(RV1960).

Then Dr. Brad Wilkins built the mathematical model that proved it wasn't, and Nike handed him the keys to make it happen. In 2017, Kipchoge ran 2:00:25 at Breaking2—25 seconds short. Close enough to prove the science was right. Two years later, the 1:59:40 happened in Vienna. The blueprint Wilkins built made that possible. Now he's back in a university lab asking an even bigger question: what is the actual ceiling of human performance? Spoiler: he doesn't think there is one. From the gut bacteria influencing your race day performance, to the hormone data that's about to change how women train forever, to the super shoe numbers the industry doesn't want you to see, Dr. Brad Wilkins is bringing the actual science, not the headlines. He'll tell you why your wearable is lying to you, why your brain quits long before your body has to, and why most of what you've heard about VO2 max, altitude, and recovery is noise dressed up as wisdom.Ten years inside Nike's most secretive labs. Forty-plus published manuscripts. One bold claim: humans have no limits. This is the episode that changes how you train.Tap into the Dr. Brad Wilkins Special. If you enjoy the podcast, please consider following us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts and giving us a five-star review! What should runners should eat to train for, and complete, a marathon? With major races like the London and Boston marathons approaching, more people than ever are taking on the 26.2-mile challenge. But what should you actually eat to fuel that distance? Ruth Alexander is joined by one of the most successful marathon runners in history, Paula Radcliffe, who held the women's world record for 16 years. She shares what it takes to fuel months of marathon training, and what it feels like when things go wrong during a race. Also on the programme is former world champion runner Steve Cram, now a coach and commentator, who explains the common nutrition mistakes he sees among recreational runners. And Performance Director of the dsm-firmenich Running Team, Valentijn Trouw tells us what it's like to oversee the performance programmes of elite athletes including marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge. Ruth asks them what runners should fuel their training, what to eat in the crucial days before a race, and how to avoid “hitting the wall” on marathon day. Phil Sesemann joins Elise to break down a big couple of years of marathoning – two 2:07 performances (Amsterdam and Valencia), Olympic reflections, and the steady, linear progression that's taken him from 2:12 to the fifth fastest Brit of all time. For Phil and his coach Andrew Henderson, marathon progress is built block by block (never biting off too much), with incremental gains shaping Phil's professional career. He talks about “hedging his bets” by racing marathons close together to maximise the chance of perfect weather, and the factors that separated a smooth Amsterdam from a tougher Valencia. We get into 140-mile weeks (that's 225km!), “easy runs with purpose”, and his go-to fuelling ritual for healthy bones – a pint of chocolate Nesquik after every run. Phil shares how training with athletes like Emile Cairess has improved his own self-belief and lifted his ceiling. Plus: life as a new dad (fewer training camps and more disrupted sleep), the legendary Mileage Mutts (his dogs Eliud Kipchoge and Haile Gebrselassie), moving away from a career in medicine, his commitment to an Olympic tattoo, and what a “best ever performance” at the forthcoming London Marathon really means. -- Phil Sesemann is a professional runner sponsored by ASICS and based in Leeds, UK. He ran 2:07:11 at Valencia in 2025, which is the 5th fastest time ever by a British athlete. Matt interviews high performance coach Selva Yoga following Selva's earlier public comments on doping in elite distance running. Selva has worked with male athletes holding personal bests ranging from 2:25 down to 2:07 in the marathon, and female athletes as fast as 2:38. He has personally coached athletes from 2:26 down to 2:16 in the marathon. The conversation breaks down how athletes are caught - in and out of competition testing, missed whereabouts filings, and biological passport irregularities - alongside claims of uneven enforcement. Selva alleges corruption within parts of Kenyan athletics, including bribery, advance warning of tests, falsified medical exemptions, age manipulation, and financial exploitation by managers. He also raises serious concerns around coercion and abuse of young athletes, while repeatedly framing his comments as based on accounts shared with him rather than direct proof. Matt and Selva also discuss well known training groups and high profile athletes, with Selva careful not to make direct accusations without evidence. He emphasizes that both Kenya and Ethiopia have strong, clean systems operating alongside problematic ones, and that culture, incentives, and financial structures often shape the level of risk. The episode closes with Selva inviting athletes to connect with his Toronto-based Northern Endurance Project. “Last year, I came into the indoor season with the sole goal of breaking 3:50 in the mile… That was the big goal to tick off. I thought I'd maybe have a shot at running 3:48-high or 3:49-low to mid, so to run 3:47 actually surprised me quite a lot. This year, I feel like that's almost the expectation now. The standard has definitely been raised and the bar's been raised.”My guest for today's episode is Cameron Myers. Over the last three years, the world has gotten to know what Australia has known for a while – that something special has been coming. At just 19 years old, Cam ran 7:27 for 3000m to win the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix, delivering the fastest 3K ever run by an Australian that's either indoors or outdoors. In the process, he broke national records held by Ky Robinson and Stewy McSweyn. He closed in 55.98 seconds over the last 400m and surged away from a world-class field with the kind of composure that you rarely see from a teenager. To put that performance into perspective, only three men in history have ever broken 7:28 before turning 20 years old. That's Eliud Kipchoge, Jacob Kiplimo, and Jakob Ingebrigtssen. That's the company that Cam Myers now keeps. He talks about that stat in our chat, but what makes Cam so compelling isn't just the time; it's the way that he talks about the sport. He's thoughtful, honest, and remarkably grounded for someone who's already climbing so high in the global ranks. In our conversation, he's open about the challenges that he's faced, including a recent medical setback that forced him to withdraw from the World Cross Country Championships. We also talk about his breakout race in Boston, why stacking training upon training has become his guiding principle, how he's learning to race to win instead of just hanging on. Plus, he'll be one of the stars of the Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games this weekend after taking third place last year in a U20 mile world record of 3:47.We're speaking with Cam as part of his announcement that he has joined the Coros roster of professional athletes, which includes the likes of Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Jess Hull, and Alex Yee. He shares a bit of his data-driven approach, but you can learn more if you read their blog post on him here.Cam is already rewriting record books and he's doing it with a long view of where his journey can go since he'll be one of the stars for Australia when they host the 2032 Olympic Games.____________Mentioned in this episode:COROS Blog Post - Cam Myers' Training: A Deep Dive____________Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Cam Myers | @camer0nmyers on InstagramProduced by: Jasmine Fehr | @jasminefehr on Instagram____________SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Olipop is a better-for-you soda that puts 6-9g of fiber in every single can. Today one of the most vulnerable, challenging, and meaningful videos I've ever made... A deep dive into how you can experience breakthroughs in your running and life.   This episode is different than usual. It's a presentation I recorded while trying to run a Sub 3 hour marathon and let's just say, not everything always goes exactly according to plan. The Best Advice to Run Faster, with Extramilest Host & 2:44 Marathoner Floris Gierman

Floris Gierman is a 2:44 marathoner, cofounder of Path Projects, 100-mile ultramarathon finisher, and author of the new book Running Breakthroughs.  He's done something rare: interview the world's best runners (like Eliud Kipchoge, Courtney Dauwalter, and Killian Jornet) and put all the best lessons, insights, and wisdom into his new book. You'll learn what keeps the most competitive runners going, how they train, and their best advice to excel. Pick up your copy here. I wanted to know: What has he learned from hundreds of conversations with such amazing athletes? What sets them apart? What makes them similar to us? From all he's learned, what would he recommend are the most important pieces of advice for a new runner? What about an experienced, advanced runner?   We're going to discus what he's changed his mind about, what's been most surprising, and who he's learned the most from. You can also watch this conversation on the Strength Running YouTube channel here. Thank you Previnex! After resisting most supplements for the better part of my life, I'm cautiously changing my tune. I'm now a Masters runner and in my personal life, I'm optimizing for longevity. I want to be my healthiest self for as long as possible and I'm excited to partner with Previnex to make that happen. Previnex uses the most bioavailable, clinically tested ingredients, the optimal form and dose of each ingredient, pharmaceutical grade manufacturing, testing of raw ingredients and finished products. For every purchase you make, they also donate vitamins to kids in need. Their new Muscle Health Plus is something I'm now taking. Turning 40 – and having a thin frame – has made me realize that I need to prioritize lean muscle mass to stay healthy and age well. Muscle Health Plus has creatine, essential and branched chain amino acids, and it's designed in a way to maximize protein synthesis and the absorption of amino acids. Muscle Health Plus will help you prevent muscle damage, which is particularly important for aging runners who want to protect themselves from muscle loss and recover faster after hard workouts. As is true for all of their products, Previnex adheres to the highest of standards: their ingredients are clinically proven to do what they say they're going to do. They're now offering international shipping so if you live in the UK, Canada, Australia, or anywhere around the world, you can try Previnex as well. Previnex offers a 30-day money back guarantee. If you don't feel the benefits of their product, you get your money back no questions asked. With their focus on quality and customer satisfaction, I hope you'll try it! Use code jason15 for 15% off your first order at Previnex! Thank you LMNT! A big thanks to LMNT for their support of this episode! They make electrolyte drinks for athletes and low-carb folks with no sugar, artificial ingredients, or colors. They are offering a free gift with your purchase at LMNT. And this does NOT have to be your first purchase. You'll get a sample pack with every flavor so you can try them all before deciding what you like best. And BIG news! Their newest flavor is now permanently available : LEMONADE SALT! LMNT's products have some of the highest sodium concentrations that you can find. Anybody who runs a lot knows that sodium, as well as other electrolytes like magnesium and potassium, are essential to our performance and how we feel throughout the day. If you're not familiar, LMNT is my favorite way to hydrate. They make electrolytes for athletes and low-carb folks with no Sugar, artificial ingredients, or colors. I'm now in the habit of giving away boxes of LMNT at group runs around Denver and Boulder and everyone loves this stuff. Boost your performance and your recovery with LMNT. They're the exclusive hydration partner to Team USA Weightlifting and quite a few professional baseball, hockey, and basketball teams are on regular subscriptions. So check out LMNT to get a free sampler pack and get your hydration optimized for the upcoming season.

In this episode, I talk about the modern tendency to obsess over “science says…” posts—like the viral claim that slapping your quadriceps ten times will wake up your motor cortex, spike your stretch reflex, and increase vertical jump by 18% and sprint speed by 12%. I describe why these numbers raised my hackles, walk through the reality of neural activation and theatrics we see from athletes like Karsten Warholm and Noah Lyles, and explain why a 12% speed boost would mean my 60-year-old 400-meter time drops from 60 seconds to 53.8, which is royal screaming BS. You’ll hear reactions from world-class masters sprinters like Lion Martinez and Cynthia Monteleone, and my reminder that most of these studies are done on minimally conditioned college kids getting paid $60—not real sprinters suddenly finding new superpowers. I also broaden the discussion to our habit of oversimplifying fitness with VO₂ max numbers, zone-two worship, HRV scores, and morning heart rate, when the truth is much more nuanced. VO₂ max is highly constrained by genetics, zone two is overrated, and walking and zone one deliver tremendous aerobic benefits—just look at Eliud Kipchoge spending 83% of his training there. I emphasize that intuitive readiness to train—your bounce, your warmup feel, your own voice—will always beat a wearable metric, and even the “best” performance booster (a gun to your head!) won’t give you a magical 12% sprint increase. This show is all about using critical thinking, not getting intimidated by data, and remembering that nothing is more powerful than your own intuition. TIMESTAMPS: There is some validity to the idea of waking up the central nervous system and priming it for a peak explosive effort, but Brad has some problems with "facts" that are on the airwaves. [02:06] We need to apply critical thinking to these scientific insights that get pounded down our throat every day. [05:26] V02 max is overrated and Zone Two is overrated. [08:57] Always come back to the intuitive approach which is the foundation of making correct training decisions. There is the version of running glamorized in sneaker commercials, depicting strong and resilient runners who get up early, no matter the weather, and hit the pavement to get their run in. For new runners, that version of running often isn't their reality. Dr. Philip Skiba knows running. In advance of the 2012 London Olympic Games, he developed a novel mathematical system to guide athlete training and performance, culminating in gold and bronze medals for the U.K. Men's Triathlon Squad. Dr. Skiba serves on the medical boards of both USA Triathlon and USA Cycling and accompanied Team USA to the World Championships in Australia. Dr. Skiba worked on an international project to help Eliud Kipchoge run the first sub-two-hour marathon, setting a new world record. His efforts were detailed in the award-winning documentary “Breaking2,” produced by National Geographic. He has personally coached dozens of elite endurance athletes and Olympic medalists. Dr. Skiba also specializes in sports medicine and sees patients at the Jefferson Orthopedics & Sports Medicine – Walnut Street office and at Jefferson Health – Navy Yard. In this episode, Dr. Skiba breaks down the top mistakes new runners make and offers his expert tips on how to develop a strong, healthy and consistent running routine.

One of the major talking points to emerge from last weekend's TCS New York City Marathon was Eliud Kipchoge. Following the completion of his Abbott World Marathon Majors Six Star journey, it felt like the end of an era for the 11-time Majors winner, 2-time Olympic Champion and former World Record holder. On this episode of Marathon Talk, we look back on Kipchoge's career—the highs and lows—and what we will do next. And one of the things he's suggested he'll be doing next is running a marathon on Antartica, so we're very fortunate to be also joined by a man who knows a thing or two about South Pole running, President of Marathon Tours & Travel, Jeff Adams joins us to tell us more about how the running tourism industry is booming now, and where he'll be taking runners to next. Lewis Wu is one of my running training partners and someone I've shared many trail adventures with: long climbs, heat, altitude, fatigue, and plenty of laughs. As the CEO of COROS, he didn't fall in love with running right away; it was data, curiosity, and steady progress that drew him in. From those first “boring” miles to recently finishing a brutal 100K, Lewis has built endurance with patience, consistency, and a willingness to keep showing up no matter how hard it gets.   Thanks to LMNT for sponsoring this video!
