In this episode, I had the pleasure of welcoming Carly Ottaway. Carly is the CEO of Web of Words, an award-winning boutique marketing agency that empowers entrepreneurs to amplify their online presence and grow their businesses. As a journalist turned copywriter turned agency owner, Carly thrives on helping people and brands articulate their stories with authenticity and purpose. Her passion lies in guiding entrepreneurs to lead from their intuition and embrace more flow in their growth journey. With a decade of experience scaling her business and expanding her family, Carly is dedicated to creating a business that resonates deeply and feels as fulfilling as it looks on Instagram. Carly initially worked for a social media startup in Toronto while freelancing for various publications. A defining moment came when her boss presented her with an ultimatum: choose between her freelance writing and her job at the startup. This ultimatum ignited Carly's fiery spirit, leading her to realize that she could pursue both her passions and serve small businesses in a meaningful way. Carly recounted the early days of her business, where she started with a blog and gradually built her agency. She shared the transformative experience of bringing her husband, Luke, into the business, emphasizing the importance of their complementary skill sets and the growth they achieved together. As they expanded their family, Carly reflected on how the business has supported them through significant milestones, allowing them to be present parents while helping other business owners thrive. Throughout our conversation, we explored the challenges of entrepreneurship, particularly the need to recognize when to grow a team. Carly shared her insights on hiring slowly and ensuring cultural fit, as well as the evolution of her role from hands-on work to stepping into a CEO position. She candidly discussed the struggles of balancing personal and professional life, especially during a tumultuous period when they faced a devastating house fire. Carly's journey through survival mode revealed the importance of self-care and the necessity of asking for help. We discussed the stigma around vulnerability and how showing up authentically can create deeper connections with others. Carly emphasized that the path of least resistance is to be true to oneself, which resonated with both of us as we reflected on our own experiences in the online space. Do you really need website terms and conditions? You might have been told that these are just a “nice to have” or something you can copy from a template, but this couldn't be further from the truth. If you have a website, which I'm guessing you do, Website Ts & Cs are non-negotiable for protecting your online space. They're more than just text at the bottom of your page; they're your shield as part of your core legal documents.Your terms are what help people understand what they can and can't do on your website. It's about setting crystal clear boundaries and expectations—kind of like a digital set of house rules. 1. Intellectual Property Protection: Imagine someone screenshots your beautifully curated portfolio and passes it off as their own. Without the right IP provisions in your T's and C's, you could find yourself in a sticky situation. It's essential to make it clear: "Look but don't copy."2. Disclaimers and Liability Limitations: Your T's and C's should make it known that your site provides general information—not professional advice— and you're not liable if someone misuses it.3. Third-Party Links & Content Sharing: Whether it's affiliate links or sharing course content, clarity is key. Your terms should articulate what's permissible with third-party content and what's not.4. Mailing List Compliance: If you're building a goldmine of a mailing list—great! You just need to ensure that you are compliant with anti-spam laws, which should be reflected in your T's and C's. Your business, and therefore your website, is unique in its offerings and needs. So it goes without saying that tailoring your website T's and C's to fit your specific business model is a must. A beautifully tailored set of website terms and conditions will safeguard your brand and protect your intellectual property. This includes your portfolio work, your course content, your blog, your podcast content - everything and anything you create. With the right terms in place, you can confidently showcase your services, share your content, and build meaningful connections without fear of misuse or misunderstanding. So if you're serious about steering your business toward success, make sure your website T's and C's are as unique and robust as your brand itself.LINKS:Discover the Masterclass Series hereCheck Your Legals with the Essential Legal Checklist hereBook a Free 20-minute Initial Consult with me hereJoin me on Instagram here
The Kara Report | Online Marketing Tips and Candid Business Conversations
In this episode, we're diving into the unnerving (and often shocking!) world of online business coaching with Vancouver-based content creator Danielle Ryan. Danielle has spent years building a business and now pulls back the curtain on some of the most problematic trends in the coaching industry. From unqualified “gurus” to expensive masterminds with questionable value, Danielle doesn't hold back on the hard truths about the online business industry. She shares her own experience of hiring a coach who failed to deliver, along with insights into how business coaching has devolved into a web of upsells, peer-to-peer coaching scams, and sketchy promises. We're not just talking about typical business horror stories—this episode covers the online business scams that MOST OF US have fallen victim too. Danielle's passionate and relatable as she shares how to spot red flags in coaching, why pyramid-style coaching is on the rise, and how to make wise investments without falling prey to empty promises. Casey is a triplet, Renaissance faire enthusiast, people-watcher, storyteller, and accidental entrepreneur. Growing up surrounded by creative, passionate people who followed nontraditional paths combined with her experiences as a neurodivergent, chronically ill, and disabled human led to her creating her business, Chipmunk Marketing. Her online business specializes in Instagram engagement and lead generation with the signature service, Spoon Savvy Leads. Creating a values-led lead sourcing service that aims to make engagement more accessible for solopreneurs, especially those whose mental and physical conditions make working in a traditional business environment challenging, is her jam. In this conversation, my guest Emily Sereno & I are talking ALL about service-based business and navigating being a business owner through ups and downs. We dive into a lot of juicy topics in this from navigating perfectionist tendencies, comparison, and the impact of entrepreneurship and social media on mental health. Also, one of THE most important parts of this conversation is when we dive into how to support yourself and in turn your business, when navigating particularly tough seasons in life, including one that Emily has gone through recently with her fertility journey. This episode is tactical but also feels like a hug from a girlfriend, I think you're going to LOVE it. As mentioned in today's episode: If you are an entrepreneur that has surpassed the 6 figure mark (meaning you generate more than 100K a year in your business) and you are wanting 1 on 1 support to take it to the next level working intimating with me in person, and via zoom call support for a 6 month container– shoot me a DM on Instagram, I'm opening up a few 1 on 1 client spots and I would love to hear more about YOU and your business! Immediately after Meghan dives into $10k months and doing it your way. Meghan focuses on 3 core principles to consider when wanting to make $10k months and beyond: Structure, Marketing and Sales. However, they do have to be refined.Do something once and refine it every time you have a new launch. No market is too saturated, you just have to know how to grab attention and grab curiosity of your ideal client.Once you refine your structure, marketing and sales, you will be able to see how you can make $10k months happen...your way.Links:InstagramLinkedinBlogIf you are struggling with signing clients on sales calls, grab the 10k sales script to help you sign clients today. Have you ever stayed silent on a topic out of fear that you don't know enough? That you'll say the wrong thing? Or that you'll be cancelled from a group of people? Me too! In this episode, I'm graciously held by my friend Lauren while I share an experience that unfolded earlier this year. This conversation is important to have and also hard to navigate. During the process of creating this episode, I battled a lot of mind chatter questioning if this story is even worthy of being made public. I felt like I needed to be very careful with my words and am still holding a lot of fear around how this could be misunderstood. The good girl conditioning and people pleasing tendencies that I've been working hard to unlearn and heal from have been creeping in, and I've also been practicing deep self compassion and space holding for myself. I invite you to be open and curious as you're listening and please reach out and share any reflections or musings that come alive for you. Happy Halloween! In today's episode, we go spooky! You'll hear a quick history on Halloween and then I share my opinions on issues in the online industry. I dive in to each of these “spookies”: People saying that they are multi six figure business owners when they haven't made that amount in a one year span, they're saying that as a career total. People saying that you have to invest in coaching to be successful. People not paying their bills even though they committed to their investment. People who use value-based pricing. People who share that they've unlocked a new level as a way to sell their new offer. People who use click bait hooks that are misleading just to grow on social media. People who talk about passive income like it's a create it once and then leave it and never touch it again type of offer. MRR- master resell rights (go listen to Ep 34 “The tea on master resell rights” to learn more)– people claim it's easy and you'll make a lot of money. People who don't use contracts and terms of use when selling their offers. People who dispute payments instead of just talking to the business owner. In this episode, host Caitlin Liz Fisher explores the misconceptions surrounding blocking and delves into the importance of curating our online spaces. They expand on why liberally using the block button is a necessary act of self-preservation rather than rudeness. By curating our online spaces, we can shield ourselves from negativity and toxic behavior that can negatively impact our mental well-being. So, tune in to explore and reclaim the power of blocking trolls and other hateful input, as well as how it allows us to effectively curate our online spaces for a healthier and more positive online experience. Key Points: Misconceptions around blocking Overcoming guilt or hesitation Curating your online space and liberally using the block button Noteworthy Quotes: “What matters today is that blocking is literally a requirement for being able to call your app a social media app. You have to be able to set that boundary to say, I do not want this person in my space.” “It doesn't matter what I block you for, the key is that I blocked you because I don't want to absorb your take. Your hot take is not on my menu. Thank you. Goodbye.” "Prioritize your well-being over the fear of seeming mean or rude online.” “When you want somebody in your life, that means that you are willing to bring up a conflict with them. We're not auto-blocking people that we want in our life. We will talk to them before we end up blocking.” Links and resources mentioned in this episode: 5 Reasons neurodivergent brains are excellent for creative roles Episode 91 - How Disability Accommodations Should Work for You Embrace Your Autistic Joy TL;DR aka THE GIST: Blocking individuals who bring negativity or toxicity online, can help you create a safer and healthier internet experience for yourself. Blocking is an internet boundary and is crucial for maintaining your mental well-being and avoiding unnecessary confrontations. Don't hesitate to prioritize your own peace over the fear of seeming mean or rude. Remember, blocking is not about being unable to handle someone's truth; it is about creating boundaries and preserving your own energy. So, embrace the power of blocking and confidently curate your online space for a more positive and fulfilling online experience. ______________________________________________________________ Are you a neurodivergent creative aching to dismantle societal myths and pave the way for more inclusive, flexible, and fulfilling experiences through artistic expression? We are not tied to harmful business and workplace practices. In fact, history shows us that we, as humans, work to improve things over time - look at laws against child labor, unsafe working conditions, and safety and truth in advertising regulations.Yes, capitalism and business have been rooted in toxic and inequitable practices for a long time because people can make a lot of money. But we are in a new era of converging trends: more transparency, higher ethical customer demands, and much more marketing-savvy consumers.Today, Brigette Iarrusso shares her unique journey and how she bucked a major higher ed institution by pushing to teach a new model of business success. We talk about raising awareness of coercive business and sales practices, especially in the wild west of the coaching and online business space. We discuss leading in ways not rooted in dominant cultures, how to shift your sales and marketing to be more consent-based, when cancel culture is and is not effective, and how to unlearn toxic and patriarchal leadership and sales approaches to create more sustainable models.
