In the 99th episode of Run with Fitpage, we had a world record holder, Karl Meltzer, a.k.a., "Speedgoat Karl". Karl currently holds the record for most 100-mile trail race wins on earth: 38. Vikas and Karl discuss transitioning from marathon or half marathon distances to the longer ones, the ultramarathons. Karl is an ultrarunner and ultrarunning coach based in Sandy, Utah. Meltzer has won more 100-mile ultramarathons than any other ultramarathoner and has held speed records at major U.S. trails, including the Appalachian Trail and the Pony Express Trail. Meltzer's trail runs have been featured in news outlets from Ultrarunning.com to NBC Sports. Meltzer has been a professional ultramarathoner since 1999, and a coach since 2007. While many ultramarathoners tend to be vegetarian, vegan, and anti-alcohol or caffeine, Meltzer has been seen with bacon, Red Bull, and microbrews. On September 18, 2016, Meltzer set an Appalachian Trail record by completing the 2,190 miles over 14 states in 45 days 22 hours, and 38 minutes. This achievement was featured in a 2017 documentary movie "Made To Be Broken". Meltzer's record was eclipsed in September 2017 by Joe McConaughy in a self-supported run. The current A.T. fastest known time was by Belgian runner Karel Sabbe, who completed the trail in 41 days, 7 hours, and 39 minutes on August 29, 2018. Meltzer is the current Race Director for the Speedgoat 50K at Snowbird Ski Resort. To train with Karl, visit www.karlmeltzer.com.Vikas hosts this weekly podcast and enjoys nerding over-exercise physiology, nutrition, and endurance sport in general. Hokaspesial!

Karl Meltzer returns to the podcast to discuss the details of the new Speedgoat-UTMB race partnership. We also talk about his latest 100 mile victory and speculate on whether there will ever be a golden ticket race in Utah. Enjoy!
This week, we heard about Erik's race at the Beast of the East 50-miler (which was won by the incomparable Karl Meltzer) and Camille Herron's new American record in the 100 mile distance. We also reflected on our great interview with Pat Binienda, sharing our favorite pieces and biggest takeaways.
Scott is the best US Male Ultra Runner ever. That may change, but for now, no one can match 7 consecutive wins at the WS100 plus wins at other marquee events. He set the S-N FKT on the fabled Appalachian Trail in 2015, with a desperate effort at the end, eclipsing Jennifer Pharr Davis' time by 3hrs 13mins. The next year Scott's friend Karl Meltzer lowered it by 9hrs 29mins, then "the Belgian Dentist" Karel Sabbe demolished the overall AT FKT by doing it 41days 7hrs 39mins. Scott and his wife Jenny co-authored, "North: Finding My Way On The Appalachian Trail" and were the 3rd ever guests on the Fastest Known Podcast. Karel was actually our 2nd guest ever (take a look and listen - three years ago and these episodes are worth it). Time to catch up! On August 4, Scott went back for another go. This time with plenty of preparation and knowledge, unlike the first time when he and Jenny "On-sighted it". How did that go? "I started to feel my left quad on the 4th day. I shifted weight to the right, then that tightened up badly. I tried to slow down and walk it off, but that is not possible on the northern section of the AT." Very disappointing. Listen as Scott describes his specific training for this effort, as well as nutrition specifics. He feels that starting in the north, where the terrain is more difficult than in Georgia may have been a factor. "You don't get warm by sticking your head in a furnace." It's still too early to think about this, but we have to ask .... will he go back? "I still have so much to learn, and I still have more to give.” "You had to go and wake the dragon". - Jenny to Scott
On todays show we have Karl Meltzer. Karl is one of the first runners in our sport to truly go pro, specializing early on in his career in the 100 mile event. Since the late 1990s, he's won over 40 races, including at least 1 every year for for the last 19 years - both are records that may never be broken. He's also the Race Director for the Speedgoat 50k and perhaps most importantly, he's just a guy you'd wanna have a beer with. He brings so much awesome perspective to the sport. In this episode, we do some analysis on the American contingent at this year's UTMB, we talk about race directing, we speculate on a potential new 100 mile race in the central Wasatch range, and we reflect on what it takes to make a career out of this sport. I won't spoil anything for you, but this was one of my favorite conversations to date. Enjoy!
Karl Meltzer lined up for the 25 year anniversary race of the Kettle Moraine 100. The race had record heat & humidity that took many out of the race. We chat with Karl about what he learned at the race, and heard some fun ultra stories. Great conversation. We really enjoyed Karl and his wisdom & passion for the sport.
Karl Meltzer sits down to discuss his 100 mile race schedule, he dives deep into Speedgoat 50K, and dissects the competitive landscape.
The greatest 100 mile runner of all time and Mr. Western States face off in a debate for the ages about pacers and pacing. Then the conversation goes off the rails when their spouses join in on the fun.
In this new mini-series, our friend Shelby Farrell from goodr sits down with a variety of ultrarunners to get advice about training and preparing for Aravaipa Running's inaugural Cocodona 250. Today, Shelby talks with the long-distance legend himself, "Speedgoat" Karl Meltzer, who unfortunately had to pull out of the race due to an injury. Nonetheless, Karl is full of ultra wisdom that's helpful for anyone looking to tackle their next ultra. I talk with Karl Meltzer about how he got started with ultrarunning as well as define what constitues and 'ultra' run versus a normal run. We dive deep into his crazy Appalachian Trail fastest known time record. How he planned the 45 day record breaking run, his other failed attempts, injuries, diet, pace, van logistics, crew setup, and more. Karl talks about how he started to make a living running all while bartending at night. Some of his brand partnerships evolved into one of the most popular Red Bull documentaries of all time as well as designing one of the most popular trail running shoes on the market, the Speedgoat by Hoka One One. Hosted by Chris Cage with Greenbelly Meals.
This week I'm joined by Trail Runner and Ultra Endurance Athlete Grant Barnette! Hang with us as we break down his 2nd place run at the No Business 100 2020 and racing the G.O.A.T. Making choices in your gear, drop bags, crew, pacing and aid station management can shave hour(s) off your time. It might make it a more enjoyable experience too. Karl Meltzer is the winningest 100 miler on the planet. He's known as the “Speedgoat” and has run at least 75 100-milers in his career, winning over half of them, including one every year for 19 years in a row! What is amazing is that Karl is still running and winning races past the age of 50! He runs races similar to how he runs his life. By Davy Crockett For more than a century there has been a “sport” involving combining ultrarunning with golf. No, this isn’t a joke. In 2016, Karl Meltzer of Utah, who has more 100-mile trail wins than anyone, set a world 12-hour speed golfing record of 230 holes, covering about 100 kms in the process. This created attention in ultrarunning circles and we were left to wonder, how long has such a thing been going on? Running my local golf course What has been called “Marathon Golf” is the art of playing as many rounds or holes as possible in a certain amount of time, usually a day (24 hours), recording strokes for each round. Golf purists have despised this activity over the years. Ultrarunners are amused and fascinated by it. In 1923 a marathon golf frenzy spread across America and again in 1934 several athletes were contending furiously for the world record. How many miles is covered by playing a golf round? It depends on the length of the course of 18 holes. Today courses average about 6,500 yards. When I run every hole of my local 7,000 yard golf course straight line using a GPS, the distance comes to about 5.5 miles. Today for the average course, an average distance for a round is probably about five miles. Years ago, before golf technology improved, average courses were shorter with a length closer to 4.5 miles. There were, and still are, very short nine-hole courses where playing 18 holes could be as short as 3 miles. Birth in Scotland It is believed that marathon golfing was born in Scotland on a bet. In 1874, an Aberdeen Scotland golfer, W. G. Bloxom, wagered that he could play 12 rounds, 180 holes, on a short 15-hole, 2.3-mile course, and then walk ten more miles, all in 24 hours (about 38 miles total). He won the wager. Musselburgh Links. One of the world's oldest golf courses Bloxom found something he was very good at. Next, he played 16 rounds (96 holes) of the Musselburgh Links nine-hole course, for about 35 miles, against Bob Fergerson. They started at 6 a.m. and finished at 7 p.m. Bloxom averaged a score of 40 for the nine-hole rounds and won five pounds. While the Scots were perfecting their marathon golf skills, a golfer in Canada also wanted to golf an entire day. On June 19, 1906, Canadian, Leveson Gower, of the Ottawa Golf Club completed seven rounds (126 holes) in one day, starting at 3:45 a.m., finishing at 7:30 p.m. His average score was 97, and he covered about 32 miles on a very hot day. English point-to-point matches Maidstone Littlestone-on- Sea In 1898, two English golfers successfully golfed a 35-mile cross-country hole from Maidstone to Littlestone-on-Sea. A wager of five pounds was placed that it couldn’t be done in less than 2,000 strokes. T. H. Oyler and A.G. Oyler took up the wager and a student at Cambridge served as the umpire to keep score, “although if he knew the large amount of monotonous work attached to it, it is very doubtful if he would have accepted it.” The golfers took clubs with them along with about a half-gallon of balls that were newly painted, carried in a bag. Progress in the morning across fields was slow with hazards of hedges and ditches. After lunch, they played the road rather than across fields. But the balls tended to roll into the ditches on the side of the road, so they returned to the fields and woods. They stopped for the night and were back at it the next day. While on a farm, the owner demanded to know what they were doing on his land. “We’re playing golf.” He replied, “I just request you to leave as quickly as possible.” Difficulties include strong winds and a high fence that took five strokes to get over. On the third day, one of the golfers explained, “Twice our ball hit a sheep and we were frequently in small ditches, but could generally play out.” The challenge was accomplished in 1,087 strokes, 17 lost balls, and 72 penalty strokes. One critic stated, “Such feats as these are spectacular and attract att...

A resident of Boston, MA, Joe McConaughy set the Supported FKT for the 2,655 mile Pacific Crest Trail in 2014, and on the 26-peak Wicklow Round in Ireland last May. He is best known however, for his amazing Self-Supported FKT on the iconic, 2,189 mile Appalachian Trail, which not only bettered the Self-Supported record by 8 ½ DAYS, but also the overall Supported record of Karl Meltzer by 10 hours, and won him the Male FKT of the Year Award for 2017. "Not having a support crew really does take it down a notch from what you’re able to provide … you spend two hours in town, and leave carrying 25 pounds of food and supplies on your back.” Listen to Joe very thoughtfully weigh the pro’s and con’s of Supported vs Self-Supported: "I love going Self-Supported. At the same time, it’s incredibly hard to be self-supported for a long trail like that. It’s forced isolation from other people." "Stringbean" has a new website: http://thestringbean.co

Relevante lenker

Zach is an ultra marathon runner and a coach at Zach Bitter Running. Zach has held the 100 mile American record and the 12 hour work record. In this episode we talk about how a runner can make the jump to ultra distances and find out what it is like running on a track for over 400 laps. How did you get your start in running, I am guessing your first run wasn’t an ultra. So let’s start with the really early days. Did you start running in high school, jr high, where does the story begin? What was your high school career like, what type of 5k times were you doing So let’s start out talking about how someone can make the transition from someone who maybe is not an elite runner, but has a few 1/2’s and a few marathons under their belt and wants to make that jump to an ultra. What advice would you have for a runner. Should they start with shorter races like a 50 miler before they jump to a 100 miler? So if someone is running 40-50 miles a week what can they look up for a build up time and what type of volume do you think they need to get to before they toe a starting line? You have someone looking to train and do their first 50-miler, what sort of long run do they need to do before you know they are ready to tackle that? What does a week look like for this person trying to build up for the first time? Now they are spending almost a full day on their feet running, they probably need to be eating and fueling different than they ever have before. What do you recommend as far as learning to fuel for an ultra? Where do you follow on the scale, are you more of a Paleo low carb guy or more higher carbs? You mentioned 150 mile week, is that kind of an average week for you? To simulate the long runs many ultra runners will do two long runs on back to back days, is this something you implement? If you have two long runs back to back how much time are you spending running on those two days? So I am curious, when out running that long, do you listen to anything, music, audiobooks, podcast, anything like that? So you got the 100 mile American record and 12 hour world record in my back yard running at the Desert Solstice. So just to give our listeners an idea, that is 402 laps on the track. I can imagine some thing like hydration, food, restrooms, medical needs all being right there are great, but at the same time 402 laps. What is that like and how do you enjoy it compared to hills? What would you rather do, a trail or a track race? Karl Meltzer is out there on the Appalachian Trail trying to break the record, would you ever have any interest in anything that long? You have a package of training plans available on Final Surge, can you give listeners an idea of what is included in those plans? Link to his training plans How are you using Final Surge in your coaching? We talk about the Strava and Garmin connect features. @KarlMeltzer just broke the world record for the being fastest ever finisher of the entire Appalachian Trail, you know the Appalachian train, right? It’s a 2,190 mile hiking trail that runs along the East coast of the US, from Georgia to Maine. Now, I hike, and I’ve done little bitty bits of it, 4-5 miles here and there, on DAY hikes. I see people on the trail, with their huge packs and gaunt faces, and their lingering clouds of BO trailing behind them…and I give them major respect for undertaking such a long trek. I’d like to do it too, one day. Maybe. Anyway, On average, people take 3 months to complete the AT. You start in the spring in Georgia and head north with the seasons, finishing in Maine on the top of Mt. Katahdin in late summer. This guy, he went a little faster. He did it in 45 days, 22 hours and 38 minutes. To basically run, almost nonstop, up and down huge mountains from Maine to Georgia. He beat the previous record holder’s time of 46 days, 8 hours and 7 minutes, by about half a day. Ridiculous. And I thought I was pretty fit. Now, why is this of LGR importance? Well, we here in the Foodiness Fallout shelter like to hike, so this is super impressive. But, what’s really interesting to us really, is what he ate along the way to fuel his win. See, the previous record holder is Scott Jurek, who was made famous by the “Born to Run” book, about indigenous people around the world who are great distance runners, and how he is a champion of barefoot or virtually barefoot running. Scott Jurek, he’s a vegan. He did his record-breaking AT run eating vegan. Very impressive, I must say, because I know for myself, if I don’t eat an egg before a big workout, I feel weak, and he did the whole thing eating plants. Or at least no animal products, there are certainly plenty of energy-providing carby and sugary foods out there that are vegan. God knows there are plenty of overweight vegans and vegetarians. I was at my fattest ever when I was a vegetarian, maybe I should have done the AT. So Scott Jurek set the record for the AT as a vegan. But Karl Meltzer, not a vegan. He’s more of a fan of Foodiness. He fueled his record-breaking trail run on a regimen of candy, Red Bull, and beer. Ok, beer’s not Foodiness, I like beer. And it provides a lot of carbs for energy. But every night he’d have a beer or two, then as he ran, he’d down a Red Bull or other energy drink every 10 miles. At rest stops (btw, the trail goes through towns and there are stores adjacent to it in many spots that cater to hikers) he’d buy Spree candy, Three Musketeers bars, and cooked bacon. He’d keep those in his pockets and eat as he ran. According to the NYTimes article detailing his win, he’d sleep less than 7 hrs a night, and when his support crew found him napping, they’d feed him a pint of ice cream to get him going. For the record, bacon, candy and ice cream, not Foodiness. None of those are pretending to be anything else, but Red Bull and other unnamed energy drinks? That’s straight up F-bomb. But so what? He won, right? I mean, what’s worse, a smug vegan winner, or a Foodiness fueled candy-crazed winner? It’s not like you do this kind of thing every day, right? When he finished, he celebrated with a pizza, and a few more beers. Then fell asleep. As far as I know, he’s still asleep. I’d sleep for a week after that. After I finished the NYC Marathon in just over 5 hours I slept for a week. And then didn’t work out for 12 weeks. All I’m saying here, is that the vegan got beat by the Red Bull guy, and I think that’s pretty funny. I have no major point or point of view on this, extreme sports are just that, extreme. You don’t have time to cook your morning quinoa and egg and make your wild salmon salad with baby kale for lunch when you’re running the entire east coast up and down mountains. So, a major shout-out to Karl Meltzer for his record-breaking finish, and to Scott Jurek, you rock too, but maybe try a little bacon next time?
