In this episode of one of the best podcasts for those preparing for military transition, we dive into the life of Erika Browning, a former Marine Officer who navigated military transition to become a successful nurse and podcast host. Erika's story is not just about her transition from the Marine Corps to civilian life; it's a testament to the resilience, adaptability, and determination that defines our veterans. As an air traffic controller in the Marine Corps, Erika developed skills and a work ethic that would later serve her well in her nursing career and as the host of the Black Sheep Nurse Podcast. Erika's journey begins in the small town of Paris, Texas, where her early life was marked by a deep sense of patriotism and a desire to serve, influenced by her father's service as a Navy Corpsman in Vietnam. Despite not growing up with an intention about joining the military, Erika's path took a pivotal turn when she decided to join the Marine Corps, a decision that would shape her future in ways she never imagined. Her military time as a 2nd Lt, highlighted by her role in air traffic control, provided her with unique challenges and experiences, from the rigorous training at Quantico to the deployment in Iraq, where she played a critical role in establishing airfield procedures in austere conditions. Transitioning from the structured world of the Marine Corps to civilian life, Erika embarked on a new mission to pursue a career in nursing. After years working in settings like the ER, today she is a Case Manager and a Life Care Planner. Her story is a powerful illustration of the skills and values instilled in military veterans and how they can be translated into successful civilian careers. Erika's dedication to helping others, honed through her service in the Marine Corps and her work as a nurse, is further amplified in her role as a podcast host. On the Black Sheep Nurse Podcast, she provides a platform for nurses to share their stories and insights. Her resilience and tenacity resonates with veterans and first responders, offering guidance, inspiration, and community to those navigating their own transitions. Erika Browning's story is a powerful reminder of the strength, versatility, and value that military veterans bring to our communities and the civilian workforce. Her journey from the Marine Corps to nursing and beyond is a testament to the enduring spirit of service and the importance of planning and preparing for life after the military. It's just feedback that you have to change your plan because it's not working.' Rob Metcalfe's guiding principle is that leadership is not just an individual pastime; rather it needs to be embedded at all levels within and across organisations so those closest to the need can meet it in an aligned and autonomous way. This belief stems from his career in the military where alignment between Headquarters, Operations Rooms and the person on the ground is so vital, whether on conventional or alternate activities. The strength of this belief was forged in both peacetime activities and operational theatres that included the Falklands War and various roles in Northern Ireland.Since then, he has dedicated his career to enabling leadership at every level through consulting, facilitation, training and coaching. He encourages people to think and respond through the lens of self, others and the system, proactively and consciously choosing where their focus should be. This is achieved by creating clear goals alongside simple habits and routines that enable consistency between a person, team or organisation's inner and outer games. This experience includes 14 years as CEO of LIW, expanding the organisation from start up to global leadership consultancy, preceded by 14 years as an officer in the Royal Marines Commandos. More recently he spent 3 years as a Partner with Denali Venture Partners and he now operates as an associate and investor to his previous organisations, as well as an independent consultant to a small number of other purposeful organisations across sectors and throughout the world. He is motivated by organisations that have a positive impact and has recently concentrated on working with the UN World Food Program across Africa and the Middle East including working with leadership teams and operational leaders in Yemen, Iraq, Sudan, Syria and Somalia. He also works with the Kids Cancer Project in Australia who are dedicated to saving childrens' lives though investment in cancer research.Rob and his team held the world building abseil record in 1992 for scaling to, and abseiling from, the upper deck of the CN Tower in Toronto, alongside a team from the Canadian School of Rescue Training. He was also “Mentioned in Dispatches” during his service, acknowledging that this was due to the efforts of the leaders and the people he had the good fortune to command.Rob sees how neuroscience is proving what was previously only a belief about good leadership practice. Many of his top tips are based on this truth. His top tip for your reflection is to “do whatever you want but know what you are doing”. He picked this quote up from someone else and has since observed that it is often not the case! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

EA - About my job: "Plans Officer" by Weaver

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: About my job: "Plans Officer", published by Weaver on September 10, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. I've been a plans Officer for the United States Army Reserve since 2021. People have no clue what reservists do and much less what "Active Guard Reserve" Soldiers do, and I see it's Career Week, so here's my job. Also I'm shamelessly stealing Lizkas format, so thank her for me writing this. Note that anything written here is my opinion and does not represent the department of defense, or any US Government agency. My background & how I got here I studied Computer Science in college and graduate into the great recession of 2008. After not getting the exact job I wanted (Marine Officer), I went to the Army recruiter and they gave me the option to be an Army Reserve Quartermaster Officer. I wanted something more active, but since Officer Candidate School was very competitive I wasn't in the top. I served part time as a Platoon Leader, Company Commander and Company Executive Officer. I interviewed with a different unit to change my branch to Civil Affairs, transferred to the unit and then served there as a Battalion Logistics Officer (S4) until I got called to go to first deploy, then school. My small school team of four Captains placed in the top six(Commandants List) of our approximately 60 person class and I was a Civil Affairs(CA) Officer after about 8 years. I credit my time working alongside CA officers as a large part of how well I did. At the same time I worked as a state department contractor full time. I also was going through Nursing school for most of it, though I didn't make it through. During my deployment, I was always trying to quantify how much we were doing and I had problems doing so. I read books like Dead Aid and Toxic Charity, trying to get a sense of how to 'do international development' and 'foreign aid'. You might think that this is why I joined EA. Nope. My writing partner made me read Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality and then, yes you can guess the rest. I got picked up for a 3 year tour of AGR and decided to put my civilian career on hold and see if I liked it. What I actually work on There is a very specific scope of things that only I do, mostly long range planning, facilitation, writing policy and working on strategy/prioritization for my organization. This includes everything that is mandated for the unit I work for to do to what is directed at a local level for us to do. Most of my work is office work, over various lovely software, and some of it is field work. Here is what I do normally: Field questions from people inside the unit Answer Requests for Information (RFIs) from higher echelons or sister units Write Operations Orders and iron out short term plans Be the telephone between two organizations that need to talk. I also run several meetings that are ad hoc or weekly dependent. I've had to work with a lot of people and I have met so many good people. It's not EA, but they all want to make a difference. Reflecting on the Role I opted into a very specialized career field in an already specialized group. I love the people and the unit culture is great, but they ask a lot of the part timers. Some things I value: I'm expected to work independently. If the work is done, then it's done. I'm not waiting around for someone's input normally. I get to work with top performers regularly. I get to mentor a lot of junior Officers and Enlisted, which is a big draw. Some things that can be hard: I'm not in charge, I just work here. Even though I plan a lot in advance, sometimes the commanders will choose to take a different path, upending a lot of my work. There's a lot of things that need to be on a regulatory timeline that I can not change. This is fine, except when people try to get around it. Some Skills I develop in this job: Lan...

Its good to have friends that connect you with amazing people. My friend Kelly Cardenes connected me to Buddy in early march. The level of Brillance he has is amazing. On this episode we talked about taking calculated risks on yourself. Starting the business. Have the right partner in your corner and much more. Edward (buddy) Rushing is a retired veteran of the Navy. He is a real estate investor and helps other military and former military build a life they love . He recently wrote a book on the how too as well. Edward “Buddy” Rushing was born in Galveston, Texas. He graduated high school in 2000 and received his commission from the United States Naval Academy in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering. He was commissioned as a Marine Officer and deployed to Afghanistan three times and Southeast Asia on a Marine Expeditionary Unit while stationed overseas in Okinawa. He then graduated from the Naval Postgraduate School with a Masters in Information Technology Management. In his final duty station at the Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters he began to help his Marine friends buy rental properties in Memphis, and it launched a business called White Feather that has now spread across the country. White Feather's mission is to help military members and their families create Financial Freedom and it does that by educating and empowering them to invest in Real Estate. In his Real Estate career, Buddy has purchased and sold hundreds of single family properties, apartment complexes, vacation homes, investment RVs, and even dry lots of land in Florida. He has personally invested in nearly $250,000,000 worth of Real Estate deals as both a primary investor, General Partner, and Limited Partner. His Real Estate Investment Accelerator has trained over 300 students, who have created businesses and built Real Estate portfolios all over the country. As of 2023 there are only 500 members of White Feather, but this small group has purchased just under $1,000,000,000 worth of rental Real Estate collectively. White Feather continues to grow in both members and opportunities, but the commitment to each member remains until that person is Financially Free, no matter how long it takes. Buddy is married to a gorgeous woman named Kimberly, who has helped him build White Feather every step of the way, from driving nails into a roof on a blistering August day in Twentynine Palms, to sleeping in the closet of an investment property she was painting so she could finish the painting before the tenants moved in the next day. They have two precocious children who are too young to realize they are going to grow up rooting for the Chargers and buying investment properties in their spare time. He now runs White Feather out of a renovated Tuff Shed in his backyard in California www.whitefeatherinvestments.com LI: https://www.linkedin.com/company/white-feather-investments/FB: https://www.facebook.com/whitefeatherinvestments?mibextid=ZbWKwL

Episode SummaryBen Reale is the Founder of the personal training group, Condition One Fitness & Nutrition. He's a Marathon runner, licensed attorney, and a former Marine Officer who has led more than 6,000 one-on-one training sessions and 600 small group classes. He is an expert in thoroughly evaluating someone to determine their ‘movement baseline,' incorporating individualized corrective strategies into specific training programs as needed. Today, Whitney and Ben talk about making exercise a habit and how to overcome and work around all the potential life obstacles that can get in the way of making running a habit. They touch on rewards, ‘gaming your brain,' and everything that supports making running a habit, like good eating, good sleeping, rest days, and strength training.Episode SponsorRunner Click Pro – https://pro.runnerclick.com/Key Takeaways01:00 – Whitney Heins welcomes Ben Reale to the show who shares his unique career trajectory, including his time as a personal trainer and a Marine09:44 – Habit formation and making sustainable changes by taking it slow15:39 – The power of consistency and overcoming life obstacles20:35 – Finding your ‘Why,' outcome-based goals, and behavior-based goals32:00 – The effectiveness of rewards and ‘gaming your brain'40:16 – Bright spots and other tools for making running a habit46:41 – Whitney thanks Ben for joining the show and lets listeners know where they can connect with himTweetable Quotes“I think that the big takeaway is that if people are in that situation and they've come up with a Plan A and a Plan B, and they gotta get thirty minutes in, or whatever they're trying to accomplish for a run, if it's consistently not happening, then it's like, ‘Hey, that's ok. It's just feedback that you have to change your plan because it's not working.' And I think that's a powerful piece too because being able to break away and almost from a 30,000 foot view just look down on it and say, ‘Well this is not working so I need to change it' is important.” (16:32) (Ben)“I think at the end of the day, if it is a priority to you, you're gonna find a way to get it done in some way, shape or form.” (19:50) (Ben)“So a lot of times we'll break things down in terms of outcome-based or behavior-based goals. And so, if your outcome is to run the NYC Marathon, that's great. We can delve into why you want to do that, but then we also want to take into account the behavior-based goals that are gonna be required to ultimately get you to your outcome.” (24:45) (Ben)“I think the rewards can be the most effective when you have intention behind them and some specificity.” (32:23) (Ben)“Maybe you're training for a race, maybe you've got a nagging injury, maybe you're trying to institute strength training into your program. Looking at your bright spots on either a weekly or monthly basis and then picking out what went really well that's specifically related to something that's difficult and then asking. ‘how can I do more of that,' is key.” (40:30) (Ben)“I think, generally speaking, if you're trying to change something, whether it be lifestyle, nutrition, fitness, if you're trying to get started with running, break things down as small as possible and think about what you can do on your worst day.” (44:28) (Ben)Resources MentionedWhitney's LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/in/whitney-heins-02ba3b5The Mother Runners Club – https://www.themotherrunners.com/Ben's Website –

Stuart Scheller served in the Marine Corps as an infantry officer for seventeen years. His five deployments included combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. When he was a Lieutenant Colonel, Scheller served as a battalion commander at the Marine Corps School of Infantry (SOI). In the summer of 2021, U.S. forces withdrew from Afghanistan. The withdrawal was poorly planned and hastily executed. The Taliban took over the entire country and surrounded Kabul airport. As Marines scrambled to secure the airport, a suicide attack caused the tragic deaths of 13 U.S. servicemembers. Frustrated by these events, Stuart Scheller felt compelled to speak out. He made a public video that criticized military leadership. Shortly after releasing the video, he was fired from his job as a battalion commander. He then publicly resigned from the Marine Corps and continued to be critical of both the military and Marine Corps leadership. As a result, he was placed in the brig and court-martialed before leaving the Marine Corps in December 2021. The public nature of his call for accountability stirred a lot of controversy.   In the interview, we discuss his call for accountability as well as the following: What motivated Stuart Scheller to join the Marine Corps How he became disillusioned with the overall strategy in Afghanistan  Moral courage and when it's time to speak up What was going through his head as he prepared to make his first public call for accountability How the actions of General John K. Singlaub in the 1970s influenced his criticism of General McKenzie Stuart Scheller's contrarian views to include his thoughts on General Mattis The movie Black Hawk Dawn, the publication Task & Purpose, and books by Malcolm Gladwell Scheller's current political causes to include his support for Senate candidate Don Bolduc in New Hampshire Check out the videos: Stuart Scheller's first video, second video (from the bus), and third video  Stuart Scheller's website: https://authenticamericans.com/  Follow him on Twitter: @stuartscheller and Facebook Check out his book: Crisis of Command: How We Lost Trust and Confidence in America's Generals and Politicians Check out my recent article on accountability at The American Mind. When Natasha was in sixth grade, her parents sat her down and told her that if she didn't do something to make her stand out, she wouldn't go to college. At the young age of eleven, she made up her mind to be the best of the best in order to affordably go to college. When she enrolled in the Naval Academy, reality hit hard when she realized her public education failed her, she was different and not accepted among her peers or superiors. In this same season of life, the unexpected passing of her mother would require Natasha to become her family's main provider. How do you overcome when the odds seem stacked against you? On this episode of Where Ya From?, Author, retired Marine Officer, and inspirational speaker Natasha Sistrunk Robinson shares her unbelievable story of what it looks like to endure through hardship and cling to the only thing that is true and constant—faith in God. Guest Bio: Natasha Sistrunk Robinson is the president of T3 Leadership Solutions, Inc., as well as a sought-after international speaker, executive leader, and mentoring coach with over twenty years of leadership experience in the military, federal government, church, seminary, and nonprofit sectors. She's also the author of many notable books including A Sojourner's Truth: Choosing Freedom and Courage in a Divided World.  Natasha is also host of the podcast A Sojourner's Truth: Conversations for a Changing Culture. She is the Visionary founder and chairperson of the 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Leadership LINKS, Inc., where she cultivates a multi-generational network of influencers who offer leadership education that facilitates impactful living, character and spiritual development. She holds a doctorate from North Park Theological Seminary and is a graduate of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary Charlotte and the US Naval Academy. Natasha has proudly served her country as a marine corps officer and a federal government employee at the Department of Homeland Security. Notes & Quotes: “It's one thing to have unjust laws on the books that should never be on the books. It's another thing to have just laws on the books, but they have to be enforced.”—Natasha Sistrunk Robinson  “I'm like, God, I need you to go because the people who normally go, to do all the things, to show up in such a way, they're not going to be able to do that for me. So I need you to do that and be that for me. And if you do that, I will serve you. And so that was kind of the start of my own personal journey.”—Natasha Sistrunk Robinson  “You know, the question is are leaders born or made? And I say both, right? I think some leaders are born. I think some are made. And I think, whether you're born or made, you all need training, you could always get better.”—Natasha Sistrunk Robinson “I know God uses anybody. He uses broken vessels, so to speak, all the time and imperfect people all the time. But I also, I just take that as a try to stay humble in that, but also stay in awe of God in that.”—Natasha Sistrunk Robinson “Disciple making is not just about programming. It's not just about Bible study. It's not just about going to church. It's not just about activity. I look at disciple making in the way that Jesus models for us with the twelve men we call apostles and the women that accompanied them on the journey of investing large amounts of time with small groups of people, because I believe that's where we're going to have the greatest impact.”—Natasha Sistrunk Robinson Links Mentioned: Natasha Sistrunk Robinson ministry website Natasha Sistrunk Robinson book: A Sojourner's Truth Visit our website to sign up for emails. The Crew welcomed a long-anticipated guest this week as Matthew Betley joined the boys to discuss his wildly original new novel, THE NEIGHBORHOOD. His Logan Pike series has long been a Crew favorite, and now Betley takes us on a blood-pumping ride through THE NEIGHBORHOOD. “Die Hard in a gated community, Matthew Betley's new book, The Neighborhood, is a stand-on-the-pedal, runaway-train thrill ride of the year. Ever find yourself looking down the wrong end of a gun barrel? That's exactly what this relentless book will do to your heart rate. Don't just buy it. Armor up!” —Chris Hauty, national bestselling author of Deep State and Storm Rising. For most of the citizens of Hidden Refuge, it's an ordinary Friday night in an ordinary American town. But when men claiming to be police officers show up at their doorsteps in the middle of the night, ordering them to evacuate for their own safety, it's only the beginning of a long, dark night that will prove to be anything but ordinary. Unbeknownst to most of its residents, Hidden Refuge contains something that very dangerous men desperately want, and they are more than willing to kill to get it. But Hidden Refuge contains another secret—Zack Chambers, a seemingly unassuming programmer and suburbanite family man who is far more than meets the eye. And while Zack dearly hoped that he'd never again need to use the deadly skills he'd acquired in his former life, when push comes to shove, he'll do whatever it takes to protect himself and his neighbors. Even if it means taking on a small army of trained killers with only his wits and a ragtag group of allies. Before the night is over, the blood of the innocent and the guilty alike will be shed, old scores will be settled, and shocking twists will be revealed. Propulsive, brilliantly plotted, and packed with Matthew Betley's trademark blend of gritty realism and edge-of-your-seat action, The Neighborhood is a can't-miss thriller. Matthew Betley is the author of the Logan West Thrillers and a former Marine Officer of ten years. Trained as a scout sniper platoon commander, an infantry officer, and a ground intelligence officer, his experiences include deployments to Djibouti after September 11 and Fallujah and Iraq prior to the Surge. A New Jersey native who considers Cincinnati home but now resides on the East Coast, he graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, with a BA in psychology and minors in political science and sociology. -------------------------------------------------- Don't forget to subscribe to The Crew Reviews, hit the "LIKE" button, and leave a comment.
