Haunted History Chronicles
Supernatural Justice: Ghostly Encounters in Legal History With Richard Sugg

Haunted History Chronicles

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 22, 2023 111:05

In the realm of the unexplained, the boundary between the supernatural and the legal is often blurred, giving rise to extraordinary tales where ghosts, spirits, and mysterious occurrences intersect with the principles of justice and suspicion. In this episode overview, we delve into captivating cases and historical accounts where spectral entities become witnesses, suspects, or even instruments of judgment in courtrooms across centuries. Join us on a journey through the eerie corridors of the law, where the paranormal meets jurisprudence, and where the line between the tangible and the ethereal is tested like never before. My Special Guest is Richard Sugg Richard Sugg is the author of thirteen books, including John Donne (Palgrave, 2007); Mummies, Cannibals and Vampires (Turkish trans 2018; 3rd edn 2020); A Century of Supernatural Stories (2015); Fairies: A Dangerous History (Reaktion, 2018; Japanese trans 2022); The Real Vampires (Amberley, 2019); and Bloodlust (2020). He lectured in English and History at the universities of Cardiff and Durham (2001-2017), and his work has appeared in The Guardian, The Sun, the Daily Telegraph, Daily Mail, BBC History, the New Yorker, and Der Spiegel, as well as on international television. Cruentation Cruentation, or "ius cruentationis," traces its origins back to Germanic law systems in the medieval period. From its inception, this method of finding proof against a suspected murderer spread like a shadow across Germany, Poland, Bohemia, Scotland, and even European colonies in North America. It was one of several mystical ordeals used as tangible evidence, reflecting the superstitious nature of justice during that historical period. Cruentation, a belief held from the 1100s to the early 1800s, was a curious and outdated legal concept in which a corpse's bleeding was considered evidence of guilt in murder trials. This belief held that when a suspected murderer came into the proximity of a deceased person, the wounds on the corpse would spontaneously bleed, as if the blood itself was accusing the perpetrator. However, this notion contradicted scientific understanding, as blood typically clots and thickens shortly after death. Its eerie influence persisted in Germany until the middle of the 18th century. Ghosts, The Supernatural And The Law The William Edden murder case of summer 1829 is a remarkable chapter in legal history, marked by an eerie blend of superstition and justice. After William Edden's murder, his wife testified to encountering his ghost, a spectral appearance that would play a crucial role in the trial of Benjamin Tyler and Solomen Sewell, the accused murderers. In a macabre attempt to determine Tyler's guilt or innocence, Edden's widow permitted Tyler to touch her deceased husband's corpse, believing that the ghostly retribution would manifest if he were the true culprit. This case highlights the extent to which supernatural beliefs once influenced legal proceedings, showcasing an era where the boundary between the material and the spectral was blurred in the quest for justice. In this episode, you will be able to: 1. Uncover cases involving the police and courts where ghosts and the supernatural intertwine. 2. Explore the practice of 'cruentation:' the trial by touch. 3. Examine the question of ghosts and the law itself including rulings and precedents set. In this week's episode of the Resistance Library podcast, Molly interviews Ammo.com's Sam Jacobs about Benjamin Tyler Henry, the Henry rifle, and how this innovative design transformed the arms industry. While Henry doesn't have the same household recognition as Sam Colt or Smith & Wesson, Benjamin Tyler Henry is a towering figure in the world of ammunition and firearms – and those in the know, know. Henry invented the eponymous Henry rifle, which was the world's first repeating revolver that actually worked. Henry was born in Claremont, New Hampshire in 1821, to one of the most prominent families in the area. His grandfather, Colonel Benjamin Tyler, had been the town's first millwright, who founded several successful mills in the town and invented the wry-fly water wheel. One of his cousins, James Tyler, likewise continued in the innovative spirit of their shared grandfather by perfecting this water-wheel design, creating much of the prosperity that visited the town during the early years of the Industrial Revolution, but allowing paper and textile mills to spring up throughout the town using the power of this perfected design. At a young age, he became an apprentice gunsmith, working his way up to the foreman at Robins & Lawrence Arms Company of Windsor, Vermont. It was here that he worked with Horace Smith and Daniel B. Wesson on the volitional repeater, which would eventually become the Henry rifle. Sam explains what made Henry's repeating mechanism so disruptive and the two discuss the role it played in the Civil War. Sam talks about Henry's complicated partnerships with other firearm greats, including Smith, Wesson, and Winchester. To learn more about Henry, read Sam's article at Ammo.com's Resistance Library. Welcome to Episode 63 of the No Quit Living Podcast. NQL is a personal development podcast designed to help listeners achieve their goals and desires. Through hearing the inspiring stories and tips from the greats, we will all find it easier to stay motivated and never quit. Benjamin Tyler brought it in today's episode. We at No Quit Living are incredible believers of the power and importance of authenticity, so it was only right that we made that today's theme. In this episode, Benjamin tells us about how he worked a job that he hated for nine years in an effort to please his parents, but he knew there was ultimately an expiration date before he had to fulfill his personal need to be great. After quitting that job, he moved back in with his parents and began working on his business. After some months, his parents sat him down and told him he'd have to move out. Benjamin respected their decision to do so and it forced him to turn his business profitable. Some months later, he was able to make his first six figure income from it with the help of an amazing coach/ mentor. Benjamin struggled a lot in his twenties and younger years before realizing that "You don't get what you want in life, you get who you are." Click To Tweet Show  Notes: If there's an exception to every rule, is there an exception to that rule? I have no clue, you've already stomped me. Tell us about your upbringing? A defining moment in my life, I was 12 years old and I sat my mother down and just bawling and pleading for her to show me some sort of affection. She was obsessed with making my sister the Prom Queen by giving my sister the life that she never had and she didn't have a lot of time to pay attention to me and when she didn't do that after I asked for love and affection, I told myself I would never be hurt again. That led me into a place where I became a perfectionist; I was a high achiever. I also closed myself off emotionally. The soul needs a companion, for me that was drugs and alcohol and gambling. I started taking ecstasy and cocaine by the time I was 16 years old. How did you make the transition from where you were to where you are now? From the point I was showering with the garden hose to where I finally said enough; I wanted to change my life and I finally took responsibility, I quickly excelled. Fast forward 2 years, I'm living in New York City, I've got a 6-figure job, stature, going places in my career; I'm living the Bachelor life in New York, dating 3 different women. My ego was higher than it ever was when I was on drugs. One day I was sitting on the subway coming home after a long day and thought, 'why am I still unhappy?" It was at that point I realized that I always wanted to share my voice to impact people with my message, speak and allow people to stand in their own greatness and feel like they are good enough to have what they wanted.  When I went off to New York, starting my personal development brand, I started as a Life Coach. I would get blank stares when I said that. I tried to lead with how great my life was and that I had all my stuff together but it wasn't working and nobody wanted it. One day out of frustration I said, I'm going to go to this networking event and share my story. I walked in and shared my issues with addiction and how I overcame them. I'm successful in my career but more importantly, I wanted other people to feel like they are good enough to have what they wanted in their life.  All of a sudden people were interested in what I was doing and I wasn't just a life coach. I realized this is what people wanted from me and I founded the Client Enrollment Academy and I still lead with my story as I find that's what people need these days. You go on Facebook and everyone is tooting their own horn but people really care about not just the solution but who we are buying from. More people need to share the core of who they are not just in their struggles but in their greatness too. How do you think we got there, thinking we have to put up a facade to get people to buy from us and why is our story so important? I've gotten trapped into the 'fake it till you make it'. A lot of the time when we take someone else's mission, it's not authentic to us because it is not who we are as a person. I did that when I started Client Enrollment Academy but it wasn't working for my. My messaging is that we have a story and we want to impact the world, the money will come but that's not the root of what I want to do. I want to share the message of my story instead of what everybody else is saying. Our story is important because the decisions we make in this world are emotional. Our buying decision is emotional. Ninety percent of our buying decision is done emotionally.
