My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Patrick Naughton, Jr, author of the book Born from War. Originally from Hawaii, Patrick is a United States (US) Army officer and a Military Historian. He is currently teaching at the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, KS. He received the Army's General Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award in 2012. He has had unique opportunities to serve as an Interagency Fellow with the Department of Labor, a Legislative Liaison to the US Senate, and a Congressional Partnership Program Fellow with the Partnership for a Secure America - all in Washington, D.C. He also served as a Senior Leadership Fellow with the Center for Junior Officers at West Point. He holds a Master of Military Arts and Science degree in History from the US Army Command and General Staff College, where he was an Art of War Scholar. He also holds a Master of Science in Crisis and Emergency Management and a Bachelor of Arts degree in History both from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas where he was an Army ROTC Distinguished Military Graduate. He has published in several venues, but his first book “Born From War: A Soldier's Quest to Understand Vietnam, Iraq, and the Generational Impact of Conflict” was released in April 2025. The views expressed in those publications and this website are his own and not of the Department of the Army, the Department of Defense, or any agency of the US Government. He is forever thankful for the support of his lovely wife, Sheila and their beautiful son, Tommy. In my book review, I stated Born from War is an incredible memoir that looks at the author's time in Iraq compared to his father's time in Vietnam. Despite the decades between the wars and the many differing circumstances, Patrick found astounding similarities. These similarities helped him to understand his father and 'his father's war' in ways he never thought possible. I found it very interesting that without identifiers giving me the what or when, many of the author's recollections could have been swapped with his father's. It makes me wonder if the same would be true for those who fought in WWII or Korea or any modern conflict - and if so, what do we need to learn as a people about war and what it does to soldiers and to civilians living with the consequences. Despite 'lessons learned' from Vietnam, it appears some things do not change. Can they? Should they? And how do we get those in charge to understand what is actually happening on the front lines? I enjoyed this book and feel like I know a bit more about Vietnam, Iraq, and the soldiers who are willing to fight for their country - even when the goals are nebulous. Send us a textGrow to love yourself!I like what Bianca shares. Honesty. She is a licensed Mental Health Counselor and Co-Founder of The Evolve Ventures Podcast and Business. She is also the Director of Therapy for Evolve Ventures Technologies LLC.She speaks to the relationship with self. Growing up in a chaotic home and being a scapegoat led Bianca to pursue this path. She shares that she has Borderline Personality Disorder. She struggled with what may have been "bulimarexia," and we touch on self-harm, abusive relationships, being a rebel, and trying to escape.Bianca shared that body image, and particularly in the Middle Eastern world, is very prevalent, and many women will get plastic surgery to look good for their potential spouse. It's prevalent everywhere. Older women are leaning towards Botox, facelifts, tummy tucks, and so on because it's a societal and social media thing. I loved how brutally honest Bianca was when I told her I was going through some big life changes, some great, but some really bothersome, and she asked me if it triggered my bulimia. It didn't at all. She said I was one of the lucky ones.I wish that luck on everyone who has recovered and will recover. It was there at the beginning... three years or so, but after soon to be 15 years, it's not even a thought to go to when struggles that used to trigger my bulimia even go there.Truth is, Bianca may be right. I may be blessed with not feeling like going back to bulimia at all. Not dieting at all. Just, I guess, one of my go tos is ChatGPT. Sorry, but true. If struggling, I speak to that AI program and ask for a soothing poem, or even if I am wrong in feeling what I do. Wish there was a ChatGPT way back in the 80s. I know it's not a therapist, but when you can't afford one, and you look for some semblance of normalcy in your life, it's my go-to. Not food. However, it took me time to get here, and 30 years of bulimia to know I don't want to go back, that there are better ways.Bianca is a better way if you are still struggling. You need a personal connection. That is how I healed. And the rest is a journey forward to enjoying life and dinners with family without the "human cameras" waiting for you to disappear. To actually enjoy food and company at the same time.I hope you enjoy listening to this as much as I enjoyed being there and interacting with Bianca. You can find her at the link below:https://evolveventurestech.com/evolve-ventures-coaching/therapy-2/On Instagram @evolvewithBiancavia email: bianca@evolveventurestech.comWonderful conversation and loved, as I am repeating myself, honesty.Thank you, Bianca!!BE A GUEST/FIND A GUEST Start for Free!PODMATCH is innovative, provides easy communication and dashboard scheduling! Cultural heritage, a challenging mentor and the bridge between free expression and disciplined practice. Regina Linke is an illustrator and writer dedicated to celebrating traditional Chinese art and philosophy in a modern way. Regina's childhood interest in drawing was initially stifled by rigid instruction, and she went on to study business in college followed by a career in international development. It wasn't until a move to Taiwan, her parents' homeland, that she reconnected with her artistic passion. In Taiwan, Regina immersed herself in traditional Chinese brush painting. Despite an initial struggle with the structured learning environment, she credits her critical teacher with pushing her to develop a unique artistic voice, one that blends her Western upbringing with Eastern aesthetics. This fusion led to the creation of The Oxherd Boy, an online comic that grew from her desire to explain complex philosophical concepts to her young son. Regina discusses the evolution of The Oxherd Boy into published books, and the challenges of adapting her deeply personal work for diverse audiences while staying true to the core message. In this episode Regina offers invaluable advice for aspiring creatives: find joy in the process, but also embrace the discipline of practice and the humility to learn, while illustrating how unexpected paths can lead to profound artistic expression.Key TakeawaysEmbrace structured learning to build foundational skills, even in creative fields, as it deepens your understanding and respect for the art form.A challenging or critical mentor can be instrumental in pushing you beyond your comfort zone to discover your unique artistic voice.Blending diverse cultural backgrounds and perspectives can lead to a richer, more distinctive creative style.Consistent creative practice is essential for growth, even when inspiration wanes; it keeps your skills sharp and fuels further development.Be open to the evolution of your work when collaborating with others, understanding that adaptation can broaden your reach and create new stepping stones for your message.Buy arts and crafts techniques books, plus books by some of my podcast guests, from the Creativity Found bookshop Help me to keep making this podcast at buymeacoffee.com/creativityfoundSupport the showWant to be a guest on Creativity Found? Alex Sanfilippo is a leading voice in the podcasting industry—an entrepreneur, educator, and creator dedicated to helping independent podcasters succeed. He is the founder and CEO of PodMatch.com, the industry-defining platform that intelligently matches podcast hosts and guests for interviews. As the host of the top-rated show Podcasting Made Simple, Alex equips podcasters with practical strategies to grow their influence, streamline their systems, and increase revenue so they can better serve their audiences.Alex's entrepreneurial story began early. At just ten years old, he launched his first business selling used golf balls from his local course—an early hint of the builder, strategist, and problem-solver he would become. By sixteen, he founded a real estate technology company creating virtual home tours, later expanding into real estate investing. But like many young investors entering the 2007–2009 recession, Alex faced substantial financial loss. The setback forced him to close his startup, leave college, and rebuild from the ground up—an experience he now credits as one of the most transformative seasons of his life.Pivoting into the aerospace industry, Alex worked his way from a part-time receiving clerk to an executive within a publicly traded, multi-billion-dollar organization. Over fifteen years, he contributed to major growth initiatives, mergers, and acquisitions. Alongside his corporate career, Alex and his wife, Alecia, built one of the most successful church small group programs in the United States, a framework that continues to be used globally. They also co-founded DailyPS, a multi-author Christian blog and podcast platform that grew to over 130 contributors and became one of the largest of its kind before being acquired in 2021.Despite his success in corporate leadership and ministry, Alex's entrepreneurial drive resurfaced. After several side-hustle attempts and many “failed” experiments, his passion finally found alignment in podcasting—an industry he believed was underserved and full of potential. This led to the creation of PodMatch and the broader suite of tools and education he now offers the podcasting community.Today, Alex Sanfilippo is recognized as one of podcasting's most trusted educators and innovators. Through his software platforms, speaking, and teaching, he empowers creators worldwide to share their message, build meaningful relationships, and scale their impact—one interview at a time.

The chase for status is loud. The quiet work of self-worth is louder. We sit down with midlife self-love coach Jonathan Ashley to unpack how men can build genuine confidence without the scoreboard—by caring for the “emotional six-year-old” inside, stepping into the observer's seat, and practicing non-attachment so expectations stop running the show.Jonathan shares a practical framework: self-love as the bundle of self-worth, self-esteem, self-confidence, self-reliance, and self-discipline, activated through daily reps. We dig into the tools that create emotional scaffolding before life shakes—journaling that names real feelings, meditation and breathwork to calm the nervous system, yoga to connect body and heart, therapy to untie childhood knots, and books that offer language for growth. Along the way, we tackle comparison culture and the myth of the “four sixes,” making the case for moving competition to the court and turning friendship into a refuge for truth. You'll hear how service multiplies “emotional currency,” why vulnerability isn't venting but honest ownership, and how surrender shifts your experience from judgment to peace. With stories, book recs, and hard-won wisdom, Jonathan shows that steady inner worth can survive career swings, breakups, and the internet's highlight reels. The goal isn't perfection; it's presence. Choose one habit today—five minutes of breath, a page of journaling, a call to a friend—and make a deposit into your emotional bank account. If this conversation helps, follow and share it with someone who needs a steadier inner base. #193 - Some stories ask for courage. This one demands it. Marine veteran Rand Timmerman returns to share a raw, graphic, and deeply human account of Vietnam—what he saw, what he did to survive, and what it took to live with those memories when the shooting stopped. We open with a trigger warning for good reason: a suicide on his first night in-country, chaotic airlifts into hot zones, and an accidental death that still haunts him. Rand walks us through helicopter gunner missions where landing meant risking a minefield, and a midair struggle over a pilot's unsecured revolver that ended with a prisoner out one door and Rand hanging from a skid at altitude. The ground war was no less brutal. In a reaction platoon ambush, his unit ran out of ammo; he fixed bayonet, fought, and fled to a river where he hid for days while grenades exploded nearby. Rescue pulled him into another horror—collecting bodies after a C-130 crash that obliterated a village—then onto a hospital ship where he realized he was “okay” only by comparison to a Marine who'd lost his jaw. That moment shifted his mindset from terror to cold acceptance: do the job, and let go of what you can't control.Coming home brought a different kind of wound. Rand was shoved and called “baby killer” at LAX, learned to hide his uniform, and followed his father's order to bury the war deep. He built a life—law school, family, work—until the nightmares flooded back, dragging him into years of alcohol-fueled numbness. The turning point arrived at the VA and through a 12-step path that replaced isolation with service. Today, Rand mentors veterans and chronic relapsers, writes to heal, and speaks with a clarity that cuts through myth: PTSD recovery is possible, purpose is medicine, and telling the truth can save lives. If stories of resilience, veteran mental health, and trauma recovery matter to you, press play. #192 - Some moments feel like they're nudging us forward. Stephen Seidel's life is full of those nudges: a favorite Eagles player on the flight to a funeral, a foggy window shaped like an eagle on the day of a tribute, a childhood hero literally saving him from choking. We unpack how he alchemized those signs, along with profound loss, into a mission centered on connection, courage, and story.Stephen grew up a sports-obsessed kid in Philly, short but scrappy, learning early how shared rituals create belonging. After losing his stepdad and later his father, and while caring for his mother during the pandemic from a laundry-room office, he faced relentless pressure as a dad, husband, and founder. His response was to build Gents Journey, a men's community where entrepreneurs and creatives meet weekly, ask bracing questions, and practice vulnerability. From that work came the Journey Deck, a toolkit that helps men open up with their partners, kids, and peers. We dig into Steven's G.R.E.A.T. framework—Grateful, Reflective, Empathetic, Accountable, Transformational—and how simple perspective shifts turn setbacks into momentum. He explains why “connection is your currency,” how the hero's journey gives structure to personal change, and why storytelling is the fastest way to build trust in life, leadership, and brand. We also talk adventure as play and presence, including his “Survivor in a Day” experience that surfaced fear, grit, and unexpected joy. You'll leave with practical ways to reconnect to your purpose, rebuild with the right people, and reclaim your voice. If you've felt stuck, isolated, or unsure how to start, this conversation offers tools, language, and hope. Send us a textWhat a lovely story Ethan shares. I think one thing that came out of this that really moved me was his being there and listening to a friend who had bulimia before he even knew how to help. The big thing! He listened even if he wasn't quite sure what to do. He was present even if he didn't know what to do. That speaks volumes to who he is.Ethan, himself, struggled with a concussion during COVID, and his pain and suffering were eventually released through his own experience with hypnotherapy, which inspired him to help others and become a Board Certified Hypnotherapist. What he describes as a "radical shift" in his life, he has been helping people implement changes.
