The predominant focus of mindfulness-based approaches to date has been supporting individuals to manage challenging situations, so that negative emotions do not escalate out of control and skilful life choices can be made. There is now increasing interest in using mindfulness techniques to also help individuals make the most of life opportunities, so that positive emotions and broader wellbeing (pleasure, meaning and social connection) can be enhanced. This talk introduces ways mindfulness-based treatments are being adapted to also build positive emotions and wellbeing, including how they are translating findings from basic science and other treatment approaches. The talk was delivered by Barney Dunn and Megan Colletta from the Mood Disorders Centre, University of Exeter (which runs a clinic and range of research trials of mindfulness and other approaches that aim to build wellbeing in clinical populations). It was free to access live to everyone with a general interest in this topic.

How can feeling bad about porn addiction make you more likely to seek it out?Do you ever wonder how you could possibly want to stop watching porn so bad, yet the worse you feel about it the more you seem to “want” it? Does it seem strange that you could feel so negative about something, and yet crave the heck out of it at the same time? You think, “there must be something wrong with me. Otherwise, I wouldn't go back over and over again to this thing I can't stand.”Your pornography addiction continues to take things from you. It hurts you and those around you. Yet, the desire for it just doesn't seem to go away. You think “If I just feel bad enough about it, then I'll stop.”Want to know something? That is the opposite of the truth. In today's episode, I will teach you about the psychology behind all of thisI'll explain how the worse you feel about something the more likely you actually are to do it, and I'll show you how to transform your mindset and mental habits so you can overcome pornography for good. In today's episode, I'll teach you 5 reasons why we go back to addictions that we feel bad about, and how our negative feelings actually drive our addiction. I'll also give you 4 simple-to-do, practical solutions to overcome these negative feelings, and start fueling long-lasting recovery so you can quit porn. How can the teachings of the Stoics help us overcome porn addiction? Stoicism is a moral philosophy for how to live a good life. Sometimes we make the mistake of believing stoicism is all about being serious and having no emotion. Being “stoic”, right? This has little to do with what Stoicism actually is. We also make the assumption that stoicism, as a philosophy, is irreligious. But this is not the case. If you're not familiar with the Stoics, they were philosophers during the age of the Roman Empire. They believed that by observing and being aware of thoughts and emotions, and acting according to reason, we can discontinue allowing earthly passions to rule us, and become masters over our minds, committing ourselves to a life of service to our fellow men. In essence, we could describe pornography addiction recovery this same way: To become an observer of our thoughts and emotions, to master our mind, and to have a life of meaning and service replace the draw of worldly pleasures. Today, we're going to focus on some teachings from my man, Marcus Aurelius, one of the original stoics, and the Roman Emperor from 161 to 180 A.D. If you haven't read Marcus Aurelius' journal - The Meditations - I highly recommend it. That's where I've pulled today's teachings from. I hope they help you stop watching porn and get sober for both yourself and family. When we are caught up in addiction, we can feel like a slave to our body's earthly passions. Marcus Aurelius taught men to live a life founded on serving - which is in essence the opposite of addiction. Addiction is focused on self; recovery is focused on others and God. Not that addicts are selfish, but just that we may have some bad habits of focusing on ourselves too much, which fuels our addiction to porn. When in porn recovery, we are working to replace some of our self-centered habits with ‘others-centered' and God-centered habits. I'm constantly working on this everyday myself, and need reminders all the time. Hope these teachings help you quit porn, my friend. In today's episode, we delve into the transformative power of mindset with our esteemed guest, Ben Spangl. As an experienced mindset and performance coach, Ben provides a wealth of knowledge on embracing a growth mindset, seizing opportunities, and utilizing tools such as visualization and meditation to conquer fears and doubts. He emphasizes the potency of mindfulness in reprogramming limiting beliefs and transcending challenges. This episode is brimming with practical strategies from Ben, aimed at liberating you from restrictive thought patterns and guiding you towards your ideal future. For anyone seeking to learn from a top-tier coach who truly embodies his teachings, this episode is a must-listen! Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Embracing abundance as opportunities How to disconnect yourself from the fear of rejection Unlocking the power of the subconscious The power of meditation Overcoming crises and reaching new heights The power of meditation Episode Highlights: [06:53] Embracing Abundance as Opportunities Everyone aspires for a life filled with abundance, often equated with financial wealth. However, true abundance extends far beyond monetary riches. It encapsulates a rich life teeming with abundant health, relationships, lifestyle, spiritual fulfillment and yes, financial wealth too. This concept aligns with various beliefs, referred to as the 'field' in science or God, source, and the universe in different ideologies. There's a fundamental intelligence guiding life that can deliver our desires. However, it's crucial to remember that navigating the path to our goals doesn't require us to decipher every intricate detail. Fixating on a rigid step-by-step plan could blind us to potential opportunities. Therefore, maintaining an open mindset is key to embracing the abundant life we yearn for. [19:47] How to Disconnect Yourself From the Fear of Rejection One of the ways Ben worked to disconnect from the fear of rejection was through systematically desensitizing himself to it over time. He references the concept of systematic desensitization taught by Steve Siebold, which involves gradually exposing yourself to what you fear in a controlled way to lessen its impact. In sales, Ben faced rejection repeatedly by putting himself out there more and more, which helped him realize he could withstand it. This process of facing rejection bit by bit through his actions and experiences helped reprogram his mindset around it by showing him rejection was not as threatening as he once thought. It became something he could better handle and not take as personally. [24:24] Reprogramming the Mind: Unlocking the Power of Your Subconscious We're all programmed in various ways, with our brain functioning as a supercomputer. The term 'garbage in, garbage out' not only applies to computing but also to our lives. If we consistently generate undesirable outcomes, like financial struggles, it's not our fault but an issue with our mental programming. We harbor unworkable beliefs that shape our behaviors and affect what we attract in life. Understanding this, the key lies in learning how to rewrite these programs at a deep, unconscious level. The subconscious mind, which constitutes 95% of our personality, dictates our thoughts, actions, feelings and even our biological functions. In contrast, our conscious mind accounts for a mere 5%. Despite knowing consciously what we should do to improve our health or increase our wealth, we often don't act on it. This discrepancy arises when our conscious desires haven't permeated our subconscious, leading to a mismatch. In such cases, the emotional, subconscious mind invariably triumphs. HelloWelcome to Life Points with Ronda, the podcast that helps you navigate life's challenges with practical wisdom and actionable advice. where we discuss important topics that affect our everyday lives. Today, I'm speaking to the Gentleman and Gentleman our topic for today is: Pushing Past the Limits: Using Mindfulness to Control Obsessive BehaviorObsessive behavior can be detrimental to our personal and professional lives, and more so in romantic relationships. It can lead to controlling behavior, excessive jealousy, and an unhealthy emotional dependency. It's not a representation of love or care; instead, it's a reflection of our insecurities and an inability to manage emotions effectively. However, every cloud has a silver lining, and for this, mindfulness offers a promising solution.Mindfulness, at its core, is the ability to be fully present and engaged in the moment, aware of our thoughts and feelings without distraction or judgment. It's a powerful tool that can help us manage obsessive thoughts and behaviors, offering a path to healthier interactions and better relationships.**Understanding Obsessive Behavior**Obsessive behavior often stems from an intense fear of loss or rejection, which leads to actions that are out of proportion with reality. This might manifest as constant checking up on a partner, excessive worry about their activities, or an unhealthy need for reassurance. Understanding this is the first step towards change. Being self-aware helps in identifying and acknowledging the irrationality of such behavior, setting the stage for transformation.**The Role of Mindfulness**Mindfulness teaches us to observe our thoughts and feelings without getting entangled in them. This observational perspective allows us to recognize obsessive thoughts as they arise and not react impulsively. Through mindfulness, we learn to pause, take a step back, and look at the bigger picture. We can reflect on the consequences of our actions and make better decisions. **Practicing Mindfulness**1. **Mindful Breathing:** This is a simple yet effective way to begin your mindfulness journey. Take a few minutes each day to focus purely on your breathing. If your mind wanders (as it inevitably will), gently bring it back to your breath. This practice can help you develop the ability to refocus your attention, which is crucial in managing obsessive thoughts.2. **Mindful Observation:** Choose an object, sound, or sensation and spend a few minutes focusing on it. Notice its details. This can help you learn to redirect your attention away from obsessive thoughts and towards your present environment.3. **Mindful Listening:** Practice active listening, paying full attention to the other person without judgment or planning your response. This can improve your communication skills and help make your interactions more meaningful and less dominated by obsessive worries or thoughts.**Mindfulness in Relationships**In relationships, mindfulness can be a game-changer. Mindfully listening to your partner allows for better understanding and empathy. It fosters open communication and reduces the likelihood of misunderstandings. Being mindful of your own feelings helps in expressing them healthily without resorting to controlling or obsessive behavior. You've probably heard that mindfulness helps with addiction - being present, enjoying the moment, getting in tune with your senses. But you've probably found it difficult to implement mindfulness in your daily life, and fail to see how using mindfulness to overcome addiction really works. I get that.Today, I'm going to talk about discoveries that I've made about mindfulness for recovery, as well as some universal practices that I've seen work for others. Before we get started, it's important to understand that the way I teach porn addiction recovery has little to nothing to do with stopping the behavior itself. To quit porn, we focus not so much on stopping the addictive behavior as much as being good at a sport is about being fast. Being fast is certainly helpful, but if you don't have the techniques, the practice, the mindset, it's not going to get you very far. Recovery is not about sobriety. It's not about the number of days not acting out. It's a way of life. It's about your mental state, spiritual state, and physical state. Most of all it's about your relationship with God, your Savior, and those around you - is your focus on self? Or is it on God and others? Mindfulness is part of this. It is a mindset, a way of life. Most of all it is an awareness. There are differing mindfulness practices for addiction recovery, but here's how I see it - the best way I can sum it up: Mindfulness is about being deeply accepting of your emotions, and remaining in the present moment. That's it. How does this help with recovery? What I teach my clients is that addiction is a mindset of resistance and control… And recovery is a mindset of surrender and acceptance. Sounds counterintuitive, right? But this goes back to Buddhist teachings, Taoist teachings, it's at the core of 12-step. In order to recover, I need to stop resisting those difficult emotions that I'd rather not feel. I need to begin accepting myself as imperfect, accepting others as imperfect, and accept that life is never going to be the easy, effortless thing that my addict brain wishes it was. It's always going to entail suffering - that's what the Buddha taught “life is suffering”. But then, he also said that we transcend that suffering by releasing our resistance to it. It doesn't mean I won't suffer, rather that suffering will no longer control me when I discontinue my attempts to escape from it. It will be far less intense when I embrace it, surrender to it. Last night I woke enraged. At the world. At my family. At my job. At myself. I was lying in bed in a state of utter tension; with a headache, racing heart, and complete emotional overwhelm. Then, a moment of detachment. A breath. A reminder of my mindfulness practice and the realisation of two fundamental truths of my current predicament.1: All of my pain was coming from inside of me. In that moment there was no external forces that was ‘causing' my pain.2: I know from experience that thoughts come and go, and that mindful observation facilitates this process.Holding those two truths in mind, I decided to mindfully observe my mind and almost immediately the thought dissipated…How to practice mindfulness resources:Blog PostMindfulness: A Guidebook To The Present Moment - Book Audio Courses & Guided meditations: Insight TimerVideo courses: Skillshare and Udemy. Steps for Using Mindfulness to Manage Your AngerYou've probably heard about mindfulness. You may even have a regular mindfulness practice that you follow. But did you know you can use mindfulness to help manage your anger? Mindfulness experts have identified several key steps you can take to control and manage your negative emotions. 1. Observe your body's signals When you're angry, your body sends out all sorts of messages from rapid heartbeat to clenched jaw, stomach, and hand muscles. Your breathing may become light and shallow. You're ready to fight or fight. 2. Use your breath Breathe into your body's anger reactions. Close your eyes, focus on the breath going right down into your belly and out again. Count as many breaths as you need to defuse your anger. 3. Connect with your body Stay aware of how your body is feeling. Scan your body to see how the anger reactions are manifesting and subsiding. What does your anger feel like? Don't judge, just observe and be kind to yourself. 4. Look at your mind monkeys When you're angry dozens of little mad monkey thoughts are running around your brain like naughty kids yelling things like “It's not fair,” “It's not my fault,” even curse words. Notice your angry self-talk and how it runs in circles. Try to detach from the thoughts if you can. 5. Step away Separate yourself from the thoughts, feelings, and bodily reactions of anger. They are reactions, they are not you. 6. Reach out Once you have detached from your reactions, you can communicate with the person you're angry with. Keep the focus on how you feel, make “I” statements, and avoid blaming. Stay calm and keep your voice low-pitched. Keep your awareness on your reactions in case the anger rises up again. 7. Mindful thinking It's easy for the negative mind monkeys to start chattering away again. Look out for some of the more common thought patterns that feed anger and victimhood. The words ‘never' and ‘always' are red flags for anger monkey activity as are blaming statements (it's your fault, why don't you listen) and gaslighting. 8. Acknowledge the emotion Don't try to deny or squash down your anger. It's a legitimate emotion and in some circumstances, can be a powerful tool against injustice and achieving change. But it is an emotion, it's not you. Anger, like other feeling states, will come and go, and you can choose how you want to deal with it. https://5minutesofpeace.captivate.fm (5 Minutes of Peace website) Copyright 2022 ThePeaceRoom.love
