What might it look like for us to match the complexity of our time with courageous and creative responses for discipleship? Join pastor and thought leader Mark Sayers as he seeks to answer this question amongst many others in this long-form conversation for pastors. In this interview, Mark marries a thoughtful dissection of felt, current issues around discipleship with ancient Christian responses such as perseverance, prayer and radical dependency on God. With the backdrop of these “renewal spot fires” occurring around the world, Mark engages the challenges and questions leading in the church today with a message of hope, grounded in God's inbreaking Kingdom. We know this is a long one… but we hope in a single listen or a few that you'll ultimately be moved through this episode to continue seeking renewal and deeper discipleship where the Lord has you. This past April, we gathered around 100 pastors from across Canada for an online gathering titled Discipleship in Our Complex Age. This conversation with Mark is from that rich time together. What does the Bible say about freedom of speech? Is there anything spiritual behind online censorship? If so, what should the Church do about it? What should YOU do about it? In a time when tolerance is celebrated and Christians who stand on Biblical principles are ridiculed and shadowbanned, it seems like there are very few who stand up and speak truth. Jeff Kliewer, author of Blood-Red Church: How Redemption Colors our Politics, believes that the redeemed of the Lord do, in fact, have a responsibility to stand for certain non-negotiable ethical positions in the public arena. Christians are free to disagree on disputable matters, but when it comes to life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, family, church, capitalism, and the sovereignty of this nation, redemption has colored our politics red. Mark Sayers, Mark Turman, and Mark Legg discuss the great shift the world is going through, the lingering effects of Covid, how the “gray zone” affects ministry, and how to remain a “non-anxious presence.” Show notes: Mark Sayers talks about his faith journey and how he started writing (2:14). The three Marks talk about the significance of our culture's ongoing shift, and the anxiety that comes from it (8:08). Sayers discusses the role of the internet in that shift, and the “hardware” change our culture is going through, focusing on the effects of Covid (12:50). They turn to discuss the culture's widespread sense of false security, and how abundance leads to us trusting God less (27:16). Sayers digs further into the idea of the “gray zone,” and why confusion leads to anxiety and fear, and how the Bible applies to those struggles (32:14). Sayers ends by discussing the importance of leadership, and why God's presence is critical in times of transition (43:19). Episode 68 | David Kinnaman from Barna and Mark Sayers of Red Church to explore what some of the latest data and church trends might mean for the future of the church and pastoring. Barna in 2019 and 2021 did a significant research project called the Connected Generation where they interviewed 18-35 year olds on areas of church engagement, mental health, and global concerns. In this episode, they specifically explore the Canadian data and what it might reveal about the shifting trends in young christians and non christians. Something Mark emphasizes is that although many of the trends can seem discouraging, we have seen them coming; the pandemic just acted as a portal to jump us ahead faster. For example, many of the people who have left the church during the pandemic were already considering it anyways. So where does that leave us? Well, both David and Mark have hope. What remains is a faithful remnant who have chosen to stay and who are hungrier than ever for the things of God. About | David Kinnaman is the author of the bestselling books Faith For Exiles, Good Faith, You Lost Me and unChristian. The interview was recorded on May 10, 2021 and was scheduled to be broadcast about three weeks later. Colin is an Episcopal priest who is the rector of a church in Southern New Hampshire. On his website he says that his podcast “is first and foremost an open invitation to partake in a journey of spiritual discovery. It’s an exploration about how people understand, evolve, and deepen their relationship with God, how their stories relate to our own experiences, and how we can inform and nurture the spiritual growth of ourselves, our faith communities, and our society.”He came across my podcast “The Tao of Christ” while doing a google search for Christianity and nondualism. He emailed me and asked to interview me for his podcast. In this interview we talk about my spiritual background and how my interest in the Tao Te Ching began. We also discuss the definition of nonduality and how it fits with Christianity. Here is a link to Colin’s podcast website: https://redchurchdoor.org/
