One was not enough. This monster-sized episode of California's Gold needed a monster-sized Huell's Gold to do it justice. On this second part of the In-N-Out double double Chris, Allan, and Kathleen dive into the MEAT of the episode. We see exactly how an In-N-Out location is run and hear even more behind the scenes details from Kathleen, who worked at In-N-Out for 7 years. Hopefully, this episode doesn't SPREAD you too thin. Are these In-N-Out puns getting too CHEESY?!
Well Huell Heads, this is a big one. In fact, it was so big, its a double-double. That's right, Huell spends so much time at the In-N-Out Burger complex and Store Number One, we had to split it into two episodes. Part one features Allan's wife and ex-employee of In-N-Out Kathleen!! We are getting the inside scoop, not only from Huell, but from Kathleen's first-hand experience. This is a classic episode of California's Gold and we couldn't be more excited to bring it to you!!
Jana serves up another listener suggestion for the snack: Chili with peanut butter! Then Mark and Jana wrap up their extended interview with Luis Fuerte, cameraman for Huell Howser on California's Gold.

If you’re not from California, you may not know about the statewide treasure who is Huell Howser! For 22 years, Huell Howser shared California's history, cultural diversity, natural wonders, and amazing denizens through his travel tv shows, "California's Gold" and “Visiting.” Born in Tennessee with a prominent southern accent, Huell was an unlikely spokesperson for California. But his unwavering enthusiasm and genuine curiosity gave us episodes featuring dryer lint artwork, age-old soda, an oversized 3-foot goldfish, among countless others. In this episode, I got to visit the California’s Gold Exhibit and the Huell Howser Archives in Orange, CA. I spoke to John Carlo Encarnacion, the archives technician, and learned all about Huell Howser, his life, his work ethic, and his legacy. This was a special treat and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! Growing up, family summer vacations in a rented Winnebago meant traveling to the deserts of Arizona, New Mexico among others. In this episode, Kim talks about playing games with her siblings on the drives and running around in the open space. 'Wanderlust' is a word she uses to describe her family, "We were always going somewhere." Her love of photography grew from taking trips to all the places Huell Howser featured on his California's Gold television show. Though coming to live in the desert was a dream come true, Kim experienced anxiety about work and money early on, which at times was so strong, she could barely breathe. In the process, she applied for a house - and got it - and then applied for a job - and got it. One might think the desert was welcoming Kim with a little bit of a test, as only the desert can. In her role as a Professor in the Child Development program at Copper Mountain College, she works to prepare students for careers in child care and says the program is also a great foundation for elementary school teachers and classes also benefit parents looking for a better understanding of their children or themselves. If you're interested, Kim can talk with you about the program: 760-366-3791 x0452. Since Kim moved to the desert knowing no one, she began following photographers or other creatives whose work she came to like on social media. She also started attending open mic poetry readings hosted by Space Cowboy Books and Cholla Needles in Joshua Tree, which lead her to writing a sci-fi piece, read on a recent episode of 'Simultaneous Times' podcast. You can hear Kim's story in Episode 14 here. Discovering the book, 'A Wrinkle in Time', was what drew Kim in to the world of sci-fi. Though when she tried to watch Star Trek with her dad and grandpa, she was told, "this is what the grown ups or guys watch", which, of course, made it even more intriguing. She admires and is inspired by the work of African-American sci-fi writer Octavia Butler, as well as Poet Laureate outgoing, Tracy K. Smith. This is definitely one of the more odd episodes of California's Gold. It really didn't seem like it at first. An eccentric guy builds a castle and left behind a structure that is now a monument to a bygone era. There are numerous stories like this throughout California. But once you scratch the surface of Scotty's Castle, and the less than scrupulous manner with which Walter Scott formed a life-long relationship with the Johnson's from Chicago, the wild and weird ways of Death Valley come into focus. Join us as we dive deeper into this most Golden piece of the California desert! Video- California's Gold: Scotty's Castle Scotty's Castle Nation Park website (CASTLE CLOSED UNTIL 2020!!) Its the beginning of season 5 of California's Gold, and Huell really outdid himself this week. We may be biased however, since were in Kern County visiting the Weedpatch Camp. This labor camp was built to house some of the 1 million migrants who came to California during the dust bowl. Huell and Louie come visit and former residents celebrate the times they shared there and teach the children of the current migrant workers who still call the Arvin Camp home all about those early dust bowl days. Steve & Izzy discuss this recently rebooted sequel to the movie that started the whole found-footage genre... but really doesn't use it in the sequel... and despite being called "Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows"... there's no book of shadows... or even really witches, just bitchy wiccans. It's... really interesting at best. Also, we try an Oktoberfest Lager from Hangar 24 Brewing and a wild yeast ale commemorating the legendary Hule Hauser, host of "California's Gold." So check out this eye-roller and let us know what you think!
