Tariffs imposed by the Trump administration have ignited a trade war, leading to significant economic repercussions for small businesses and the tech sector. The new tariffs, described as potentially the largest since World War I, have raised concerns about a looming recession, with estimates suggesting a 60% risk of economic downturn this year. The stock market reacted negatively, losing approximately $6 trillion in just two days following the announcement. Business leaders, including Restoration Hardware's CEO, have expressed shock at the immediate impact on their companies, with many small businesses facing funding freezes and staffing cuts.As small businesses grapple with the fallout from these tariffs, they are experiencing a surge in customer cancellations and increased financial vulnerability. The National Federation of Independent Businesses reports a decline in optimism among small business owners, who are now accumulating credit card debt and facing challenges in adjusting their supply chains. The Small Business Administration's decision to cut its workforce by over 40% raises further concerns about the support available for struggling enterprises. Meanwhile, the European Union is preparing to respond to the tariffs, potentially affecting major U.S. tech companies. The tech sector is also feeling the strain, with the International Data Corporation warning that U.S. tariffs could halve global IT spending over the next six months. Originally forecasting a 10% growth in IT spending, IDC has revised its expectations downward to 5%. The tariffs are expected to raise technology prices and disrupt supply chains, leading to increased costs for consumers. For instance, the price of the iPhone 16 Pro could rise significantly due to the new tariffs on Chinese goods, forcing companies like Apple to adjust their pricing strategies.Despite a solid jobs report indicating economic growth, the tech sector has seen a decline in job numbers, particularly in tech services and telecommunications. Microsoft has paused data center projects due to oversupply and is reassessing its investments in AI infrastructure. This cautious approach reflects broader concerns about the profitability of AI investments amid competition from lower-cost alternatives. As businesses navigate this uncertain landscape, the need for strategic adjustments in IT spending and supply chain management becomes increasingly critical for both small businesses and tech providers. This week we welcome back a treasured friend of this show, renowned design guru and the heartbeat of the Fab Five, Bobby Berk! It's been four years since we last talked to Bobby so we have a lot of ground to cover in this episode. Bobby tells us about the designers like Michael Graves and Isaac Mizrahi who he drew inspiration from early in his career. He tells stories about his humble beginnings with retail gigs at stores like Bed Bath & Beyond and Restoration Hardware – maybe part of what makes him so relatable? – and how his career as a designer blossomed from there. And with the holidays upon us, we also take the opportunity to ask Bobby about how he celebrates (or survives) the holidays. He offers some great insights on instituting some personal boundaries to maintain sanity that are not too late to put into rotation this year. *** Thought-provoking Quotes: “At my grandparents' A-frame cabin in Colorado, every square inch was red, and I mean R-E-D shag carpet and it looked like a whole gaggle of muppets laying on the ground….and I think I liked it. I remember laying on the ground threading my fingers through the carpet.” – Jen Hatmaker “I loved going to my friends houses where it was just cool and calm and nothing to look at. But honestly that's not what I'm drawn to anyway. My house looks like a rainbow exploded. I have a kelly green velvet couch, a gallery wall that has every single color. I've got some bat shit wallpaper going on. I've decorated it like I've never seen the color gray.” – Amy Hardin “I'm drawn to spaces that have life in them, I like color – I like it when a room is even outrageous. Whether or not I would exactly do that thing, I think, ‘I like where your head is at'”. – Jen Hatmaker “You're the CEO of your own instincts and design and if you love it, it's going to work.” – Bobby Berk Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Queer Eye for the Straight Guy - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queer_Eye_(2003_TV_series) Queer Eye - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queer_Eye_(2018_TV_series) Queer Eye on Netflix - https://www.netflix.com/title/80160037 Series 26: Episode 02: Queer Eye's Bobby Berk on the Fire Inside Us All - https://jenhatmaker.com/podcasts/series-26/queer-eyes-bobby-berk-and-the-fire-inside-us-all/ BobbyBerk.com - https://bobbyberk.com/ Right at Home: How Good Design Is Good for the Mind: An Interior Design Book by Bobby Berk - https://amzn.to/3A7TjXT When Jen met Bobby in Mexico - https://www.instagram.com/p/B5HMYkUASvc/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== Tripointe Homes Style Finder Quiz - https://bobby-berk.tripointehomes.com/style-finder/ Michael Graves - https://michaelgraves.com/ Michael Graves Target Collaboration - https://michaelgraves.com/product/target-products/ Isaac Mizrahi Target Collaboration - https://www.target.com/b/isaac-mizrahi/-/N-s73qo Jen's master bathroom remodel - https://www.instagram.com/p/DB38zmHOrYU/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== Bobby at the 76th Emmy's - https://www.instagram.com/p/C__NYm2yz8G/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== RuPaul's Drag Race - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1353056/ Celebrity Holiday Homes on HGTV - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1519269/ Guest's Links: Bobby's website - https://bobbyberk.com/ Bobby's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/bobby/ Bobby's Twitter - https://x.com/bobbyberk Bobby's Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/BobbyBerkOfficial Bobby's TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@bobby Bobby's Pinterest - https://www.pinterest.com/bobbyberk/ Connect with Jen! Joining the show this week is someone who rejects normality in his pursuit to disrupt the hospitality industry, and who uses hospitality as a tool for preservation. Please welcome to the show, Author of the book “More Escapism”, and Director of Bensley Studios, Bill Bensley!Bill sits down with Host Dan Ryan for an enlightening conversation on the intersection between hospitality and conservation. Bill shares the importance of understanding the natural site you're building on, the benefit to training a local talent pool, and how his paintings build houses. Bill also shares some of the work the Shinta Mani Foundation has done including building over 150 houses and 1800 water wells, and funding local conservation projects. Takeaways: Hospitality involves sharing the deep knowledge of a place through architecture and design. A good project should always reflect the culture and the environment in which it is based. While much of hospitality is focused on sharing new experiences, it also needs to be focused on protecting the local environments. Through the revenue generated at a hotel, conservation programs should be put in place. Understanding the idiosyncrasies of natural sites is key to successful projects. Embracing and respecting Mother Nature's beauty is crucial in landscape and architectural design.Budget is a key component of any project, and when clients come in with big dreams, balancing those two desires can be tricky. To alleviate this, strong communication allows you to educate clients on what can realistically be achievedThe best way to learn about a site is to physically spend time there before you start designing. By sketching on site, you get new perspectives and up close details that may not be accounted for on a first pass render. If you are building a hotel in an area with a limited talent pool, training local citizens is a strong strategy. This approach both develops a local workforce for the hotel, and offers local communities the chance to learn new skills and find employment. Quote of the Show:“Even though I'm a pretty darn good architect, no matter what I put on that site, it's never gonna be as good as what Mother Nature has already given us.” - Bill BensleyLinks:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/billbensley/?hl=en LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/bill-bensley-336984b3/ Website: https://www.bensley.com/ Website: https://shintamanifoundation.org/ Book Link: https://thamesandhudson.com/more-escapism-hotels-resorts-and-gardens-around-the-world-by-bill-bensley-9780500024683 Shout Outs:04:20 - Shinta Mani Wild: https://shintamani.com/wild/ 07:50 - Cal Poly Pomona: https://www.cpp.edu/ 08:05 - Intercontinental Danang: https://www.danang.intercontinental.com/ 08:06 - JW Marriott Phu Quoc: https://www.marriott.com/en-us/hotels/pqcjw-jw-marriott-phu-quoc-emerald-bay-resort-and-spa/overview/ 08:08 - Rosewood Luang Prabang: https://www.rosewoodhotels.com/en/luang-prabang 15:57 - Capella Ubud: https://capellahotels.com/en/capella-ubud 18:31 - Coleman: https://www.coleman.com/ 23:29 - Shinta Mani Mustang: https://shintamani.com/mustang/ 23:58 - Conde Nast: https://www.condenast.com/ 25:27 - Hôtel de la Paix26:40 - Park Hyatt Siem Reap: https://www.hyatt.com/en-US/hotel/cambodia/park-hyatt-siem-reap/repph 28:58 - MOCA Bangkok: https://mocabangkok.com/about-us/ 31:58 - Shinta Mani Foundation: https://shintamanifoundation.org/ 37:32 - Baker Furniture: https://www.bakerfurniture.com/ 38:04 - Restoration Hardware: https://rh.com/us/en/ 38:18 - Jim Thompson: https://www.jimthompson.com/en 38:39 - High Point Market: https://www.highpointmarket.org/ 44:36 - Jim Thompson House: https://jimthompsonhouse.org/ Ways to Tune In: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPXApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1sAmazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419

Exoticos, wrestlers who dressed in drag and served as comic relief in lucha libre, won over audiences thanks to Saul Armendariz (aka Cassandro). He's the subject of a new biopic. The Federal Trade Commission and 17 states are suing Amazon, alleging that it holds a monopoly on online retail. This comes after the DOJ sued Google recently. Some 13,000 UAW workers are off the job, demanding better pay and more job security. Their key issue: the shift from gas powered-vehicles to electric. New furniture is often made with cheap, flimsy materials, even those from West Elm and Restoration Hardware. Where can consumers find reliable, affordable options?

Joining us for a wide-ranging interview on how a more than 100 year old retailer stays relevant is Greg Hicks, CEO of Canadian Tire. We start with some history, tracing the evolution of one of North America's most successful retailers from its modest beginnings as a tire shop to today's diverse portfolio of store formats, powerful private brands, and financial services, comprising over 1,700 locations. While Canadian Tire is rather unique in its iconic position in Canadian culture and dealer-based business model, their embrace of "connected retail" and how they stay customer-centric through an intense local focus contains incredibly valuable lessons for all retailers regardless of product focus or wherever they might be located. Greg, who was named the "Canadian Retailer of the Year" by the Retail Council of Canada earlier this year, also shares some of his key leadership principles, including how to balance pursuing short and long-term priorities. But first, as usual, we kick-off with a fast-paced review of the week in retail news, including mostly depressing earnings reports from a diverse set of retailers including Dollars General, American Eagle, Saks, and the brand formerly known as Restoration Hardware. In stark contrast to last week's episode, Tractor Supply escalates its commitment to a winning course of action by picking up the pace of its store openings. We close wth more disruption in the disruptor space as Draper James, the Reese Witherspoon founded clothing brand, gets acquired. Our interview with TSC's Hal Lawton. About GregGreg Hicks was appointed President and CEO of Canadian Tire Corporation (CTC) in March 2020. With a strategic mindset, tremendous commercial acumen, and the ability to build high-performing teams who deliver exceptional results, Greg has proven himself to be a world-class and purpose-driven leader. Building on the iconic Company's more than one hundred years of success, Greg has aligned the enterprise to a clear Brand Purpose that We Are Here to Make Life in Canada Better and is driving sustainable, long-term growth that delivers value for all CTC's stakeholders. Prior to this appointment, Greg was President, Canadian Tire Retail (CTR), CTC's largest banner, with more than 500 stores across Canada. In addition to overseeing all aspects of CTR's business, Greg was accountable for its global operations, eCommerce initiatives and its valued relationship with Canadian Tire's Associate Dealers. Greg is relentlessly focused on bringing customers the products they want and need to make life in Canada better. He built a world-class Owned Brands portfolio delivering over $4B in sales in 2019, and led the acquisition of Party City's Canadian business, adding a new trip-driving category and attracting a new customer segment to CTR. Previously, Greg served as Group Senior Vice-President, Consumer Products & Retail Experience, CTR, where he oversaw its General Merchandise and Automotive businesses and was also responsible for managing Store Experience, Store Operations, Product Sourcing and Quality, including the management of CTC's Pacific Rim offices in Asia. Greg was instrumental in transforming Canadian Tire's assortments for Life in Canada, including a renewed focus on Owned Brands, style and design, and new levels of product quality. He has been integral to the Company's focus on disciplined performance management. With more than 20 years of retail experience in senior leadership positions, strong management and merchandising experience, Greg has a proven ability to lead teams to success. Before joining Canadian Tire, Greg was the Chief Operating Officer at TSC Stores where he supervised all of TSC's business operations. Greg has also advised and worked with large multi-national retailers on the development of Canadian strategies. Greg holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Ontario and an Honours Business Administration degree from the Richard Ivey Business School. He is a member of CTC's and the Business Council of Canada's Boards of Directors and was previously a Trustee for CT REIT and the former Chair of the Retail Council of Canada. Shares of Restoration Hardware posted their worst day since the start of the pandemic after issuing a big warning on the state of the luxury housing market. But is this a canary in the coal mine over the strength of the consumer? Plus shrink has been a big issue for the retail sector of late, and we've got the numbers on just how concerned we should be. This is Matt Reustle and today we are breaking down Restoration Hardware. The average person would call RH a furniture company but RH is a company where the CEO feels as important as the business, and CEO Gary Friedman has aspirations well beyond selling furniture. To break down RH, I'm joined by Drew Cohen of Speedwell Research. You may remember Drew from our breakdown of Floor & Decor. We cover how Gary Friedman took Restoration Hardware from the brink of bankruptcy and has built it into a brand with luxury aspirations. We go deep on the business model, why has RH been leaning into this in person experience despite a massive e-commerce boom, the reality of interior designers, inventory management, and orchestrating a supply chain when you sell monstrous couches. There's a lot to talk about here. It's a fascinating business with a fascinating person sitting at the middle of it. Please enjoy this breakdown of RH.
