Deine Viola

"My approach to the piece involved a lot of processing. A number of times. And then, at some point, recording a couple of sessions, improvising with the pieces made up to then. This piece is half of the slightly edited and pruned output of those two sessions."Part of my process involved finding some videos on YouTube of the market where the recording was made, and then running a couple of pieces of that video footage through a Max MSP patch I had made which turns video into midi - this in turn was routed into the DAW to play back bits of the original. There were also a couple of sessions with results pitched up and down and through effects and some plugins too, and then that whole process happened again a few times with the bits produced too...."When going through the video footage, I spent some time thinking about what it was showing. You could see it was a busy market, with lots of stalls, lots of colour, stalls with all sorts of delicious tasty treats, and stalls selling bright and gaudy stuff for the tourists too. The videos I found were also mainly shot by Australian tourists, so there was probably a certain amount of selectivity going on in what was being shown. The field recording has a nice gentle feel - murmurings, bits of background radio and music, low chatter, there's a nice relaxed slow feel about things, but the market seems very much for the tourists, who are wandering around with their cameras. The two bits of footage I used included one showing a lovely smiling lady preparing and selling some tasty-looking food - care, hospitality, nurture, love - quiet and kind, but an exchange. And in the background of another bit I spotted a local chap - a man - down the side of a stall flipping through and counting a wad of money. It felt like two ends of a spectrum. Thought this all quite revealing about the place and its dynamics. Made me realise that there were obviously layers that could be peeled back."The pieces were and weren't made with these thoughts in mind (mainly I was just playing with, and having fun with the sounds), but they did serve to shape the arrangement and shape of the final whole afterwards, moving through sections reflecting these types of thoughts."Koh Samui night market reimagined by Sum Crossings.

Send us a textWhat if the most liberating truth you could hear is also the simplest: Jesus is Lord. We revisit the five solas through a fresh lens and zoom in on Solus Christus—Christ alone—as the pulse of the gospel that still frees captives, steadies anxious hearts, and sends ordinary people into extraordinary mission. We share updates from the field: a new English-speaking campus launching in Koh Samui, a learning center designed to help refugee kids reach higher education, and courageous anti‑trafficking work that brings rescue, restoration, and dignity to survivors. These stories aren't statistics; they are living proof that when the church trusts grace over grind, faith over fear, and Scripture over tradition, real people meet a real Savior. You'll hear of an 11-year-old exploited and now on a path toward healing, and a Pakistani couple who found a Bible, found Christ, and found the courage to start again. Then we dig into Romans 5:1–2 and unpack three anchors that hold in any storm: justification by faith, reconciliation with God, and bold access to the throne of grace. We confront legalism that suffocates and hyper‑grace that excuses, and we point to the better way where obedience springs from love. Along the way, we trace Jesus through all 66 books of Scripture and remember why the early church's original creed still changes lives: Jesus is Lord. If you've felt unworthy, anxious, or far from God, this conversation opens the door to mercy, peace, and confidence in prayer.Join us, share it with a friend who needs hope, and help us keep this work moving. As we speed towards the 4th quarter of 2025, some economic metrics in South East Asia are trending towards nervousness. Air travel capacity is a primary case study, where the year-on-year data is mostly positive (look away now, Indonesia), but the ASEAN and APAC regions (overall) are still playing catching from 2019... all those pre-Covid years ago. Plus, on our weekly travel news roundup, Gary and Hannah journey across ASEAN to discuss the top talking points in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, the Philippines and Timor Leste. En route, we discuss the devastating flooding fallout in Bali, 'brownouts' in Boracay, Koh Samui's controversial mega-bridge and the downbeat news that the Thai-Cambodia border "will not be reopened soon." To salve the sense of gloom, we finish by keeping our fingers crossed that Timor Leste will be admitted as the 11th member of ASEAN - although no-one seems quite sure.

The highly anticipated third season of cult TV show The White Lotus has dropped today and as much as we’ll be picking apart the storylines and theme, we’ll also be obsessing over the location. Koh Samui takes centre stage as arguably the main character, just like Maui and Taormina did in the seasons that came before. But what will locals think of its new-found fame among cashed-up tourists? In today’s deep dive, Sacha Barbour Gatt and Australian Traveller’s Quentin Long talk about the “White Lotus effect”; what happens to a location when an insanely popular show makes it look so damn good. Life is full of stories, and whether we like it or not, they happen to us every day. Yes, these stories might sometimes turn out to be life changing events by themselves, but most of the time their impact is felt much smaller. This does not however lessen their importance. In fact, wouldn't it be correct to say that these ‘small stories' are the building blocks that we use to create the person we are today? So how do you tell your own story? Well, sometimes a personal narrative can be made much easier if you create a narrator and in our new podcast; that's exactly what Jeannie McGinnis has done. She uses the character of ‘Kathyrn McKenzie' to tell her diverse stories, ranging from the alluring lights of beauty pageants to a descent into the murky shadows of the Red Light District. From ‘Alaska to Texas' and ‘Irkutsk to Koh Samui'; Kathryn learns from both the mundane and the extraordinary, all the time recounting her humorous and sometimes gritty experiences.
