During my recent long hours on trails training for the Leadville Trail 100, as well as in the Chase the Moon ultramarathon I just ran, I have been listening to several podcasts, and one I recently discovered and really enjoy is Buckle Up with Brian Passenti and Simon Guérard. Fellow New York area guy and Yankees fan Brian grew up running but had some significant detours along the way due to drinking and addiction. He basically missed high school after his mom recognized his issues and sent him to various institutions in what is actually known as the Troubled Teen Industry. His path led him to enlist in the Marines where he served almost his full hitch but got discharged for getting caught smoking weed. Following his return to civilian life, Brian continued to run pretty decently, although probably diminished because many of his runs were done in the morning to work off his hangover so he could show up at his job appearing to be sober. He finished Leadville in 2010 in less than 24 hours and was fourth-place in the challenging Silver Rush 50 while juggling running and drinking. A drunken bike wreck in December, 2016 that resulted in significant bodily injury led him to get sober. His running and his life have taken off since then. He has finished Leadville eight times, Leadman, the Moab 240 in 82 hours, and this year the Cocodona 250 in less than 105 hours. Brian, who has a wife and kids, now has the Buckle Up podcast and a thriving full-time coaching business called Altitude Endurance Coaching, and his clients include many training for Leadville and other ultramarathons. About Lucas: I was born with a rare condition called arthrogryposis, causing my left arm to remain underdeveloped and fused at the joints. The cause of this condition is debated and largely unknown. I consider myself very fortunate as it typically affects more than one limb. I was also fortunate to have parents who did not treat me any differently than anyone else and pushed me to not let my arm hold me back. Growing up I mostly did what people told me I couldn't or shouldn't be doing. I played basketball from the time I was young though high school, making the varsity team my junior and senior years. It was my first love and a way I could seek solace, challenge myself, and learn how to be a part of a team. I found a love for running in middle school and joined the cross country team. In college I ran a 200 mile relay race with some friends and loved it. I have since run the Leadville 100 mile race twice, in 2019 as part of the Leadman series. The most daunting race of the 5 in the Leadman series was the 100 mile mountain bike race because I only use one hand on the handlebars and do not have a prosthetic for my left. I was able to complete the race in time with my hand so numb that I couldn't shift gears. I was stoked.  I have since completed the Smoke N Fire 400 mile self-supported bikepacking race twice, becoming the first to do so as an individual with a disability.  Mountainous terrain is where I find the most joy. In my new backyard of the Tetons I've completed the ‘Teton Picnic' a couple of times and spend a lot of time biking around and running up various mountains. I am currently training under coach, Jason Schlarb, to become a better mountain runner and endurance ski mountaineer. With his coaching I completed the Restonica 70K and the OCC 50K this past summer, setting a PR at the 50k distance. During my time in Chamonix I was also able to advocate for adaptive athletes by speaking directly with the Admissions Manager for UTMB.     I am currently on a team of adaptive athletes with a goal of traveling from the lowest point to the highest point in elevation on every continent completely human powered. We completed South America early 2020. We also started the nonprofit called LowestHighest in which we are raising funds to help serve those with disabilities in the areas we will be traveling through. For example, providing a proper fitting prosthetic to someone who doesn't have access to one. I love to push myself to my perceived limits and push through them while exploring the great outdoor world and advocating for those in the disabled community. This journey is another way to do just that! accomplishments: Co-created the nonprofit LowestHighest Foundation. We have completed South America so far, biking roughly 2000 miles from Laguna Del Carbon to Aconcagua, ditching the bikes, and climbing Aconcagua  Was an athlete on the inaugural SCARPA athlete mentorship initiative  Came in 26th place, 10th in my age group, in the RUT mountain race in Montana (out of 500+ racers) and was the only competitor with a physical disability  Sponsored by Challenged Athletes Foundation Ran the Leadville 100 mile footrace twice Completed the Leadman Series (trail marathon, 50 mile run, 100 mile mtb race, 10k run, 100 mile footrace) all in one summer Only person to complete the Leadville 100 mile mtb race with one arm on the handlebars (I do not use a bike prosthetic)  Completed the Smoke N' Fire 400 mile self supported bike-packing race twice and was the first to complete this with a disability. In 2021 two others with disabilities completed it with me! This was sponsored by Challenged Athletes Foundation  Have completed the Teton ‘Picnic' Triathlon twice and am the only person to do it with a disability (22 mile bike, 1.2 mile swim, 22 mile run/rock climb with 7500 ft of vert up the Grand Teton, 1.2 mile swim, 22 mile bike Bike and Build 2016 rode my bike across the country from Virginia to Oregon building homes with Habitat for Humanity. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/whothewyldthingsare/support

On this episode I speak with the director of Warner Brothers Prop house Robert Greenfield. Robert started out as a Leadman with Set Decorator Nancy Haigh, on films like “Mars Attacks”, “Waterworld”, “Forrest Gump”, “The Hudsucker Proxy”, “Bugsy”, “The Grifters” and more. He then transitioned into Set Decorating on some of my favorite films like “Slums of Beverly Hills”, “Almost Famous”, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind”, “Introducing Dorthy Dandridge”, “Bad Santa”, “Rocky Balboa”, “The Road” and more. Robert took over running the Warner Brothers Prop house over a decade ago and has transitioned it's inventory not just into a trove of delightful set dressing but a place for Set Decorator and Buyers to shop for dressing with ease. Running three locations in Burbank with over 200,000 square feet at the main lot, his job of curating the set dressing pieces is massive. He has been an inspiration to me as a Set Decorator, and as the Director of the WB prop house he has made my job easier on many occasions with his calm and pragmatic demeanor. This year's Leadville Trail 100's winners both hail from Boulder, CO, so I got to venture a tad north and west to visit at the house of the men's winner, JP Giblin. JP seized control of the race just beyond Winfield, the mid-point of the race, and he kept adding onto his lead, finishing in 17:07:25, 40 minutes ahead of runner-up Luke Paulson on one of the hottest Leadville race days in history. JP, an Altra-sponsored professional athlete, is hoping this victory opens up new opportunities for him. Despite earning the Leadman title in 2022 for accruing the best time for all of the Leadville running and biking races, sponsors weren't yet knocking down his door, and a disappointing finish at the Western States 100 in June didn't help that or his path forward. So the self-coached JP tore down what he was doing and quickly pivoted his training, which obviously paid off. JP sees a lot of upward potential for himself being that he's only 29 years old with not a lot of miles on his bones. Even though he made his Leadville debut when he was 21, JP only ran one ultramarathon in a span of more than six years due to serving in the U.S. Navy. Uncertain upon his discharge about what direction he wanted to choose with his life, he cast caution to the wind to become a pro runner. So you'll hear in this fun chat about how JP bet heavily on himself, as well as about how he revamped his training, how the LT100 race unfolded, and what lies ahead for him. There are also some good nuggets to learn from for future Leadville racers and all ultramarathoners.JP GiblinInstagram @jgiblin13Strava JP GiblinBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor and @coachstahlYouTube We Are Superman Podcast

When I first ran the Leadville Trail 100 in the early 90s, and for many years afterward, there had never been a finisher younger than 23 years old. A few had unsuccessfully tried, but it was considered too much of an endeavor for a younger person to do the necessary training for an ultramarathon. But then along came Clare Gallagher and Annie Hughes, major race winners and record-setters in their early 20s. In 2019, I ran the start-to-May Queen stretch of the LT100 alongside college senior Harrison Hornung, actually named after the main drag in Leadville, who was attempting to complete Leadman, which he did. There's no doubt the demographics in ultramarathons have trended younger, yet I was pretty surprised when I was up at the LT100 this year and saw that there were 4 or 5 runners in the 18-19 year old division. Alden Iselin of Newton MA just graduated from high school and impressively finished in 29:11:33. I was curious what made this young man tick, and what I discovered is an energetic 18-year old who is eager to explore new places and challenges, and who wants to help others seek similar goals. He is relatively new to the ultrarunning world, too, having only run his first 50-miler in NH in October. In February, he completed the rugged Orcas Island 100-miler, which was complicated by bad weather, precipitating a 12-hour start time delay. His time there was more than 32 hours. I greatly enjoyed hearing about what sparked his interest in ultrarunning, his training, the challenges he has faced in his nascent ultrarunning career, what he learned in these first experiences, and about his extraordinary focus for an 18-year old. Alden might be a future star, and you heard him first on the WASP!Alden IselinInstagram and Strava @aldeniselinBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor and @coachstahlYouTube We Are Superman Podcast

When we think about health, we don't always think about brain health. We don't always fully understand how what we're doing is affecting it. It's sort of out of sight, out of mind... But in this week's podcast, hosted by Travis Macy, we talked to Dr. Edward Park, founder of NeuroReserve about the things we can do proactively to improve brain health and potentially delay cognitive decline. Dr. Park is the Founder and President of NeuroReserve with over 15 years of experience in the research and development (R&D) of biopharmaceuticals, medical devices, and nutritional therapeutics. He has been inspired by his experiences with his father's struggles with Parkinson's disease and dementia for almost two decades before passing away. Before NeuroReserve, Dr. Park led development of nutrition-enabling therapeutics for people with severe under-nourishment caused by cystic fibrosis, short bowel syndrome, pancreatic cancer, and preterm birth. At Alcresta Therapeutics, he successfully directed the end-to-end R&D, testing, regulatory approval (U.S. F.D.A. and E.U.), and launch of RELiZORB, the first-of its-kind combination-enzyme-cartridge to support absorption of critical long-chain polyunsaturated fats for the most malnourished populations. He also worked with major pharmaceutical and health care companies as an R&D advisor with Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) Health Industries Advisory, charting development paths for vaccines, cancer therapeutics, clinical genomics operations, and in vitro diagnostics. Before PwC, Dr. Park worked at Altus Pharmaceuticals (later Alnara Pharmaceuticals) in its commercial and development teams, where he led evaluation of early-and clinical-stage therapeutics for rare diseases, pediatric growth failure, hyperoxaluria and kidney stones, and chronic pancreatitis. Ed started his therapeutics career as an R&D associate at Bristol Myers Squibb. Dr. Park holds a Ph.D. in chemical-biomolecular engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he was awarded a U.S. Department of Defense–National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship, sponsored by the Office of Naval Research. He also holds a M.S. and M.B.A. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This is the first of two parts of a very fun conversation with one of the really impressive relatively-new stars of the ultraendurance world, Don Reichelt. After pretty much his debut doing Leadman in 2015, Don has plunged headlong into running long distances and doing everything he can to embrace finding out how far he can go in the sport. He has moved to a house at 9600-feet elevation near Fairplay, Colo., and has outfitted his place with a workout space, ice plunge barrel, sauna, and more. When he first broke out, he won the Lean Horse 100-miler and ran a blazing 13:16 at Tunnel Hill. He has won the 52-mile Coldwater Rumble in Ariz. the past two years. His most recent achievement was breaking the Guinness World record for running 12 hours, 24 hours, and for 100 miles on a manual treadmill, which is quite a bit more challenging than a motorized one. In this first part, we talk about Don's ups and downs running at the Leadville Trail 100, about his relationship to David and David's continued influence on him to this day, about learning the process to taking big jumps in his running abilities, which I think is quite educational, the benefits he's noticed from his vegetarian diet, and challenging himself to run races like the Keys 100 in Florida's humidity, and the Badwater 135, where he surprised a lot of people in finishing third in his debut. His focus and his curiosity to see how far he can challenge himself is truly inspirational. Plus, he's a super nice guy, so I hope you enjoy this great chat.Don ReicheltFacebook @Don ReicheltInstagram @runwithdonBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor

The ALL ME® Podcast Strategies to Increase Your Fat Utilization – Bob Seebohar, MS, RDN, CSSD, CSCS, METS II Over 70% of the US is overweight or obese and it is estimated that 45 million Americans go on a diet each year spending $33 billion dollars on weight loss programs and products. These programs usually advise the cutting out or lowering of carbohydrates, the use of fasting techniques or recommend dietary supplements. But what if you could manipulate your diet and food intake to help you increase the amount of fat your body uses as fuel throughout the day? In this podcast, I speak with Exercise Physiologist and Sports Dietitian Bob Seebohar, on how to become more metabolically efficient at using fat as a fuel source. We also discuss macronutrient needs for strength vs endurance athletes, fat burning zones, the best ratio of carbohydrates to protein for blood sugar control, and why carbohydrates are demonized. Stay tuned until the end to learn more about Bob's certification program and the only 3 foods he could survive on forever. About Bob Seebohar Bob is a Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics, the former Director of Sports Nutrition for the University of Florida and served as a Sport Dietitian for the US Olympic Committee. What is it like to persevere when your body is broken and your mind is telling you that you won't be able to make it? What makes someone push through anyways? Where does the grit and resilience come from? Tim Barr was at mile 40 of the Leadville 100 when he had his biggest ultrarunning "gut check moment". His legs were destroyed from the 100 mile mountain bike just a week before. He had spent all summer taking on the Leadman- essentially all the big races in Leadville, CO all within one summer. I was there. I watched him stand up and soldier on...despite the pure agony. And he pushed 60 more miles to the finish. This week we are chatting with Tim about this incredible adventure! I am very inspired by him and excited to share this one!!

Get ready for a super-exciting and motivational episode with legends of ultraendurance racing, Mark Macy, known to many as Mace, and his son Travis. Mace is an adventure athlete extraordinaire, including competing in every one of the Eco-Challenges during its original iteration from 1995 to 2002. I would take up an entire podcast if I were to read off all of Travis' racing honors. He set the record for the Leadman, which comprises the Leadville Marathon, 10K, 50-mile bike, 50-mile run, 100-mile bike, and 100-mile run. Podiumed the Adventure Running World Championships spread out over 5 to 8 days including running, mountain biking, skiing, winter mountaineering, orienteering, ocean sailing, canyoneering, and spelunking. The Wulong Mountain Quest and Ordos Adventure Challenge: 5-day stage races in China through ancient villages, rice paddies, limestone canyons, caves, cities, deserts, and mountains. Two podium finishes at Primal Quest, America's top adventure race. He completed the 24 Hours of Moab and 24 Hours of Leadville, non-stop mountain bike races on difficult terrain. The Rock and Ice Ultra, a week-long, self-supported winter journey through the Canadian Arctic on foot and on snowshoe. If that's not exhausting enough, Travis is involved in so many areas it's mind-boggling. He penned a book called, “The Ultra Mindset: An Endurance Champion's 8 Core Principles for Success in Business, Sports, and Life,” and produces a monthly newsletter to supplement the lessons he teaches in it. He runs Macy Endurance Coaching to help athletes achieve their goals, works with Team U, an intercollegiate fundraising endurance team dedicated to improving global health and alleviating poverty.  He hosts the Travis Macy Show podcast, which I highly recommend you find and listen to.  And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that he's also gotten into Colorado's official outdoor sport of pack burro racing. We are far from done here. Travis is now helping Mace battle early-onset Alzheimer's. As you might guess, that doesn't mean either one of them is slowing down. When first diagnosed, Mace wrote into a spiral notebook, “My name is Mark Macy, I am 56 years old and today I was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. My doctor told me to get my affairs in order and not spend time worrying about this diagnosis. He urged me to take vacations instead, maybe go on a cruise with my wife Pammy. I told him the diagnosis was bull.” Macy subsequently wrote: “Then my wife reminded me that I am 65 not 56, so maybe the diagnosis isn't completely bull.”  Later he added, “I finished day one of my Alzheimer's diagnosis with a significant decision: I didn't cause this disease. I'm not embarrassed to be one of many who has it. Instead of hiding from it, I'm going to share my story with anyone who wants to listen. My family and I are dedicated to fighting this horrible disease that kills people all over the world.” Not surprisingly, Mace and Travis competed on the same team in the re-boot of the Eco-Challenge in the compelling World's Toughest Race Fiji broadcast on Prime Video hosted by Bear Grylls. Why stop there? The Macys have a new book chronicling this journey titled, “A Mile at a Time: A father and son's inspiring Alzheimer's journey of love, adventure, and hope." They are also just super-nice and engaging people. But when you hear Mace say that he's going to beat Alzheimer's, it's not a stretch at all to believe him.Next book, "A Mile at a Time: A father and son's inspiring Alzheimer's journey of love, adventure, and hope” is now available for pre-order on AmazonMark MacyInstagram @mmacy146Travis Macytravismacy.comtravis.macy@gmail.comFacebook Travis MacyInstagram and Twitter @travismacyLinkedIn linkedin.com/in/travis-macy-92607633Bill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor

The Friday Newsletter |  Daily Gardener Community   Historical Events 1809 On this day, Thomas Jefferson (books about this person) wrote to his friend and favorite nurseryman, Bernhard McMahon. At the time, Jefferson was counting the days until he retired from the White House. From Jefferson's letters, it's clear that he was looking forward to spending more time in his garden. The previous July, Jefferson had written McMahon and confided: Early in the next year I shall ask [for] some cuttings of your gooseberries  and [I'll also] send a pretty copious list for...the best kinds of garden seeds and flowers.  I shall be at home early in March [and plan to] very much devote myself to my garden…  I have the tulips you sent to me in great perfection, also the hyacinths, tuberoses, amaryllis, and artichokes.   And so, when Jefferson wrote to McMahon on this day - a month before leaving office - he was following up with the list of plants he wanted at Monticello ("MontiCHELLo"). As you might imagine, Jefferson's letter reads the same as any written by an avid gardener in pursuit of new stock: Sir I have been daily expecting some of the large hiccory nuts from Roanoke…  but they [have] not yet arrived.    I must now ask [a] favor of you  to furnish me with the [items mentioned below] for the garden,  which will occupy much of my attention... at home.  …If you will be so good as to send them by the stage  which leaves Philadelphia on the 1st of March…  they will come in time for me to carry on to Monticello.  I salute you with esteem. An English-American born in Kent, he mastered his grandfather's nursery business in Ireland before immigrating to America with his mother at 18. After working for several nurseries in New England, including the property owned by Thomas Motley which would eventually become the Arnold Arboretum at Harvard, John went on to beautify Boston as the City's Forester. John's greatest legacy was transforming old circus grounds and a playground into the Boston Public Garden. After the Massachusetts Public Garden Act was passed in 1856, George Meacham was hired to design the park. But it was John Galvin, and his crew who installed the trees, shrubs, flowers, and turf. Outside of his work for the city, John opened the very first retail florist shop in Boston, making life much easier for him and his customers. Before John's flower shop, Bostonians had to order their roses and other cut flowers by mail. They would put their orders in little post boxes that John had placed in various stores around the city. It was a cumbersome process. John named his business John Galvin & Co., and the work became a family affair as John's wife and seven children helped the business prosper. Over time, the middle child, a son named Thomas, took over the business, and he became a successful gardener, landscape designer, and florist in his own right. John was a beloved member of many Boston social and charitable groups. He embraced his Irish heritage and loved dancing jigs and reels. One obituary noted that his favorite Irish song was Malony Don't Know that McCarthy is Dead, sung to the tune of the Irish Washerwoman. Two years before he died, at the age of 76, the April 6th, 1899 edition of the New England Florist shared a little story about John. They wrote, The veteran florist John Galvin, the father of Thomas W Galvin, had his pocket picked on the street the other day - March 31st, we believe. But [he] knew nothing about it until told by a friend whom [John] suspected of trying to spring an April Fool's on him. [That is,] until he found his pocketbook with $70 in cash missing. [But in a stroke of good fortune,] the thief, while being chased by the police, [dropped the pocketbook.] [John's ownership] was ascertained [after finding] his name marked [inside]. The moral is to get $70 in your pocketbook and then be sure your name is on it.   1944 On this day, Del Monte ran an ad supporting the quality of their canned and jarred fruit over homegrown.  Despite prior marketing in support of Victory Gardens, on this day Del Monte floated a pitch to consumers on this day during WWII that featured a woman holding a can of peaches saying, I learned the hard way all right! — and believe me, since I put up fruit of my own I appreciate Del Monte quality more than ever!   Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation Treasures of the Mexican Table by Pati Jinich This book came out late in 2021, and the subtitle is Classic Recipes, Local Secrets. This is Pati's third cookbook. It follows two previous cookbooks that were very well received: Pati's Mexican Table: The Secrets of Real Mexican Home Cooking and Mexican Today: New and Rediscovered Recipes for the Contemporary Kitchen. In her latest cookbook book, Treasures of the Mexican Table, Pati is sharing heirloom recipes that have been held onto in families for generations. These recipes utilize vegetables like peppers, onion, garlic, and countless herbs straight from the garden. Pati's cookbook is a hefty work - 416 pages and weighing in at almost three pounds. Inside, you'll find history and tradition, as well as cherished family recipes covering every category of cooking from soups to tacos, quesadillas, burritos and tamales and salsas, pickles, guacamole, beans, rice, and pasta, just to name a few. John's love of nature is reflected in much of his writing. John wrote: Nature is painting for us, day after day, pictures of infinite beauty.   John also recognized that beauty and utility didn't always go hand in hand. He once observed, Remember that the most beautiful things in the world are the most useless; peacocks and lilies, for instance.   John's named his home and garden Brantwood. The name Brantwood is Norse; Brant means steep. Situated on a wooded highpoint overlooking a lake, today Brantwood is administered by a charitable trust. As with most gardens from time to time, John's own garden experienced times of neglect. By the end of the summer in 1879, John wrote, Looking over my kitchen garden yesterday, I found it [a] miserable mass of weeds gone to seed; the roses in the higher garden putrefied into brown sponges, feeling like dead snails; and the half-ripe strawberries all rotten at the stalks.   As for his legacy, there's one famous garden saying from John Ruskin that has remained popular through the years: Kind hearts are the garden, Kind thoughts are the roots, Kind words are the blossoms, Kind deeds are the fruit.   Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener And remember: For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.

Tim “Lucho” Waggoner, formerly Luchinske, resides in the mountains of Colorado just outside Boulder and is a highly sought-after endurance coach. On Endurance Planet he's the vastly popular expert and co-host on “Ask the Coaches” (ATC) show. His experience in sport as both a professional triathlete and elite ultrarunner brings an incredible wealth of knowledge to the show. Lucho started running at the age of 10 and went on to multiple Kansas state track and field championships and was a two time All-American in college. He decided to drop out after two years and travel eventually settling in the U.S. Virgin Islands where he lived for four years. Tired of the party lifestyle, he quit smoking and entered his first triathlon and placed third. Fast forward, and four years later he placed 16th overall at the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, and was the top amateur. After 15 Ironmans and beginning a family, Lucho switched to running. He ran 2:41 in his first marathon and then 2:30 in his second. Eventually, Lucho and his wife moved up to 8,200ft altitude in the mountains, and this led him to try ultrarunning. In his first race, a 50-mile trail race, he won and broke the course record. He then went on to place 6th at the Leadville 100—his 4th ever ultra. To top it off, Lucho was the overall winner of the Leadman series in 2012, which includes all of the Leadville races. He now spends most his time raising his two sons, coaching athletes, and training for master's track & field racing. Tune in here to this episode of Grits, Guts, and Determination, The Leadville Race Series Podcast, a leading authority for all things Leadville! Host Cole Chlouber, son of race founder Ken Chlouber, takes us on a story-telling journey of the 38-year rich history of this race. We learn all the tips, tricks, and stories from the Leadville community members! Joining us today is Ryan Krol, a runner, biker and new founder of his own coaching business, Boundless Coaching. Listen as he shares about his move from the midwest, his career start with Lifetime, and his recent move into endurance sports himself. To kick off the conversation, Cole asks Ryan to share the story of how Leadville found him. He fell in love with endurance sports while living in Oregon and participated in the Mt. Hood 100 miler and Ironman. He got a job at Life Time with the hopes of transferring to Colorado in the future. To do well as a trainer, Ryan believes it important to find your niche. He established himself as the endurance trainer and built a solid clientele. Ryan has always been interested in athletics and tried his hand in wrestling and track during high school. It was during the 100 miler that Ryan really found what he was looking for from endurance sports - being broken down mentally and physically. After moving to Colorado, Leadville became his next goal. Then, Cole asks Ryan to explain what drew him to endurance sports in the first place. He has always had a good work ethic, and was drawn to endurance sports because they are all about commitment, rather than having a special gift or talent. Race day is the one day science can be proven wrong, and it all comes down to who wants it the most. At this point, Ryan has 4 of each Leadville run and bike races under his belt. Ryan's run time at Leadville has gotten even faster since his first race. He reveals his best time happened the only time didn't enter the race with the expectation to beat his record. The external pressure of having people count on you is a huge motivation for finishing. The bike race at Leadville has much more of a teamwork atmosphere compared to the run. The training methodology is much more specific and tends to attract more analytic people. The DNF rate for the run is much higher than the bike because of it's time length. Though Cole often hints that the bike race is easier than the run, he urges himself not to forget about just how challenging the bike race is. Though he has always finished at Leadville, Ryan shares his DNF stories from other races. Next, they discuss Leadman, the challenge beyond all other challenges. What makes Leadville so unique, Ryan says, is the friendships and relationships one builds there. Everyone who participates has such an interesting story, which only adds to the energy of the race. Cole and Ryan were both furloughed from their positions at Life Time in 2020. Ryan took this as an opportunity to start his own coaching business, which he considers now to be a blessing in disguise. The clientele he had previously built really helped him establish his new path. As the episode wraps up, Ryan shares advice for Leadville family members to help them make it to the finish line at any event this upcoming summer. To avoid injuries at all costs, consistency and forming good habits now is key. To Ryan, the word Leadville evokes the memories of family reunions, fun summer nights and his tribe. Thanks for tuning in! Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe, and we hope to see you on the line in August!

For those that watched Eco-Challenge on Amazon Prime you will definitely be familiar with both Travis and his father Mark, the incredible duo exemplified what we know as the hero’s journey and a thirst for living fully. Travis is a professional athlete completing over 120 ultra endurance events in 17 countries, he is a speaker, author and coach. He is the author of The Ultra Mindset: An Endurance Champion's 8 Core Principles for Success in Business, Sports, and Life. He set a record for the 2013 Leadman series epic endurance event consisting of a combination of five trail running and mountain biking events held in Leadville, Colorado over the course of two months each summer, in a combined record time, of 36:20 covering 282.3 miles 10,200 feet up in the Rocky Mountains. I was watching the show, Eco-Challenge and heard the narrator Bear Grillz tell the audience of this Travis Macy guy…. Who decided not to participate with the goal of finishing in a top position, Instead he wanted to do the 500km (or 310 mile, 10 day race of travelling by foot, kayak, horse, swimmimg, mountain climbing and mountain biking with his father Mark a long standing endurance athlete himself who has early onset Alzheimer’s. In this episode we get into the details of maintaining a love for living fully, by doing. By having a respect and appreciation for the journey that is life not by hoping for a submissive world that will cater to our needs. I am going to quote my friend Ian Bigford who has been on the podcast before and will be back on soon, he sent me a quote from an Ancient Indian Parable… which I think aligns with the courage that both Travis and his Father exude in life: A man wants to walk across the land, but the land is covered in thorns. He has two options, one is to pave a road - to tame all of nature into his compliance. The other is to make sandals. In this episode we talk about your relationship with the difficult things in life… developing a love for living, meaning a love for the journey that has both darkness and light, we talk about how you think your way through challenge while your body is so depleted you cannot even feed yourself. Of course, we conclude with a discussion about Mark Macy, Travis’s dad, who again if you need a hit of inspiration to keep going, check out the eco-challenge on Amazon Prime and see the heroism that we discuss in this episode. Dion has received a lot of press for his book which is " the heartwarming story of Gobi, a stray dog he found on a race across the eponymous desert" which is something you need to check out, but he is also an incredibly accomplished athlete who has taken on some of the hardest challenges in the sport of ultra running. He jumped all in on this sport by running a handful of Stage Races around the world including the Marathon Des Sables and the Gobi March. In 2018 he finished second place in the Triple Crown of 200s, all three of Candice Burt's remarkable two mile races. Then in 2019, after winning the Delirious 200 miler in Australia, he decided to up the ante by participating in the "Leadman" and the "Grand Slam of Ultrarunning in same summer. That means he raced every endurance event in Leadville (both running and mountain biking) plus four of the biggest 100 milers. That has to go down as two of the craziest years an athlete has had in ultra running! In this episode we get into all of those stories as we explore Dion's growth both mentally and emotionally through pushing his limits. What drives him? What makes him persevere? How have his experiences shaped him into who he now is? Excited to share this one and honored to get to talk with Dion! Now age 61 (40 years after her victory) her goal was to run within 40 minutes of her winning time at the 2019 Boston Marathon. In April at the Boston Marathon the 1984 Olympic marathon champion wore a similar singlet to honor her 1979 win and crossed the finish line in 3:04, exceeding her goal. “To be here, 40 years later and being able to run, let alone being able to run a marathon, I feel blessed,” she said in a Runner’s World article. In October Camille Herron won the International Association of Ultrarunners 24-Hour World Championship. She covered 167.8 miles in 24 hours and led the U.S. to an overall team victory. Earlier this year in January she survived a near fatal rollover car accident and came back less than two weeks later to win the Tarawera 100 Miler in Rotorua, New Zealand in a new course record of 17:20:52.World Best 24-hour Run for Female Runner photo credit: @jetlineactionphoto First Woman to Win Big’s Backyard Ultra Maggie Guterl became the last runner standing in Big’s Backyard Ultra race by running the same 4.2 mile trail loop for 60 hours. The Colorado native ran 250 miles during that time to becoming the first woman to win the race that rewards the person who can run for the longest amount of time. A Runner’s World article quoted her as saying, “When I finished, a woman came up to me and said, ‘I didn’t want to tell you this, but you were running for all of the women and an entire gender,’” Guterl said. “That was in my head the whole race and it was so surreal when I was the last one standing.” Fastest 10 Marathons in 10 Days Mike Wardian set a Guinesses World Record for the fastest 10 marathons in 10 days with an average time of less than 3 hours for each marathon. He also holds the record for the World Marathon Challenge with the fastest 7 marathons in 7 continents in 7 days. New Course Record at Western States Ultrarunning star Jim Walmsley maintained his Western States winning streak when he broke his own course record in June. Running 100 miles from Squaw Valley to Auburn, California, Walmsley finished in 14:09, breaking his own course record by more than 20 minutes. His roommate Jared Hazen also came in under the course record in 14:26. Walmsley also had some other amazing achievements this year by qualifying for the Olympic Marathon Trials in January, breaking the 50-mile record in May, and winning the 42K at the World Mountain Running Championships in November. Nick Butter became the first person in the world to run a marathon in every country. This was an unparalleled feat of logistical and physical endurance. You can hear our interview with him on episode #304. Notable and Interesting News One of the biggest gear trends this year was the evolution of the Nike Vaporfly shoe with the curved carbon fiber plate. There has been a lot of buzz about the Zoom Vaporfly 4% and this year they released the Next% with 15% more foam in the midsole. After the shoe was released this year it quickly became the fastest shoe on Strava, clocking up an average pace of 5:02 /km (8:06/mile). 32.7C (90.1 degrees F) was the temperature during the women’s marathon at the World Championships in Doha. Twenty-eight athletes pulled out in total because of the extreme heat. 1 billion pounds is The London Marathon’s overall fundraising total since its inception in 1981. Their motto this year was “Thanks a billion!” We appreciate everyone who donated as we raised money for a MTA forever forest for the John Muir Trust in Scotland. Cynthia Arnold, age 35, of Montana ran a time of 3:11 (7:20 min/mile or 4:32/km pace) at the Missoula Marathon while pushing a triple stroller with her three kids (a total weight of 185 pounds). The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency banned Alberto Salazar, the famous track coach of the Nike Oregon Project and former marathon champion, for four years. The USADA says Salazar was involved with trafficking testosterone, infused a prohibited amount of L-carnitine, and tried to tamper with doping controls. Mary Cain comes out with allegations about the questionable coaching techniques of Alberto Salazar related to weight shaming. This resulted in her dealing with some serious issues with depression and quitting the Nike Oregon Project team. A bright side to what she went through means that it is bringing to light problems with abusive coaches and sponsorship deals. More athletes are talking about mental health and eating disorders including Amelia Boone who openly shared about her long-time eating disorder and the treatment that she’s gone through. Another Nike related controversy that was brought to light was their pregnancy clause in contracts with women athletes. Alysia Montano shared an issue few knew about. Female athletes were being punished for getting pregnant. Montaño said that when she told Nike that she wanted to have a baby, the brand told her it would pause her sponsorship deal and stop paying her. She left Nike to sign with Asics, who she said also threatened to stop paying her during her recovery after childbirth. Other athletes including Allyson Felix and Kara Goucher have also spoken out about what they experienced. Nike has said that it would waive performance-pay reductions for 12 months for athletes “who decide to have a baby” and will add terms that reinforce the policy for female athletes into contracts. Shalane Flannigan announces her decision to retire from elite running. Gabriele Grunewald, pro middle distance runner, who trained and raced through treatment for a rare cancer, died in June at the age of 32 in her home state of MN. She inspired fans with her message of hope and resilience and that it was okay to struggle. She is quoted in Outside Online as saying, “In my previous cancer experiences, it wasn’t easy but I tried my best and I was able to do so many things that I would not have done had I just given up on my life when it was hard. So I guess my message is that it’s okay to struggle, but it’s not okay to give up on yourself or your dreams. My story is about cancer, but anybody has tough stuff in their life.” Her message and the mantra “Brave like Gabe” continues to inspire runners to be their best and her husband Justin plans to continue her foundation Brave Like Gabe. photo credit: bravelikegabe.org Kara Goucher debuted in trail races with the Leadville Marathon in Colorado. Bouts of vomiting from altitude sickness made the Olympian consider dropping out but she pushed through for a fifth place finish and first in her AG with a time of 3:54. She calls it the “hardest thing I ever accomplished.” The movie “Brittany Runs a Marathon” was released this year. It’s a drama/comedy about a woman who gets a wake up call when she realizes how unhealthy her body and lifestyle have become. With a motivation to lose weight she starts running with the eventual goal of completing the NYC Marathon. The Bizarre and Unbelievable 31-year-old Travis Kauffman from Colorado was trail running when he was attacked by a mountain lion. He managed to fight back and killed the lion in self-defense. The attack required 20 plus stitches to puncture wounds on his face, legs, and arms. He gave an interview 10 days after the attack and said that he’s recovering well, has been running three times since the incident, and has been back to the scene of the attack. In June a trail runner was attacked and gored by bison in a Utah State Park where he has run hundreds of times. One animal impaled Kyler Bourgeous with its horns and left hoof prints on his back and head. “I thought I was gonna die right there” he said. “I thought my situation was just a freak accident,” Bourgeous told The Washington Post on Monday night. “But apparently, they’re a lot more aggressive than I ever thought.” After recovering from a collapsed lung and cracked rib he worked up the nerve to return a few months later bringing his girlfriend Kayleigh Davis along for a hike. Unfortunately she became the park’s second bison attack of the year. An enormous animal turned on her and charged, throwing her about 15 feet in the air. Although in tremendous pain, she tried not to move or make any noise once she hit the ground. “He was hanging over me, sniffing me for a minute, and he was digging like he was about to charge again,” Davis said. When Bourgeous found her, Davis was bleeding from her left thigh, where the bison had gored her. She had also broken her right ankle, ruining her plans to run in a spring half-marathon. She was airlifted to a local hospital. Kyler said he’s not sure he’ll ever return to the park. Caitlin Keen, age 26, was running along Fort Worth’s Trinity Trails when a pit bull mix attacked her. The dog repeatedly jumped on her and bit her on the back and arms before a passerby was able to rush to her aid and subdue the dog. The attack caused injuries requiring 21 stitches in six spots. After healing up Keen stayed focused on her goal races which includes looking forward to the upcoming US Olympic Trial marathon. A running club in Philadelphia helped chase down an alleged thief near the University of Pennsylvania during their midday run. Runner’s World reports that the Annenberg Lunchtime Running Group saw a “very fast man” sprint by them, “probably running a 7:15 pace,” said group member Kyle Cassidy. But they quickly realized the man had allegedly stolen a phone and laptop. “We all looked at each other and sprinted off after the person,” Cassidy said. Other members in the running club gave chase and the running group tracked the man down on the streets of Philadelphia. The chase ended when the suspect ran into the path of responding University of Pennsylvania officers. “We heard the first officer yell to the other officers, ‘It’s a running club,’” Cassidy said. “‘This guy tried to run from the running club.’ People were shocked when Harvard University junior Kieran Tuntivate managed to win two races in this year’s Ivy League Heptagonal Championships, despite an injury that left him with a large open wound on the bottom of his foot. Tuntivate, age 22, was in the first lap of a 3,000 meter race at an indoor meet when another runner stepped on his foot causing him to lose a shoe. Runner’s World reports that Tuntivate, who’s been running competitively since age 12, said he only had two options in the moment: stop to recover his shoe and likely lose the race or keep running and risk an injury. He decided to keep going and he ended up winning the race without his left shoe. But the victory came at a bloody and painful price. “It felt kind of natural at first, but I kind of expected it to start hurting eventually with the really abrasive surface of the track,” Tuntivate told ABC News in an interview. “Around 2,000 meters — about two-thirds into the race — is when it really started to hurt.” Tuntivate said he lost a lot of skin by running on what “felt like sandpaper.” He said his doctor compared the skin loss to what one experiences after a third-degree burn, but he didn’t let it stop him and managed to win in the 5,000 meters event the following day. Anna McNuff of the UK took on a huge adventure by running nearly the whole of Britain barefoot! She posted this on Facebook, “A total of 2,352 MILES RUN (equivalent to 90 marathons) from The Shetland Islands to London, in my bare feet.” photo credit: Anna McNuff The Inspirational Ernie Lacroix celebrated his 100th birthday at the Cowtown 5K in Fort Worth, Texas. This was the 20th year in a row that Lacroix completed the 5K race. Lacroix ran with his family and friends under the team name Smoky’s Posse, named after the plane he flew during World War II. Lacroix flew 76 missions in a B-25 Bomber over Italy and France during the war, earning him the Flying Cross medal. “I have no idea of what prompted me to give the Cowtown a go,” Lacroix told Runner’s World. “I knew beforehand that I didn’t have a chance to win anything, but all the people obviously enjoying the competition looked like fun, so I gave it a go. I can’t think of any other reason.” Running (or walking, as he refers to his not-so-brisk pace) was not something Lacroix has always done, though he did exercise a lot while in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Now, at 100, he says he is “in the worst shape of (his) life at the present time”—but he is looking to see what he can do to change that. photo credit: Rick Irving It’s tough enough to push one child in a running stroller but imagine pushing five children. 37 year old Chad Kempel did just that at the Surf City Marathon in February. The father of seven pushed his quintuplets to the finish line in 5:45 and then continued for a total of 27.3 miles to honor the amount of weeks that his wife carried the quintuplets before they were born prematurely. When the babies were born in 2018, they each only weighed three pounds, and had to be immediately treated with oxygen and feeding tubes to survive. The quintuplets’ fragile health conditions required them to stay in the intensive care unit for 73 days, Kempel said in a Runner’s World article. “It was a long, scary pregnancy, and even after they were born, we couldn’t rest. Finally, we were able to take them home, but then our schedules just got busier. It’s been a long, crazy year, between parenting and working and finding time to run.” To train for the Surf City Marathon, Kempel woke up each morning at 4:00, put on his running clothes plus a headlamp and reflective gear, and then left the house at 4:30 to run. During the race he had to deal with making sure the babies weren’t hungry. He said, “My biggest concern was how many diapers I’d need to change.” Luckily, the dad had the genius idea to dress each baby in two diapers, so when one was soiled, it could be quickly ripped off and the other could slide in place. “It was smooth sailing.” photo credit: Chad Kempel 49 year old Dave Mackey was an accomplished ultra runner until a fall while running left him with a tibia broken in eight places. Due to complications and continual pain he chose to have a below the knee amputation. Since then he’s been building back his running and completed the Leadman series last year. This year he ran the Leadville Trail 100 in 25 hours, 54 minutes, roughly six hours slower than his pre-injury 2014 time. Mackey says in Outside Online, “I just want to get out there and make the most of it. I’m more appreciative now of every individual run or ride. Or skiing with my kids. It feels so good. With the accident I had, I could’ve died.” There’s a new film out about his story called Leadman. British ultra runner Jasmin Paris wins a 268 mile race at the Montane Spine Race (which traverses from England into Scotland on rugged terrain). She was the overall winner by over 15 hours with a time of in 83 hours 12 minutes. There were 126 other athletes who also battled rain and 50 MPH winds. But she only stopped for 7 hours total to eat, sleep, and pump breast milk as she is still nursing her baby girl. All athletes were required to carry their own supplies and navigate which adds to the challenge. The IRONMAN World Championship is really the cherry on top for me this year and I am considering it more of a "victory lap". I qualified for Kona at IM Boulder this year and then the following week proceeded to start the Leadman race series (5 trail events over 3 months ending with the 100 mile run in Leadville, Colorado back in August). Been a long and busy year so I am excited to just be there in Kona with family and friends supporting. What is your favorite career IRONMAN memory so far Drinking beers on State Street with family/friends the night before qualifying at Wisconsin back in 2013. That and running down Ali'I Drive. So much emotion and feelings in those last couple hundred yards. Is this your first time competing in Kona and if no how many other times have you done so? No. This will be my 2nd time back in Kona, hoping for some redemption this time around. If someone were watching that is new to the sport, what would you tell them is the coolest thing about being a triathlete and competing in this venue. I think there is something to be said about sharing this course (and the day) with the world's best athletes. Coolest thing about this venue...everything you see on TV, the magic and mystique of the island is so true. What do you think is the hardest thing about doing an IRONMAN? Like training for any endurance sport/event, knowing when to hold back to stave off injury and/or burnout. The hardest thing about actually executing the IRONMAN race is pulling everything together (pacing, nutrition, race strategy, etc.). For me, It's HOW you manage those variables and unknowns that are thrown at you on race day that separate you from having a great race to an okay race.   Niki Leo What are you most excited about in competing in Kona?  I am most excited to experience the legend course, to personally feel the heat, humidity, and winds that are so infamous.  I am also excited to see in person, at one time, many of my heroes in the sport.  Triathlon is genuinely one of the only sports in the world where you get to compete on the same field of play as the professionals...and do that with all of them is going to be amazing.  I am truly excited about just being able to have this opportunity. What is your favorite career Ironman so far?  That is a hard one...Louisville 2018 where I qualified will probably always be special because I realized a dream come true.  However, my first Ironman--Arizona in 2011--will probably always be my favorite because my love for the sport was all so pure then-- a lesson in ignorance is bliss. The celebratory feeling that I could actually do something like a full Ironman...there is always that doubt...and then you cross that finish line and you cannot believe it...the feeling is so indescribable unless you've done it.  It is also the only time I ever felt that way...after finishing the first, knowing you could do it, the others after that were amazing but I knew I could finish because I had before. Is this your first time competing in Kona?  Yes.  I have always wanted to qualify and came close a couple of times however, in 2018 after my first DNF (ever) in Ironman Boulder--which was supposed to be my 11th IM--I did IM Canada (which turned out to be #11). Destroyed about the DNF at Boulder, I registered for Louisville (12) to get onto the Legacy list.  Well...I finished second (missing first by 6 seconds) and qualified! If someone were new to the sport, what would I tell them is the best thing about being a triathlete and competing at this venue?  For sure, triathlon has saved me in so many ways...it has given me something to live for and something to always work towards.  It has given me the feeling few will ever experience in their lifetime--that feeling of wanting so badly to stop and yet, feeling the most alive I ever feel.  It has given me direction when I have been lost--depression, eating disorders, cancer.  It has given me determination and grit to endure--pain, injuries (which all have come as result of getting hit by cars...multiple times).  It has given me a family and friends that I would not otherwise have in CO since I moved here not knowing anyone.  It has given me perspective that I'm human--changing and adapting everyday is required to lead a balanced life.  The venue itself will cause you to doubt yourself, to face failure, to determine what your priorities in life are, and it will make you feel more alive than anything else in this world if you dare take yourself there. What do I think is the hardest part of Ironman?  The time it takes.  The energy it takes at times.  The fear you have to overcome to test yourself.  And to do it for YOU.  That first one is always about YOU...then you "drink the kool aid" and for some reason, it changes.  I have a love/hate relationship with Ironman because of this.  I think the family and culture it creates can be amazing but I have also seen it destroy people.  It can be so intimidating so I think the hardest thing is not to lose yourself and don't lose sight of what Ironman is in your life...that is, it is a hobby/sport you enjoy and unless you are a pro, it does not define you. Endurance News: PTO buying Ironman from Wanda Follow up discussion on the Professional Triathlon Organisation (PTO) have announced that they have approached WANDA with the intent to acquire Ironman and its assets. Today's episode of the Eat for Endurance Podcast continues my Athlete Nutrition Profile Series with speaker, author, coach, and endurance athlete, Travis Macy. You name the sport, he's probably done it – and maybe even all in a single event! You will finish this episode feeling inspired to seek out your own next big adventure in life and/or in sport, even if you are not an ultra-athlete yourself. A little more background on Travis - he has finished over 120 ultra endurance events in 17 countries, including setting a record in 2013 for Leadman (an epic endurance event consisting of a trail running marathon, 50-mile mountain bike race, Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race, 10k road run, and Leadville 100 Run), all while raising two young children with his wife in Evergreen, Colorado. He is a former classroom teacher with a Master's degree in Education, runs a college consulting business with his wife, coaches private clients to finish a variety of endurance events, and wrote the awesome book The Ultra Mindset: An Endurance Champion's 8 Core Principles for Success in Business, Sports, and Life. I read it back in 2015, after Travis and I met at an Endurance conference, and thoroughly appreciated the important and practical advice that he has gleaned from his years of professional racing and how it applies to other areas of life. I particularly enjoyed our exploration of how his principles can be applied to one's nutrition! Next week, Travis is setting off on his next big racing adventure – Eco Challenge Fiji – which is “the ultimate expedition race in which international teams of athletes will race non-stop, 24 hours a day, across hundreds of miles of rugged backcountry terrain complete with mountains, jungles and oceans.” The Challenge will air on Amazon Prime in 2020 – so stay tuned if you'd like to watch! This week's guest is ultrarunner, race director and fellow "dude from Iowa who moved to Colorado" Don Reichelt. Over the last few years Don has really pushed his limits in the ultrarunning world. Through his experiences in various 100 mile races, he learned, developed and adapted into the fantastic (and fast!!) runner he is today. All in preparation for his biggest challenge yet- Big's Backyard Ultra- a sadistic race in Tennessee that has redefined the phrase "battle of wills". In this event, runners must complete a 4.1 mile loop every hour until their is only one person left standing (or limping, or stumbling). It's truly a battle of self as every person but one chooses to pull their self out as hours turn into days. It's a race for a person trying to find their limits, which is exactly what Don is trying to do. In this episode we chat about his journey. How and why he took in Leadman as a relatively inexperienced ultrarunner, what led him to his third place finish at last year's brutally hot Badwater, and his training plan for his upcoming Big's Backyard Ultra. Hope you guys enjoy the show! I really loved hanging with Don and am honored he shared his stories with us! Travis Macy is an endurance athlete, adventurer, mountain hunter, coach and the author of the excellent book "The Ultra Mindset." When it comes to taking on incredibly difficult events in the mountains, there's only a small few with the experiences Travis has. He's competed in a variety of endurance events all over the globe and in 2013, he set a record for the Leadman, the iconic series in which racers compete in all Leadville ultra-endurance races over the course of one summer. Whether it's running, biking, paddling, snowshoeing, ski-mountaineering, or orienteering, Travis has done it all. He's also an incredible coach who uses his excellent philosophies to guide all sorts of athletes to success. Using his many adventures, Travis is able to express his stoic mindset better than almost anyone I have ever met. "The Ultra Mindset" is exists and is authentically created by anyone who is willing to push their limits, both physically and mentally. On this episode we chat about this mentality. How does adventure help develop it, how does one elevate these lessons in life outside of racing, and why is a fellowship with nature so important? We also hear about his recent adventures taking on the epic Grand Traverse ski from Crested Butte to Aspen and how his partner pushed through after breaking his elbow. Travis also shares a bit about his experiences hunting with and filming an episode of Greg Mchale's Wild Yukon. Can't wait for you guys to listen! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did! Also, truly make sure to check out Travis's book "The Ultra Mindset". It is a wonderful combination of adventure stories, overcoming adversity and reflections on the lessons he learned along the way. Definitely, one of the best ultrarunning books out there! Imagine yourself on mile 5 of an Ironman marathon and you feel great. You are on goal pace. "It's all coming together, this is THE race I've been waiting for". Then you look at your heart rate and it's 10 beats higher than what it should be and all of a sudden you don't feel as good and you slow down and your dreams are left to fade away for another day. Sadly, this is common series of events for athletes who rely too heavily, because they have never trained any other way, on that external piece of equipment called the watch. Data is good, heck yes, but detaching from data to get to know thyself proves far more valuable when it comes down to pivotal moments in training and racing. By practicing letting go of the watch in training we create space to develop a skillful awareness of our bodies and minds that lifts the limits that numbers can impose. Again data is good, it helps us get a sense of where we are in our pace and exertion levels but it's not the end all and be all of training. Envision going out for a workout and knowing, without question, your heart rate within a beat, pace within seconds and sustained wattage based on your breath and perceived exertion through heightened body awareness. How might that benefit you in a race when your bike computer fails or your watch battery dies? BJ was introduced to this first hand from our guest today and has relied on it many times when his bike computer has failed and his watch battery has died. In fact, BJ's regular practice is to race without a watch and his times continue to get faster and faster. Lucho came into our lives a decade ago on a plane ride home from Ironman Arizona. He struck up a conversation with BJ and from that moment on he was a changed athlete. Lucho soon became BJ's coach and has remained his mentor for many years. Lucho is an accomplished athlete, he was a very active kid. He ran in high school which led to a scholarship to college which led to a unique twist which led to travels which led to a hurricane which led to his introduction to triathlon. In 2000 Lucho was the top amateur at the Ironman World Championship in Kona, HI and 16th overall. It was after this incredible accomplishment that he turned pro. He's a multi-time course record breaker in the sport of triathlon and ultra running. He utilizes his athletic experiences, especially the crummy ones, to self-reflect and learn so that he can rise back up to the next challenge as a better-equipped athlete and human. He is constantly reinventing himself and most recently he's been hitting the track to see what kind of speed he is capable of at this point in his life. Lucho is so transparent, he's really an open book and I love that about him. We've known him for ten years and even though this is the second time I've met him in person I feel like I've been right by his side through times of joy and otherwise as we've followed his journey through his blog and by listening to him on his Endurance Planet podcast. This conversation is most definitely one to listen to a few times, there is so much gold in here for athletes from the traditional training standpoint but also in the development of self-awareness and mental strength. Thank you so much for your support, we couldn't do it with you all. We have a goal of 100 reviews on Apple Podcast by the end of August so if you enjoy today's show please go and leave a few sentences in support of the YTP. Sit back, unplug and get ready to really plug into an awesome conversation with an accomplished athlete, coach, podcaster, dad, husband, and cake artist.

If you listened to some of our other podcast you’ll know I’m doing the Leadman series of events this year. So aside of what we hope to provide for our listener interest, I have my own personal agenda that is really digging all the info I’m learning about tackling this 5 part event. It’s been extra exciting to have the founders of the Leadville Race Series, nutritionist, sports psychologist, coaches, and today my buddy Don Reichelt, a recent Leadman finisher and endurance coach on the podcast. In this episode we’re going to dig into the sport of endurance for those that are looking to get into it or step up their distance a bit. Don has been racing ultras for a couple years now, but tackled Leadman without even being a mountain biker until about 6 months before it, yet still rocked it with style. That sounds crazy, but I’m sure many of you have had a similar entry of diving in head first, then figuring it out in route.  Links http://www.runwithdon.com/ Leadville Race Series Accomplishments Leadman Finisher-2015 Tunnel Hill 100 – 4th place overall, 2016 Antelope Canyon 50 Miler – 3rd overall, 2017

Travis is an ultra endurance athlete, author, speaker and high-performance consultant. Travis won the Leadman Series and has the fastest known traverse of Zion National Park. He’s competed in Abu Dhabi, China and Australia and many other parts of the world. His book is titled “The Ultra Mindset: An Endurance Champion’s 8 Core Principles for Success in Business, Sports, and Life.” We’re going to dive into four of those principles and a few other topics in today’s interview. Let's connect:  Website | Facebook | Twitter About Your Host Jim Harshaw My name is Jim Harshaw. And I know where you’re at. You’re working hard and qualified for what you do but you aren’t getting what you want. You have plans on getting to the C-suite or launching a business but ultimate success seems as far away today as ever. You’re at the right place because you can get there from here. And I can help. Who I Am I’m a speaker, coach and former Division I All American wrestler that helps motivated former athletes reach their full potential by getting clarity on their what they really want and taking aggressive action to lead their ideal life not just despite their prior failures but because of them. I’m a husband and father of four. And I’m a serial entrepreneur. I’ve launched multiple successful businesses as well as the obligatory failed one. I’ve been the executive director of a non-profit and have raised millions of dollars. I’ve worked in sales. I’ve even been a Division I head coach. While I was born in a blue-collar home I have spent my life surrounded by Olympians, CEO’s and millionaires. Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” I’ve been lucky. I’ve learned the habits of successful people and guess what. You’re just like them. I know because I know your type. You’re programmed for hard work, which is a prerequisite for success, but you’ve never been shown how to use what you know to create the life you want with the tools you have. I will show you how. Why You are Here You've worked hard to achieve greatness. You’ve set goals and maybe even set records. You’ve definitely failed and you’ve at some point found yourself questioning if you were on the right track. You need to understand this: You are far more prepared to succeed than those who’ve not tried, competed, struggled and overcome like you have. That’s the value of your education as someone who aims high. You are prepared to be as successful as your wildest dreams will allow. Here I will teach you, with the help of brilliant minds that have been shaped by failure, struggle and adversity, to be who you want to be. I sense that you want this because you have read this far.
