In this episode, we speak to elite ultrarunner and author Damian Hall. While most teens were experimenting with smoking and drinking, Damian was already running cross-country races. He shares how his journey began with a half marathon in his hometown of Bath, eventually leading him to some of the world's toughest ultramarathons, including the notorious Barkley Marathons. We explore why Damian believes ultrarunning is “easier” than it seems, why he prefers tea over coffee, and what makes the fifth loop of the Barkley so brutal. Insightful, inspiring, and refreshingly honest, this is a conversation every runner should hear.About Vikas Singh:Vikas Singh, an MBA from Chicago Booth, worked at Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, APGlobale, and Reliance before coming up with the idea of democratizing fitness knowledge and helping beginners get on a fitness journey. In this YBOC microdose, a hark back to my inspirational chat with ultrarunner and climate activist Damian Hall, who dispensed his wisdom about how to keep up the slog - advice that's as useful for changing the world as it is for running up that hill. Sorting climate change is the definition of a marathon, not a sprint. It particularly feels that way right now. What we need is ENDURANCE, and plenty of it - and the right perspective to keep on keeping on.  For the full chat, check out episode 23 here. If you like the show please do consider chipping in a couple of quid over at http://www.patreon.com/yourbrainonclimate. Kia ora e te whānau. Jasmin Paris was rocketed into the wider consciousness when she became the first woman to finish Barkley Marathons, with 99 seconds to spare. Ironically, for a race that eschewed publicity for so long, the photos of Paris sending the final 100 metres or so to the yellow gate are arguably more famous than the Barkley itself.  Whilst this may be Jasmin's best known achievement, it's far from her only one. Spine winner, Bob Graham Round holder, fell running champion, senior lecturer in veterinary science, Mother and partner. Jasmin's life is full. Ali and Matt spoke to Jasmin about all this, and Green Runners, the organisation she co-founded with Damian Hall to advocate for, and address climate issues related to the sport of running and the wider world. Fresh off supporting many pals on the Winter Spine races and indeed test running a brand-new race to be introduced on the Spine he's s in usual cavalier mood. First, we find out a switch up in his sponsorship as he moves away from his historical association with Inov8 and over to something less normal. Then it's a crusade through a whole heap of stuff he's been up to and involved in. As you can imagine nothing sits still for this fella so we've much to discuss and muse upon. National Running Show appearances, training updates, upcoming races and plans. The big news, for us anyway, the revelation that we'll get an oppo to meet the man himself in Conniston come the end of July! We cover 'controlling the fade', the fade of what though? Damian Hall is a British Ultra Runner. He was winner of The Spine Race in 2023, has been on the podium at the Dragons Back and recorded a top 5 finish at UTMB. He didn't get into running until his 30s and did his first marathon dressed as a toilet. He coaches Jasmin Paris and made his debut at the Barkley Marathons in 2023. This is a fascinating conversation about the mental side of ultra running and why running makes him feel alive. You'll hear:06:00 Damian talks about doing his first marathon dressed as a toilet... It was for charity. 09:00 We talk about Damian being captivated by The Spine Race... Did he feel as captivated by Barkley Marathons?12:00 We talk about the mindset of getting to a start line and why Damian doesn't get hung up about spreadsheets. 14:00 What's harder, preparing mentally or recovering mentally from a huge challenge/race. We talk about post-adventure blues and almost mourning once it's done. "I sometimes feel quite lost without it."17:00 Damian explains what some of the side-effects are after doing something like The Spine Race (approx 3.5 days.) Including night sweats, swelling in the lower legs and feet, soreness and fatigue.20:00 Did Damian get the post-event blues after The Barkley Marathons? Damian talks about what it's like being in the races, rather than tracking them. 25:00 How did it work out between Damian and Jasmin Paris, with Damian being Jasmin's coach... but Jasmin having previously done the Barkley Marathons and Damian not.30:00 What has Damian learnt from Jasmin? 32:00 What has John Kelly taught Damian? 33:00 Damian gives some really interesting thoughts about whether he needs to be more angry to succeed. 35:00 Doing the media rounds the morning after winning The Spine Race. What's it really like doing that?37:00 When Damian says 'Running makes me feel alive'. What does he mean? "Sometimes in Western Society, we are safe, life is predictable and it takes us away from our primal beings and for me I need 2-3 times a year to press those same buttons that make me feel human. There's a magnificent simplicity to it all. But that's one of the hard parts about the comedown afterwards."43:00 What small things can we do within the endurance community to be more mindful about the planet? 45:00 Will Damian return to the Barkley Marathons?Find out more about this week's guest:Damian Hall InstagramDamian Hall websiteLike what you heard?Let me know! Each year since 1986, in Frozen Head State Park Tenessee, a race has taken place that teeters on the brink of being impossible to finish. An enigma of an event that eschews marketing, GPS tracking, and largely even race fees, and has a reputation as a serious contender for the title of toughest race on Earth. In this episode, we talk to 3 runners who recently put in outstanding performances at the event. John Kelly was already one of the tiny group of people to ever finish the race and this year joined the even smaller group of those to finish it 2 times or more. Jasmin Paris put in the best performance by any female athlete in the history of the race, and Damian Hall managed to get all the way out onto loop 4 in his first-ever Barkley. The remarkable true story of an unrivalled journey to recreate the greatest run in film history: 15,621 miles, five-times across the United States. 'Rob Pope has made his name revelling in challenges that range from the unconventional to the extraordinary.' BBC News Becoming Forrest is the incredible story of Englishman Rob Pope, a veterinarian who left his job in pursuit of a dream - to become the first person ever to complete the epic run undertaken by one of Hollywood's most beloved characters, Forrest Gump. After his momma urged him "to do one thing in life that made a difference", he flew to Alabama, put on his running shoes, and sped off into the wilderness. His remarkable journey covered 15,600 miles, the distance from the North to the South Pole and a third of the way back. Over a grueling 18 months, braving injuries, blizzards, forest fires and deadly wildlife, he crossed the United States five times. During one of the most turbulent periods in recent American history, Rob immersed himself in American life. His time on the open road saw him forever changed, trying to make that difference, in the process of Becoming Forrest. This is a tale of one man who just wanted to make a difference. "Rob Pope is a real-life Hollywood superstar!' - Dean Karnazes, author of Ultramarathon Man "'A simply staggering feat of endurance and storytelling. The tenacity, curiosity and humour of Rob's amazing journey comes through in every page of this wonderful tale about people, discovery and a very, very long road."-Mark Beaumont, author of The Man Who Cycled the World "'With tons of humor Rob Pope takes us into one of the greatest running journeys. Lace up your shoes and enjoy this excellent book!"-Kilian Jornet, runner and author of Above the Clouds "'What Rob has achieved both physically and mentally is mind-blowing, a true feat of human endurance."-Tom Evans, Ultrarunner "'A very readable and entertaining travelogue about an effing extraordinary run."-Damian Hall, author of In It for the Long Run: Breaking Records and Getting FKT "'Most of us watched that scene and thought: cute. Pope watched it and thought: could that be possible? . Like Gump, Pope also experienced what it was like to drift through America when history rears its ugly head. . He brightens people's day. Pope is serious about running, but, just like Gump, he doesn't overthink it. Why should someone run? 'Because you want to,' he says."-The Observer "'A stirring chronicle . What quickly becomes striking - on top of the extreme distance of his runs, often 'forty miles every day without rest' - is Pope's innate curiosity and fascination with the world around him. . This is sure to inspire distance runners as well as those interested in a hearty slice of Americana."- Publishers Weekly starred review

Over the festive period, whilst many people were packing in mince pies and wrapping presents, the runners about to take part in #BritainsMostBrutal race were busy thinking about the 268-miles of non-stop racing waiting for them in the new year. And that's just those on the full-length edition. Across all 5 race classes, there were over 500 runners passing a nervous New Year thinking about the Pennine Way. This seemed like the perfect time to call them up and try and distill a little of that pre-race tension into a special edition of Everything Endurance. Damian Hall is a British trail runner with several Fastest Known Times to his name, including a famed record-breaking 261-mile run on the UK's Pennine Way in 2020. A former journalist, he has become equally well known for his environmental activism, qualities that come together in his new book We Can't Run Away From This: Racing to Improve Running's Footprint In Our Climate Emergency. In this interview with Tony Fletcher, Damian discusses why our outdoor lifestyle choices - including but not limited to running - are frequently, if unintentionally, bad for the planet, what we can do about it, and why we should stay positive about having a positive impact in the long run. Tony then reports on his research into the clothing/shoe companies he purchases from, and reflects on his own dietary and travel imprints from running. The show ends with the new Dear Boys song ‘Action', written about the climate emergency and coincidentally released as a 7” single the same day as this show. Specific subjects discussed:The three main components of our athletic environmental footprint: Gear/Kit, Diet, Travel. Why shoe companies should make less shoes, and why we should buy less of them and repair/reuse/recycle more of them. Why Race Directors need to stop giving away unwanted shirts, medals, and other paraphernalia. The responsibility that ‘Sponbassadencers' (© Damian Hall) like himself have towards educating their followings – and also to the companies that give them free gear. Why he became a Full Annoying Vegan (© Damian Hall) and how switching from a carnivorous diet to a plant-based diet can reduce our carbon footprint from food by a staggering 70% - or approx. 18% of our overall carbon footprint. Why he stopped flying to races. But might still do so.Why it is better to embrace hypocrisy than do nothing. Why he picked up litter/trash on his Pennine Way FKT in 2020 (and on his failed attempt to reclaim that title in 2022).And how you can get three of his books for one British steak.Damian Hall can be found at ultradamo.com and his social media via https://linktr.ee/ultra_damo'We Can't Run Away From This' is published by Adventure Books https://www.adventurebooks.com/products/we-cant-run-away-from-this which also published his book 'In It For The Long Run' https://www.adventurebooks.com/products/in_it_for_the_long_runThe film Underdog about his 2020 Pennine Way FKT is at imdb. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt13968750/Company policies discussed by Tony:Patagonia: Worn Wear and 'Our Impact' https://wornwear.patagonia.com/ https://www.patagonia.com/our-footprint/Vibram 'Sustainable Way' https://us.vibram.com/sustainable-way-page.htmlInov-8 'Sustainability' https://www.inov-8.com/us/sustainabilityAltra Running 'Our Values' https://www.altrarunning.com/who-we-are/our-values.htmlEnda Sportswear 'Social Impact' https://www.endasportswear.com/pages/impactFeetures 'Giving Back' https://feetures.com/pages/giving-backOsprey 'Sustainability' https://www.osprey.com/us/en/sustainabilityClif Bar 'Who We' Are https://www.clifbar.com/who-we-areThe Game Changers movie on the protein myth: https://gamechangersmovie.com/food/protein/'Action' by the Dear Boys is available on all streaming platforms:https://linktr.ee/thedearboys and athttps://thedearboys.bandcamp.com/track/action50% of proceeds go to Friends of the EarthWritten by Tony Page. One Step Beyond, the podcast all about positively engaging with the world outside our door, is back. Yes, we've been away for a full year, but fear not, a new season will be returning to your podcast feed as of the last week of September 2022.What can you expect from the first few episodes? Well, there's an interview with sports author, endurance coach nutritionist and all-round good guy Matt Fitzgerald on why exercise is fun… We will be talking to record-breaking British fell-runner and accidental climate activist Damian Hall about his new book We Can't Run Away From This, on the environmental damage caused by the running industry and what we can do about it, and I will be taking off my shoes and socks alongside Ken Posner, who recently barefoot hiked the entire 211-mile, vertiginous John Muir Trail in California to find out why he so strongly believes that we should get out into the woods with the only padding on our feet being the soles we were born with. And for charity, I will be hiking rather than running– hopefully within the 10-hr cut-off – the annual Cats Tail Trail Marathon, in solidarity with the Palace for Life Marathon March that takes place across South London this time of year, raising funds for programs that support disadvantaged and disabled youth from the area in which I grew up. If you would like to support my fundraising hike, please follow the link below.https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/tonyfletcher64There will be other episodes recorded in the field, there will be travel stories, interviews with people who have made significant life journeys metaphorical or physical, people who have campaigned for positive change or simply started an initiative themselves, essentially anything that gets us out and about, and enjoying the beautiful planet we inherited and the remarkable bodies we are equipped with, hopefully without doing further damage to either. Look and listen out for Season 2 of One Step Beyond wherever you get your podcasts.Questions/comments/suggestions/free beer?
