Passage: 12 And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with the man you call the King of the Jews?” 13 And they cried out again, “Crucify him.” 14 And Pilate said to them, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.” 17 And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. 18 And they began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him. 29 And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30 save yourself, and come down from the cross!” 31 So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself.” 32 Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe.” 39 And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!” (Mark 15:12-14, 17-19, 29-32, 39 ESV) Song: All Sufficient Merit by Bethany Barnard, Bryan Fowler, and Shane Barnard Lyrics: All sufficient merit shining like the sun A fortune I inherit by no work I have done My righteousness I forfeit at my Savior's cross Where all sufficient merit did what I could not In love He condescended eternal now in time A life without a blemish the Maker made to die The law could never save us our lawlessness had won Until the pure and spotless Lamb had finally come It is done it is finished No more debt I owe Paid in full all sufficient Merit now my own I lay down my garments any empty boast Good works now all corrupted by the sinful host I'm dressed in my Lord Jesus A crimson robe made white No more fear of judgment His righteousness is mine All sufficient merit firm in life and death The joy of my salvation shall be my final breath When I stand accepted before the throne of God I'll gaze upon my Jesus and thank Him for the cross Yes I'll thank Him for the cross Oh Your merit now my own Oh Your merit now my own Prayer: Lord, I believe and confess that you suffered under Pontius Pilate, and that you were crucified, dead and buried. It was all because of my sins. You redeemed and ransomed me from an eternal cross, from the pain, suffering, and death. And you did it by your own cross, suffering, anguish, pain, and bitter death—as well as by the pouring out of your blood. In this we poor humans recognize your greatest and highest love to us. For you have changed for us your heavy cross into a light yoke. You have turned your bitter sufferings into perpetual joys. And you have turned your death in the midst of anger … into eternal life. So I will praise and thank you, my gracious Lord Jesus Christ, forever and ever. Amen. —Balthasar Hubmaier
The prophesy of a Messiah in old testament scripture was interpreted by some as God sending one who would bring about political peace for the Jewish people. In reality, the Messiah, Jesus, brought about a personal peace for those who believe in Him and focus on His message in their daily lives, even during the toughest personal storms. What happened when the followers of Jesus were forced to be separated from Him because of political pressure?February 09 2025Music: CCLI License 20576625- Hold Me Savior | Ben Shive, Bryan Fowler, Sandra McCracken, Skye Peterson | Copyright 2024 Beehive Songs, Getty Music Hymns and Songs, Getty Music Publishing, Hymns Of Hers
Passage: 18 Then the LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper corresponding to him.” 19 The LORD God formed out of the ground every wild animal and every bird of the sky, and brought each to the man to see what he would call it. And whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all the livestock, to the birds of the sky, and to every wild animal; but for the man no helper was found corresponding to him. 21 So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to come over the man, and he slept. God took one of his ribs and closed the flesh at that place. 22 Then the LORD God made the rib he had taken from the man into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 And the man said: This one, at last, is bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh; this one will be called “woman,” for she was taken from man. 24 This is why a man leaves his father and mother and bonds with his wife, and they become one flesh. 25 Both the man and his wife were naked, yet felt no shame. To you, no creature is ugly. You have created them with your divine order, peace, and harmony. I call to you. Everything that can love, loves you—both those that know what they love, and those that do not know what they love. I call to you who have created all creatures very good, without any evil, you who will not completely show yourself to any except the pure in heart. For you are the Father of truth, the wisdom of the true and highest life, and the highest life of blessing. You are the highest good, the highest brightness. You are the Father of the Son who has awakened us, and who still brings us to life from the sleep of our sins, and who bids us come to you. Amen. —Augustine of Hippo
Passage: 38 He also said in his teaching,“Beware of the scribes, who want to go around in long robes and who want greetings in the marketplaces, 39 the best seats in the synagogues, and the places of honor at banquets. 40 They devour widows' houses and say long prayers just for show. These will receive harsher judgment.” 41 Sitting across from the temple treasury, he watched how the crowd dropped money into the treasury. Many rich people were putting in large sums. 42 Then a poor widow came and dropped in two tiny coins worth very little. 43 Summoning his disciples, he said to them,“Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 For they all gave out of their surplus, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had — all she had to live on.” -- Mark 12:38-44 (CSB) Song: All Sufficient Merit (https://open.spotify.com/track/6br0X4eVZGmT6j9vgQWHVV?si=14d6a7721e164799) by Bethany Barnard, Bryan Fowler, and Shane Barnard Lyrics: All sufficient merit shining like the sun A fortune I inherit by no work I have done My righteousness I forfeit at my Savior's cross Where all sufficient merit did what I could not In love He condescended eternal now in time A life without a blemish the Maker made to die The law could never save us our lawlessness had won Until the pure and spotless Lamb had finally come It is done it is finished No more debt I owe Paid in full all sufficient Merit now my own I lay down my garments any empty boast Good works now all corrupted by the sinful host I'm dressed in my Lord Jesus A crimson robe made white No more fear of judgment His righteousness is mine All sufficient merit firm in life and death The joy of my salvation shall be my final breath When I stand accepted before the throne of God I'll gaze upon my Jesus and thank Him for the cross Yes I'll thank Him for the cross Oh Your merit now my own Oh Your merit now my own Prayer: O God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves as he is pure; that, when he comes again with power and great glory, we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Passage: 1 Therefore, since we have this ministry because we were shown mercy, we do not give up. 2 Instead, we have renounced secret and shameful things, not acting deceitfully or distorting the word of God, but commending ourselves before God to everyone's conscience by an open display of the truth. 3 But if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4 In their case, the god of this age has blinded the minds of the unbelievers to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5 For we are not proclaiming ourselves but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus's sake. 6 For God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of God's glory in the face of Jesus Christ. 7 Now we have this treasure in clay jars, so that this extraordinary power may be from God and not from us. 8 We are afflicted in every way but not crushed; we are perplexed but not in despair; 9 we are persecuted but not abandoned; we are struck down but not destroyed. 10 We always carry the death of Jesus in our body, so that the life of Jesus may also be displayed in our body. 11 For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus's sake, so that Jesus's life may also be displayed in our mortal flesh. 12 So then, death is at work in us, but life in you. Opening Song: Never Stop Singing (Psalm 95) (https://open.spotify.com/track/38p7VH1XBFRSk6MXipCLxb?si=3f8bc2bcd01c41d4) by Britton Hardcastle, Carrie Hardcastle, Bryan Fowler, Mac Hays, George Koehl, and John Marc Koh Lyrics: From the greatest depths To the highest heights Oh the endless breadth Of Your hands By Your spoken Word All creation formed Can we hear You speak again Come let us sing Come let us shout Of Your goodness Come let us praise Come let us bow down In worship You are our God God of salvation You are the song We'll never stop singing Never stop singing In our wandering When we've lost our way Still You're holding us In Your hands In the raging seas In the barren land On Your promise We will stand Come let us sing Come let us shout Of Your goodness Come let us praise Come let us bow down In worship You are our God God of salvation You are the song We'll never stop singing My only song Jesus my only song You are the only one worthy of My Hallelujah Come let us sing Come let us shout of Your goodness Come let us praise Come let us bow down in worship Come let us sing Come let us shout Of Your goodness Come let us praise Come let us bow down In worship You are our God God of salvation You are the song We'll never stop singing Never stop singing Passage: Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! 2 Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! 3 For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. 4 In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. 5 The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. 6 Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker! 7 For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. Today, if you hear his voice, 8 do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah, as on the day at Massah in the wilderness, 9 when your fathers put me to the test and put me to the proof, though they had seen my work. 10 For forty years I loathed that generation and said, “They are a people who go astray in their heart, and they have not known my ways.” 11 Therefore I swore in my wrath, “They shall not enter my rest.” Musical Reflection: “Amazing Grace,” Appalachian folk tune Reflection Notes: This beloved tune, formally known as NEW BRITAIN, originates from the folk music of Appalachia. The melody is simple and outlines triads, making it memorable; the ascending line creates a triumphant climax. Prayer: This is another day, O Lord. I know not what it will bring forth, but make me ready, Lord, for whatever it may be. If I am to stand up, help me to stand bravely. If I am to sit still, help me to sit quietly. If I am to lie low, help me to do it patiently. And if I am to do nothing, let me do it gallantly. Make these words more than words, and give me the Spirit of Jesus. Amen.
Sunday's Sermon: Aliso Creek Church Podcast (https://alisocreekchurchpodcast.fireside.fm) Passage: 4 Therefore, my brothers,[a] whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved. Exhortation, Encouragement, and Prayer 2 I entreat Euodia and I entreat Syntyche to agree in the Lord. 3 Yes, I ask you also, true companion,[b] help these women, who have labored[c] side by side with me in the gospel together with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life. 4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. 5 Let your reasonableness[d] be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; 6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 What you have learned[e] and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. Opening Song: The Lord's Prayer (It's Yours) (https://open.spotify.com/track/1baVBBJwh3e2EMvRTDI8WH?si=1ec14b68f3f94cea) by Bryan Fowler, Jacob Sooter, and Matt Maher Lyrics: Father let your kingdom come (holy holy) Father let your will be done On Earth as in Heaven (let it be done) Right here in my heart Give us this day our daily bread Forgive us forgive us As we forgive the ones who sinned Against us forgive them And lead us not into temptation But deliver us from the evil one Let your kingdom come It's yours it's yours All yours all yours The kingdom the power The glory are yours It's yours it's yours All yours all yours Forever and ever The kingdom is yours On Earth as in Heaven Right here in my heart Passage: 15 Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his words. 16 And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone's opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances.[a] 17 Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” 18 But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? 19 Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius.[b] 20 And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” 21 They said, “Caesar's.” Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.” 22 When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away. Musical Reflection: Children of the Heavenly Father (TRYGGARE KAN INGEN VARA), trad. Swedish folk song Reflection Notes: Lina Sandell-Berg purportedly wrote the lyrics for this hymn after witnessing her father's untimely death in a boating accident. Her text focuses on our heavenly Father, who will never leave us or forsake us, in life or in death. The tune originates from a 19th-century Swedish folk song, its sweet fluidity well-suited for the words of comfort. Prayer: Almighty and everlasting God, you govern all things both in heaven and on earth: Mercifully hear the supplications of your people, and in our time grant us your peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Find Sunday's Sermon Here (https://alisocreekchurchpodcast.fireside.fm) Passage: 12 Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually advanced the gospel, 13 so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard, and to everyone else, that my imprisonment is because I am in Christ. 14 Most of the brothers have gained confidence in the Lord from my imprisonment and dare even more to speak the word fearlessly. 15 To be sure, some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of good will. 16 These preach out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel; 17 the others proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, thinking that they will cause me trouble in my imprisonment. 18 What does it matter? Only that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is proclaimed, and in this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice 19 because I know this will lead to my salvation through your prayers and help from the Spirit of Jesus Christ. 20 My eager expectation and hope is that I will not be ashamed about anything, but that now as always, with all courage, Christ will be highly honored in my body, whether by life or by death. Why do we participate in communion? Do we just do this out of tradition, or because Jesus did it with his disciplines? This week Darrell will unpack communion and bring us back to heart of the meal that Jesus' shared with his followers before going to the cross. If you are curious about communion, this is a really good week to fine out more what Christianity is about. If you have been following Jesus a long time, this will equally challenge you to dig into the wonder of this beautiful sacrament with thanksgiving. We will take time to celebrate this sacrament together and it will be more meaningful Music: Firm Foundation (He Won't); Austin Davis, Chandler Moore, and Cody Carnes, 2021 Capitol CMG Paragon (Admin. by Capitol CMG Publishing), TBCO Publishing (Admin. by Capitol CMG Publishing), Writer's Roof Publishing (Admin. by Capitol CMG Publishing), A.L.K.D. This week Darrell discusses the importance of welcoming all, which is the riskiest part of being a Christian. Most churches would not put this as their Mission Statement because they do not want to welcome all. Jesus welcomed all, but that didn't mean He accepted what they did. River City Church is dedicated to follow the example of Jesus with welcoming all. As far as "beginning with the end in mind", LOVE is a good place to start. The Bible shares that faith, hope and love are three things that will remain and the greatest of these is love (1 Corinthian 13:13). For many of us though, our lived experiences and relationships will tell us that love can be difficult to initiate and sustain. As River City moves on with its new mission statement, "Love others" is our highest aim and we need one another to figure this out.
