Show #139 | Guest: Geoffrey Nunberg is an adjunct full professor at the School of Information at the University of California at Berkeley. His many books include the landmark Going Nucular, named one of the ten best nonfiction books of 2004 by Amazon.com and made best-of-the-year lists by the San Jose Mercury News, the Boston Globe, the Hartford Courant, and the Chicago Tribune. He’s a recipient of the Linguistic Society of America’s Language and the Public Interest Award. He also worked on the development of linguistic technologies for Xerox. | Show Summary: Donald Trump says Hillary Clinton is “wacky”. Clinton claims Trump is “dangerously incoherent.” In the political world, nearly every word is carefully honed to convey specific messages to a deliberately targeted audience. From the choice of vernacular to the number of syllables, the chosen language speaks volumes about America’s culture and subcultures – and the people who want their vote. Linguist Geoff Nunberg joins Angie to unravel what this election’s crop of words and phrases tells us about what we’re hearing and what’s behind it. And they’ll look at the evolution of political language from elections past.

Happy Friday!   Today my focus will be on a hearing that was conducted by the Indiana State Senate on Immigration. I was one of the witnesses at that hearing.  You will be surprised at some of the information I learned from the Senators who attended the hearing. Because of the policies of this administration, the states are left to try to fill the void where immigration law enforcement is concerned. Of course this is an untenable situation. We will also consider my latest article for FrontPage Magazine, “The Three Most Important Issues For 2016: Immigration, Immigration, Immigration- America's most underrated -- and consequential -- challenge.” Please be a part of my “Bucket Brigade of Truth” and tell your friends and neighbors about my program- and mywebsite- remember Democracy is not a “Spectator Sport!”

Politics has been called a rigged game, with elites using money and organizational resources to pull the puppet strings of most candidates for high office. However, the entrance into the race for US president of candidates Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump who both reject funding from Wall Street threatens to challenge that truism. This week's Global Research News Hour attempts to cut through the propaganda and jargon and assess what real options are out there for making substantive and humane political change. William Blum is a long-time critic of US foreign policy. He has authored five books including his most recent, America's Deadliest Export: Democracy – The Truth About US Foreign Policy and Everything Else. He also publishes the “Anti-Empire Report” on his site www dot williamblum dot org. In this interview, Blum outlines his reservations about Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, the problematic media coverage of the campaign, and the astonishing view that Trump may actually be the less objectionable in certain respects than both Sanders and Clinton. Mark Robinowitz is publisher of oilempire dot us, a political map to connect the dots.  He has been a writer, political activist, ecological campaigner and permaculture practitioner for over three decades.  He is also author of the forthcoming Peak Choice: cooperation or collapse, an uncensored guide to Earth, energy and money. In this interview, Robinowitz equates the choice between the Democrats and the Republicans to one between death by lethal injection and death by the electric chair. He outlines the mechanisms employed to stop any threat to the establishment from ever becoming elected president. He also explains how the energy and economic decline is becoming reflected in the politics of the Trump campaign.

This week, we will expose the myths around the Bernie Sanders Tax Plan. Many supporters of the Clinton campaign have asserted that American voters would not support a presidential candidate who proposed to raise their taxes. The Tax Foundation has published a less-that-accurate analysis of this tax plan suggesting that it would cost jobs, GDP, and wages. Robert Pollin, author of Thoughts on Tax Rates and Revenue Potential for Financial Transaction Tax in U.S. Financial Markets, an analysis of potential revenue and costs of adding a small tax on Wall Street stock and bond transactions, will join us this week to discuss this analysis.  We will also welcome Deborah Burger, President of the National Nurses United Union, who will discuss the prioritites of her organizations's membership and how they relate to the Sanders Campaign's issues. We will also feature an interview with Dr. Gerald Friedman, professor of economics at University of Massachusetts, discussing his analysis of Bernie's tax plan to pay for his healthcare proposal.

Happy Friday! Since my last program, CAPS and FrontPage Magazine have each published an article I have written. On October 20th FrontPage Magazine published my article, “Immigration Law Enforcement: Why Bother?- The crucial issues at stake for American citizens.” On October 22nd, Californians for Population Stabilization (CAPS) posted my commentary, “Administration Poised to Provide More Jobs for Aliens.” My focus in both pieces is how the administration and how leaders of both parties are quick to promise to help beleaguered middle-class families by creating jobs, while simultaneously promising the providing still more aliens with lawful status and permission to legally work in the United States. However, the United States admits more authorized foreign workers than the number of new jobs that are created. So many people complain about politicians who fail to keep their campaign promises. The facts I just noted make it obvious that the promises about creating more jobs to help struggling Americans workers and their families is a promise they will not keep- because it is a promise they cannot keep! We will take a hard look at how the immigration crisis and the administration's immigration policies force us to ask the question, “Why bother?” If you like the program- please tell as many folks about it as you can and join my “Bucket Brigade of Truth!” Democracy is not a spectator sport!

Hi Gang: Happy Friday! Since my program last week, FrontPage Magazine published my article, “Immigration and the Wage Race to the Bottom.” Tonight I will fill you in on just how deceptive all too many of our elected “representatives” have been on this issue. The Democratic debate this past week focused quite a bit of attention on this issue- it is now time to turn on the fans and blow the smokescreen that they spewed away. For the record, with just a few exceptions, the Republicans are no better about this issue- it is only that they use different language in a concerted effort to pull off this outrageous swindle! Also- on October 7, 2015 FrontPage Magazine published my article, “Syrian 'Refugees' and Immigration Roulette: How the government is recklessly playing with American lives.” Tonight you will find out how at least two U.S. Senators one a “Demoncrat” and the other a “Repugnantcan” want to change how the administration is proposing to deal with this threat to national security. If I didn't know better, I would think they are trying to garner the MVP Award from ISIS and al-Qaeda. Please forward the link to the podcast of my program to as many folks as you can, I am attempting to create a “Bucket Brigade of Truth.” Also- please make certain to get involved- “Democracy is not a spectator sport!”
