Organizations strive to stay true to their mission. The Watauga Land Trust was formed in 1995, established by Appalachian State University students concerned with protecting Howard Knob, a mountain adjacent to the Town of Boone. The new organization raised local awareness about the unprecedented pace of development not just around Boone, but across North Carolina's northwestern mountains. These concerns galvanized the local community and in 1997 the Watauga Land Trust changed its name to High Country Conservancy and expanded its jurisdiction to include Ashe, Avery and Watauga counties. The organization's mission was “to protect the natural resources of Appalachia by conserving land with significant ecological, cultural, recreational, or scenic value in the North Carolina High Country.”In May of 2010, Blue Ridge Rural Land Trust based in West Jefferson, North Carolina and High Country Conservancy, based in Boone merged to create Blue Ridge Conservancy, a private, non-profit organization that has protected over 22,000 acres in Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Mitchell, Watauga, Wilkes and Yancey Counties. In early October 2025, Blue Ridge Conservancy announced after 30 years of effort, it has secured the opportunity to purchase 73 acres on the north and east side of Howard Knob. This property adjoins the existing 5-acre park owned by Watauga County, and will protect the land forever and provide public access for nature-based recreation, including hiking and rock climbing. On this week's Mind Your Business, we speak with Eric Hiegl, BRC's Senior Director of Land Protection and Conservation Planning. We'll hear about how the organization's persistence saw them achieve their founding objective. We'll also discuss BRC's plans to enhance public access to this property in a manner that enhances outdoor recreation opportunities in storied area of Watauga County.Mind Your Business is written and produced weekly by the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce. Thanks to Blue Ridge Conservancy for providing historical context to this story. Doula work often takes us on unexpected paths, and Eva's journey is a perfect example of how growth and change can come full circle. Eva began her career as an independent contractor, supporting families through labor and postpartum. Over time, she became a doula trainer, sharing her knowledge and experience with others entering the profession. Eventually, she joined Angela as a business partner at Tucson Doulas, helping to grow and shape the agency into what it is today. Now, after years of leadership and teaching, Eva has stepped back from training and agency ownership to return to her roots as an independent contractor with Tucson Doulas. Health and life circumstances can shift priorities, and her story is a reminder that evolving in birth work doesn't always mean moving forward; it can also mean coming home. Join us as we talk about Eva's journey, the lessons she's learned along the way, and how embracing change can bring renewed purpose and balance to a doula's career.

ABOUT THE EPISODE:The worst day of Barbara's life came just before spring break of her son's 4th grade year, which he spent in a psychiatric ward. At age 12, he began using marijuana, and the familiar cycle of problems only continued from there – multiple schools, multiple treatment programs, sleepless nights, and ostracization from many of the parents she thought were friends.Barbara had zero experience with substance misuse or addiction, and like many parents, she was suddenly thrown into uncharted territory. The friends who stuck with her naturally talked about the positive life paths their kids were taking. Hearing about the colleges they'd been accepted to and the jobs they'd taken was difficult, and her son felt left behind by his peers as well. The constant stress eventually manifested in Barbara's body as an autoimmune disorder, complicating her life even more.Eventually, she came across a meditation I had recorded years earlier on Insight Timer, and from there, she discovered The Stream Community. In this family story episode, Barbara explains the power of hearing the stories of other parents going through similar experiences, her most effective mantras, and why both she and her son are now helping other parents believe that there is still hope and a path to recovery.EPISODE RESOURCES:InsightTimer meditation - A Gift Of Sleep For Parents Of Addicted ChildrenThis podcast is part of a nonprofit called Hopestream CommunityLearn about The Stream, our private online community for momsFind us on Instagram hereFind us on YouTube hereDownload a free e-book, Worried Sick: A Compassionate Guide For Parents When Your Teen or Young Adult Child Misuses Drugs and AlcoholHopestream Community is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and an Amazon Associate. In the afterglow of the CFP National Championship Game, former Ohio State Buckeye Ben Hartsock joins Y-Option to share his joy, insight and analysis on the best team in the 2024-25 season, as well as answer the question of “What wins?” when it comes to building a team in college football. As the season concluded, both Jim Thornby and I reflect back on Monday night's game, the longest season in the history of college football and debate whether the regular season is becoming devalued.I also play the “What If” game regarding this Ohio State team against some of the greatest teams of the 21st century: Miami in 2001, USC in 2005, LSU in 2019 or Alabama in 2020. Ultimately, we conclude that it's a rather impossible comparison but one that reminds us that college football is in a new era on various levels. Most importantly, we know it's been a long season and we want to say thank you to all of you for the time and dialogue around our guests and college football through the lens of the West Coast.Much love and stay steady,YogiThis episode is executive produced by Jim Thornby & edited by Victor Ren.This podcast is a Best Coast Media productionY-Option: College Football with Yogi Roth is a reader-supported publication. Dale Earnhardt Jr. sits down with NASCAR royalty as Richard and Kyle Petty join this week's episode of the Download. As part of the Petty Family's 75 Years in Racing anniversary celebration, the guys wanted to stop by the studio and share some chapters of their legacy in the sport. The conversation starts with family patriarch Lee, who was entered in the very first NASCAR Cup race held on June 19th, 1949. The family operation steadily grew through the 1950s, with Lee amassing scores of victories along with three championships and Richard joining the driving ranks in 1958. All of this came to a screeching halt though as a result of Lee's harrowing crash at Daytona in 1961, which left Petty Enterprises with virtually nothing. The chat also covers what era of stock cars Richard and Kyle liked driving the most, and what it was like having Earnhardt family patriarch Ralph race for the team in 1957. The guys bring up one of Richard's early run-ins with Dale Earnhardt Sr. at Martinsville in 1980, where the King had to give a young Intimidator a stern talking to. Listeners get some insight into what they can find at the Petty Museum and how the family held on to decades worth of “junk” because of the historic and sentimental value tied to it. They also discuss Kyle's upbringing as a child, him working at the shop and his entry into racing. He explains that his relationship with Richard has come full-circle from the time he was young, and now they are closer than ever. 21+ and present in NC. In this episode, it's finally time to understand the question that I've been dying to know the answer to for so long...what was Markara (my parallel Lyran incarnation) up to in Egypt?? Well now we have the answer, and then some. I'm so thrilled to share this session with you all. We get to finally understand why so many of you have had lifetimes in Egypt as priestesses, in the Black League in Orion as the resistance against the oppressive empire, and in Atlantis as star people during its devolvement. We get to understand what "the first starseed" (from so many previous Atlantis sessions) has to do with it all. We learn how the energetic modality that I'm learning from my future mantis incarnation can be used for quantum/holographic healing, as well as how it was used in civilizations past, specifically in Egypt. We get to understand how to rebel against the suppression of the Divine Feminine. And most importantly, we get to learn how we can come full circle as starseeds on Earth right now to take the power back from those who are committed to stopping the people of Earth from evolving, thus helping to complete the Atlantean karmic cycle on this planet. It's time to awaken our dormant magical gifts that we incarnated with from other lifetimes and use them for the good of all. Huge shoutout to my assistant, Lisa, for leading me through this quantum hypnosis session. To book a session with her, click here. And lastly, I've been advised by The Elders (the mantis council who has been guiding me and so many of you all) to create a new instagram account for those who have the intention of coming along with me on this new and exciting journey we are embarking on. Matt Prosser is one of the most well-rounded talents in the sport of volleyball. An All-American at Long Beach State, Prosser took his size to the beach, where he won an AVP with Matt Olson and enjoyed immense success with John Mayer. In 2018, despite having been only a year out from chemotherapy, Prosser qualified for the Manhattan Beach Open with Eric Beranek, retiring afterwards on his own terms. Now, he's a voice you'll recognize on AVP and Volleyball TV broadcasts as a commentator for the Italian SuperLega, Beach Pro Tour, and numerous AVP tournaments. We chatted about all of that, as well as: How Prosser got hooked on volleyball at the age of 13 What it was like in 2010 when the AVP folded – one week after Prosser made a final in Hermosa Beach How he was able to overcome cancer and make another main draw How a chance encounter with Dustin Watten led to Prosser's favorite career yet: Commentating on beach volleyball And, per usual, a whole lot more.
