Mange med mage-tarmsykdommer sliter med smerter, og leter derfor etter metoder for å lindre disse, slik at de kan bedre livskvaliteten. Stadig flere er nysgjerrige på medisinsk cannabis, men få her i Norge har prøvd dette mot fordøyelsessykdommer. Reporter Fabian Lyseng har intervjuet Glenn Dahl, som har Crohns sykdom. Han har slitt med sterke smerter, men de siste fem årene har han fått smertelindring ved å bruke cannabis-produktet Bedrocan. I denne episoden møter du også Audun Stubhaug, som er professor og avdelingsleder ved Avdeling for smertebehandling ved Oslo universitetssykehus Ullevål. Han forklarer hvorfor smerter fra fordøyelsen og fra muskler og skjelett oppleves veldig ulikt. Videre deler han sine erfaringer både med morfin-preparater og medisinsk cannabis, forklarer forskjellen mellom virkestoffene THC og CBD i cannabis og kommer med råd til de som ønsker å prøve medisinsk cannabis mot smerter.

He started Bedrocan in the Netherlands as a family business, and he maintains these roots as Bedrocan continues to grow. Since 2003 Bedrocan provides standardised cannabis of pharmaceutical quality to the Dutch government. It's the oldest legal company in the world providing several, chemically different cannabis varieties to be used by patients on doctor's prescription and as a raw material for the pharmaceutical industry (API).For the past 20 years, Tjalling has developed and standardised unique methods of producing cannabis to pharmaceutical standards to a level achieved by no other company.His strong commitment to product quality resulted in the Dutch Bedrocan production facilities being approved for GMP (good manufacturing practice) by the Dutch Health Authorities in 2017.It is Erkelens' strong belief that there should be a clear distinction between medicinal and recreational use of cannabis and that patient needs for safe and consistent cannabis is a priority. He is convinced that this can be achieved by going through the official drug approval process. “Fully standardised medicinal cannabis is the foundation on which such approval can be achieved.

#005 – In this episode I meet Clark French and Leila Simpson from the United Patients Alliance (UPA). The organisation are a patients advocacy group who campaign for better access to medical cannabis in both the private and public health sectors. Some of the things Clark And Leila discuss in the episode include: - The UPA was founded in 2014 by Caroline Lucas and Professor David Nutt to raise awareness for medical cannabis. The organisation aims to support patients that use cannabis. The UPA is a support and advocacy group. - Currently there is no funding available for medical cannabis on the NHA as CCGs can't afford cannabis. A few private prescriptions are starting to happen, but are still quite rare. The cost for a private prescription is over 3x the street price for cannabis so many patients cannot afford it. - Some patients have said they can grow their own cannabis instead of paying for it privately. However this is not legal in the UK. - Carly's Barton a fellow patient, has an Amnesty campaign called 'Carly's Amnesty' to allow medical cannabis users to grow up to 9 plants for personal use. However, patients still encounter problems with the authorities and Carly's home was visited by the police and items related to the personal grow confiscated - There is a challenge in providing clinical evidence to satisfy NICE/ the medical establishment to show that Cannabis is safe. They require a body of evidence and the UPA are trying to help produce that body of evidence. - Stigma can still cause medicinal cannabis users problems with landlords and neighbours. - There is urgency as according to Clark patients as advocates are the 'Frontline of the battle.' Tjalling Erkelens, CEO of Bedrocan, joins us in our July digital workshop to discuss clinical trials and global cannabis distribution. Erkelens believes that some type of harmonization among European regulations is necessary for the global cannabis economy to continue maturing; having different regulations from country to country makes it very difficult to create a unified industry. Erkelens also notes that when medical cannabis companies begin to dabble in adult use, they often do a poor job of continuing to prioritize the patients. Regardless of the direction in which the global cannabis economy eventually moves, we must make sure that we never forget the needs of medical patients.

Tjalling Erkelens returns and is still based in the Netherlands but with a global cannabis footprint. He compares the global development of cannabis. Change and progress towards legalization, particularly for medicinal marijuana, are happening on all continents across the globe. But each country seems to be taking a different approach, and Tjalling feels it might be best to focus on alignment and harmonization to give patients consistency when traveling.

Tjalling Erkelens joins us and shares that Bedrocan’s growth is breathtaking. From a 200 kilo annual production, Tjalling’s operations have grown to now 5,000 kilos of annual production with an ability to quickly scale up to 9,000 kilos of annual production from his two sites in the Netherlands alone. Rather than call it cannabis, the team chooses to refer to the product as an API- an active pharmaceutical ingredient or flos- which is latin for flowers. In some way, Bedrocan is now working on product for Australia, the Czech Republic, Brazil, Italy, Germany, Finland, Poland, Macedonia, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Israel and for testing purposes, the UK. And in short order- Denmark & Greece.

Tjalling Erkelens. Under steinbittfiske i 2006 skjedde ulykka. Ei kraftig bølge traff fiskebåten Joachim bløda fisk på, og han fikk bløderkniven i låret. Den tynne kniven traff en nerve. Smertene blei konstante og voldsomme. Joachim har nå 6-7 i smerter på en skala fra 1-10. Beveger han seg for mye kan smertene komme helt opp i 10. Han har prøvd mange forskjellig medisiner. Paralgin Forte, Sarotex, Lyrica, Lipiderm-plaster, chilikrem og cannabismunnsprayen Sativex. Ingen har klart skikkelig å døyve de konstante smertene. Det eneste han mener har fungert er det nederlandske medikamentet Bedrocan, en medisinsk cannabis som det nederlandske helsedepartementet eksporterer til ulike land i Europa. Men ikke til Norge.
