I decided to take a little different approach in this episode of “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast. As many of my listeners know, I started my podcasting journey in 2012, with my very first episode officially being released on January 28, 2013. The show was called, “Stepping Up to the Plate.” It told the stories of Berkshire Baseball and BIG Vision Foundation, the nonprofit youth sports organization that I founded and ran for 30 years of my life before Sandy and I started this new chapter of traveling full-time in our RV. The show ran for 267 episodes, with the final farewell episode airing on January 28, 2020. About a month later, on February 25, 2020, I released the premier episode of the “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast. During my Stepping Up to the Plate days, I was blessed with the opportunity to interview some amazing people. Some of our amazing alumni, staff and sponsors, but also some former MLB players, MVP's, World Series champions, All-Stars as well as former Olympic softball gold medalists and a women's world cup champion in soccer. Today I want to focus on that one women's world cup champion in soccer, who I was not only blessed to interview twice, but also work by her side organizing and running soccer camps for a short time. Ali Krieger recently retired from a long and storied career in women's soccer. At the International level, she was an Olympian and two-time Women's World Cup Champion, who earned 108 caps on USWNT. At the club level, she played in Germany and Sweden as well a in the United States in both the W-League and the NWSL. She played for the Washington Spirit, Orlando Pride and NJ/NY Gotham FC in the NWSL. However, the Ali Krieger that I came to know was so much more than just an incredibly talented soccer player. She was one of the most humble and genuine human beings that I ever met. She has a strong desire to use her platform to be a positive role model and give back to the next generation. So, with that being said, I wanted to share with the listeners of the Journey of My Mother's Son, the two interviews that I had conducted with Ali during my Stepping Up to the Plate days with BIG Vision Foundation. Whether you're a soccer fan or not, I am sure that you are going to find great value and inspiration in my conversations with Ali. I hope to have her as a true guest on this show someday soon now that her playing career has come to an end. I wish Ali nothing but the best in her future endeavors. To find out more about Ali, check out her website at https://www.alikrieger.com/.

I AM AN AUTHOR AND A SPEAKER. I founded and ran a nonprofit youth sports organization for 30 years called the Berkshire Baseball & Softball Club, which later became the BIG Vision Foundation. We ran teams, tournaments and a 130 acre sports complex. I loved every second of what I did. I loved working with kids and teaching them leadership skills and life lessons through sports and community service. I thought that I would have died doing what I loved. Then in 2019, I felt a calling from God for my wife, Sandy, and I. We decided to leave our comfort zone and start a new journey. A literal journey, selling most of our material things and setting out across this beautiful country in an RV with our golden retriever, Youkilis. Sounds crazy, but it was also destined to happen. You see I was raised by a hippy named Loretta Magary, she was a free spirit who quit her job and embarked on her own journey in the mid-1980's. Her journey started in a 1967 Plymouth Valiant with the back seat removed to make a bed and a .38 Special for protection and later evolved into a 1978 Toyota camper. After she passed away in 2005, we were able to experience a small part of her journey by going through her old photos and letters. The people that she met along the way were amazing. I'll be conducting speaking engagements and writing more books on our travels. More importantly, this is our chance to continue my mother's legacy of giving back through volunteering. We will tell the stories of the people that we meet along the way. This is truly “The Journey of My Mother's Son” and as Michael Franti says in the opening verse of his song, “Gloria,” “When many little people in many little places, Do many little things, then the whole world changes.” It will be our job to share and tell the stories of those “Many Little People” through this podcast and my writing. Some of the people that we interview may be famous, most will not be, but they'll all have a story to tell about the difference they're making. Some stories will still have a sports theme, others spiritual, some will be about music, others about food, some will talk about travel, but all will be about the many little people, in the many little places who are doing the many little things to make the whole world change. We pray that you enjoy these stories and are inspired to do your own little things to make this world a better place for all of us. Our guest today on the Outdoor Adventure Serie is Dan Clouser.Dan is an Author, Blogger, Podcast Host, Speaker, and Consultant. After running the Berkshire Baseball & Softball Club, a nonprofit youth sports organization he founded over 30 years ago, In 2019, Dan, his wife Sandy, and their faithful golden retriever, Youkilis, tackle RV life as they travel across the country. Dan shares that the travels are missions in many ways: honoring the legacy left by Dan's mother, volunteering and serving others, cherishing friends and family, having faith, and just living in the moment.Aha MomentThe many times I have had the opportunity to reconnect with my former players since we've been traveling full-time have shown me the fruit of my labor. To see the young men and women who I have coached make positive impacts in the world has been an incredible experience for me.Insight2GoThis is always my "go-to" quote - "A life isn't significant except for its impact on other lives." ~Jackie Robinson. I can easily expand on why that quote means so much to me.To learn more about Dan, subscribe to The Journey of My Mother's Son Podcast, or listen to other podcasts that he has been a guest on, visit his website at https://journeyofmymothersson.com.You can also learn more about Dan on these social sites:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheBeautyOfADiamond/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/danclouser5/The Outdoor Adventure Series is a podcast production of Fox Coaching, Inc.
In this episode of “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast, I sit down to talk with Mike Latona. Another one of my former players, Mike Latona is now a Quality Engineer. Just like last week's guest, Collin Fesi, we were able to reconnect with Mike in Maryland. What a blessing that night was to not just see one of my former players, but two in the same night. Mike and Collin played for our organization a few years apart, but it was neat to see how they connected immediately knowing that they had that Berkshire Baseball experience in common. I hope that they stay in contact now that they know each other. I always say that when we reconnect with my former players on this journey, it truly does fill my heart with joy. To see these kids now and witness how they've grown into productive members of our society and just quality humans overall is incredibly special for me. Mike reflects on his playing days within the Berkshire organization and how it impacted him socially to meet and play with players from outside of his school district. We also talk about how those life lessons on the field continue to help him today in his career and beyond.
In this episode of “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast, I sit down to talk with another one of my former players, Dustin Ford. Dustin played for me when he was 14, 15, and 16 years old and played a total of five years in the Berkshire Baseball organization. We were able to reconnect in Prescott Valley, Arizona, where he now resides with his fiancée, Jess. We shared a lot of great memories about his time on the field. More importantly, Dustin talked about how the life lessons that he learned on the baseball field as a teenager have continued to help him throughout his life and professional career. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, reconnecting with my old players has been the most fulfilling part of this journey for me. So, to be able to see two of them in less than a week while we were out in Arizona, completely filled my heart with joy. I am so proud of what these guys have accomplished in their lives and feel blessed to be able to share their stories through this podcasting platform that I now have.
In this episode of “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast, I sit down to talk with Isaac Wenrich. This is the second time that Isaac has been on my show, but his first time on by himself. A little over a year ago, he was on with his former teammate, Stacy Piagno. Stacy and Isaac were battery mates for the Sonoma Stompers and made history on July 15, 2017 when Stacy became the first women since the 1950's to record a win in a professional baseball game. Isaac played for me in the Berkshire Baseball organization when he was 15 and 16 years old. He spent a total of five years in the Berkshire organization and came back as a guest speaker at the Berkshire Baseball and Softball Awards banquet in 2017. We talk about his experience in the Berkshire organization and the impact that the organization had on his life both on and off of the baseball field. One of the best things that Sandy and I have been able to do on this journey is reconnect to old friends and family. However, when those connections are with my former players, I must admit, they are extremely special for me. It shows me how the ripple effect of a lifetime of service is still going strong after so many years.
In this week's episode of The Journey of My Mother's Son, I talked to Stacy Piagno and Isaac Wenrich who made history on July 15, 2017 when Piagno recorded a win against the Pittsburg Diamonds in her first start of the 2017 season. In doing so, she became only the third woman since the 1950s to win a game in an American men's professional league. Wenrich, who is a former player of mine from my Berkshire Baseball days, was her catcher that day. The two share memories of that day and the season in general. Stacy talks about how important it was for the men in the Sonoma clubhouse to simply accept her and her female teammate, Kelsie Whitmore as nothing more than teammates and fellow ballplayers. Isaac talks about how having the women on the team pushed him to push himself and work even harder to improve his own skills.

Dan Clouser once again speaks with Missy Lamm, who along with Kelsey Adams became the first two females to coach a boys Berkshire Baseball team this past summer in the 29 year history of the organization. Missy speaks about the differences between coaching boys and girls as well as earning the respect of the young men that she was coaching. For whatever reason, throughout the history of baseball, the sport has always been male dominated from top to bottom. Dan Clouser, who continues to be influenced by his late mother, views all people as human beings and felt that Missy and Kelsey were simply qualified for the job regardless of their gender. Without intention, BIG Vision Foundation once again found themselves on the cutting edge of youth sports.

Dan sits down with 18U Berkshire Red Sox player, Juan Cubilete at the BIG Vision Sports Complex and talks about his introduction to the sport and his love for the game. He’s currently a sophomore student at Millersville University and is majoring in Accounting, but he still finds time for baseball. He talks about the opportunities that playing at the complex has allowed him and his team. One of the benefits was his chance to train to be an umpire for our tournaments. Juan now has a new perspective and appreciation for the job of an umpire. We are happy that Juan is part of the Berkshire Baseball and Softball Club family.

He now lives in Washington State with his wife and 2 kids and hopes his children once love the game as much as him. Greg talks about his time playing with Berkshire Baseball, his impression of the BIG Vision Sports Complex, and what he’s up to now. Listen to them share some great stories and what his life lessons were from baseball.

Last week Toni Reece spoke to Dan Clouser and Jorge Gonzalez about the new Work Hard, Play Hard program which eliminates registration fees for players but requires them to provide community service in order to participate in the Berkshire Baseball and Softball Club programming within the BIG Vision Foundation. This week, Dan Clouser sits down with Erron Archie, a former player and coach in the Berkshire program who very possibly could be considered the pilot program for what is happening in the Berkshire programs today. Erron, who was raised by a single mother in the inner-city speaks about how the kindness of both Dan and Del Mintz to him as a young man has played a resounding role in who he has become as an adult and parent today.

Toni Reece “pinch hits” again as the guest host to talk to Dan Clouser and Jorge Gonzalez, the founder of the Reading Titans Youth baseball program. BIG Vision Foundation had been helping to underwrite the Titans inner-city baseball program for years and the two organizations have now officially merged under the Berkshire Baseball and Softball Club umbrella of the BIG Vision Foundation. The merger is the culmination of a social experiment that shows how that games of baseball and softball can break down the social barriers that society builds in our differing cultures. Player registration fees have been eliminated and kids are encouraged to give back by participating in various community service projects. It’s not just a game, it’s teaching leadership skills and life lessons through the game.

Dan Clouser tells Zeke the remarkable story of how Berkshire Baseball started on a baseball diamond and metamorphosed into the glittering diamond that is the BIG Vision Foundation. “Berkshire Baseball was born of a love for baseball -- a group of adults who just wanted to continue playing baseball," recounts Clouser, president of the BIG (Berkshire Innovative Growth) Vision Foundation. “Guys who played on a team together and also coached other teams against each other." In so doing, they learned they could touch the lives of young athletes on and off the field. BIG Vision strongly emphasizes good sportsmanship, honesty, loyalty, dignity, humility, class and respect for authority. BIG Vision hosts numerous tournaments at all age levels at its state-of-the-art complex at the Berks County Youth Recreation Facility on County Welfare Road in Leesport as well as various other locations around Berks County. “According to Crystal Seitz, executive director of the Greater Reading Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Big Vision Foundation generates $3 million to $5 million a year in tourism revenue for Berks County," says Clouser.
