"Let me start by saying I would like to be considered the most trusted name in podcasting. However, as it stands currently, that would be Michael Barbaro. That's fine, I'll be his co-host. Move over Sabrina Tavernise, here I come." ~Doug SandlerManaging Clients: Strickland and Doug's ExperienceStrickland and Doug discussed their experience managing a recent client meeting and calming the clients down. They also reviewed previous discussions with Ashley and a two-hour meeting focused on resolving complex issues. Doug shared his defensive reaction during the client meeting, which he hoped didn't come across as rude. Strickland pointed out that Doug might have overstepped in his defense and misinterpreted what Strickland had said. They also touched upon their different approaches to handling clients, with Strickland being more confrontational in emails and Doug in meetings. They ended the discussion reflecting on how they handle clients they want to fire versus those they want to keep.AI Summary Discussion in ZoomDoug and Strickland discussed the AI companion, Summary, in Zoom which provides a summary of the topics discussed and action items from meetings. Doug expressed appreciation for the feature and its learning ability with usage. However, Strickland pointed out that the AI sometimes includes irrelevant details. Both agreed on the overall benefits of using the feature. Doug also recommended Zoom's automated scheduler, praising its affordability and functionality, and suggested that non-regular Zoom users might find it worthwhile to add for a fee if needed.Podcasting Practices and DemandsDoug and Strickland discussed their experiences with podcasting, which they have been doing for over seven years. They talked about the demands of podcasting, and Doug presented a list of the top 10 actions real podcastors do every day. Strickland disagreed with several of these items, arguing that they did not align with their podcasting practices. They also touched upon the topic of networking and content planning but did not delve into details. The host of the New York Times podcast discusses the ways modern politics have transformed the media landscape. For many American news consumers, Michael Barbaro's voice is a defining element of the modern era. As a host of the New York Times podcast The Daily, Barbaro speaks to an audience of more than 3 million listeners, delivering insights into the biggest national and international stories. That success wasn't guaranteed. When Barbaro and the rest of the team behind The Daily started it in 2017, they were introducing a novel way to experience the news: hearing from reporters about their stories and how they reported them, or directly from the people in the middle of the stories.  For this episode of the Crosscut Talks podcast, Crosscut Now host Paris Jackson talks with Barbaro about the reasons that formula produced one of the most influential and impactful news sources today.  In this conversation, recorded April 25, 2023 as part of the Crosscut Ideas Festival, Barbaro shares his thoughts on the responsibilities and challenges of this kind of platform during such a tumultuous time, with distrust in the media at an all-time high. This conversation was recorded April 24, 2023. The Teen Mental Health Crisis: How Do We Respond?

The BreakPoint Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 6, 2022 4:56

Teen mental health has never been this bad.   As New York Times journalists Michael Barbaro and Matt Richtel discussed last week on The Daily podcast, we're facing an unprecedented crisis in teen mental health. Mere decades ago, the major threats to the health and well-being of young people in the West were nearly all external, such as illness, car accidents, risky sexual behavior, alcohol, or smoking. Today, the greatest threats to the health and well-being of young people are internal. As Richtel reported, in 2019, 13% of all adolescents reported having a major depressive episode, a 60% increase from 2007. Teen suicide rates, which had been stable for nearly a decade prior to 2007, “leapt nearly 60% by 2018.” In 2019, the American Academy of Pediatrics announced,  “Mental health disorders have surpassed physical conditions as the most common reasons children have impairments and limitations.”   The factors behind this tsunami of depression, anxiety, and self-harm are many, one of which is the internet. In 2017, Dr. Jean Twenge of San Diego State University noted that the spike in adolescent mental health problems reached a crescendo in 2012. That year, the percentage of Americans who owned smartphones surpassed 50%. Exposing developing brains to an overwhelming amount of social information, she argued, was contributing to a massive, unprecedented uptick in mental health issues.   On one hand, social media has brought the near constant experience of social comparison to the developing minds of 8-, 9-, and 10-year-olds.  On the other hand, the sheer amount of panicked, hyperbolized, and truly frightening headlines a student must navigate is unprecedented in human history. We might forgive students who are convinced the world is completely out of control.  Richtel and Barbaro also noted other factors in the podcast. For example, the average age for the onset of puberty has become earlier and earlier since the 1980s, especially for girls. Experts are unsure as to exactly why this is the case, but there are plenty of correlations having to do with early exposure to sexually explicit material, fatherlessness, and family breakdown. Whatever the cause, the impact is real.   In the face of this exploding mental health crisis among young people, the demand for care is outpacing the number of trained counselors and psychologists. Pediatricians and emergency rooms have become first responders. As Richtel observed, “Every night, in emergency rooms across the country, there are at least 1,000 young people spending the night waiting in a room to get to the next level of care where they can be helped.”   More and more frequently, medication is seen as the only answer. While an important tool, Ritchie notes why that is far from adequate. “We are prescribing medications in the absence of dealing with… fundamental structural changes that we have not addressed as a society.”  In every generation, followers of Christ have seen protecting and caring for vulnerable children as a crucial part of their calling. Today, children are vulnerable to radically changing social conditions, harmful ideas about their minds and bodies, the loss of institutions crucial to their health and well-being, and a barrage of bad news.    The first step in fulfilling our calling is, in the words of my friend Dr. Matthew Sleeth, to Hope Always. Children need the truth about life and the world, about themselves and God, and we can give it to them. Of course, parents must limit and help guide children in their digital interactions, as nearly all experts recognize. But this is not merely a crisis of media: It's a crisis of meaninglessness. That's one reason a Harvard psychologist writing in Scientific American argued that “Psychiatry needs to get right with God.”   To that end, we've developed a new Colson Center Educators course taught by Dr. Matthew Sleeth to equip parents, pastors, and educators, with the tools to meet the current crisis.   Also, tonight, is the latest in our Lighthouse Voices series. “Despair, Mental Health, and the Crisis of Meaning: How Christians Can Speak Life to a Lost Culture” is a live event featuring Dr. Ryan Burkhart of Colorado Christian University. To register for the live event in Holland, Michigan, or the livestream, visit Colsoncenter.org.  Christians have an obligation to care. When we see the brokenness of the world around us, we are to imitate the work of Christ. In His name, we can be a force for good in our lifetimes, and, God willing, reverse the tide.

Apple considering a podcast subscription in Apple One? I hate the idea...and feel like I'd just listen in Spotify or elsewhere.  But the carrot might be that Apple could pay podcast creators for their content if they make it exclusive.  I'm skeptical -I'm only paying for something if it's REALLY worth it.  For example, I already pay for YouTube TV, Netflix, and more...I'm not likely to drop another $10 or $15 a month on another subscription.  Meanwhile, Apple has announced they will Spotlight more independent podcasters, good news from those worried about corporate behemouths taking over the space.  Here's a nice roundup from James Cridland of PodNews. https://podnews.net/update/apple-podcast-subscriptionsApple is also beginning to test versions of Apple Podcasts and Apple Music on Windows.  That would be nice, to not have to use iTunes on my HP laptop.  https://9to5mac.com/2021/01/14/apple-working-to-release-music-and-podcasts-apps-on-microsoft-storeSome former Conde Nast Audio employees have written an open letter trashing their former employer for how they were treated.  They allege long hours, low pay, poor communication, and essentially being taken for granted.  My take - you get out what you put in.  Like anything, audio production can be done right, or it can be done on the cheap. Last Saturday and Sunday were the NFL's new expanded "Super Wild Card Weekend," featuring (much to the chagrin of my wife) THREE games on each day.  While the NFL has had to adapt during COVID, so have the the television networks.  Due to Coronavirus concerns, NBC's Mike Tirico did the play-by-play of Saturday's Tampa Bay-Washington game from home in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  Then, on Sunday afternoon, CBS's Tony Romo did the color commentary side from his home in Dallas.   In both of these cases, you had announcer teams in separate locations, describing very fast action simultaneously.  And I don't know about you, but I don't think either broadcast missed a beat.  If they hadn't announced these setups in the pregame, I wouldn't have even known. What does this have to do with your podcast? If two broadcast partners can describe a football game from remote locations, you can easily do a high quality podcast the same way. You may not have a national television network's budget, but there are now a number of different online recording platforms that will record your audio on your local machine, free of internet buffering, THEN upload it to match your cohosts.  I've long been a user of Squadcast, but I also know folks who use Zencastr and others.  And some folks still use Zoom.  Now I think of Zoom as a last resort, but some people are comfortable with If you're going to use Zoom, make sure you use the "original sound" option and, if you're going to edit the audio, be sure to record everyone on a separate track. You'll thank me later. For folks who want to record a video copy of their podcast as well, apps like StreamYard and Riverside are gaining popularity quickly.  And Squadcast is rumored to be adding video this month.Pandora worth a BILLION less, due to music royalty issues. Sorry, SiriusXM. https://www.billboard.com/articles/business/9508785/siriusxm-pandora-royalty-costs-impairment-expense/?utm_source=podnews.net&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=podnews.net:2021-01-11Update: Told you last week about Breaker joining Twitter.  Now it turns out their TEAM is, but the Breaker app itself has been acquired by Los Angeles based Maple Media: https://blog.breaker.audio/the-breaker-team-is-joining-twitter-f8c1721d66c6Finally, podcasting is not a free for all. What you say and do - both on and off "the air" have consequences.  By now you've heard that YouTube banned Steve Bannon, and President Trump was kicked off of basically every platform out there. This week, Cumulus Radio threatened to fire any talk show hosts that perpetuate misinformation about the 2020 Election. The big drama in podcasting surrounds the team at The Daily from the New York Times. Two years ago, they did a riveting mini-series, released on Saturdays, called Caliphate, which was the story of a radicalized Canadian turned ISIS fighter.  The only thing wrong with the story - it wasn't real.  In an interview published December 18th on Caliphate's feed, Michael Barbaro sat down with Times head honcho Dean Baquet, who said his organization was duped - the supposed ISIS fighter made it all up.  The interview seemingly owned up to the organization's mistakes, explained what happened, and what they will do better.I didn't hear the interview this week, a month later. Why? Yes, it was in the Caliphate Feed, but not in The Daily's feed, where the podcast was repeatedly promoted.  Seems the Times wanted to create separation between The Daily and Caliphate, despite the fact that Caliphate was produced by the team at The Daily, which includes Lisa Tobin, now engaged to Michael Barbaro, and Andy Mills, who has had a bevy of #MeToo allegations levied against him in recent weeks.  And perhaps most egregiously, there are reports of Barbaro privately encouraging reporters to back off their stories on the SNAFU.   I once had a boss say, "You Eff up, you Fess Up."  And while I'm a huge fan of The Daily, it seems they really missed the mark here.  Again, behavior matters.https://www.npr.org/2021/01/12/955873886/public-radio-stations-rebuke-times-for-ethical-lapses-related-to-caliphate-podca?utm_source=podnews.net&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=podnews.net:2021-01-13If you'd like help with your podcast, I've now added video recording to my services.
