Briohny Doyle writes extraordinary fiction. Echolalia was longlisted for the Miles Franklin Literary Award in 2021, and in 2023 she released Why We Are Here. Briohny is a lecturer in creative writing at The University of Sydney and a former Fulbright scholar, and her writing also appears in The Monthly, The Guardian, Meanjin, The Griffith Review, and The Age. Rachel Yoder's Nightbitch is one of the wildest debuts of the year, a feral, often hilarious take on the impact of new motherhood, as a resentful, flailing woman finds herself transforming into a dog. The monstrousness of mothers takes a more sombre form in Briohny Doyle's Echolalia, in which a young mother's alienation from her family and the shrinking world she inhabits lead to a psychological disintegration that matches that of the scorching world outside.

Things are falling apart: the lake is drying up, the town is changing and who you are in a marriage and a broader family is under scrutiny, in ‘Echolalia' by Briohny Doyle.Tania Chandler exposes the fractures in social behaviour that lead her protagonist, Sidney, to question her own mental stability. The novel, ‘All That I Remember About Dean Cola' creates a complex scenario where memory and emotional development intermingle and stereotypes about such illnesses are challenged.

It's no longer realistic.” – Briohny Doyle In this podcast, Briohny Doyle, her writing career, living in the age of climate catastrophe and her latest novel, Echolalia. Briohny Doyle's debut novel, The Island Will Sink, was set in a not-too-distant future on the brink of collapse, where catastrophe is the most popular form of entertainment. Briohny then followed this up with her second book, Adult Fantasy, a personal essay and cultural critique about turning 30 in a world of economic uncertainty, political conservatism, and precarious employment conditions. Her latest book, Echolalia is about a family in the lead up to and aftermath of a tragedy. It's a literary novel that experiments with the tropes and pacing of a domestic thriller. Set in the fictionalised rural centre of Shorehaven, and focalised through characters at crossroads and thresholds, the story poses complex questions about the roles of women, particularly mothers, about class and status, about environmental degradation, responsibility, and legacy. Briohny Smyth knows a thing or two about overcoming hurdles. In fact, today’s conversation is full of so many hurdles, that at one point I was sitting next to my microphone literally holding my hands over my heart. Today, she’s an Alo Moves instructor, yoga teacher, and mother of two based in Los Angeles. But growing up, Smyth was actually a young pop star in Thailand, creating 10 albums in 10 years.
