This week on The She Said It First Podcast, Jerrilyn Lake aka Indeskribeabull and Lynee’ Monae discusses a variety of topics. During What Irritated Me This Week, Lynee’ speaks about the complexities of being the strong friend, the stress of financial responsibilities, and the importance of collective action within the Black community. Jerrilyn and Lynee’ then discuss actor Kofi Siriboe and his thoughts about relationships. Siriboe believes in ethical non-monogamy and Lynee’ and Jerrilyn talk about how they could never settle for that in their relationship. The conversation emphasizes the need for empowerment, self-control, and the impact of societal pressures on personal well-being. Jerrilyn and Lynee’ then discuss NBA star Anthony Edwards and his baby mama drama with his ex-girlfriend, Ayesha Howard. Howard is pregnant with Edwards baby, but he does not want the child, and she released the text messages to prove he does not want this child. Lynee and Jerrilyn also spoke about the Delta Airline plane crash in Toronto and who is to blame for it. Also, employers are tired of dealing with Gen Z workers and they are firing them and not looking to hire more Gen Z employees. With it being Black History Month, Jerrilyn and Lynee gave a Black History Moment. They spoke about the ‘father of Black History” Dr. Carter G. Woodson. The Super Bowl was this past Sunday, and the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes were not the only ones that lost that day. Drake suffered his biggest L from Kendrick Lamar as he performed during the Super Bowl halftime show. Jerrilyn and Lynee’ spoke about how much they enjoyed Kendrick’s show, and they wondered if Drake needs a wellness check. They also spoke about Kanye West going on another Twitter rant. They speak about how Kanye West has fallen from grace and that he is being hateful. Jerrilyn and Lynee’ also talk about leaving the United States to live in another country. Leaving America has become a topic of discussion because of all of the changes happening in this country. And this Friday is Valentine’s Day. Lauryn Hill Whether through her solo work or while spitting bars in The Fugees, Ms. Lauryn Hill always has something important to say. Her one and only solo album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, is something of a foundational guideline for Black womanhood. It covers everything: love, fame, faith, childbirth, and even the ways in which money changes people. Even though Hill seemed to drop out of the public eye after releasing the project, one record was all she needed to prove just how prolific of a hip-hop artist she is. Now excuse us while we go replay her solo work and Fugees hits "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You (I Love You Baby),” "Killing Me Softly," "Everything Is Everything," "Black Rage," and "The Mask."

Gloria Richardson Born in 1922, she was an older adult during the Civil Rights Movement, who first became involved to support her teenage daughter and other youth demonstrators. Unlike the gentle public persona of Rosa Parks, Richardson was openly militant, leading street protests and questioning nonviolence as a tactic. Her stance inspired later efforts of the Black Panthers and others who adopted more militant responses to social injustices. Because of the successful protests that she led as head of the Cambridge (Maryland) Nonviolent Action Committee, Ebony magazine named her “the Lady General of Civil Rights.” She later moved to New York City and worked in human services. Now in her nineties, she supports the youth of the Black Lives Matter movement and has not lost her passion for justice.

Kendrick Lamar This Pulitzer and Grammy-winning artist is the standard of the hip-hop industry today. What makes Kendrick Lamar so great is his ability to rap brutally honest, finely-crafted lyrics over tight beats. He may take his time between albums, but when he finally drops one, you best believe it will be quality. Between his masterworks To Pimp a Butterfly, DAMN., and Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers, Lamar has so much to say about the Black experience – as well as anecdotes about class, image, fame, and self-discovery – that no one else has really put into bars before.

She and her then-husband Eldridge Cleaver spent four years in exile from the United States in Algeria and Korea, where their children were born. Kathleen Cleaver returned to the United States in 1973, and with her husband created the Revolutionary People's Communication Network. Public Enemy  Formed by Chuck D and Flavor Flav on Long Island in 1985, hip-hop group Public Enemy famously rose to prominence for their political messages – as well as addressing American racism and the American media in their songs. Songs like "Fight the Power," "Rebel Without a Pause," and "Can't Truss It" will always be considered stone cold rap classics. If you're looking for a great album of theirs to get you in the Black History Month spirit, we highly recommend their sophomore record It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back. Full of rebellious ideas and resistance, it confronts the complacency found in the system of racially-charged 80s Reagan-era America, and promotes radical activism still necessary in today's day and age.

Hattie McDaniel Hattie McDaniel showed that strength and determination can get you anywhere in life back in the 1940s. When McDaniel became the first Black person to win an Oscar for Gone With the Wind, she was forced to sit in the backroom at the Academy Awards. She wasn't allowed to attend the premiere and received a lot of criticism for playing the “Mammy”. But still paved the way for Black representation in the Hollywood industry.
