In this episode, I talk with psychologist and author Hillary McBride about her powerful book Holy Hurt. We explore what spiritual trauma really is, how it shows up in our bodies and beliefs, and what healing can look like. We also talk openly about my own past as a pastor—how I once taught things that caused harm—and why I believe it's so important to have these honest, healing conversations now.Topics We CoverWhat makes something “spiritual trauma”Why it's so hard to name trauma that's systemic, not just event-basedThe cost of being told you're broken at the coreHow our bodies remember what our minds try to forgetThe difference between real healing and spiritual bypassingWhat leaders and former leaders can do when they realize they've hurt othersHope for anyone starting to rebuild after religious painAbout Hillary McBrideDr. Hillary McBride is a therapist, researcher, and author who specializes in trauma, spirituality, and the mind-body connection. This Sunday, Dr. Heidi Baker shared a powerful word centered on John 6 and Jesus as the Bread of Life. Drawing from her life among the poor in Mozambique, Heidi reminded us that the gospel is not just something we preach—it's something we become. As she recounted encounters with extreme hunger, both physical and spiritual, she brought us back to Jesus' call to receive fresh bread daily through communion and intimacy with Him. We can't give what we haven't first received. In a world full of need, Jesus invites us not to burn out trying harder, but to abide deeper, be filled with Him, and be broken and given for others. This was more than a message—it was a commissioning to carry the heart of God to the hungry, the hurting, and the overlooked. FRESH BREAD EVERY MORNING The scent of fresh, glazed donuts wafts through the windows of our church on Sunday morning. Suddenly, I was hungry for one of those beautiful creations. Hurry up, get through with your sermon, Dad, I thought as I visualized one of those sticky, sweet, luscious glaze donuts in my hand. As far as I was concerned, church couldn't get over soon enough. All these years later, I can still see that donut shop across the street from the church and smell those fresh morsels of goodness they produce every morning. My buddy and I would stand outside the open door and watch them bake and dip those donuts, just hoping they would have pity on us and give us one. The moment the spirit of God dropped that thought in my heart today about fresh bread every morning, I was instantly taken back to Long Beach, California, at 1800 E. Anaheim. And that wonderful donut shop. Three decades later, Arlis and I and our little boy Tony were in Wilmington, California, on a tremendous pastoral team led by my uncle Herbert Ezell. At the time, he was at the unimaginable age of 60 with a team of young pastors in their 20s and 30s. Pastor Ezell had a hectic schedule, yet He was faithful to be at the church every morning somewhere around 6 o'clock for prayer. It frustrated us young stallions that we couldn't get ahead of him in those early morning sessions. He always got there first. One day, I asked him how he managed to stay so energized with all the things he was involved in. He gave me a spiritual nugget I had carried most of my life when he "said daily freshness, George daily freshness." I believe there's a reason why God gave us 24 hours a day. It provides us with an opportunity to start fresh and new every morning. The Scriptures tell us that the presence of God and the grace of God are new every morning, also. Sometime later, my apostle and friend Norman Clear told me he stayed in the bedroom on Monday morning after a busy Sunday until his spirit was renewed in the presence of the Lord. I encourage you to have fresh bread every morning. YOU CAN GIVE HERE: http://www.georgewatkinsministries.co... WEBSITE= http://www.georgewatkinsministries.co...
