrush and your other bathroom supplies. Myth Busters did an episode several years back in which they investigated the aerosol effect of toilets. There have actually been several published studies looking at this effect and just how far it can carry, along with WHAT exactly it carries. Spoiler alert: there could be Covid-laden bacteria in your toilet bowl! Listen in on this mini segment of the podcast for why you need to put the lid down, please! Listener beware - if you're not ready for your core fears and desires in life to be exposed, this episode may not be for you! Just kidding. Well, sort of… Today on the podcast Jess Gartner is back to finish up our conversation on the Enneagram. This personality tool has become one of the most popular out there because, not only is it pretty spot-on, but it will help you to know what to do with your personality type and how to make sure you stay in a healthy place. In Part 1 last week, Jess and I joked that if you don't want more self-awareness then the Enneagram probably isn't for you. But really, who doesn't need more self-awareness in their life?! The beautiful thing about this conversation, though, is that it's not just about US - it's also about how we can have increased empathy and understanding in our relationships with those around us. Again, who doesn't need more of that in their life?! In that episode we also started diving into the first three types of the Enneagram. So today, we're wrapping it up with types 4 through 9. Personally, I'm a type 7, so this episode is even more exciting to me! No matter what number you identify with, though, it's important to get a good understanding of them all for a few reasons. First, it can help you confirm what type you are. Second, even once you know your type, you must recognize that we all have connections to several other types on the diagram. And third, it's good to know what the other numbers mean so that you can have a little more appreciation when you meet people who are different than you! (Hint: some of these people may be living in your very own house…) While analyzing personality types is always an interesting conversation to me, Jess's main message today is to have compassion. It's something we need for ourselves and for our loved ones as we navigate this journey we call life. And hey, now that you know better, you can continue to do better! Have you heard the hype? The Enneagram is the personality test to beat all personality tests. But, it's much more than just giving you a bunch of numbers or letters to tell you about your traits and strengths. This model is actually designed to be a tool to tell us what to watch out for in our habits and tendencies and also to increase our empathy and understanding in relationships. That's what Jess, the Enneagram coach, is here to tell us about today! Jess Gartner has a hard time describing herself because she has her hand in A LOT of things! One of those is podcasting, which is how we first got connected. I was on her show a few months back and had such a fun time talking with her that I knew I needed to get her on my show, too. The most important hats that she wears, though, are those of mom and wife. That was probably my biggest takeaway from today's episode - how the Enneagram can make such an impact on the close, personal relationships in your life! Since we chatted, I have already recounted so much of the information that Jess shared with me in conversations with my friends, my husband, and even my counselor! If you're a personality test skeptic, let me tell you this isn't your average strengths-finder quiz. The Enneagram is so much more! In Part 1 today, Jess is explaining all the major components of how the Enneagram works, where it comes from, and how to use it in our every day lives. We're also diving into the nine different personality types. Heads up - you might start sweating when you hear your type identified! We're just discussing the first three today so you'll have to tune back in for Part 2 to hear the rest. But whatever number you identify with, remember that learning about all the numbers can be so helpful to your relationships at work and at home. I always love when I schedule an interview because I think other people need to hear the content, and instead I end up getting a personal counseling session that I didn't know I needed. Christina and Pai are back this week with more good advice for navigating the uniqueness and beautiful differences of relationships! While we're primarily talking about intercultural and interracial relationships like theirs, what they share is applicable no matter what type of relationship you're in. To view the full show notes, continue reading here or visit my website: http://www.heartfelthippie.com (www.heartfelthippie.com) In Part 1 of my interview with Pai and Christina last week, they shared about their dating story and what it was like journeying through a relationship with two people (and two families) coming from two very different cultures. They have learned a lot about healthy communication and compromise along the way, and they dealt out their best advice for all of us to learn from. Today, the good advice continues, but we're also diving a little deeper. I asked Christina and Pai to share about how becoming parents has impacted the celebration of cultures in their home, and also how it has changed their outlook on the climate of our country in this time. As Pai states, 2020 was a hard year for everyone - but especially so for people of color and people in interracial relationships. Christina opened up about how, even as a white woman, the events of the year directly impacted her. Pai discussed how he appreciated so many aspects of unity and a desire to learn that he witnessed, but also about how exhausting that was for him and how he had to learn to point folks to other resources besides himself. Their main messages of asking intentional questions, listening well, and letting our differences bring us together rather than divide us ring so true on the topic of racism and beyond. Get excited, because the wisdom doesn't stop here. Season 2 of Pai and Christina's podcast is currently in the works, so you'll get to hear even more from them soon! Have you ever thought about it? We're the only species on earth who drinks another species milk, and the only species who drinks milk for life. Strange, right? It's no wonder that up to 50% of people struggle with lactose intolerance - maybe it's because we were never meant to consume cow's milk in the first place! Don't get me wrong - I love me some cheese and ice cream. But, do we really need to be consuming dairy milk as much as 90's campaign ads led us to believe? Turns out that we can get protein, calcium, and fat from plenty of other foods, including non-dairy beverages! Today on the show I am sharing some delicious, healthy, and more sustainable alternatives to cow's milk that you can find in the store. In doing a little research, one thing I learned is that it depends on what you need milk for to decide what milk alternative is best for you. Your needs might vary depending on if you're looking for the right thing to transition your little one from breastmilk versus if you're looking for something to top off your coffee in the morning. I'm discussing a few of those options in the show and also advising you on what ingredients to watch out for! In this episode I'll also describe the super easy method for making your own mylk. Spoiler alert: you only need two ingredients (and one of them is water). Non-dairy milks don't just have health benefits, but this way they can be even more affordable! When two cultures collide, beautiful things can happen. Christina and Pai's marriage is a picture of just that! A Black Zimbabwean and a white Tennessean don't make up your ordinary couple - when Pai and Christina first got together, they felt that firsthand. Between their journeys of dating in a town where no one looked like them, direct experiences with racism, and joining families of two very different cultures together, this couple recognized that there was some community missing here. Now, they're on a mission to help others navigate intercultural and interracial relationships. To view the full show notes, continue reading here or visit my website: http://www.heartfelthippie.com (www.heartfelthippie.com) After I learned about Pai and Christina's podcast and online work, I knew I had to talk to them. I especially wanted to get their perspective on what it's like being in an interracial and intercultural marriage (and doing some parenting along the way!) while living in America. In Part 1 of our conversation, they're sharing all the details of their story. We're talking about how they met and the early years of their dating relationship, planning an intercultural wedding, and what some of the biggest lessons they have learned over the years have been that they like to share with others. To be honest, when I first sat down with this couple I didn't expect to be able to relate to so many different parts of their story and the obstacles they have faced. I'm not in an intercultural or interracial marriage myself, so I wasn't thinking that I would learn much from them that I could personally apply. Boy - was I wrong! There were so many times throughout our interview that I told Pai and Christina that the messages they were preaching were helpful for ANYONE in ANY kind of relationship - romantic or otherwise! So, enjoy this free counseling session you didn't know you needed. Next week in Part 2, we're diving further into the hard topics. We'll be talking specifically about the racial climate in the United States over the past year and how it has affected Pai and Christina, and how it's changed their outlook on parenting. This couple has a lot of wisdom to share and, get excited, because they have more of it coming on season 2 of their own podcast that they're recording now! Just as no one chooses their skin color, no one chooses what country they are born in or what language they grow up speaking. That's something I was reminded of in my discussion with Sarah on immigration, and yet it's something that gives many of us great privilege that we have done nothing to deserve. Chances are if you're reading this, you've benefited from some of that privilege yourself. Sarah is back this week to share about how we can harness that privilege to help those around us. In Part 1 of our conversation last week, Sarah spent a lot of time answering all the questions I had about immigration policy in the US. I'll be honest - I didn't know half as much as I thought I did about this topic! It was so great to learn from someone who has not only done her research and has the statistics to prove it, but from someone who's on the frontlines and sees the ins and outs of our current immigration setup on a daily basis. That's what Sarah is chatting about with us today - she's sharing the frontline work she and her team do through Casa de Paz. This organization has grown leaps and bounds since Sarah first started it nearly 9 years ago, and the work that they do is truly admirable. The best part about it, though? We can all be involved from wherever we're at! Sarah is providing us with some ways that we can contribute to correcting this broken system, whether it's with The Casa or elsewhere. She's got all kinds of resources for us on how we can become more educated and take a stand for our fellow human beings. Because that's what this is really all about, isn't it? Treat others how you'd like to be treated - it's the golden rule we can probably all agree on, right? We can also probably all agree that it's much easier said than done, especially when it comes to divisive political topics. I've said it before with issues discussed on this show - when we make things out to be “political,” we lose sight of the heart of the matter. Specifically, humanity. So, let's set aside our political alignments and policy beliefs as we learn together today on a very broken system in our country - immigration. When Sarah Jackson signed up to take a trip to the US and Mexico border, she was mostly in it for the all-expenses-paid vacation she thought she'd be getting. Little did she know that this trip would not only change her views on immigration in America, but it would propel her into her life's mission with her current organization. Case de Paz is going on 9 years now of serving immigrants and their families who have been detained in ICE facilities. The work that they do is simply amazing, but that's not all that Sarah is here to share about today. I asked Sarah to come on the show because I think immigration is something we all could stand to learn a little more about. Because it's so often viewed solely as a political topic, many of us rely on politicians to be our sources of information and don't truly understand the process that takes place. Today in Part 1, Sarah is sharing what it's like to be an immigrant coming to the United States and she's answering common questions like, “Why don't immigrants just come here the legal way?” She takes a faith-based approach for much of what we discuss, and I think you'll see why this is such a beautiful and important way to look at things. No matter where you live or where you stand in your views, keep in mind that immigration is a global issue, not just one that America deals with. Education is the starting point for change when it comes to this topic and so many others, so keep your heart (and your ears) open as Sarah shares about her experiences and the stories of her friends with us! Oh, and make sure you tune back in for Part 2 next week where Sarah is sharing more about Casa de Paz and how we can get involved to make a difference in the lives of the disadvantaged.  Links from the show: Shop Redeemed With Purpose - Use code MACKENZIEN for 15% off: https://www.redeemedwithpurpose.com/ “The House that Love Built” by Sarah Jackson: https://www.casadepazcolorado.org/book Connect with Mackenzie: Instagram: @theheartfelthippie // @the.enlightenme.podcast Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theheartfelthippie/ (https://www.facebook.com/theheartfelthippie/) Website: http://www.heartfelthippie.com (www.heartfelthippie.com) Email: mackenzie.heartfelthippie@gmail.com Connect with Sarah: Website: https://www.casadepazcolorado.org/ (https://www.casadepazcolorado.org/) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CasaDePazCo/ (https://www.facebook.com/CasaDePazCo/) Instagram: @casadepazco Book: https://www.casadepazcolorado.org/book (https://www.casadepazcolorado.org/book)

When it comes to diapers, most parents are looking for the easiest option out there. That's part of why disposables are so popular! But, if you tuned in last week, you know that when you choose disposables you might be sacrificing a lot of things that you're not okay with. So, how can we make cloth diapering a little easier? That's what Bailey and I are here to do today! In Part 2, Bailey is tackling the “how-to's” of cloth diapers and answering all the questions you might have. To view the full show notes, continue reading here or visit my website: http://www.heartfelthippie.com (www.heartfelthippie.com) What type of diaper is best for me? How many different types are there?! Where is the best place to buy cloth diapers? And how in the world do I clean these things? These are just a few of the common questions that any cloth diapering mama might have. Well, Bailey and I giving you the straight poop on how cloth diapers actually work. We're talking about how you can make sure your diapers are truly getting clean and providing plenty of other resources to give you some support on this parenting and diapering journey, both for the stay-at-home parents and the working ones! One of my biggest takeaways from what Bailey shared was the encouragement that we don't have to do things perfectly to make a difference. Even if we still use the occasional disposable diaper, or if we're only using cloth diapers on the weekends, our choices as consumers and as caretakers still hold a lot of impact. Cloth diapering - it's not just for the crunchy crazies or the eco-friendly angels! And actually, it's not just for parents of toddlers to know about, either. The disposable diaper industry has been able to change a whole way of thinking to make us think that anything besides what they have to offer is unsafe, unsanitary, and just plain weird. Today, Bailey is on the show to tell us why that's far from the truth. To view the full show notes, continue reading here or visit my website: http://www.heartfelthippie.com (www.heartfelthippie.com) While this topic might seem like one that's exclusively for stay-at-home mamas, after listening I think you'll see that that's simply not the case. We all should be aware of the diaper industries major impact on our economy and on our environment. Whether you're currently a parent or not, learning about this topic can affect you as a consumer and can give you some helpful info to share with your friends! Today, Bailey - a mom of two, author, and fellow podcaster - is sharing about her own journey as a cloth-diapering mama. She's also explaining what some of the biggest benefits to using cloth diapers are and why you may want to consider them over the more wasteful, more expensive, and potentially unsafe alternative of disposable diapers. Something you should know as you listen is that this is a judgement-free zone. Bailey and I aren't here to tell you that you have to use cloth diapers to be a good person. Instead, we're here to help you be a more mindful consumer and make the best decision for your family. Next week on Part 2, Bailey and I will be going through the “how-to's” of cloth diapering. Vote with your dollar! Most of us have heard this phrase before, but how exactly do we do that? Today in Part 2 of our conversation, Bethany and I are discussing how we can be more mindful consumers and ways that we should think twice about where we invest our money. Last week, we talked about some of the ethical issues that MLM businesses present. Well, there's a little more of that happening this week - but really, this is a much bigger conversation about being conscious consumers. To view the full show notes, continue reading here or visit my website: http://www.heartfelthippie.com (www.heartfelthippie.com) In Part 1, Bethany and I broke down how MLM structures actually work and why they can tow the line of…well, operating illegally. Today, we're diving more into the ethical side of things! Until Bethany educated me on this, I had no idea that this type of business plan intersected with such topics as feminism or being a small business owner. We're talking about that more in this episode and how we should proceed knowing this information - both as consumers and as potential entrepreneurs! Overall, Bethany's biggest message isn't that you should never buy from an MLM again. There's not many episodes I'm nervous about doing, but this was definitely one of them! Multi-level marketing companies often get a bad rap. But why? What's really going on here? Today on the show, my friend Bethany is sharing all about the research she's done on these businesses and why there may be some ethicality issues that many of us as consumers (and even as entrepreneurs) are blind to. To view the full show notes, continue reading here or visit my website: www.heartfelthippie.com Bethany is not only a good friend of mine, but she's also a marketing professional, which makes her the perfect person to speak into this topic! Many of us have had friends, or sometimes even strangers, present us with business opportunities that seem too good to be true where we're left wondering what the deal is... Well, that's what Bethany is here to share about! But, before we dive in, we both want to be very clear that we're not here to be MLM haters. We recognize that for some folks, MLM's are a big part of their livelihood, and that's okay! As Bethany says - you do you. But, that doesn't change the fact that there's some things we all need to be aware of before we buy from or work for these companies. There's a lot of MLM's out there, and a lot of them are dealing with legal issues. So, Bethany is educating us on how many of these brands cross the line of ethics and legal practices in their structure. Really though, this conversation is much more broadly about mindful consumerism. Again, we're not here to be anti-MLM proponents, but we're here to help you think twice about where you're putting your dollar and what kind of world you're voting for when you do. This will be discussed even more on Part 2, so make sure you tune in next week to hear more from Bethany! Being a responsible traveler isn't about checking items off of a list. It's about dedicating yourself to being a lifelong learner - something I'm a huge advocate for - to consistently be aware of ways you can live more mindfully. What a great mindset, and not just for travel right?! Today, Erin is back on the show to continue to teach us about being responsible travelers. To view the full show notes, continue reading here or visit my website: http://www.heartfelthippie.com (www.heartfelthippie.com) Last week on Part 1, Erin and I went through 7 of her 10 best tips for being a responsible tourist. We talked about things like acknowledging diversity and being respectful of other cultures - it was truly an enlightening time with so many good lessons that apply to many areas of life even beyond tourism. Today, we're going through the rest of Erin's tips and focusing mostly on the sustainability side of travel. There are so many ways to reduce our environmental impact while traveling and Erin has plenty of great ideas for us.  I loved all of Erin's advice and it has me excited to plan my next trip, whether it's an international getaway or a local road trip! Even though many of us are currently unable to travel, I think you will find this time with Erin inspirational and it will help you to be a little more mindful the next time you hop on a plane, on a train, or even in your car with tent in tow.  Links from the show: Shop Redeemed With Purpose Jewelry - use code MACKENZIEN for 15% off: https://www.redeemedwithpurpose.com/shop (https://www.redeemedwithpurpose.com/shop) Pina Travels Blog Post: https://www.pinatravels.org/discoveries/responsible-tourist?rq=responsible (https://www.pinatravels.org/discoveries/responsible-tourist?rq=responsible) Alpaca My Bags Podcast Episode with Natasha Daly: https://www.pinatravels.org/episodes/animal-tourism (https://www.pinatravels.org/episodes/animal-tourism) Grayl Water Bottles: https://grayl.com/ (https://grayl.com/) Alpaca My Bags Podcast Episode with Evelina Utterdahl: https://www.pinatravels.org/episodes/sustainable-travel (https://www.pinatravels.org/episodes/sustainable-travel) “Little Fires Everywhere” by Celeste Ng https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/51704136-little-fires-everywhere (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/51704136-little-fires-everywhere) You're Wrong About Podcast: https://yourewrongabout.com/ (https://yourewrongabout.com/) Connect with Mackenzie: Instagram: @theheartfelthippie // @the.enlightenme.podcast Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theheartfelthippie/ (https://www.facebook.com/theheartfelthippie/) Website: http://www.heartfelthippie.com (www.heartfelthippie.com) Email: mackenzie.heartfelthippie@gmail.com Connect with Erin: Instagram, TikTok, and other socials: @pinatravels Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PinaTravels/ Website: https://www.pinatravels.org/ Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/alpaca-my-bags/id1449041086

“Leave a place better than you found it.” That was always the golden rule when I went to Girl Scout camp as a little kid, but I haven't thought about the concept much since then. But, have you ever considered the responsibility we have as travelers to other cities, states, and countries? The idea of traveling responsibly is much bigger than picking up your trash wherever you go (though, you should do that, too). Today on the show, travel blogger and podcaster Erin Hynes is sharing what responsible tourism really looks like. Erin is a Canadian gal but started traveling the world at a young age. It was these experiences with other cultures that led her to recognize some ways she could be a little more mindful while traveling. Her blog and podcast are dedicated to exploring topics like these more - she is particularly passionate about discussing sustainability and diversity and how they connect with travel.  As someone who loves to travel myself (and someone who is bored of being at home), I was stoked to get to learn from Erin and dream of someday hopping on a plane and heading overseas again! In this episode Erin is giving us 10 ways that we can be more responsible tourists and, let me tell you, these will change the way you view travel for good! In Part 1, we're chatting about ways that we can be mindful of other cultures we encounter and how tourism affects local people groups. “The hidden danger is in the combined effect of repeated small exposures and accumulation over time of all the toxic substances we encounter little by little, day by day.” - Pop of Health on Instagram You might be thinking, how could a few parabens in my shampoo or a little synthetic fragrance in my perfume be so harmful? Well, it's probably not that bad on it's own. But, when we consider that we encounter these toxins in small amounts every hour of every day, that adds up to a lot of toxic exposure! There's no way to know how these toxins are going to affect our health, so why not reduce them where we can? Removing your shoes before going inside is one small way to keep toxins out of your home! Several studies have proven that our shoes track in loads of bacteria and toxins thanks to all the places we wear them. (Think about that mysterious liquid you stepped on in that public restroom last week…now think about tracking that onto your carpet. Bleh!) These bacteria can live on our shoes for up to weeks at a time, so let's play it on the safe side and kick off our kicks before we step inside. Today, I'm sharing my tips for how to start implementing the new habit of removing your shoes before going inside and how you can make your guests more comfortable with this house rule. It might be uncomfortable to implement at first but trust me, once you do it you'll be glad you did! Not only are you reducing your toxic exposure, but this means less cleaning for you! Yay! It's time to get LUPii! No, I don't mean crazy or silly. I'm referring to the newest plant-based protein bar on the market! Isabelle Steichen recently launched her business that's bringing delicious vegan protein without all the added sugar to our shelves. Why the name LUPii? Well, that name is in honor of the main ingredient in these bars - the small but mighty Lupini bean! That, along with a few other things, is what Isabelle is here to share about today. To view the full show notes, continue reading here or visit my website: http://www.heartfelthippie.com (www.heartfelthippie.com) Last week Isabelle came on the show to share about her journey of going plant-based and some of the biggest benefits she has seen from this lifestyle change. She shared then that cooking was not one of her fortes in her life as an omnivore, but out of necessity she has gotten pretty creative in the kitchen these days. Now, several years into her journey with veganism, and she can call herself a professional chef! Isabelle noticed there was a need in the market to provide some nutritious, protein-packed snack foods for vegans that didn't come with all the sugar and other additives. If you're an ingredient-checker like me, you know this is true! Now, she's running her business thanks to this one ingredient that so many of us are unfamiliar with. Before meeting Isabelle, I had never heard of the Lupini bean before. If you're right there with me, Isabelle is going to share about it's long history and many health benefits in Part 2 today. We also discuss how growing this specific plant is much more efficient than so many other types of agriculture. This led us into a discussion about the benefits that plant-based eating has not just on our own health, but on the health of our planet. No matter how plant-based you are (or aren't), this is something that every consumer needs to hear! Ultimately, Isabelle's main message stays the same - our food choices matter. Every time we go grocery shopping or head out to dinner and purchase things to eat, we're voting with our dollar for the kind of world we want. I don't say that to scare you, but rather to encourage you! You don't have to go 100% vegan to make a difference in your own life or the lives of animals. Your little steps matter, so keep taking them! And hey, why not start with a delicious LUPii bar? Growing up in Western Europe traditionally means eating a diet that is heavy with meat and cheese. However, after moving to NYC shortly after college, Isabelle decided it was time to cut those things out of her life for good! Just a few years later and now Isabelle Steichen is inspiring dozens of others to live a plant-based lifestyle through her creative ventures. To view the full show notes, continue reading here or visit my website: www.heartfelthippie.com Whether it be through her blog, her podcast, or her co-owned snack food business, Isabelle has dedicated much of her life to helping others on their journey with veganism. But, like I mentioned before, this wasn't always the way she lived her life. Today on the show, Isabelle is sharing about her journey to going plant-based. And really, not just her journey but her husbands too (who she herself calls a former “dedicated meat-eater!”). Isabelle has learned a lot since then and is now certified in plant-based nutrition! So, we're also chatting about some of the benefits she has reaped from a plant-based diet as well as a few of the common concerns from non-vegans about how this type of diet can affect their health. (Yep, you guessed it - we'll answer the infamous question of, “But where do you get your protein?!”).  I say this every time, but I learned so much from Isabelle! For instance, I need to make sure I'm taking my daily dose of B12 and getting enough fiber in my diet. No matter what kind of diet we eat, we should all be checking ourselves to make sure we're getting the right amount of nutrients that we need. But friends, be encouraged - you don't have to completely cut out meat and cheese and all the other animal products like Isabelle did to make a difference. Every purchase we make, every meal we cook, holds power to make an impact on our environment and on our health. So, let's all incorporate a little more plants in our life! For the third consecutive year my husband, Justin, is joining me on the podcast to take a look back at how 2020 went and some of the things we have planned for 2021. To view the full show notes, continue reading here or visit my website: http://www.heartfelthippie.com (www.heartfelthippie.com) One thing we always do in preparation of this time is listen back to last years Year in Review episode. Last year was comprised of a lot of parenting talk as we had recently become first-time parents. All that talk was paired with A LOT of baby crying in the background - how fitting! This year, there's much less parent talk and absolutely no baby cries. We actually got away for the weekend to do some New Years goal-setting and we recorded this episode while in our hotel room. Hopefully our neighbors didn't mind! In today's show, we're talking a lot about how 2020 went differently than we had planned and some of the good that came out of it. Of course, there are a few silly questions thrown in there, and I'm hoping that you find yourself laughing along with us and simultaneously being inspired as we enter 2021 together. But remember as you listen, this is just Part 1!  To be honest, I hadn't originally planned on splitting this episode into two parts when we first recorded. It shouldn't be surprising to me, though, that we just had so much fun with the listener questions that I didn't want to cut too much out! Entering a new year tends to bring up a time of reflection and resolutions for many of us. I love the idea of reflecting on the past year and thinking about what went well and what you'd like to see change. But, how many times have you made a New Year's resolution only to forget what that resolution was by the time March rolls around? No judgement - I've been there too! That's why my husband and I started doing some intentional goal-setting a few years back. We actually started the tradition of doing a one or two-night getaway (with just us) to have heart-to-heart conversations and set our priorities for the year ahead. Talking about setting goals is a little off-brand for me, but I decided to make it the focus for this months' mini episode because we get so many questions about it! Oftentimes, other couples want to know what exactly we discuss in this time and what types of questions we ask each other. I love sharing this information because it's one of my favorite things we do together - it's great for us individually, and it's so so good for our marriage and family dynamic. But hey, single people, don't get scared off! Goal-setting is obviously not just for couples, so I've purposefully included ways to make these conversations and times of reflection work for you, too. Whether you're married with kids, a young couple, a single person with a roommate, or riding totally solo, this here is for you. In this episode, I'll primarily discuss: Setting SMART goals, Using the 5 F's, Making a family mission statement, and Asking thought-provoking questions. And of course, how do you ensure that your kids are getting a good education and will be college-ready? These are just a few of the questions I had prepared for Iviana to answer. If you're like me, homeschooling sounds like a daunting task. I've met many a homeschooling mama and said to myself, “I could never do that!” But in this episode Iviana truly helped to demystify the process and make it seem so much more accessible for all kinds of parents.  One of my favorite takeaways from the show (and something I didn't previously know about homeschooling) is just how much you can adapt it to the needs of you and your children. Be it the time frame you're doing school in or the lessons themselves, there are ways to make homeschooling work for nearly any family. Whether you're a parent, a prospective mommy or daddy, or even just a curious public school worker, Iviana sheds some great insight and leaves us with lots of advice on homeschooling. If 2020 has taught us anything, it's that we all can stand to be prepared to educate at home because we never know what's coming! 58: Enlighten Me on Homeschooling - Part 1

Whether it's something we've been doing for a long time or something that was forced on us thanks to a pandemic, homeschooling has become a reality for many parents and kids around the world! What better time to learn more about it, right? To most of us, homeschooling seems like a daunting task. That's why I wanted to have Iviana on the show to help break it down for us and show us what really takes place in home education. No matter where you're at in life, parent or not, I think you will enjoy this conversation. Iviana offers some great insight into making decisions that are best for your family, and even into a lot of common stereotypes held about homeschooled kids (because, let's be honest, we all have them!). To view the full show notes, continue reading here or visit my website: http://www.heartfelthippie.com (www.heartfelthippie.com) Iviana Bynum didn't always see herself as a homeschooling mom. Originally a career-driven woman from New York and raised by a public school teacher, this mama is now living the farm life on her homestead in Puerto Rico with her husband and two kiddos. Talk about a lifestyle change! That's what Iviana and I focused on most in today's convo. We chatted about her personal journey to motherhood and staying at home with her kids, and we also talked about what some of her biggest challenges and her biggest rewards have been with educating from home. Ultimately, this conversation broke down a lot of barriers that many of us likely hold against homeschooling. And in Part 2, there's even more of that to come! For the second half of our interview Iviana helped to uncover some of the logistical aspects of homeschooling. How much does it cost? How do you make sure your kids are getting a quality education? Where do we go to get started?! If you've ever thought about homeschooling, this will be helpful information for you. If you're anti-homeschooling, be careful - this conversation may just change your mind! Due to the upcoming holiday, Part 2 will not be available until December 31st. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy Part 1 with Iviiana, and I also hope you get some time to rest and be on pause! Merry Christmas to all those who are celebrating, and we'll see you on New Years! 57: Enlighten Me on Racial Reconciliation - Part 2

It's official - this is one of my all-time favorite interviews in podcast history! I think Chris Singleton is not only an inspirational speaker, but someone who is great at speaking into the lives of people of all walks of life. No matter your skin color or background, you're going to learn so much from him. To view the full show notes, continue reading here or visit my website: http://www.heartfelthippie.com (www.heartfelthippie.com) In Part 1 of this interview, Chris shared about his mother's death and how that sparked a mission in him to spread a message of love. We discussed what racial unity means to Chris and what exactly it looks like, and today we're continuing that conversation as we discuss some hot-button topics like white privilege. I call this a hot-button topic because it can be so controversial, but what you'll learn from Chris today is that it really shouldn't be. He teaches us that we all have privileges - for some of us, those might be because of our skin color, but that doesn't mean that we haven't worked hard for what we do have or that we haven't had a hard life. Chris does a great job of explaining privilege and reminding us that, no matter where we come from or what we believe, we should show compassion to those who are struggling.  On this show Chris also encourages us with tips on how to approach tough conversations with those who might have different opinions than us on some of these things. Many of us have been here before, but in Chris' eyes it's not something to lose relationships over. Rather, we can do our duty by keeping these conversations going and not shying away from the uncomfortable with the promise that we are making a difference - even if that difference feels too small to see sometimes! Of course, I couldn't have Chris on the show without talking about some of his creative endeavors. Not only is he in the process of publishing his second children's book, but he recently was featured in a documentary! You'll find links to those things and everything else Chris and I referenced below. You're gonna want to keep track of this guy - he is a man on a mission and I just know he's going to continue to do mighty, mighty things!
