Send us Fan MailThey say that a game is well-officiated when you don't even notice the referees or umpires. I sure can't say that about this NBA Finals, where the officiating has been atrocious. But if you've ever run an ultramarathon, especially a multiday race, and didn't notice the timer, it might have been because that was Mike Melton of MCM Timing, the absolute best in the business. I inherited Mike for the American Heroes Run after David unexpectedly passed away less than four months before the race and I suddenly took up the mantle of race director, and boy, did I get lucky because Mike ensured that not only would the race not miss a beat in the transition, but I've had a partner ever since that has helped me maintain the highest quality in the race running smoothly, with accurate timing and results. Mike and his company have timed everything from 5Ks to many of the most significant ultras in North America, including the Barkley Marathons, Big's Backyard Ultra, Six Days in the Dome, Across the Years, the Keys 100, and many more. In fact, he is on the road in his Sprinter van that has 500,000 miles on it for 265 days a year. He has seen it all and has some great stories to tell here. In fact, so many that I have split this conversation into two parts. Mike also shares his origin story in the timing business and as a runner. Many might not know that Mike ran 171 miles in 72 hours at Across the Years, and has a very respectable 100-mile PR of 22:49. Mike also tells about how he and David connected for the very first American Heroes Run and how it led to the development of the software that Mike now uses for races that run laps.Mike MeltonFacebook Mike MeltonBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram and Threads @stahlor and @we_are_superman_podcastYouTube We Are Superman PodcastPlease consider donating to support Team Leadville and Boulder Crest to help end veteran suicide! Send us Fan MailThe East Coast trail running season flips on fast, and suddenly you're staring down wet descents, ski-slope climbs, and a start line packed with people who have nothing to lose. We sit down with mountain runner and race director Aimee Kohler right before Sunapee to get practical about how you actually prepare for a short, brutally competitive mountain race when life is already full. She's coming off injury, rebuilding fitness in a compressed training block, and still managing a spring race directing calendar that leaves “balance” feeling like a myth. We dig into what makes a two-loop course tricky, why loop one can bait you into going out too hot, and how Amy thinks about positioning so she can attack when the second loop gets longer and more technical. She calls out the glades descent as the make-or-break section and shares how she's approaching pacing with restraint early so she can hammer late. If you love skyrunning, mountain running, and East Coast trail racing, you'll recognize the stakes: the moment you hesitate, the field swarms. Then we go full gear nerd, from traction and outsole feel to what Amy plans to race in (Hoka Zinal 3) and what she trains in when the miles get longer. We wrap with her summer schedule and big goals, including Whiteface, Loon, Escarpment, and Grindstone 50K with UTMB OCC qualification on the horizon, plus a look behind the curtain at Running Kind events and the logistical chaos of directing a Backyard Ultra where you can't predict the finish time. Subscribe, share this with a training partner, and leave a review, then tell us: do you race loop one conservative or go on the attack?Follow Aimee on IG - @aimskohLooking for more fun races in the Northeast? Michael ran his first Backyard Ultra in 2024 at BB Backyard and finished as the Last One Standing with 25 yards. Michael has fallen in love with the format and has improved his PB to 45 yards and in doing so, qualified for the Canadian Team which will be taking on the rest of the world in October at the Sat Champs.
Michael Owen is an legend with Ohio runners. He has a long history of running on the trails after he got his first taste of it, back in college. He then started SEOTR, Southeast Ohio Trail Runners, which is an event group that now helps to host 10 races across the state. His races range from one mile to 100. And if you want to go farther, then he is the race director for OBU, Ohio's Backyard Ultra, that can go for more than 200 miles! We chat about how there is a stigma thinking that Ohio is flat, but Michael hosts some very challenging hilly races that Ohio has to offer. His races also have a very family vibe and it keeps runners coming back year after year. Great chat with Michael and I hope you enjoy it!
In this inspiring episode, Alan sits down with Harry Taroni, owner of Greendale Performance Gym, to explore his remarkable transformation from late‑starter in fitness to Ironman competitor and event organiser. Harry opens up about his journey from being overweight to becoming a competitive amateur boxer, then pushing his limits through endurance racing. He shares details of his upcoming Backyard Ultra at Manor Farm on 25 September, a £95 event featuring a unique twist — a chain medal for every DNF and special pre‑race packages for participants. The conversation dives into the mindset behind endurance sport, the creativity of event design, and the balance between training, promotion, and storytelling in the OCR and endurance community. A candid, motivational chat about resilience, reinvention, and the drive to keep moving forward — whether you're chasing finish lines or creating them. Megan Eckert returns to Trail Runner Nation after an extraordinary stretch in endurance racing, including a third place at Cocadona 250, setting a women's world record at Big's Backyard Ultra and becoming the first woman to run more than 600 miles in six days. She explains why backyard ultras are less about speed and more about solving the strange little puzzle of time, sleep, food, heat, pacing, and decision-making, one hour at a time. The conversation gets into what happens when the body starts swelling after days of effort, how recovery has to be tested carefully, and why a runner's "toolbox" matters more than a perfect race plan. Megan also shares how mantras, gratitude, crew support, short sleep strategies, and breaking huge goals into smaller chunks helped her keep moving when the mental fog rolled in. The big takeaway is that toughness is not always loud or dramatic. Sometimes it looks like patience, curiosity, a good crew, and the willingness to step back into the corral one more time. Megan closes with a simple message: the best attribute is curiosity, because you never know what you are capable of until you show up.

Jared Webb had run in 5 Backyard Ultra's where he had broken 24 in all of them and had a PB of 31. That was till last weekend when Jared ran at Gumby and completed 50 yards to finish as the assist in an amazing performance.
Crazy ran his first Backyard Ultra last year when he ran a solid 33 yards at GV in Shepparton. Last weekend Crazy ran at Sydney's Backyard Ultra where he ran 74 yards and finished as the assist. That 74 yards places him as the 9th best Australian of all time and almost guarantees that Crazy will be running for team Australia at the Sat Champs later this year.
In this episode, Coach Todd dives into one of the most brilliantly simple — and brutally demanding — formats in endurance sport: the Backyard Ultra. With the BC Backyard Ultra kicking off this Friday in Sicamous, Todd shares what makes this event so unique, why athletes are drawn to it, and how the format turns running into a pure mental game. You'll hear insights from his Saturday Zoom bike class conversation with Richard, who breaks down the rules, the whistle system, the strategy, and the strange appeal of running the same 6.7 km loop every hour… until only one person is left standing. Todd also highlights the crew heading to the start line — Richard, Scott, Johan, and Kevin — and explores what motivates athletes to test themselves in a race with no finish line, no pacing plan, and no guarantees beyond the next loop. If you love endurance sport, mental toughness, or stories about ordinary people doing extraordinary things, this episode will pull you right in. It's about curiosity, grit, community, and the magic of standing up — again and again — for "one more loop." Happy Training! Coach Todd

This week Alan and Ian deliver a classic mix of chaos, comedy, community news, and heartfelt moments. From expanding the podcast onto YouTube, to broken ladders in the loft (yes… really), to warm‑weather wildfires and new Garmin toys — it's a proper catch‑up episode with all the usual Swift Half energy. They also take time to honour two huge losses in the OCR world, Jack Carpenter and Kev Lacey — reflecting on their impact, their kindness, and the legacy they leave behind in our community. But it's not all heavy. There's:

In this edition of Long Run Archives, Finn Melanson is joined by Brett Hornig and Jeff Colt for a wide-ranging conversation about some of the biggest debates circulating in trail and ultrarunning right now.We begin with a viral moment from the sport: Charlie Lawrence being called out to run a backyard ultra. Could a 100K record holder actually threaten the backyard ultra world record, or is the discipline too specialized for that kind of crossover? The group discusses what determines success in the backyard format and why the event continues to fascinate runners across disciplines.Next, we explore a provocative question making the rounds online: are elite trail runners boring? Are influencers better storytellers than professional athletes, or is that narrative missing the point? Along the way we discuss historical tensions between performance and storytelling in the sport and what audiences actually respond to.In the second half of the episode, we unpack two recent race controversies:• Ultra Trail Snowdonia's major course change after registration opened• The possibility that the historic JFK 50 Mile could move from its traditional course due to funding disputesWhat responsibility do race organizers have when circumstances force major changes after runners have already committed? Finally, we play a round of Overreaction / Underreaction, reacting to statements like:• Molly Seidel is already a Western States podium contender• Jen Lichter could enter the top echelon of the sport with a Western States win• Crowdfunded prize purses may surpass traditional race payouts• Kilian Jornet could still win both Western States and UTMB in the same seasonPartners:Precision Fuel and Hydration - use code SINGLETRACK at checkout for 15% off your next orderNorda - check out the 005: the lightest, fastest, most stable trail racing shoe ever madeRaide - Making equipment for efficient human-powered movement in the mountains Janji - premium trail running apparelKodiak Cakes - my favorite oatmeal and pancakes Momentous - use code SINGLETRACK for up to 35% off your first order Support the show
Backyard ultras are one of the most brutal formats in endurance sports: 4.2 miles every hour… until only one runner is left standing. And today's guest is the best in the world at it.Phil Gore is the 2025 Big's Backyard Ultra World Champion, running 764km over nearly five days to outlast the best endurance athletes on the planet. Earlier that same year, he set the Backyard Ultra world record with 119 laps at Dead Cow Gully. But what makes Phil so fascinating isn't just the distance he runs — it's the strategy, mental resilience, and precision behind it all.In this episode, Phil breaks down:• How he plans sleep in races that last 4–5 days• The fueling strategy that keeps him moving for 100+ hours• Why he doesn't take caffeine until day three• The mental framework that allows him to keep going when others stop• How his job as a career firefighter helped build the resilience needed for backyard ultrasIf you've ever wondered what it takes to push the absolute limits of human endurance, this episode will completely change how you think about ultrarunning.SHOW LINKS:Register for our race, The Desert Peak Ultra 100K + 50K at desertpeakultra.comWant to work with me to crush your next ultramarathon in our group coaching program? What if you didn't start running until later in life — and still became one of the best ultrarunners in the world? In this episode of the Everyday Ultra Podcast, I sit down with Megan Eckert, one of the most consistent and resilient athletes in ultrarunning today.Megan was voted 3rd overall in the 2025 World Ultrarunner of the Year rankings, became the first woman in history to run over 600 miles in a six-day race, finished 2nd at Badwater 135, and went 383+ miles at Big's Backyard Ultra — all after starting running at age 29.We talk about what it actually takes to endure at the highest level — mentally, emotionally, and physically — and why fun, focus, and simplicity might matter more than most training plans. In this episode, we dive into:• How Megan went from fearing her first race to thriving in multi-day ultras• Why focus — not motivation — is the real mental toughness skill• How to approach massive races like Cocodona 250 without overcomplicating training• What backyard ultras and fixed-time events teach you about yourself• Why making training fun is a performance enhancer (not a distraction)• The mindset shift that helps athletes push through pain without breaking• How she recovers between massive races — including an underrated recovery tool• Why finding your people in the sport can change everythingWhether you're training for your first ultra or chasing your biggest endurance goal yet, this conversation is packed with perspective, wisdom, and reminders of why we run in the first place.

She opens up about the "superpower" of community, recovering from major Achilles surgery, and the tactical aggression needed to stay in the Top 10 in today's ultra scene.Whether you're curious about her hydration struggles (losing 14lbs of water weight!) or her "singular goals" during world championships, this episode is a masterclass in the mindset of a champion.Coaching Announcement!

The Mount Ascutney Vertical Backyard Ultra is a last person standing style race in which participants climb 1209 feet of vertical every hour (with 2.25 miles) until there is only one person left standing. 24 hours is equal to the elevation of Mount Everest, but this race went far beyond that. What happens after you run for five straight days — 466 miles, 111 hours, two broken ribs, a torn hamstring… and then go right back to teaching high-school civics on Monday? In this rare, intimate conversation, ultrarunner Harvey Lewis shares a front-row look into his healing journey after Big Dog's Backyard Ultra — widely considered one of the toughest and strangest endurance races in the world. This is not just a running episode. It's about recovery, identity, and the small, consistent choices that help everyday people rebuild and age with strength.Harvey opens up about:How he cracked his ribs and tore his hamstring on Day 5Why he kept going for 12 more hours after the injuryThe exact recovery tools he used (sleep, sauna, red light, ART therapy, movement)How he distinguishes “trying harder” from “trying smarter”Why purpose (his Haiti fundraiser) kept him movingThe mindset shifts that matter more at 49 than mileage ever didHow a human-powered commute — even on crutches — became part of his rehabThe real meaning of resilience, especially after setbacksThis episode is shorter than usual as Harvey had to get back to class — but we hope to bring him back for Part Two.And a personal note: We just crossed 100 consecutive weekly episodes of Ageless Athlete. By Ken Loucks - This message invites listeners to rethink what “running the race” really means. Instead of chasing a finish line we can see, it shows that faith is more like Big Al's Backyard Ultra—a race with no set end, where endurance is tested one lap at a time. Through the eyes of someone who successfully won
What kind of person dreams up the hardest race on earth, and then follows it up with one of the weirdest? This week on The Trailhead, Zoë and Brendan dive deep into the mind of Lazarus Lake, the man behind both the Barkley Marathons and Big's Backyard Ultra. Our guest, author Jared Beasley, joins to talk about his new book on Laz, unpacking the mystery, mischief, and mythology that made one man's backyard into a global endurance phenomenon. We explore what drives people to suffer on purpose, why Laz's races capture our collective imagination, and what they say about the culture of ultrarunning itself.

Andrew Drummond is the heartbeat of the White Mountain trail running community -ultrarunner, ski mountaineer, and race director who set the FKT on the Direttissima, summiting all 48 NH 4,000-footers in under five days. We dive into his adventures in ultramarathons, backcountry skiing, and community building in Jackson, NH, including the White Mountain 100, Bubba's Backyard Ultra, and guiding Scott Jurek through the toughest terrain in the East. As our conversation with Andrew unfolds, what emerges isn't just a tale of mountains or miles, but a love story-of place, of lifestyle, of belonging. It's about finding connection, losing it, and carrying that emptiness until the trail brings you back to what makes you whole. For our 200th episode, I'm honored to welcome two legends of the endurance world: Lazarus Lake, the mastermind behind the Barkley Marathons and Big's Backyard Ultra and author Jared Beasley, whose new book The Endurance Artist dives deep into Laz's life and legacy. We talk about what it really means to chase the impossible, how pain and discomfort shape us, and why the “Danny's” of the sport (everyday athletes who rise beyond expectation) are so inspiring. Laz shares lessons from a lifetime of running, coaching, and creating races that break people down and build them back up, while Jared gives us a writer's view into the grit, humor, and heart of these iconic events. From dogs as life coaches to the team dynamics hidden in solo suffering, this conversation is a raw and memorable celebration of endurance, resilience, and living life to its fullesthttps://8020books.com/product/the-endurance-artist/Life Coaching with Travis MacyAre you a middle-aged man looking for a wise and powerful teammate to support your expansive journey in work, family, athletics, and life?
