It's that time of year again as digital media editor Warren Frey and correspondent Peter Kenter delve into the spooky and ghoulish side of construction with a look at their favorite structures that may or may not be host to unexplained apparitions and forces beyond life and death. Peter interviewed Haunted Walks director Jim Dean for an upcoming story about infrastructure hauntings around Ontario, including the tale of the tunnel monster of Cabbagetown, a legend from 1979 about a Gollum-like creature hiding underneath Parliament St in Toronto, a haunted bridge in Scarborough, and an investigation into the paranormal properties of the CN Tower. Warren also spoke to ghost stories and odd structures from Edmonton, including the University of Alberta, his alma mater, which sports both the spirit of a nurse wandering Pembina Hall and urban myths about the maze-like structure of the Biological Sciences Building, and spoke about the Winchester House in San Jose and Borley Rectory, allegedly the most haunted place in the entire United Kingdom. As is tradition, Warren and Peter also both gave their favorite haunted houses in literature and film to round out the podcast. You can listen to The Construction Record on the Daily Commercial News and Journal of Commerce websites as well as on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Amazon Music's podcast section. Our previous with Dr. Jon Callegher about attracting young people to the construction industry is here. Thanks for listening. DCN-JOC News Services

Courtney from the Haunts Jaunts podcast chats with Jim about a variety of spooky topics. They discuss intriguing reports coming in from The Haunting at Home. Including Courtney’s own experience. The reports pose questions about the nature of ghosts, reality and our perception. Of course, all this and more, with a good measure a ghost stories sprinkled throughout!
Jim Dean is the Creative Director of The Haunted Walk, a ghost tour company that operates in three cities in Canada: Kingston, Ottawa, and Toronto. During Spooky Season, he contacted me about trying The Haunting at Home Paranormal Adventure. I did it with a couple of friends and had a blast! Now the results are in. I was dying to know about one in particular: The majority of experiments, 74%, were conducted in a house or townhouse. 23% took place in an apartment or a condo. However, regardless of where the experiment was conducted, whether it was a house or an apartment, the percentage of groups reporting activity was the same: 67%. What was up with that? I said if I got a chance to ask him, I would...so I did! But we also had a chance to also talk about The Haunted Walk and other activities they offer --or will again once this pandemic gets under control. Among the other things we talked about was how The Haunting at Home is based on something they do on ghost hunts in haunted places. Including the Laurier House, where they also hold seances like a former Canadian Prime Minister, William Lyon Mackenzie King, did when he lived in the house. Jim likened it to a real-life Haunted Mansion, and that was all it took. I was sold. Covid Be Gone! I need to take a trip to Canada and see this place for myself! He also shared a ghost story involving two of the Haunted Walk's tour guides and an apparition at the Black Creek Pioneer Villag. One of the guides and a tour goer saw the woman in period clothing on the boardwalk up ahead of them, but the other guest and guide did not. I also got a chance to ask him about the Virtual Haunted Campfires they also did during Spooky Season, which I thought was really clever and collaborative. Jim is a phenomenal (and humble) storyteller. It was a great privilege to talk with him. If you previously weren't familiar with Jim before this, you can also hear him on the podcast he hosts: Haunted Talks. Guest Info To learn more, visit: https://hauntedwalk.com/. Help My Unbelief || Jim Dean by CalvaryTLH
“Before I ever got here, I thought a parking garage would be a great solution. And I know a lot of people in town have thought the same thing. We want to be very careful about what we do in Overton Park and with the Zoo, but there's new technology, things become more affordable in terms of what can constructed – a lot of people are working on these solutions, Mayor Strickland's team is working hard – and we're hoping to get that garage built… without paving any of the Greensward.” That's Jim Dean, almost a year into his job as CEO of the Memphis Zoo, talking to host Mark Fleischer about new solutions at work to resolve zoo parking issues that have been a source of friction for almost five years. The Memphis Zoo and its leadership team is one of the recipients of this year's Mojo of Midtown Awards, for taking the zoo in a new direction that is “bringing back the roar back to a Midtown landmark.” It is the largest and oldest institution in Overton Park, and with their new direction – which includes “hitting the pause button” on parking plans that would have paved 2 1/2 acres of the Greensward – supports the overall health and welfare of Overton Park as a whole. Join host Mark Fleischer for this candid conversation with Jim Dean as he talks about Midtown and his return to Memphis after a 40-year absence, and about the future of the Memphis Zoo under his leadership.

Ottawa in Ontario is the capital of Canada. This city has a high standard of living, low unemployment and a rich history being the historic home of the founding fathers of Canada. Within this city is located the historic jail known in previous years as the Carleton County Gaol. Like so many older jails, treatment here for prisoners was not always humane and men, women and children were housed together. The jail is now a hostel known as the Ottawa Jail Hostel, but something from the past still remains. Spirits still seem to roam the hallways and many of these entities are not happy.
