When you think of early American writers, what comes to mind? Perhaps the writings or sermons of Puritans. Maybe you think of the Mayflower Compact. But did you know that Anne Bradstreet, an ordinary wife and mother of eight children in New England, was the first published poet on American soil? Join Emma, Grace, and Linus as they interview Dr. Francis Bremer, Professor Emeritus of Church History at Millersville University of Pennsylvania, about this interesting (and often surprising) Colonial woman. Thanks to the generosity of our friends at Reformation Heritage Books, we are excited to offer a bundle of Simonetta Carr's books to two listeners! The winner will be selected just in time for Christmas. Register here to win this special giveaway!   Show Notes: Anne Bradstreet: Christian Biographies for Young Readers by Simonetta Carr: https://reformedresources.org/anne-bradstreet-christian-biographies-for-young-readers-hardcover/   Phillis Wheatley: Christian Biographies for Young Readers by SImonetta Carr: https://reformedresources.org/phillis-wheatley/   Verses upon the Burning of our House, July 10th, 1666 BY ANNE BRADSTREET   In silent night when rest I took, For sorrow near I did not look, I wakened was with thund'ring noise And piteous shrieks of dreadful voice. That fearful sound of “fire” and “fire,” Let no man know is my Desire. I, starting up, the light did spy, And to my God my heart did cry To straighten me in my Distress And not to leave me succourless. Then, coming out, behold a space The flame consume my dwelling place. And when I could no longer look, I blest His name that gave and took, That laid my goods now in the dust. Yea, so it was, and so ‘twas just. It was his own, it was not mine, Far be it that I should repine; He might of all justly bereft But yet sufficient for us left. When by the ruins oft I past My sorrowing eyes aside did cast And here and there the places spy Where oft I sate and long did lie. Here stood that trunk, and there that chest, There lay that store I counted best. My pleasant things in ashes lie And them behold no more shall I. Under thy roof no guest shall sit, Nor at thy Table eat a bit. No pleasant talk shall ‘ere be told Nor things recounted done of old. No Candle e'er shall shine in Thee, Nor bridegroom‘s voice e'er heard shall be. In silence ever shalt thou lie, Adieu, Adieu, all's vanity. Then straight I ‘gin my heart to chide, And did thy wealth on earth abide? Didst fix thy hope on mould'ring dust? The arm of flesh didst make thy trust? Raise up thy thoughts above the sky That dunghill mists away may fly. Thou hast a house on high erect Frameed by that mighty Architect, With glory richly furnished, Stands permanent though this be fled. It‘s purchased and paid for too By Him who hath enough to do. A price so vast as is unknown, Yet by His gift is made thine own; There‘s wealth enough, I need no more, Farewell, my pelf, farewell, my store. The world no longer let me love, My hope and treasure lies above.

Teaching our students how to become flexible and accurate evaluators of information requires teaching them adaptable processes and not static heuristics. Our conventional information literacy teaching and learning tools are simply not up to tackling the life-long, real-world challenges and transferable applications required by today's evolving information landscape.  Information Literacy and Social Media: Empowered Student Engagement with the ACRL Framework (ACRL, 2024) by Michele Santamaria and A. Nicole Pfannenstiel (2024, ACRL) provides librarians and non-librarian practitioners with ways to teach and learn with social media. It addresses how to broadly conceptualize information literacy teaching with social media and allay any student reluctance to using social media for academic purposes. It proposes how to map some of the ACRL threshold concepts onto specific social media platforms, including Facebook, X, Instagram, and TikTok, while providing general guidance for if and when those platforms change. There are eight concrete, cross-disciplinary lesson plans that factor in design, assessment, and student engagement. Finally, the book considers how up-and-coming platforms might empower students to be critical content creators and encourage librarians and faculty to support and create new information literacy initiatives on their campuses. Information Literacy and Social Media demonstrates how to engage students with and through social media platforms and teach them to embrace their role as information creators through engagement with the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. Ethan Poetic '20 was born in Coatesville, Pennsylvania, and moved to Lancaster in the middle of his eighth-grade year. On March 19, 2011, he was seriously injured when a tractor-trailer collided with his vehicle on Lincoln Highway East (Route 30) in Paradise Township in Lancaster County. This moment put his life on pause and forced him to fight a ruptured aorta, internal bleeding, a concussion, a fractured collarbone and a sprained wrist. The accident would also cause a delay in Poetic's pursuit of higher education as his health became his main priority. After a long road of recovery, Poetic was offered a job at the School District of Lancaster after-school sports program and was accepted as a student at Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC). He then went on to attend Millersville University because of their communications department, affordable tuition, safe campus, and for the flexibility that allowed him to work two jobs while taking classes. Poetic was welcomed with open arms at Millersville after transferring from HACC. He got along with the students, staff, professors and public safety personnel. The library became an incredibly useful resource, providing him with access to technology. Poetic's math and writing tutors helped shape his academic career for the better. Although he longed to be more involved on campus, his financial responsibilities took precedence. Poetic graduated from Millersville University with a Bachelor of Science degree in speech communications, with a minor in broadcasting and media. He also holds an associate degree from HACC. Poetic is the only member of his family to graduate twice with a post-secondary degree. He is proud to have been featured on the front page of the LNP Lancaster Newspaper in April of 2021 and on WGAL as an inspirational story in May of 2021. He states that all of his college professors made a positive impact on his life. Specifically, Dr. Theresa Russell-Loretz left an immensely positive influence on Poetic by presenting him with the Department Chair's Special Recognition Award for overcoming adversities and challenges. Poetic says that Millersville University helped him grow as a man and as a leader. “Being around other college students and professors allowed me to see certain areas I needed help with, such as seeking help from both writing and math tutors,” he says. Resources at Millersville helped Poetic to successfully complete two television internships at Lancaster Community TV Channel 66 (LCTV 66). Currently, Poetic is a tutor for Substitute Teacher Services and is in the process of starting his own business of Ethan A. Poetic LLC, which includes keynote speaking, corporate speaking engagements, poetry workshops and serving as a mental health advocate. On June 1st, a moving portrayal will grace the stage—a heartfelt depiction of Hazel Jackson's life, a woman whose resilience and dedication left an unforgettable impact on her community. This play, honoring Jackson's memory, marks the foundation stone of the newly formed Hazel Jackson Foundation, with proceeds supporting its mission of empowerment and assistance. Recalling the beginnings of this endeavor, Cheryl Holland-Jones, Dr. Jackson's daughter and the driving force behind the foundation, reminisces about a journey that commenced with a shared desire for change. Amidst social unrest and a global health crisis, the community found itself reevaluating its values and institutions. The renaming of a local school in Jackson's honor sparked discussions about representation and inclusivity, setting the stage for broader societal reflections. The renaming of Hazel Jackson Middle School was more than symbolic; it embodied the community's commitment to preserving Jackson's legacy. From these conversations emerged the idea of a foundation—a platform to perpetuate Jackson's values through scholarships, lectures, and community programs. At the heart of fundraising efforts lies a stage production chronicling Jackson's extraordinary life—a narrative of resilience, leadership, and advocacy. Through this artistic medium, the foundation seeks to inspire pride and unity, anchoring individuals in Jackson's enduring principles. And, reflecting on her mother's legacy, Cheryl, alongside her daughter Amber, underscores the pivotal role of community involvement in driving change. It was through grassroots activism and collective efforts that the school renaming became a reality—a tribute to Jackson's legacy and her ideals. Dr. Jackson's story epitomizes resilience in adversity. As the first African-American female teacher in the Lancaster school district, she confronted systemic challenges with unwavering resolve. Her nine-year journey symbolizes a steadfast commitment to her vocation. Beyond her pioneering role, Jackson's legacy encompasses a broader cultural and social influence. She paved the way for diversity and inclusion initiatives within the school district, leaving an indelible mark on successive generations. Furthermore, she embodied this commitment as the first African-American Professor at Millersville University. As the stage production unfolds, audiences will witness Jackson's remarkable odyssey—a testament to perseverance and community solidarity. Their support will fuel the foundation's empowerment mission, ensuring Jackson's legacy inspires future generations. Rooted in talent development and community resilience, the Hazel Jackson Foundation's endeavors, from scholarships to cultural events, aim to uplift and empower. Attendees of the play not only honor Jackson's memory but also contribute to initiatives that enrich the community. Ultimately, the production celebrates Jackson's life—a tribute to her enduring legacy and the values she embodied, serving as a poignant reminder of the transformative power of perseverance, leadership, and communal unity.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tavon Parker's life embodies the classic tale of redemption and resilience, evolving from a troubled youth entangled in the pitfalls of street life to an inspirational figure driving positive change in his community. At just 14 years old, Parker displayed early an entrepreneurial spirit by earning money through lawn care services, a venture that saw him purchase a truck and enlist his older siblings for assistance. However, his academic aspirations suffered setbacks, leading to the loss of a scholarship and a return to his hometown of York, following his short stay at Millersville University as a athlete on a scholarship. Rather than succumbing to despair, Parker found himself drawn into the darker allure of the streets, resorting to drug dealing as a means of survival. However, a pivotal moment occurred on February 14, 2017, when Parker was arrested, marking the beginning of a transformative period during which he served a 14-month sentence in a state prison. Determined to break free from the cycle of crime and rebuild his life, Parker emerged from incarceration with renewed purpose and a commitment to his family. Returning to his roots, Parker reignited his passion for entrepreneurship, revitalizing his lawn care business, which blossomed into a full-time endeavor known as Tavon's Lawn Care. Yet, it was a tragic event in early 2020 that propelled Parker towards a higher calling. The senseless loss of his brother, Willie Hicks, in a barbershop robbery served as a catalyst for Parker to channel his experiences into a mission of empowerment and mentorship. Driven by a desire to steer young people away from the perils of street life, Parker founded The Advantage Program, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing opportunities and guidance to at-risk youth in York. Through initiatives such as job placements and educational outings, Parker seeks to broaden horizons and instill hope in communities where despair often reigns supreme. One such initiative saw Parker taking a group of youths on a transformative trip to Philadelphia's historic district, exposing them to experiences beyond their immediate surroundings. Furthermore, Parker's commitment extends beyond geographical boundaries, as he utilizes his platform to speak to youth nationwide, spreading messages of positivity and resilience. Central to Parker's approach is the notion of support and belief in the potential of every individual he encounters. By offering employment opportunities and lending a compassionate ear to the struggles of young people, Parker aims to foster a sense of belonging and purpose, empowering them to realize their inherent greatness. As Parker reflects on his journey, he remains steadfast in his conviction that with the right guidance and support, individuals can transcend their circumstances and achieve greatness. Through his unwavering dedication to uplifting others, Tavon Parker exemplifies the transformative power of resilience and the boundless possibilities that emerge from a commitment to positive change.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The unique model Millersville University is using to reduce student costs

Between 1980 and 2020, the average price of tuition, fees and room and board for an undergraduate degree at colleges and universities in the U.S. increased 169%, according to a recent report from Georgetown University's Center on Education and the Workforce. Since the COVID pandemic, college costs have actually held steady, but the average 2020 price tag of $28,775 has kept some would-be-students from getting a degree – even though most students or their families don't pay the full amount since they get financial aid. The institutions are well aware that the cost to attend is high. Millersville University in Lancaster County is trying something new that will reduce costs for students in several ways, by adopting a "flat tuition price" rather than charging students on a per credit model. On The Spark Tuesday, Millersville University President Dr. Daniel Wubah explained,"The model that we've adopted that's actually on its own has a fee, a flat rate that in the past it basically says universities should be asking students to pay on a semester basis between 12 and 18 credits. So a student in the PASSHE (Pennsylvania System of Higher Education) system currently would typically pay $7,716 per year taken between 12 to 18 credits each semester, meaning they can take up to 26, 30 to 36 credits per year. That is what PASSHE and the Board of Governors have approved under the per credit tuition model. What the universities  then did was and they actually started requiring students to pay based on the number of credits. So if a student, for example was taking 15 credits, it means they will pay an additional three credits beyond the $7,716 that the floor that PASSHE has allowed us to do. So students in most cases had to pay extra for credits beyond 12 credits each semester. And that is how additional revenues were generated. Now, (the) move is back to the 7,716 for students to take between 12 and 18 credits. So for something that is today for credits that student paid this academic year, next year, they can take up to six extra credits without paying any additional funds." Wubah said the university has been reducing expenditures by reducing staff-to-student ratio and examining any staff opening that comes up. Dr. Wubah said the university hopes to know within two years whether the changes adopted have been a success in maintaining revenue and increasing students enrollment.   .Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As winter break approaches, college students are being advised to embrace a season of rest and prioritize mental well-being. KeLonni Dawkins, a rising junior at Millersville University, sheds light on the importance of taking it easy during the break and focusing on mental health. Dawkins emphasizes the significance of self-care, urging fellow students to use the winter break as an opportunity to recharge and destress. With the academic pressures of the semester behind them, students are encouraged to engage in activities that bring joy and relaxation, whether it's spending quality time with loved ones, pursuing hobbies, or simply enjoying moments of solitude. The interview with Dawkins highlights the often-overlooked aspect of mental health, especially during a time when societal expectations may pressure students to be constantly productive. Winter break, Dawkins suggests, should be a time for reflection, rejuvenation, and personal growth. Acknowledging the challenges that the academic year might have presented, Dawkins advocates for students to be kind to themselves and recognize the resilience they've shown. By allowing space for introspection and self-compassion, students can pave the way for a healthier mindset as they approach the upcoming semester. In essence, the message from Dawkins and others resonates as a reminder that winter break is more than a hiatus from classes; it's an opportunity for students to prioritize their mental health, find balance, and return to their academic pursuits with a refreshed perspective. As colleges empty for the break, the focus shifts from assignments to individual well-being, marking a crucial period for self-care and personal reflection.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Pennsylvania hills and valleys like Thailand; Is air as dirty?

Smart Talk

South Central Pennsylvania has some of the worst air pollution in the country. That may come as a surprise to many when they compare a mostly rural area with lots of suburbs and a few small cities to large urban areas throughout the nation. But almost every measurement of air pollution over the last few years ranks the region or individual metropolitan areas like Lancaster and Harrisburg in the top 10 polluted places in the U.S. Faculty and students at Millersville University are measuring and studying air quality in the in region. It's a learning experience for the students but can tell us a lot about the air we breathe. On The Spark Tuesday, Dr. Greg Blumberg, an Assistant Professor of Meteorology in Millersville University's Earth Sciences Department compared Central Pennsylvania's topography with many hills and valleys to Thailand, which has the worst air quality in the world. He added that the air in Central Pennsylvania is nowhere near as bad, but the region's topography is a factor in high levels of air pollution. On the program, Blumberg provided an analogy,"I often like to think about a pot of water or even kind of like waffles. When you're looking at places that have terrain, when you're talking about mountains and valleys, the air pollution can act a lot like syrup, where it just kind of falls down into the the valleys where the little divots are on a waffle. And so the Pennsylvania area has a lot of kind of these different valleys where you can get all that pollution settling down. And one of the things that allows air pollution to kind of intensify is if you're not removing that air. And so if you have stagnant conditions where you don't have very strong winds, the sun's not up allowing some of those pollutants to get mixed, then these are the cases where you might see the air quality really get bad over time. And Pennsylvania kind of has a lot of the ingredients for that right now." There are several interstate and heavily traveled highways in our region and Blumberg indicated the vehicle traffic in Central Pennsylvania is a significant contributor to particle or soot pollution. Keelie Steiner, a senior meteorology major at Millersville studies air quality  and appeared on The Spark. She described how a changing climate could make air pollution worse,"Some of these traffic admissions that we're steadily studying react very well in warmer temperatures. So, for example, ozone, which is something in the stratosphere. So, our ozone layer that protects us from those harsh UV rays coming from the sun. However, once ozone finds its way down the troposphere, that's something you don't want to be inhaling. So, over the wintertime, those cooler temperatures, those ozone levels aren't going to be as high because that ozone, the chemical bonds aren't breaking and reproducing as frequently. However, once you get to the summer with warmer temperatures, it becomes a rapid reproduction of ozone. So now you have large amounts of ozone finding itself down at the surface level that people are breathing in, and that has relation to some respiratory and cardiovascular issues."Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
