After the success of his novel CARRIE (1974), Stephen King followed up with what some considered a more traditional novel, ‘SALEM’S LOT (1975), based strictly within the most popular horror subgenre of all, vampires. However, unlike the traditional vampire story, he took the DRACULA tale and placed it squarely into a small New England town; basically using PEYTON PLACE (in a sense) as a vampire setting. Ben Mears, an unsuccessful author, heads back to Jerusalem’s Lot, a small town in Maine that he used to spend summers at. As a child, during a dare, he entered an abandoned home of a former Boston Irish mobster. Inside he swore he saw the ghost of hitman Hubie Marsten. Now he wants to write a book on the Marsten House and also face his own “ghosts” from the past. A big success for Stephen King’s sophomore effort, the book was turned into a TV mini-series directed by Tobe Hooper and also once more in the 2004 starring actor Rob Lowe. Ben Mears is a successful writer that has returned to his hometown of Salem's Lot after many years. All to write about a supposedly evil Marsten house that has loomed large in the town since as long as anyone can remember. This house has recently become home to a Vampire named Barlow that unleashes his hunger and plague of vampirism throughout the town. As citizens are slowly turned it's up to Ben and a few survivors to take out Barlow and flee the town. Unless they want to end up one of the many ghouls that now inhabit, Salem's Lot.

This made for TV adaptation was directed by Tobe Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Poltergeist, Life Force) and stars David Soul (Starsky & Hutch, Magnum Force) as young, brooding novelist: Ben Mears. Ben returns to a town from his youth, only to find that it is riddled with vampires! This marks the film debut of the iconic, Mr. Barlow, whose visage you've likely seen on a crusty punk's leather jacket sometime in your life. 'Salem's Lot marks King's second novel, following his seemingly overnight success with Carrie. Fred Willard (Anchor Man, Best in Show) somewhat steals the show as Mr. Crockett in his silky shorts, while James Mason (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Lolita, North by Northwest) plays Mr. Barlow's familiar: Mr. Straker. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. The derivative vampire novel in the modern era (assuming the modern era is the last 50 years) is none other than Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot. The novel was the second by the author, released in 1975, and became an instant best seller with its tale of an evil rooted in a small town that turns out to be more corporeal rather than figurative. Struggling author Ben Mears returns to the town of his childhood to begin research on a new novel based off the Marsten House which sits upon a hill above the town. During his return, an antiques shop opens by two men named Barlow and Straker. When there is a disappearance of a young boy, the three new comers are looked upon as possible suspects by the local constable. Soon a group of residents ban together when certain pieces to the puzzle lead to an underlying evil. In 1979, Tobe Hooper’s adaption of the novel, was made into the “movie-of-the-week” mini-series on television. The screenplay was written by Paul Monash, who’s work on Peyton Place and small town New England, seemed to be a brilliant choice.
