Dan Lawson is a British ultra runner and charity worker from Brighton. In 2016, he won the European 24 Hour Championships, and in 2020 set one of the fastest known times for Land's End to John o' Groats (LEJOG). Dan averaged over 80 miles a day on the roads and trails of Great Britain to break Richard Brown's 25-year-old record to finish in 9 days, 21 hours, 14 minutes and 2 seconds, setting the fastest time with robust supporting evidence. dmtwo media's Dave MacFarlane joined the crew for the entire adventure and in doing so has created one of the most memorable and endearing films about ultrarunning that you'll watch this year called 'Breaking Ten. From the treacherous A30 in Cornwall, through England, Wales and Scotland and battling along the A9 in Scotland, the ultrarunner's relentless progress, supported by his family and friends, is simply an inspiration. In 2015, he placed first in the Grand Union Canal Race, beating the previous course record by over three hours. He also placed first and set new course records in the Roseland August trail Black RAT (32 miles); the Ridgeway Challenge Ultra trail, 85 miles; and the Run the Rann 161 km ultra trail, India. Lawson placed second in the Spartathlon, making him the second fastest British runner in the race's history. He placed 24th in the 2015 IAU 24 Hour World Championship, Turin, receiving a gold team medal as part of Team GB & NI. Dan Lawson won the IAU 24 Hour European Championships in 2016 with a distance of 261.843 kilometres (162.702 mi) and holds the record for longest distance run during a 24-hour Ultramarathon in India, and the record for distance run on a treadmill in 7 days, having run 521 miles. Dan is founder of ReRun clothing company which repurposes and aims to prolong the life of running clothes and equipment to reduce items going to landfill. The film ‘Breaking Ten' is available to watch on Vimeo https://vimeo.com/ondemand/breakingten , as well as added out-takes and extra interview footage from the record-breaking run.

Angela started running at the age of 53 as part of a series of ‘small steps’ she took to improve her health and quality of life.  A friend then introduced her to the world of ultra running and she become fascinated with what the human body can achieve when asked.   Since then she has completed events of varying distances including 50 miles, a 100 mile race and the 190 mile Northern Traverse and a number of 24 hour races as well as taking up cycling and swimming.   A former surgeon, Angela has a passion to inspire others to take their own ‘small steps’ to adopt healthy lifestyle choices throughout life and has set up a social enterprise to encourage and motivate people to improve their future health.   Prior to medicine Angela had a first career in the computer industry but in her early thirties she went to medical school and retrained as a doctor. Thereafter she undertook surgical training and specialised in trauma and orthopaedics. She developed a special interest in older people and hip fracture. She combined her skills from both careers throughout her practice to improve services for patients. Among other roles, she has been a Trustee with an Age UK charity and chaired a Local Authority Health and Wellbeing Board. Each of these roles gave her different perspectives on issues affecting us as we age but a predominant concern is the level of long term health problems people develop through life.   Angela says that age really is just a number and, with increased life expectancy, it’s really important that we change our expectations of older age and remain healthy and continue to pursue our dreams and ambitions.  Setting ourselves goals of one sort or another can help give us purpose and a sense of achievement.   In September 2019, to raise awareness of the need to look after ourselves, Angela challenged herself to run from John O’Groats to Land’s End, ‘the JOGLE’, a distance of 875 miles. Overcoming extreme weather and injury, she found herself re-framing her expectations on the run.   Completing the JOGLE in 18 days, 10 hours and 3 minutes, at the age of 60, Angela set a new Guinness World Record as the oldest female to do so.   Angela has three children and three little granddaughters for whom she hopes she is a worthy and positive role model.   ‘You’re never too old to set a new goal or dream a new dream’     New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast go live every Tuesday and Thursday at 7am UK time - Make sure you hit the subscribe button so you don’t miss out.    The Tough Girl Podcast is sponsorship and ad free thanks to the monthly financial support of patrons. The North Coast 500 is often referred to as Scotland's equivalent to America's route 66! It's a 500 mile round trip from our northernmost city, Inverness and takes you to the far north of Scotland and through the Northern highlands. It was created in 2014 by the North Highland Initiative, a non-profit organization as a way of boosting economic growth across the region. The NC500 is not a single road or highway like Route 66 but instead is a series of existing roads that form a loop. It's become a major tourism success story in Scotland with tens of thousands of people having already driven the route. The Scenery includes rugged coastline, beaches, farmland, rivers, forests, lochs, and mountains. You'll also see local wildlife such as deer, squirrels, birds of prey, seabirds, and sea life such as dolphins, whales and seals. There are plenty of sheep and highland cows as well as things to see and do along the way like castles, heritage sites, museums, spectacular beaches, whisky distilleries, breweries and much more. Spend at least 5 days on the route to give yourself time to enjoy the scenery and attractions along the way but you can do it in a few days. The best time is in the summer months when attractions are open and roads are unlikely to be closed You can go in either direction, but if you are new to driving in Scotland then I recommend going anticlockwise and heading up to John O Groats first as the roads in this direction are easier to navigate and it means you are keeping some of the best scenery and worst driving conditions till last. The route will go past some spectacular coastal scenery, At John O Groats you can take photos next to the famous signpost with signs showing distances to various destinations or take a detour over to the Orkney Isles. Heading round the coast will bring you to Thurso, our Northernmost town where there's a great whisky distillery called Wolfburn, pretty good whisky. You come into areas deserted during the Highland clearances when tenants were forced off their land, many Scottish crofters emigrated to Canada and the United States. Make a stop in Durness to see the Smoo caves and indulge in some chocolate at Cocoa Mountain. It's pretty windy round here but you'll be hard pushed to find fresher air. You'll be spoilt for choice scenery wise and finally you'll reach the town of Ullapool, gateway to the Outer Hebrides and a wonderful wee town with some great seafood restaurants. From Ullapool down to Applecross is where the driving gets a bit trickier with single track roads and some sharp bends, blind summits and the rest. There are plenty of opportunities to get off the beaten track, instagrammable photo opportunities at every turn and the views will truly take your breath away. So now for some driving etiquette, the roads in this part of Scotland can be quite narrow and winding so keep your speed down as you never know what will be around the corner! There may be sheep or cows or even deer on the roads, a tractor or a cyclist. Some parts of the NC 500 will be single track roads which means only 1 car can pass at a time the side of the road you will find passing places, usually marked by a black and white sign where you can pull over to let the car coming in the opposite direction pass by. The custom is that if you see a car approaching, you pull into the next passing place on your side of the road. If someone is coming uphill, you give them priority and passing places can also be used to let traffic overtake you especially if you are driving slowly to enjoy the scenery. If someone flashes their headlights at you, they are usually indicating that you can go first, and 1 final thing, it is customary to thank the other drivers for letting you pass by raising your hand Passing places are not parking places so don't stop there to take photos, this could quickly block the road and the locals will be far from impressed. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/adventuresinenglish/message

In Today's episode, we have Mr Will Goodge (@wfgoodge) Will started his career as a professional rugby player before being signed as an international male model – modelling for Men's health, Derek Rose and Adidas to name just a few. A tragic loss in Will's close family leads to him falling into ultra-marathon running and becoming somewhat of a philanthropist -  raising 10s of thousands of pounds for various charities through incredible feats of long-distance running. In 2019 Will rand 850 miles from John O Groats to Landsend and last year he ran 12 marathons in 12 days in the run-up to Christmas! He has also head of running relations for CBD brand - puresport CBD (@puresportcbd) – so I'm super excited to hear more about this! I absolutely loved this chat with Will, I learnt, laughed, and cried so much during the chat! Will has an incredibly positive and free-spirited outlook on life and I think we could all learn a lot from his attitude to dealing with life's hardest times. Will goes into great detail on his mindset, tips, and key purchases for running success as well as how this reflects on his mindsets for life.

If you’re walking from Lands End to John O’Groats, there used to come a point where you walked off the map. The walkers trails that had snaked you through the quantocks, pennines and pentlands simply stopped at Inverness. The maps often simply cut off. And the only route North was walking along the hard shoulder of the main roads. This, realised a hardy and committed group of walkers from the Far North, would not do. They set about establishing a walkers trail from Inverness to John O’Groats through the stunning landscape of Easter Ross, Sutherland, and Caithness.Jay Wilson, the Chair of the charity working to establish this John O’Groats trail talks about what goes into making a trail along the clifftops, what he gets out of long distance walking, and what brought him from his home town on the Apalachian trail to Inverness, Berriedale, and ultimately, John O’Groats.Meanwhile, Pete and Matt wonder where one can wander in Scotland. And Matt gets needlessly scatological in his research.

‘The only option I have is to keep going, and I am going to keep going’ Vedangi has always been active, playing football at a high level until she moved to the UK at 17. Wanting to challenge herself, she embarked on long bike trip across the Himalayan passes, a journey of around 800-900km. She completed this despite tough terrain, high altitude, and poor weather conditions. Beginning a Sports Management degree in 2016, she continued to train for her future cycling challenges. Following a stay with a stranger on a training cycle, she decided that day to cycle to John O’Groats; two and half weeks later she made it, and considered where to set her sights next. Vedangi decided she would circumnavigate the world by bike, aiming to beat the record and do it in the fastest time so far. Beginning her challenge in Australia, Vedangi set off by herself. The journey was not always plain sailing. Having been chased by grizzly bears, and hit by a mini bus, Vedangi faced her biggest challenge in Spain where she was knocked off her bike and robbed at knife-point by two men and thrown head first into a ditch. This left her concussed and having panic attacks as she continued her cycle. Throughout everything she never questioned that she would keep going, and never once thought of giving up. Grateful to be alive, she reached Australia and could claim the impressive accolade of being the youngest person to circumnavigate the world by bike. Once Vedangi had completed her challenge and returned home, she realised that university wasn’t for her and that what she really wanted to do was help to plan and manage other people’s expeditions. She now runs The Adventure Shed, a business that provides end to end expedition management services and aims to make adventure accessible for all. She hopes to inspire people to take action to take on their own challenges and push themselves in the way she has always done. - The Adventure Shed - Vedangi Kulkarni

This week on RunPod, joining Jenni down the line is actress and singer and new runner Suzanne Shaw. It’s hard to believe that Suzanne only started running in 2020 and truly caught the running bug by changing the way she thought about exercise. She’s went from wondering whether she could run 5k to running 17k within a month and has really leapt trainer first into the sport. Suzanne talks about how running has helped her to know herself, the benefits that swapping to a plat-based lifestyle has given her, her desire to run a marathon - AND an ultra marathon and her mission to virtually run and cycle from John O’Groats to Lands End. A hugely inspiring and uplifting listen from someone who matches Jenni’s passion for running.

My guest on the show is the fantastic Fiona Quinn, an endurance adventurer, entrepreneur and keynote speaker. Just a few years ago, Fiona was new to adventuring, finding her feet with small local cycling trips. Fast forward to the end of 2018, she was able to paddleboard 800 miles across 81 days from Land’s End to John O'Groats, despite having a deep fear of the sea created when she almost drowned as a child. In completing this paddleboarding achievement, she became the first ever woman to complete a length of Britain triathlon, having already walked and cycled the route in previous years. ----more---- To recount her stories and experiences along the journey, she has released her new book, aptly named ‘Ignore the fear’, including tales of ocean whirlpools and paddling with dolphins. In other adventures, she has completed the Cam triathlon, circumnavigated the Isle of Wight and wild camped on Dartmoor. Striving to support the wider adventure community, Fiona has used her entrepreneurial spirit to start the adventure book club, where a collective discusses a different adventure book every month. In this episode, we discuss her process of discovering her inner adventurer as she gained a new sense of confidence and independence. We talk through how her interest in adventure eventually snowballed into walking, cycling and paddleboarding the length of Britain. She shares how her mission presented her with new challenges, from trench foot to wild Scottish whirlpools. In the conversation, she gives a real insight into how she has changed her relationship to fear through her experiences and developed a mindset that has enabled her to complete her endurance challenges. In addition, we cover some practical tips for budding adventurers to turn inspiration into action.   Fiona believes that it is important to find your own unique adventurous spirit and explore on your own terms. I feel this attitude is so empowering for those who have not yet had any adventure experience, but also highly relevant for more seasoned explorers out there too. Apologies for the lower quality audio in this episode. The Zoom call I had with Fiona had an unstable internet connection, which impacted the recording. Hello everybody and a very warm welcome to episode 4 of the Adventure Geek Walking Club Podcast.  This is a show for those who love everything to do with the outdoors, backpacking and hiking. Hopefully, we have something for everyone in each episode. So without further ado, let me explain the contents of this week's show. We always start the podcast with a bit of a quiz in the form of “guess the sound”.  This will be the sound of an animal, bird, or something to do with the outdoors.  I will always give you a bit of a clue before the sound and then reveal the answer and a few fun facts about the animal at the end of the show. The second segment continues with the adventures of Derek & Doreen.  Today they experience the Heart of the Shires walk (not the 3 Shires Hospital walk!), and I am pleased to say that Julia got the postcode right this time! Segment number three is an interview with Mark Vincent who talks about the Corona Virus and the impact the current situation can have on our mental health. The fourth segment is an education slot. This week I will reveal one of my favourite travel authors.  We then end the show with Janet & John’s latest antics. This week we learn all about stiles and where to not to hide your sweets when you have no pockets! #1 - GUESS THE SOUND So, without further ado, let’s get this show on the road, and see if you can guess this week’s soundbite.  I did promise a bit of a clue, so I googled “unknown facts about this animal”.  Google told me that these animals do not sleep in the same way that we do and the reason for this is that when they sleep they stop breathing! Here’s the sound…. PLAY SOUND The answer to the soundbite will be revealed at the end of the podcast.  #2 - DEREK AND DOREEN EXPLORE THE HEART OF THE SHIRES Over to Nigel for this week’s episode of Derek & Doreen.  SWOOSH PLAY DERICK & DOREEN EPISODE 2 Thanks, Nigel.  You can’t beat a hot crumpet smothered in butter after a long hard walk…. said, Julia! I’m looking forward to next week’s episode where Derek & Doreen go shopping! #3 - INTERVIEW WITH MARK VINCENT I am now going to transition over to this week’s interview with Mark Vincent.  If you know someone who is struggling during these difficult times then this will be a good episode to listen to.  I personally grabbed a few golden nuggets to help me deal with my own social isolation, so I believe there is something in this interview for everyone. SWOOSH PLAY INTERVIEW Thanks for your time today Mark, you were awesome.  For our listeners, all the resources that we mentioned in the interview is available in the podcast show notes.  If you are on Instagram then check out Matt Haig https://www.instagram.com/mattzhaig/ Remember the only things we need to get through this pandemic, in the words of Matt Haig is food, health, home and each other…. the rest can wait. Terry Waite summary Five top tips for coping with isolation from Terry Waite who spent 1,763 days in captivity in Beirut from 1986 to 1991 #1 Keep in contact with others via digital and other means, while staying safe and remaining physically apart. #2 Keep yourself well: don’t slob around all day in pyjamas and a dressing gown! #3 Keep up a routine: get up at a certain time, eat regular meals. #4 Take exercise: dust off the exercise bike, do some online exercise or go for a walk. #5 Take this time of restriction as an opportunity: do some of those things you’ve been meaning to do for years, such as reading that book that’s been on your shelves for years! “In solitude, we are in fact together, so keep hope alive and don’t allow despair to destroy a difficult but potentially creative period of your life.” Julia Samual - women’s hour - This too shall pass (website here) Sending a postcard/flowers - Touchnote app Mindfulness, NHS England and lots of resources.  7/11 breathing technique - download the PDF here.  BorrowBox Library Audiobook App - download here.  5 Steps to Mental Wellbeing by the NHS - resource here Next week we have Pat Hipkiss talking about Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail! PING #4 - EDUCATION SLOT Right, time for this week’s education slot.  This week I wanted to share with you a very talented author who is from Northampton.  George Mahood’s style of writing is hugely entertaining.  His first book called Free Country is a true story about George and his best mate Ben who decided to cycle from Lands End to John O Groats without a single penny, oh… and without any bikes!  They started at the famous information centre at Lands End in just their Union Jack boxer shorts, and off they went!  They relied on the generosity of the general public to help with food, shelter and clothing and they also managed to get bikes (George had a kids racer which was way to small for him) from a rubbish dump in Cornwall.  If you want a lighthearted read about an adventure of a lifetime then check out George’s website www.georgemahood.com - I have read all of his books and can’t put them down.  PING  #5 - SOUNDBITE ANSWER Before we go into our finale with “Janet & John go walking” I would like to reveal the soundbite answer from the beginning of the show.  For those of you who guessed a whale, you would be right!  Whales do not sleep, but a few other facts include:- Whale "vomit" is used in perfumes. The story of Moby Dick is real. Accumulated ear wax can tell a whale's age PING #6 - JANET AND JOHN - CRUSHED SHERBET LEMONS!  We are going to end the podcast with the amazingly talented Shiny Shoes as he reads the lates Janet and John adventures.  Over to you John.  PLAY JANET & JOHN EPISODE 1 Thanks, John - we all want to know if John actually ate his crushed sherbet lemons? It’s lovely to be introduced to new characters, and I think we can all relate to the muddy puddles scenario - the bit about the ferry had me in stitches! As I draw the podcast to a close, I would like to leave you with this final thought from the 1939 film, The Wizzard of Oz. “There's no place like home.” We can go on lots of adventures, but at the end of the day, it is always lovely to get home and snuggle up in your own bed. See you next week!

This was another live episode so Kelly had the opportunity to “show and tell” her 1958 Lace Cardigan. This sweater was started before I was much of a knitter and had to be put away for quite a long time while my knitting skills caught up to my plans!  The discussion about how little instruction there was in old patterns reminded Marsha of a series of videos by Arne and Carlos about Norwegian sweaters and their history.  Marsha’s Projects: I finished my Dusk Into Twilight Shawl by Rosemary Hill. I used Two Ewes Fiber Adventures Replenish Rambouillet fingering dyed by Kelly in three colors, Bourbon and Suede, Falling Leaves, and Aquamarine.  Finished the heel flap of second John O Groats. Using Yarns From the Plain sock yarn. Finished  Goro Anamara hat by Valeria Garcia. Using Stonehedge Fiber Mill Shepherd’s Wool Worsted.  Correction: Frank Jernigan’s website is Phrancko.com this is a correction from a previous episode show notes. Frank upgraded my account to premiere and I can get custom patterns for $1. Thinking of using Frank’s program to make a sweater for Ben out of North Ronaldsay yarn.  Kelly’s Projects I’ve finished my spinning using a mixed wool roving from Shaky K fibers. It was a multicolor braid or Corriedale, Columbia and Rambouillet. Such a bouncy blend of fibers and the colors worked well for a 3-ply. I’ve also finished spinning a two-ply of merino and silk from Alexandra the Art of Yarn. It is burgundy and gold and as I started spinning I noticed that the singles  matched well with two skeins of Wandering Wool Udaipur (also a merino silk) in Cranberry Bog. So I think this spin will join those two skeins and become something. A sweater would be nice and maybe it would be my first wool pullover?  The  Mariannes Cardigan, a pattern by Trine Bertelsen may not be completely fine, unlike Eleanor Oliphant. I tried it on and although the “seam” where I am alternating skeins starts out under the arm, it seems to be skewing and twisting so that the seam is more to the front of my body down at the bottom of the tee.. Will this block out? Do I want to find out the hard way? Or do I want to rip back to the underarms and try again? If I put a faux seam on each side I could more easily hide the place where the skeins alternate and the “jog” happens.  Duren Dyeworks Spring Skeins Drawing Laura from Duren Dyeworks was having a sale AND she threw in an extra skein. The yarn is targhee heavy worsted to aran weight. We’ll be using it for prizes for a new giveaway. In the Ravelry thread show us how your used patterns look and tell us how you store your patterns. Marsha’s patterns are folded and mutilated by the end of a project. She has friends who keep their patterns pristine.  Check out the Ravelry group to participate in the thread.  Summer Spin Along? Fiber Adventurers have been talking about the possibility of a summer spin along. We both have plenty of fleeces and think it’s a great idea since we have so many fleeces needing to be processed and spun. There’s currently a thread in the group for planning for this. It will start at the end of May so there is time to think and plan.

Kelly recommends Girl Beer from Strike Brewing in San Jose, CA, Made for International Women’s day by her niece and her women brewer colleagues, it is a hazy double IPA. This pint sized woman is not too bitter and very strong! Marsha’s Projects: I’m done with the stripes on my Dusk Into Twilight Shawl by Rosemary Hill and have started the final stripe of lace. I’m using Two Ewes Fiber Adventures Replenish Rambouillet fingering dyed by Kelly in three colors, Bourbon and Suede, Falling Leaves, and Aquamarine.  No knitting on my John O Groats socks since we last recorded. Using Yarns From the Plain sock yarn. I finished my Isle au Haut (“eye la hoe”) pullover by Beatrice Perron Dahlen in Imperial Yarn Columbia. Last episode I talked about changes I made for ease. Sweater fits great! Started a hat called Goro Anamara by Valeria Garcia. Using Stonehedge Fiber Mill Shepherd’s Wool Worsted. Its been a slow start. First time cast on with the wrong size needles. Second time by tubular cast on was super loose and funky. Going to cast on a third time with regular cast on.  Lots of problems getting started, but all of my own making and nothing to do with pattern.  Kelly’s Projects I continue to slog along on my size three needles on the  Mariannes Cardigan, a pattern by Trine Bertelsen that combines crochet and knitting. Not a lot of knitting time in the last two weeks so I’ve made limited progress. Plus, I’m getting tired of all this stockinette in the round… I think I have about 2 more inches before I can do the crochet hem treatment. I’ve started doing some spinning using a mixed wool roving from Shaky K fibers. It is a multicolor braid and it’s been a delight to spin.  The most exciting thing is that I finished the Cotswold Ruana! I fulled it carefully in the washing machine and I love the way the fabric looks. The handspun yarn marinated for 20 years and then found the perfect project!
