Dylan Schubert shocked the running world when he crossed the finish line in Madison in 3rd. But he believed he was due for a breakthrough. Despite a rocky summer filled with injury, Dylan maintained faith and confidence in himself. Today's conversation chronicles the journey and story of Dylan. Back in HS, Dylan was a 4:18, 9:09, 14:53 guy who qualified for NXN in both 2018 and 2019. In college, despite not getting much recognition, Dylan has steadily been climbing to become one of the best runners in the country. He's a 3xXC All-American (11th, 24th, 3rd), an Outdoor NCAA qualifier in 5k, has run 3:58 in the Mile and 13:29 5k, is a Regional XC and 5k Champion, and an 8xConference Champion. In today's conversation, Dylan walks me through his breakthrough performance, why he saw this coming, insights into his training, lessons from Coach Robert Gary, his ambitions for the future, his coaching business, and much more. GRAHAM VOTED FOR PEDRO RETURNS TO THE PODCAST Last November, Graham won the 2023 NCAA title on the grass and two weeks later put an NCAA record to his name. This year Graham won an NCAA title on the grass going BACK-TO-BACK and joining an elite crew who have done so. The last four Americans to repeat as NCAA cross-country champion are Gerry Lindgren, Steve Prefontaine, Conner Mantz, and now Graham. Not bad company. Graham is also an Olympian for the US in the 5k where he placed 9th in the World. Graham just ran 12:59 in the 5k at BU to set a collegiate record and get the World-Standard. He announced yesterday that he turned professional with New Balance. In today's conversation, you can hear exclusive insights on the journey and 2024 season of Graham Blanks and all that went into it. Graham also discusses his thoughts on being loose and having fun within the sport, why he drank a beer the night before his collegiate record, the training he did leading into the 2024 NCAA XC Championship Meet, what he wants his legacy to be, and so much more. This one is an all-timer. Watch long enough to see JFKs and Oppenheimer's dorm. #iykyk Tap into the Graham Blanks Special. “It's time to move on to bigger adventures.” Graham Blanks, the Harvard standout and two-time NCAA cross country champion joins The CITIUS MAG Podcast with the news about his decision to turn professional with New Balance. Just two days ago, Graham ran 12:59.89 for 5000 meters indoors, becoming only the second collegian in history to break 13 minutes indoors—a fitting way to cap off one of the most decorated collegiate careers in recent memory. In this interview, we'll reflect on Graham's Harvard career to the global stage as a U.S. Olympian in the 5000m and his incredible cross country dominance over the past two years. We'll also discuss his decision to return for one final collegiate cross country season, his plans to stay in Boston with coach Alex Gibby, and how he is thinking about balancing life as a new pro with finishing his degrees in economics and philosophy. “The pieces were there – but getting them to mesh and come together, we had to embrace the imperfect. We had to have these women realize that if you're scared of something, the only way to get over that fear is to conquer it. That was what this championship was for a lot of the women. My guest for today's episode is Diljeet Taylor, Head Coach of BYU's women's cross country and track team. She's one of the most inspiring leaders in the sport. Coach Taylor just wrapped up a storybook season by guiding BYU to the 2024 NCAA Cross Country women's team title. It's their second national championship under her leadership and the program's sixth overall. This victory wasn't just about redemption. It was about resilience one year after a devastating 14th place finish at NCAAs – the lowest moment of her coaching career. Coach Taylor and her team embraced the imperfect, leaned into their depth, and executed when it mattered most. From butterfly mantras to pajama parties to brilliant race strategies, Coach Taylor proved that with belief and preparation, anything is possible. In today's conversation, we talked about BYU's incredible turnaround, her approach to coaching All-Americans and building a winning culture, and why this year was a testament to her mantra, ‘Embrace the imperfect.' “The only magic thing about running is consistency. Consistent competence equals eventual excellence. That's kind of my mantra. So we try to stay healthy so that we can be consistent. We just keep on getting the miles in, getting the workouts in, and over time, good things happen. What was special about 2024? Who knows other than having the right athletes in the right position, the right belief and faith in their parts and goals, and going, ‘Hey, maybe we can do this.'” My guest for today's episode is BYU director of track and field and cross country Ed Eyestone, the architect of one of the greatest years ever for American distance running. From Olympic medals and top-10 marathon finishes to NCAA titles, 2024 was nothing short of historic for Coach Eyestone and his athletes. Just this weekend, Ed capped it all off by leading the BYU men to their second NCAA cross country title in six years, holding off a stacked field at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course. It's been a dream season for Eyestone, whose year began with Conner Mantz and Clayton Young finishing 1-2 at the Olympic Marathon Trials and ended with BYU completing a historic NCAA sweep—both the men's and women's teams claiming national titles for the first time since 2004. We dive into Ed's coaching strategies, his reflections on this monumental season and how he's built a culture of resilience and excellence at BYU. From the roads to the track to the grass, no one's had a better 2024 than Ed Eyestone, and we can't wait to hear his take on how it all came together. Agnes Ngetich impressed on the women's side running 63:04 and Olympic triathlete Morgan Pearson was the first American. Should he pull a Gwen Jorgensen and try and make the US Olympic team in the marathon? Show notes below. The all-female Athlos meet backed by reddit's Alexis Ohanian is on Thursday in NYC and we break down what it means for the sport and its chances for success. Then we preview the NCAA cross country season. Parker Wolfe and Katelyn Tuohy are gone but Parker Wolfe and Graham Blanks are back as are the Oklahoma State men. Can the NAU women get it done for the first time? What about Mike Smiths' legacy? Solomon Kipchoge is a 59 minute half marathoner for Texas Tech and a new comer to the NCAA ranks, so is Pamela Kogei, the younger sister of former marathon world record holder Brigid. Graham went undeafted all of the 2023 Cross Country season culminating in him winning the 2023 NCAA XC Title. He won in a time of 28:37.7 on Panorama Farms in Charlottesville, Virginia. He became the first-ever Ivy to win the men's cross country individual national title. Just two short weeks later, Graham lined up for his first race of the indoor season against a historic field, and ran a breathtaking 13:03.78 to win the race and set a new Collegiate Record. In today's conversation, Graham recaps his historic season and performances. He goes through many of the big ones, and breaks down the progress he's experinced and how he's gotten to where he is today! "I approached that race with the mentality of just sticking my nose in it and trying to give it my all. I didn't have an idea of what place I wanted to be because that can add a bit of stress and anxiety on top of racing if you're set on getting a certain place. I just wanted to see what I could do, especially with being sick that week leading up to it." Notre Dame senior Olivia Markezich just ran 8:40.42 for 3000m at Boston University's indoor track, which is the second-fastest in NCAA history. It's been a fantastic year for her. In the spring, she won the 2023 NCAA title in the steeplechase and then finished fourth at the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She returned to South Bend for one more full year and capped her final cross country season with a third-place individual and fourth-place team finish for the Fighting Irish. She also signed an NIL deal with On earlier in the fall. I'd say she's certainly a contender to make the U.S. Olympic team in the steeplechase and might even win the whole thing next June. In this episode, we chat about her rise in the NCAA ranks, how she found the steeplechase, why she returned for one more year, how she's continually surprising herself in these races and her hopes with the Olympic Trials on the horizon. Back on the podcast, straight off of two historic performances is the one and only Olivia Markezich! Olivia placed 3rd at the 2023 NCAA XC Championships in Charlotte, Virgina last month. That incredible performance led her team to a 4th place finish! This was also one week after coming down with sickness. A few week short weeks later, she opened up the indoor season with a time of 8:40.42 in the 3k, breaking her own school record which was previously set last season as she ran an 8:50.08. Her time of 8:40.42 also ranks #2 all-time! Earlier this year, Olivia won the 3000M steeplechase at the 2023 NCAA Championships with a remarkable time of 9:25.03, setting a facility record at the University of Texas. She has excelled in various other events, such as the 5000M, and showcased her versatility in indoor competitions, earning a national runner-up in the 3000M and contributing to her team's success in the distance medley relay. In today's conversation, Olivia takes me through her whole XC season, the ups, downs, and everything in-between. We also dicuss her signing an NIL deal with On, deciding to return to Notre Dame rather than go pro, her Spotify wrapped, and so much more! Tap into the Olivia Markezich Special. We brought some big-time gratitude to this supersized Thanksgiving episode! The main topic was a new study looking at how fueling during training impacts next-day performance and protein degradation. We are seeing a new world order in eating and training! We also present some contrasting perspectives from prominent coaches, trying to discern between data and anecdotes, highlighting where there is nuance. The future is here. The future is TASTY. And sometimes the future will be STICKY. With many listeners traveling for Thanksgiving, we figured it would be a good time to do our longest episode ever, full of our favorite discussions. Topics: methods to improve running cadence, training with music, winter gear and staying warm, a profound listener message on their fueling journey, a ballad for the thick hogs, the Western States lottery's exponential growth, an NCAA Cross Country Champs recap, Parker Valby's low volume running plan, the great Between Two Pines podcast, UTMB Whistler follow-up, our thoughts on Sam Altman's ouster from OpenAI, concerns about a SWAP podcast curse, Strava as a dating app, some of the science on sodium bicarbonate supplementation, worries about doping using worm blood (seriously), and hot takes. We hope this episode is like your Thanksgiving celebration: wet and covered in gravy. For a weekly bonus episode (and bi-weekly newsletter, plus merch), make sure you're subscribed to our Patreon. This week on What's What with Klutz #11, I chat about 3 main topics that are top of mind for me: - intrusive thoughts that cropped up from not being able to run as much - goal setting with competing goals - the NCAA XC showdown this weekend between Parker Valby and Katelyn Tuohy Note: when I was talking about the race where Parker beat Katelyn, I said it was the ACC championships, but it was the Nuttycombe Invite. Apologies! Watch the 2022 NCAA championships: https://youtu.be/vK_Gp7CcNYQ?si=bzwXnM_Q_21X_Qpk Enjoy, and send me your thoughts on how to celebrate 100 episodes!
