Make yourself comfortable and relax, on this all-new episode of Transmissions, we're focusing on the fantastic tunes crafted by John Caroll Kirby. You've heard a lot about him in our previous episode with Eddie Chacon. John's music exemplifies the current zone where jazz, fusion, new age, soul, R&B, and electronic composition all mingle; in addition to Eddie, he's worked with artists like Blood Orange, Solange, Frank Ocean, and many more. But it's his own records, including this year's Blowout, that demonstrate his compositional chops. Like many of his records, the native Angeleno recorded it far from home, in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica. Travel is a constant for him—see his incredible web series Kirby's Gold, a travelouge that finds him trying on his best Huell Howser with musicians all around the globe. This week on the show we discuss getting out into the world and much more. Transmissions is a part of the Talkhouse Podcast Network. Next week on Transmissions? Conner Habib of the essential culture and philosophy podcast Against Everyone joins us for a rollicking conversation. We hope you'll join—until then, this Transmission is concluded.

Frank Murphy's friend Avi McCullah is today's co-host. Avi worked on-air at Jewelry Television and ShopNBC, where she sold high-end men's watches. She would fly from Knoxville to Minnesota to appear on ShopNBC.  Frank's figs are in season. He has been harvesting about 60 figs per day this week. He accidentally broke off a branch of a fig tree and is trying to ripen the figs from that branch by placing it in water.  Avi has lied to her sons about figs. She told them that natural fig bars are called “pop tarts.” When they ask for a pop tart, they get a fig bar.  Figs are inverted flowers. Frank says the taste and texture of his Brown Turkey figs remind him of oatmeal with brown sugar.  Frank brought 24 figs to a meeting of a non-profit organization. As the chairperson was trying to start the meeting, another man started telling Frank about the laxative effects of figs, which is something Frank appreciates.  Avi is dating someone who told her, “Let thy food be thy medicine.” Frank asks if she is dating a medieval barber. Avi asks if you can make fig jam or preserves without sugar.  The fig jam recipe Frank and his wife Jere use calls for 3 cups of mashed figs, 3 cups of sugar, and two small boxes of lemon Jell-O.  Avi asks if you can make fruit leather with figs. Fruit leather is like a natural fruit roll-up. The concept is similar to soft beef jerky. Frank watched an Adam Ragusea video about making beef jerky.  Avi wants to learn old methods of food preservation. Frank says that canning fig preserves is easier than he feared. You can vacuum seal the mason jars by putting them in boiling water for a certain amount of time.  The topic of canning reminds Frank of an episode of Visiting with Huell Howser in which Huell and cameraman Louie Fuerte visit a tuna cannery. Frank recalls Huell being amazed that they cook the tuna in the can. The episode is on YouTube: https://youtu.be/cxuzj-k-XuU  When Avi uses the word schniblet, Frank says it's the secret word and that they should get an extra $100 between them. As a kid, he used to stay up late to watch Groucho Marx on reruns of You Bet Your Life.  Avi says she gets self-conscious on camera. Frank once needed to find a co-host for a project called SMOMOTV and he asked Avi. They recorded a show in an extra room at a brochure printing plant between Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. Avi taught Frank to buy a cheap bronzer but an expensive makeup brush.  Avi says the medieval barber doesn't have prepared foods in his pantry. Frank mentions that there is a sales tax holiday in Tennessee during August on some food products that could be called staples or ingredients. Prepared food items and candy are not included.  Avi says that snack foods in England have fewer ingredients than the same products in the United States. She is trying to be aware of the ingredients in her food now that she has turned 40.  This episode is sponsored by Audible Premium Plus. Eddie Lin, the blogger behind Deep End Dining, risked his stomach on raw chicken and lived to tell about it on Evan Kleiman's Good Food. He began his well-known food blog Deep End Dining around fall 2004. Almost immediately it began to receive critical attention as one of his entries was selected to be in the 2005 food anthology Best Food Writing. Eddie is the author of Lonely Planet's Extreme Cuisine, a guidebook about exotic foods around the globe. His extreme food exploits and essays have been covered by NPR, PBS, the Los Angeles Times, OC Weekly, BlackBook Magazine, Food & Wine, the Daily Telegraph, the Guardian, USA Today, and others. Eddie was an on-air contributor and segment producer for KCRW's long-running Good Food and has appeared on Visiting with Huell Howser, Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern, Freakiest Foods, Eat St., KABC Eyewitness News's The Man Who Eats Everything, and CSI: NY. Eddie Lin was a guest judge on Top Chef Masters, among other popular tv food competition shows, such as MasterChef. Eddie's ideal job as a tasting judge kept him busy traveling the country to vet hopeful cooking contestants for shows like The Taste with Anthony Bourdain, Nigella Lawson, Chef Ludo Lefebvre, and Chef Marcus Samuelsson. He also appeared on Knife Fight in 2013 alongside Top Chef Ilan Hall. His long ago attempted YouTube series, Kamikaze Kitchen, featured unsuspecting chefs who are ambushed at their restaurants with a "mystery ingredient" and usually it's something you would not find on the menu, like alligator. Eddie is currently a contributor to LA Taco and LA Times, covering restaurants and interesting food stories around the city. He's also writing his food memoir titled All You Can Eat Hell, a requiem for a restaurant, about his family's failed all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet in Houston, Texas and his coming of age exile into lonely adulthood as the number one son of Taiwanese immigrants. Eddie and I have dined together at some of the best vegan restaurants around LA for the past nine years. Our favorite dates happen to take place at vegan Chinese restaurants in particular. We also like to go have dim sum in LA's famed San Gabriel neighborhood where the most authentic Chinese restaurants are found. And what's Eddie's favorite dim sum dish? Chicken feet. So how am I, a plant-based vegan chef and host of the Plantfull Life podcast, with this crazy guy? On today's show, we enjoy the video that essentially just ended the lead singer from Smash Mouth's career. Perry tells some tales of his father's rock and roll career including all manner of inebriated musicians. Unfortunately, those incidents didn't end any of their careers. Our thoughts and prayers for the end of an iconic era. Few rose to the heights they reach. We follow that up by reminiscing of a few great other moments of people who might have had a few too many of many things. We debate the merit of wildly polling the planet in the attempt to kill of your enemy, which is the current route Chinese are taking and it's hard to knock the long term thinking, versus nuking ourselves into oblivion. Brandon eagerly awaits Greta Thunberg becoming severely anti-chinese. This was intended to be a Retarded In Plain Sight, but David Wilcock broke our brain so we decided to give this one to the people. Joonny Fritz is a man of many talents.  In addition to being one of my personal favorite artists at the forefront of 21st century country music, he is a father, leatherworker, and according to his business card, “LA's Premiere Used House Salesman.”  He grew up in Vermont, lived in Philly later in life, and then moved to Nashville where he get his country music career going releasing a pair of albums under the moniker Jonny Corndawg.  He has since moved to Los Angeles, where he works in real estate, and has reverted to his given name to release the albums “Dad Country” and “Sweet Creep.”  Our correspondent and friend of the show Henry Barnes (Amps For Christ) recorded this interview with Jonny earlier this year.  They are discussing their respective experiences in craftsmanship, songwriting, southern California geography, Huell Howser, Jonny's cuisine-centric expeditions to India, and much more on this installment.Jonny Fritz is a marketplace at www.jonnyfritz.com, go buy some music, merch or a used house!Illustration for this episode by Taylor W Rushing.  @taylorwrushing taylorwrushing.com Low Profile receives in-kind support from San Francisco St Bakery in Olympia Wa.Support this show by visiting patreon.com/lowprofileKeep up with the show on social media @lowpropodast The website is lowprofilepodcast.comEnd TransmissionRelated links:You can find music and merchandise from Jonny Fritz at jonnyfritz.com.Anybody wanna buy a house?

Derick McDuff, co-host of The Underrated podcast  joins co-hosts Tom Nash and Vanessa Franko, to talk about the time PBS show California's Gold went to Coachella back in 2008, why you should plan ahead for the fest and more.  In this episode: Vanessa and Tom went to concerts again! She went to the Day Trip festival in San Bernardino. He checked out the new SoFi Stadium in Inglewood to see Kaskade and Deadmau5. Stagecoach has announced its lineup, with plenty of Coachella crossover acts. Pearl Jam, who started it all in Indio nearly 30 years ago, is headlining the second weekend of the Ohana festival. There's the new Festival Electrica in San Pedro with Los Tucanes de Tijuana next month and more.  We talk about some great Coachella sets, including the time Tove Lo appeared with Alesso looking like an angel, Blur, Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, Hans Zimmer and more. Coachella has played host to a number of film composers over the years, including Daft Punk, Hans Zimmer and Trent Reznor. We're hoping Danny Elfman will add to the list in 2022. We hope Mika and Hot Chip will be back, too.  Coachella let an outside film crew in for Huell Howser's PBS show “California's Gold” back in 2008. We talk about the show, how rare it was for that to happen and how much Coachella has changed since.
