This is a replay of episode 96 with Damian Mander, originally aired on August 11, 2021. Prepare to be riveted by the extraordinary saga of Damien Mander, a former military sniper turned vegan anti-poaching crusader, as he shares the intimate details of his harrowing journey from the battlefield to the front lines of wildlife conservation. Damien's raw account of grappling with the aftermath of military life, his descent into substance abuse, and the profound epiphany that led him to Africa reveals a man reborn with a fierce determination to defend the voiceless. Our conversation traverses the emotional landscape of his transformation, a stirring testament to the power of second chances and the indomitable human spirit to affect real, tangible change in the world. This episode is an evocative expedition into the heart of conservation, where Damien has dismantled the status quo by championing women's empowerment through the groundbreaking Akashinga program. Venture behind the scenes of the International Anti-Poaching Foundation (IAPF) with us, as we explore how this visionary initiative is reshaping the narrative of environmental stewardship. Discover how placing women at the helm is not only revolutionizing the field of conservation but also knitting together the fabric of local communities by weaving gender equality, job creation, and sustainable development into a cohesive strategy for lasting impact. Guest Bio: Australian-born Damien is an Iraq war veteran who served as a Naval clearance diver and Special Operations sniper for Australia. In 2009 while traveling through Africa, he was inspired by the work of rangers and the plight of wildlife. Liquidating his life savings, the International Anti-Poaching Foundation (IAPF) was established to be the last line of defense for nature. Over the past decade, the IAPF has scaled to train and support rangers which now help protect over 20 million acres of the African wilderness. In 2017 Damien founded ‘Akashinga - Nature Protected by Women', an IAPF program that has already grown to over 240 employees with 8 nature reserves in the portfolio. They are the only group of nature reserves in the world to be protected by women. Their goal is to employ 1000 women by 2026, protecting a network of 20 nature reserves. He is the winner of the 2019 Winsome Constance Kindness Gold Medal, a prestigious international recognition for services to animals and humans. Past recipients include Sir David Attenborough and Dr. Jane Goodall. He was featured in The Game Changers by Academy Award-winning director James Cameron and has now released another documentary with Cameron and National Geographic about his work with the women of Akashinga. He is a resident speaker for National Geographic and was featured in their magazine in 2019, has spoken at the United Nations, appeared three times on 60 Minutes, and was recognized by the Dutch Government as a Gender Champion. Before contact, Indigenous people made their own types of bannock and breads using camas bulbs, lichen, moss, cattails, roasted acorns and other plants and roots that were Indigenous to their traditional territories. After contact, Indigenous people began to use wheat and oat flour brought over by the Scottish during the fur trade. Flour was a non-Indigenous food but soon became the staple ingredient in bannock, and in the lives of Indigenous people.” https://martlet.ca/bannock-consuming-colonialism/ Colonialism “Colonialism has been defined as systems and practices that ‘seek to impose the will of one people on another and to use the resources of the imposed people for the benefit of the imposer' (Assante, 2006). Colonialism can operate within political, sociological, cultural values and systems of a place even after occupation by colonizers has ended. Colonization is defined as the act of political, physical and intellectual occupation of space by the (often forceful) displacement of Indigenous populations, and gives rise to settler-colonialism, colonial and neo-colonial relations, and coloniality.” https://www.yorku.ca/edu/unleading/systems-of-oppression/coloniality-and-settler-colonialism/ Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt A symbol and reminder of covenants between the 5 Nations of the Haudenosaunee and the Dutch Government that guided later treaty-building and envisaged a relationship of reciprocity and sharing (that all people sharing a territory should leave enough for others), a promise that many Indigenous people feel was broken many times. https://futurecitiescanada.ca/portal/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2022/02/fcc-civic-indigenous-tool3-teaching-twodishonespoon.pdf Foodways A term to describe peoples' cultural, social and economic food practices, habits and desires (Alkon et al.) https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0016718513000936 Kanyen'kehà:ka Mohawk language. https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/mohawk Sky Woman The story of how Sky Woman fell from Skyworld to start life on Turtle Island, passed down and told by different Iroquoian-speaking people to describe the creation of human life on earth but also telling aspects of the Original Instructions guiding relations between humans and the natural world (Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass). https://www.robinwallkimmerer.com/ Discussion Questions 1. In this week's episode of EURACTIV's Beyond the Byline podcast, we look at how a contentious migration law collapsed the Dutch government, marking the end of 13 years of leadership for the country's prime minister, Mark Rutte. The government's months-long negotiations to curb the influx of new migrants into the Netherlands were marred by political infighting, with limits on family reunification and the establishment of a two-tier asylum system proving particularly divisive. The events also speak to the significance of migration as a touchstone issue in EU politics, which is expected to be a hot topic in the upcoming European elections of 2024.
The Dutch government has officially collapsed! The Dutch government, that was so faithfully instituting the WEF's green energy policies to the detriment of farmers throughout their nation, has indeed imploded! Highlights: ● “But something did indeed rip apart the coalition, whatever it was, and the Dutch government has officially collapsed! In fact, it's being widely reported that the now former prime minister Mark Rutte is leaving politics altogether; he's done! Stick a fork in him! He's leaving politics for good!” ● “Back in March, in an absolutely stunning upset, the upstart populist pro-farmer party known as the Farmer Citizen Movement scored a massive victory in their provincial elections that determined the make-up of the Dutch Senate. The Farmer Citizen Movement is a brand new party that represents the persecuted farmers who've been protesting against their draconian government non-stop now for months!” ● “Dutch police consistently cracked down on the protestors, they pulled out their guns, and at one point, they even started firing. But despite all of these gestapo-like tactics, the Dutch farmers have refused to back down, they've been fighting back these last several months! What does it take to avoid global collapse? Is there still time? And if so, what are the societal, social, cultural and goal-oriented changes that we need to make to get there? This week's guest is one of the new generation of super-thinkers who have the capacity, individually and collectively, to bring into being that better future our hearts know is possible. Gaya Herrington received her first master's degree in Econometrics from the Liberal University of Amsterdam and her second master's in Sustainability from Harvard University. In between she worked for KPMG, for the Dutch Government as a regulator and then back to KPMG in the US, where she now lives. She is a member of the Transformational Economics Commission of the Club of Rome, a recurring guest lecturer at the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, and works at Schneider Electric as Vice-President of ESG Research. She wrote her thesis for her second Masters on the seminal Limits To Growth work that first came out in 1972. The paper she wrote as a result of this went viral - and she expanded it into a book called Five Insights for Avoiding Global Collapse. She has made this freely available by download and I have put a link in the show notes - because this is absolutely essential reading for anyone on this path. The take home message though, as you'll hear, is that if we all work together, there is still time. Which should be a fairly familiar idea to those of you who have listened to other guests. But this time, we'll really unpick the data and concepts behind it in the company of someone who has worked hard at the coal face of the old system and has seen how to change it. The government plans to pay out 1.5 billion Euros to farmers to close their farms permanently. This is all to allegedly stop "nitrogen pollution," however the excuse is absurd. The nitrogen pollution is not a problem. The destruction of the supply chain on top of already existing shortages is one of the most important problems worldwide. Still, most people are in no way prepared for what's coming next. It's one of the goals of the World Economic Forum's Great Reset to decimate the supply chain and energy grid worldwide. That's why we see so many other countries following suit at the same time. While the Netherlands stands out as the 2nd largest agricultural exporter worldwide, the rest of the European Union has announced similar plans. On top of Europe, Canada and the United States are pushing forward similar goals as the collapse of the western empire accelerates. New York City recently announced the plan for "food police" in order to cut down people's food consumption by force. Dutch Government To Forcibly Close 3,000 Farms
The Dutch government is set to apologize for its role in 250 years of slavery, with a court in the Netherlands clearing the way to hold an official ceremony to mark the decision next week. And, following the US-Africa Leaders Summit in Washington, DC, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud paid a visit to Minneapolis, Minnesota, the home of the US' largest Somali diaspora community. Also, negotiators are in Montreal, Canada, to try and halt the steep decline in biodiversity, but many activists worry that it could lead to Indigenous people being kicked off their ancestral lands. Plus, Cuba has authorized women to compete in boxing for the first time since former President Fidel Castro's revolution. The Hague is now trying to spearhead the human rights vetting of algorithms and the creation of a national database to keep track of the AI systems used by public bodies, anticipating two aspects of the AI Act, flagship legislation to regulate AI applications based on their potential for harm. “The AI Act should lead to explainable AI systems which respect human rights and lead to meaningful transparency that generates trust, which is, of course, a vital building block of a flourishing AI market and also important in a democracy,” Alexandra van Huffelen, the Dutch minister for digitalisation, told EURACTIV. The working agenda adopted by the government also includes new initiatives to foster digital skills and a digital wallet. Public register & supervision A new supervisory body, starting on 1 January 2023, will enforce a set of new rules that essentially anticipate the EU's upcoming rules regarding transparency obligations, compliance marking and the right to complain. Similarly, next month, the Dutch government will introduce a mandatory algorithm register for AI used by public bodies, from the central administration to the local authorities. The idea is that citizens cannot enjoy the right to redress unless they know that an AI is being used. In the original version of the AI Act, only providers of high-risk AI systems were obliged to register on an EU-wide database. However, following pressure from countries like the Netherlands, the obligation was also extended to public authorities who use an AI system. One of the blueprints for the algorithm transparency register is the one from the City of Amsterdam, which was set up voluntarily by three different groups: the general population, civil servants, and technical experts. “We need to work together with the companies. Otherwise, we cannot make our algorithms transparent. IT departments are definitively interested in opening up and having a dialogue,” a representative of the Municipality of Amsterdam told an event in the European Parliament last week. Impact assessment Moreover, public authorities will have to assess the algorithms' impact on human rights before they are used. For this purpose, the Dutch government developed an AI impact assessment for evaluating the human rights risks of the system, passing which the system will receive a conformity assessment mark. “Evaluating AI is not just looking at the technology, it's looking at the context where that technology is implemented. Friday, May 6th, 2022! New Quamfy Show! How was our community doing exactly one year ago? We look back and reflect on one of the biggest altcoin events of 2021 which happened almost a year ago. The moment Truebit ($TRU) “rugged”. Some Quamrades got involved. Was life any better back then? It was also around the time that Raoul Pal talked about the need for interoperability. We look back and compare it to his answer to Greg's question that was asked last week in a Twitter Space. Raoul knows. The lion's share of the episode focuses on self-sovereign identity (SSID). Lord Quantonian Longhold dropped a thread on Twitter on it and we think it deserved attention. Combined with Overledger, we are once again in the center of the action and we tell you why. Tweet by Tweet. Talking about tweets, we discuss the upcoming new Quant websites and browse through the Twitter activity of last week. We also discuss AUCloud, and if that alone is not enough we answer your questions! The Dutch government says it will no longer fund one of the six major civil society and human rights organisations in Palestine which Israel banned as terrorist groups in October 2021. The Ramallah-based Union of Agricultural Work Committees says this is the first time a government ends its funding for Palestinian civil society based on political conditionality. The group says it would consider legal steps to challenge the Dutch government's harmful and unfair decision which, it warned, was likely to resonate far beyond our organisation.

In this episode I chatted with the lovely Linda Van Gelder the secretary from the Stichting Buitenlandse Asielen (SBA) who are a non profit organisation based in the Netherlands.SBA is a foundation helping other animal shelters all around the world. They provide not only financial help for a guaranteed period of agreed time but they also assist with ways to make the shelters operate better, more efficiently and provide other vital support.Once the shelters are able to cope on their own and no longer need the help of SBA then they go it alone but SBA maintain contact and will lend further support if necessary and encourage the shelters to continue their positive work and are very happy when the shelters become self sufficient as it means they have helped them enough for them to do so.The SBA currently provides financial help and assistance for between 17-22 shelters around the world from places such as Colombia and Costa Rica in Central and South America. In Europe places such as Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Spain, Slovakia and the Torre Argentina Cat Sanctuary in Rome. SBA even help shelters as far away as Asia in Sri Lanka and Thailand.SBA was set up in 1983 by Mrs Diny Brummelman and has a cooperation agreement with the Dutch Government. The organisation relies on donations to keep operating and passes these much needed funds onto the various shelters receiving their support. You can find SBA on Instagram @stichtingbuitenlandseasielen and their new website is being created currently and you can find it when its operational on Stichting Buitenlandse Asielen is under construction but in the meantime check out their old website for more about this fantastic organisation! Julian Wilson began his career at Apple in the late 80s. Here he worked on projects such as the world's first set top box, hybrid CD / internet games console and as part of the team who introduced Newton [arguably the forerunner to the iPhone]. He left Apple to join ATT in 1996, where he conceived and built a digital cash payment service for mobile phones based on smart cards. In 1999 after raising $5m from US venture capitalists and the Dutch Government, Julian led a management buyout of this technology to create SmartAxis BV. After two more Internet start-ups focused on identity and mobile data, Julian joined Barclays engineering team in late 2013, where amongst other things he and a colleague submitted global patents for modification to the bitcoin protocols / blocks of crypto currency. Julian joined Ecospend in 2019 to build a self-sovereign data service on top of an Open Banking platform. He describes his role as putting an Internet lens onto product design. Social relationships with relatives, friends and acquaintances are important resources for the personal functioning of people and offer a unique chance to meet belongingness needs. However, in modern Western societies, meaningful and supportive personal relationships have become less self-evident. Due to societal developments (like individualisation processes) people are less able to fall back on ‘given' bonds such as family or neighbourhood relationships. Especially major life-events can cause loneliness: a divorce, the death of a loved one, retiring, moving, a decreasing health condition, and ageing often have a negative effect on the size or quality of the social network. In her lecture, Anja Machielse explores different aspects of loneliness: the great diversity among lonely persons, the consequences of loneliness for their self-worth and self-respect, and their lack of social support. She also explores the personal competencies and social skills that are necessary to make meaningful contacts; skills that are needed to show vulnerability and to ask for help in times of adversity. Anja Machielse also gives insight into the strategies lonely people use to deal with their situation, and the possibilities they see of changing their situation. She shows that lonely people develop habits and rituals to meet their social needs that often intensify their loneliness. The lecture makes clear that social interventions should fit with the ambitions and strategies of the lonely people involved. Anja MACHIELSE - is Professor of ‘Empowerment of Vulnerable Older Adults'. Her research is focused on persons who are less able to deal with the complexity of daily life. Questions about social vulnerability (loneliness, social isolation), relational involvement and meaningfulness are central in her work. She wrote several books and articles on social contacts, loneliness and social isolation (among others: Social Isolation in Modern Society (New York/London:Routledge). She is a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Dutch Government for the policy to combat loneliness and social isolation. Recorded in Udine 6th July - IFOTES Congress "Leaving loneliness, building relationships"

For more delicious news, go to www.GoodNewsGoodPlanet.com, and scroll to bottom for more ways to find the feel good stuff!* BUS STOP BEES Honey Bees are one of the most important pollinators on the planet. Unfortunately, Honey Bee populations are declining due to human interference on many levels. But there’s a news buzz of hope on the horizon in Europe… In Utrecht, Holland, they’ve taken the declining bee population problem into their own hands or should I say, over their bus stops! The City of Utrecht has planted the roofs of their bus stops with Sedum, as a way to help the honey bee and bumble bee populations. Sedum are bee friendly succulents which are easy to grow and improve air quality. Last year the Dutch Government introduced this Pollinator Strategy in an attempt to revive the bee, butterfly, and other insect populations which are necessary for more than 75% of the country’s edible crops. Not only do the buzzing bus stops aid in recovering the bee population, but they also aid in improving the city environment by capturing fine dust, reducing noise and absorbing carbon. The new roofs also store rainwater, and provide cooling in the summer. The buzzing bus stops are maintained by city workers who go from one stop to the next via electric vehicles. These environmentally friendly hubs have also been equipped with energy efficient LED lights and sustainable bamboo benches. As of late 2019, Utrecht had 10 electric busses in service with a plan to have all their busses emission-free by the year 2028. The city is also encouraging its residents to alter their home roofs to be buzz-worthy and bio-diverse by offering available eco-funding to do so. Utrecht’s long-term plan is to create a more sustainable city, and a model that others can easily replicate. This episode was recorded at the Central European Cannabis Forum where we were joined by Tjalling Erkelens, Co-Founder and CEO of Bedrocan, who are exclusive suppliers of medical cannabis to the Dutch Government. We examine attitudes towards CBD, medical, and recreational cannabis in The Netherlands, alongside discussing the importance of consistency and standardisation of medical cannabis.View full show notes and summary here: https://www.cannabis-conversation.com/blogs/episode68About TjallingTjalling Erkelens is the founder of Bedrocan and currently holds the position of CEO. He started Bedrocan in the Netherlands as a family business, and he maintains these roots as Bedrocan continues to grow. Since 2003 Bedrocan provides standardised cannabis of pharmaceutical quality to the Dutch government. It's the oldest legal company in the world providing several, chemically different cannabis varieties to be used by patients on doctor's prescription and as a raw material for the pharmaceutical industry (API).For the past 20 years, Tjalling has developed and standardised unique methods of producing cannabis to pharmaceutical standards to a level achieved by no other company. His strong commitment to product quality resulted in the Dutch Bedrocan production facilities being approved for GMP (good manufacturing practice) by the Dutch Health Authorities in 2017.It is Erkelens' strong belief that there should be a clear distinction between medicinal and recreational use of cannabis and that patient needs for safe and consistent cannabis is a priority. He is convinced that this can be achieved by going through the official drug approval process. “Fully standardised medicinal cannabis is the foundation on which such approval can be achieved.

Empathy, understanding and compassion. These words are not commonly used in many large organisations. But why? That's what we're going to find out. Our guest in this episode, Maike Klip, has embarked on an inspiring research project to learn what it means to be a compassionate civil servant. As an employeed of the Dutch Government herself Maike recognized the stories about organisations not having enough empathy for the people they serve. So she got curious and wanted to understand how much empathy is enough? And if we're lacking empathy why is that? And maybe even question if we really want organisations to show more empathy... because empathy has it's flaws. If you're sometimes frustrated with the lack of empathy from organisations this episode holds some valuable insights about the dynamics that are at play here. And if you want to open up the conversation about empathy in your own organisation, Maike's design research method will definitely be a great addition to your toolbox. If you enjoyed this episode don't forget to share ir with fellow practitioners who might find it helpful as well. That way you'll help to grow the community and help me to invite more inspiring guests like Maike. Remember. Every. Share. Hiber is a Dutch company that works to provide IoT - Internet of Things - connectivity in remote and rural areas. Only 10% of the world has connectivity right now, says Erik Wienk, Managing Director, which is about 90% of the people. But the remaining 90% of the world needs to use satellite communications technology. IoT is expensive and power-hungry, though, so Hiber has combined terrestrial and satellite communications into a satellite network with the power consumption and cost-saving levels of land-based communications. They have their own satellite network, with two satellites currently in orbit and two more planned.Hiber systems are used in agricultural technology, logistics and supply chain systems, and mining environments. Industry sensors connect to Hiber modems and antennae to transmit data like soil moisture or temperature via satellite. The company hopes to be a solution to the big challenges we have today in situations like food waste, due to poor monitoring of production or transportation. Hiber technology can be used to monitor beehives, 70 million of which are in remote areas, with a mortality rate of 40% in unmonitored areas. With monitoring, mortality rates can be reduced by 10%, with a commensurate positive impact on crops. The company currently has about 70 pilot projects underway, with a major focus on agricultural monitoring and transportation logistics, as well as smart energy. Hiber has been nominated as a National Icon by the Dutch Government and attended CES as part of the Dutch Innovation booth. The experience has provided them with new ways to look at things, like connected beehives, that they might not have fully considered previously. As they solve problems at the edge, and others learn how Hiber solves connectivity issues with 4G and with LoRa (Long Range low power wireless communications technology), and it hopes to become the standard globally. During WWII, Lt. John Low, Jr, was shot down over Occupied Holland. He spent 11 months evading capture due to the selfless efforts of the Dutch Underground. “After a 96 hour war, Holland capitulated to Germany in May of 1940, but while the Dutch Government was forced to lay down its arms in the face of Hitler's mighty armies, the people and underground fought on until they witnessed the defeat of this enemy.”- John Low, Jr Thanks to Swing Republic for the opening music. Duizenden kinderen uit Indonesië vonden hun weg naar Nederland, maar ze waren gewoon gestolen en verkocht. De Nederlandse overheid wist ervan.
