Ep. 120: Dr. David Burns - Feeling Good Yet?

Emotions are the heartbeat of human existence and the human drama that is full of anxiety, sadness, anger, fury, joy, or love feels like we are either riding a roller-coaster or floating gently in a boat that's in a calm and placid lake. Emotions that disrupt our relationship with the world require regulation, but conventional wisdom approaches might get us off track as we might train ourselves to either not feel the feelings or not react to them. On this podcast episode, father of the CBT-TEAM approach, author of the best seller “Feeling Good”, and host of the Feeling Good Podcasts, Dr. David Burns talks about why it is important to understand that all feelings are caused by thoughts and focusing on grouping emotions into positive and negative emotions may not serve us well, but rather redirecting unhealthy negative as well as unhealthy positive emotions can and will allow us to live our human experience to its fullest. About Dr. David BurnsDavid D. Burns, MD is an Adjunct Clinical Professor Emeritus at the Stanford University Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. His best-selling book, Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy, has sold more than five million copies worldwide. Many published research studies have indicated that 65% of individuals with moderate to severe depression who are given a copy of his book improve dramatically within four weeks with no other treatment. Dr. Burns has won many awards for his research and teaching. His weekly Feeling Good Podcasts will hit three million downloads this year. His latest book, Feeling Great, is now listed on Amazon.com and will be published in September 2020. He is also working on a new Feeling Great App that will feature two powerful new mood-changing technologies to show people how to break out of severe and mild mood slumps quickly. About Host, Sucheta KamathSucheta Kamath, is an award-winning speech-language pathologist, a TEDx speaker, a celebrated community leader, and the founder and CEO of ExQ®. As an EdTech entrepreneur, Sucheta has designed ExQ's personalized digital learning curriculum/tool that empowers middle and high school students to develop self-awareness and strategic thinking skills through the mastery of Executive Function and social-emotional competence.Support the show (https://mailchi.mp/7c848462e96f/full-prefrontal-sign-up)

From: Kevin Barry James, A while back, in one of the regular CBT podcasts, you recommended Google's new $160 wireless ear buds. I recall being surprised at your recommendation as at that time not only had that item not shipped but no reviewers had used it. Now that many reviews are indeed out, and they seem quite negative, I was wondering if you still recommend this item? Also, do you think it is a good idea to recommend something before you or anyone else has had a chance to use it? From: Brennen Kinch Hi I would like to get a Roku for Christmas but I am not sure which one would be the right one to get for Accessibility I listen to a podcast that was done on your site about a year ago that talked about Roku and its accessibility but a year has passed since the podcast was released so I guess what I am wondering is how has accessibility improved over the last year and what in your opinion would be the best model to get. From: Cruz Ramos Hello, my name is Cruz Ramos I have an account with you all guys but I forgot my username and password. I was also wondering if you except podcast from the public? I like doing podcasting. From: Erin Jepsen Do you know of a games-based SCREENREADER accessible software that teaches concepts like logic and programming skills? We have a windows PC, a Chromebook, a BrailleNote or an iPad with VoiceOver available to use. It needs to be basic and usable by a fourth grader. Please hit us with options!!! From: Scott Spaulding I need to replace my microphone for my podcast that I do from my iPhone. I use Spreaker, if that matters. Do you have any recommendations of units that aren't too expensive. I had an iRig mic cast previously. From: Syed Hussain Hi, This is Syed Hussain from India. I used VR head set recently. Thought I may share the experience here. How should I post here? Should I send it to you and get posted by you? From: Cuauhtli Padilla Arias Hi Cool blind tech! My name is Cuau, co-founder of Sunu. From: Kelley Armstrong Hi everyone, I just want to say thank you for putting all of this educational information out there! I have been a long time listener for years! This is my weigh in on the iPhone ten unboxing! You know I opted not to ever set up emergency sos because of the fear of accidentally activating the darn thing! I am one who has severe anxiety and sudden loud noises scare me! My family had an alarm system and I had a medical alert pendant! So did my mom and dad and my grandmother! I triggered mine accidentally and it scared the bejesus out of me! Sirens going off and lights flashing and the loud voice of emergency services! Never mind that the alarm system contracts are the hardest things to get out of and I don’t recommend it! I am really surprised that apple made this feature so easily accessible! The 911 system has been overloaded with calls that were accidentally made! However I’m glad to know what it sounds like! There should be a prompt before a call is sent out! Hit okay or cancel! Something apple should have took more time to think it through! I think the watch would be better suited for a feature like this! From: Dr. Lester I am looking for a smartphone to replace my iPhone 7, in your pro opinion do you think that the android screen reader “talkback” is better then Voice Over for the iPhone at this time? Before I lost my vision I was user of android and at that time talkback was a pain to use…. I would be grateful for any help you could be to me in this. From: Henk-Jeroen van Groningen schinkel Thank you for your wonderful Podcasts. Although the products you’re presenting aren’t all available in The Netherlands, I love to hear about the tech possibilities for blind folks. And it was your podcast that made me buy the Sunu band. This will arrive soon. And I am the First to experiment in this country. Go on with your wonderful shows. And perhaps, once I can join your podcast. But First I have to buy some good microphone and other stuff. ;-) Kind regards, Bilthoven The Netherlands

From: Charlie Smith I started listening to the podcast about 2 years ago, and have been hooked ever since. This podcast is most definitely in the top 5 best podcasts on my iPhone. Anyway, just writing to encourage you all, to keep up that great work, have as much fun as possible, and above all, keep up that laughter. From: Pat Hornell I just heard your latest Fan Mail podcast, and I took note of the comment someone made about not having a separate podcast for the Cool Picks. Personally, I like to have these separate podcasts the way they are right now. Sometimes I like to listen to the VIP, including the Cool Picks. However, there may be a Cool Pick that sparks my interest, and so I may come along later and just want to hear the Cool Picks without listening to the entire VIP podcast. So I hope you continue to do exactly what you are doing on this one. If anybody else doesn’t like the redundancy of the separate Cool Picks podcast, they can always delete that one. On another note, I just recently purchased a Google Home, and I have found it very advantageous to go to your web site and review all the podcasts and even the articles about the Google Home. They have been a great help for me to set up my Google Home device and also my Chromecast Audio devices. My next job will be to set up the Chromecast Ultra for my flat screen TV – not exactly 4K, but I am sure that will happen soon, as my wife, who is fully sighted, will surely want one of those soon. One point of caution I would like to mention, though, and it’s a minor one, but when you are doing the unboxing podcasts, make sure to keep tabs on your microphone. Most of the time, it’s pretty good, but there was one recent unboxing – I think it was for the Series 3 Apple watch, where Mr. Nelson got a little far away from his microphone, and so his voice became a little faint at times. Thanks for your fine podcasts. Keep up the good work. Your friend from the great White North, eh. From: Rebecca Skipper Are there accessible games designed for the Apple TV? From: Harry Brown Hi there, Just wanted to let you all know that cool blind tech is now on Alexa!!! Just enable the Anypod skill, then, just say, "Alexa, ask Anypod to play cool blind tech", and she will first, tell the listener what the show is about, then, play the podcast! From: Naomi Scott Hi, I heard your podcast on braille display/notetaker options and am wondering if any of you have any hands on experience with Blitab? There was talk of Blitab being commercially available and I think there is an ability to preorder, (though am not certain about that), and anyways I have been searching for stats and updates on the device and haven’t found anything recent. Their website doesn’t really make it clear as to which OS it runs, how exactly the braille cells operate and all the other information you would typically find on other products such as Braille Note or Braille Sense. I am interested in Blitab as opposed to the other options because apparently the user would have the ability to view an entire 15-or-so line page of braille at once, and the device is affordably priced. Even BrailleNote does not give the possibility of viewing an entire page before having to press the scroll button. I think a device where you could view an entire page at once similarly to how sighted people read on Kindle, is quite revolutionary. There may be braille displays out there with full page support (I don’t know), but this is the only device I have heard of that merges the capabilities of a tablet with the braille cell capacity of a full-page display, all in one device. and I am equally interested in the price as it apparently costs no more than a mobile phone, making it a much more available choice for people who do not have state/student programs to purchase the product. It could make braille tech access much more attainable in countries around the world that don’t have such widespread state sponsored support programs. I want to buy a braille device and am primarily interested in Blitab for its unique features. Does anyone at CBT have experience with the product? Any recent news as to its availability for order? What is it like to actually use the product? Does it have quality braille cells in terms of clarity? does anyone know the details of the stats for the device? Thanks! From: Michael Hello. Would it be possible for you to do a podcast discussing in greater depth the ElBraille note taker by Freedom scientific? I have not seen very many reviews of it online and I would like to learn more about it. From: David Keats Voice message

The CBT Team returns with another Fanmail show? Tell us if we should stay with the show title or if all of you can come up with a better name. Keep sending us your emails and messages from social media and we will read or play your feedback on our show. You can contact us via email to cbt@coolblindtech.com or call our new toll free number at 1-855-330-2665 anytime night or day. From Daniel Hawkins: Hello Cool Blind Tech, I enjoy listing to your podcasts and all the news you put on your site. My name is Daniel, and I am a AT trainer for a small CIL in southwestern Illinois. One struggle I have right now is printing Envelopes with addresses on it. As of now, I can go through MS Word to Mailing to Envelopes and put in delivery and return address. However when I print, there is a Manual feed dialogue box come up. My IT Director and I tried working on this. Botton line is that I can alt + c to continue in this inaccessible box. However, half of the time it does not work the way you want too. So, it have suggested to me get a label maker unit and print labels to stick on the envelopes. Do you guys know any accessible but reasonably priced label printer for home us for our consumers? How would you guys do Label printing? Thanks guys! From Dalton Lane: If I were to make a podcast for your team what kind of equipment would I need to use.  Also, could I use voice memos for my recording source? From Graham Langford,: Hi, I, like many other people, probably listen to your Podcasts on a Victor reader stream or on an iPad When you mention an app or a device would you be kind enough to spell out the name of either the Apple device as it is not always that obvious how it is spelled I'm so we can find it easily I trust this makes sense. From Beatriz Loeza,: Dear CBT, I am curious to know how the iOS 11 is treating you if you were brave and jumped into the beta program? I really want to check out the beta but I don't have a working computer so I can't back up and restore if I don't like it. From Lisa Godsey My husband, Michael Godsey, was recently blinded and has really enjoyed listening to your podcasts. Before his accident he was very "techie”, so your sight is perfect! He heard about the T-Fal ActiFry on your podcast, but is wondering how a blind person accesses the recipes to use it? Thanks for your help.

I have played around with it some but I'm still currently using an apex. My cool pick would probably have to be the braille note touch though. I enjoy exploring the different types of accessible peaces of technology. 2. From Richard Merryfield I'm working on a blind accessible game that is intended to both be fully playable for the blind, as well as offer a sighted player a unique mechanic. The goal is to try to give nearly an equivalent experience for both types of players. We want to use the game as a proof of concept to demonstrate that mainstream commercial games have the potential to have accessibility navigation implemented into their design. If this game is successful, our next step will be to create a generalized API that can be used in a wide variety of VR settings, ranging from video games to potentially even drafting software. You can download our game here. Make sure to enable accessibility mode by going into the config.ini file and changing access=0 to access=1. We are still building out a configuration application for the game. Sorry for the inconvenience. However, once you have accessible mode running you can experience it for yourself. Website 3. From Rebecca Skipper: Hi, What Android device would you recommend for someone who already uses an iPhone and just wants a tablet with a keyboard to learn how to use Android? I have an amazon Kindle Fire HD 6th Generation Tablet, but this is not the traditional Android setup. Should I invest in a Chrome Book or are there other affordable options? Thanks. 4. From Lisa McLaughlin Hi there, I was wondering if you guys could help assist me with my new android phone. It's running android marshmallow. I'm using talk back plus I've downloaded the eloquence text to speech. I would be grateful if you can give me some advice and support regarding navigating around the touchscreen. I have been an Apple iPhone user for many years and I now fancy a change. I did listen to the talk back Tutorialggo but feel to fully understand how to navigate around the touchscreen using the talk back gestures. I would appreciate any help that you can offer, many thanks, Lisa Mclaughlin 5. From Jimmy Musk I am looking to publish my article on your blog. Is there any opportunity. Please let me know the procedure? 6. From Rusty Hilliard: Love the site, and enjoy the podcasts. I am a full-time preacher, and thus in preparing sermons, use a lot of tech. Thanks for the info. The CBT Team would like to thank you for your feedback and emails. Although we are unable to reply to every email we read every email we receive. We have picked out a few of our favourites to reply to. From Leo Bissonnette: Interested in confirming if the VizLens is available in the App Store. I am in Canada and didn't find it. Or, is the app still in a beta testing stage where the developers might be interested in getting testers. From Bruce Huffman: I cannot find vizlens in the "iOS” app store. From Rebecca Skipper: Hi, Although VizLens is impressive, I think it would be more useful as a orientation aid to appliances allowing the user to reduce the amount of labels needed. Labeling, in my view, should be used in case the app malfunctions or the user loses Internet connectivity. I am a Braille reader and find tactile feedback more efficient than apps or screen readers when identifying products. From Elexis Repetto: I am looking for recommendations for a new computer that can run ZoomText. Every computer I have ever used it with has not been able to handle the software. I want to buy a desktop or laptop or Mac and would love some input. Also, if there is a better screen reader than ZoomText that you would recommend I am open. I am a low vision user and rely both on magnification and screen reading. I am not looking for the cheapest solution but rather the best. Thank you for such an informative podcast, I listen to every one that has tech which may apply to my situation. Row 8 Column 2 From Beth Rose: Hi, I saw the post about the 3D models which can be printed to help visually impaired students during sex education lessons. I work for BBC Ouch - the disability strand of the BBC - and thought it might be interesting to learn a little more about it. At what stage are you at? Have any students road-tested this idea yet? Who came up with the idea and was there a particular reason why they did? Are there any images you can send me of the various models? I'm also presuming that this is just a US-based project at the moment? If you could let me know the answers to the above questions or provide me with any extra information that would be really helpful, Thanks!

Nearby Explorer for iOS: Putting GPS to the Test

Spend a day with a member of the CBT Team as we review our first GPS app from APH. Hugo takes Nearby Explorer to work, a coffee shop, a restaurant and then back home for a walk around his neighborhood. From the App Store: Nearby Explorer by American Printing House for the Blind is a full featured GPS app designed for use by people who are blind. Instead of just providing directions, it describes the environment in ways comparable to reading signage or observing road characteristics. It uses onboard maps, so a data connection is not required, but if you have one, Nearby Explorer supplements the on board map data with crowd collected locations from Foursquare or Google Places. It includes complete maps for the United States and Canada which contain millions of points of interest. The onboard maps are over 4GB in size, so be sure the device you plan to use has enough available space before purchasing. Nearby Explorer works with any device running iOS version 9 or later, but if the device does not contain its own GPS receiver, like most iPads and iPods, you must use an external GPS receiver. All iPhones contain GPS receivers. Nearby Explorer works by letting you select from several different location related options about what to announce as you move. These include both typical items like street name and address, and specialized options like approaching streets, intersection configurations, and nearby places and the distance and direction to them. (All announcements are optional.) All of this information is shown on the home screen and is available at any time, but typical use is to adjust the level of announcements, then lock the screen and put the device away. This keeps both hands free and let's your preferred voice speak the characteristics of the environment as you move. You may also use the devices position and orientation to obtain additional targeted details such as pointing the end of the device to scan for businesses, even in a moving vehicle, or tilting it vertically to function as a compass, including a listing of streets in the indicated direction. This all works with the device locked, so one need not fuss with the touch screen while moving. You may even mark a point, then use the position of the device to get haptic feedback about that point's location. Nearby Explorer includes a transit feature that provides detailed mass transit schedules for over 60 metropolitan areas in the U. S. and Canada. It treats transit stops just like favorites and points of interest by announcing their name and relative position as you move, but in addition, transit stops add next vehicle stop time, direction of travel, and route name to the announcements. You can use the transit schedules to look up times or even follow a route. You may virtually move to any area in the U.S. or Canada and explore the road network, search, or use the transit maps for that area. For complete details about Nearby Explorer, see American Printing House for the Blind

Apple introduced NFC-based digital technology into their iPhone last year with the 6 and 6+, a technology which has been present in many other phones for a long time. The hardware allows you to make seamless purchases at supporting stores with only a touch of your finger on the home button. In this quick demo, we take a look at adding a card to the Apple Pay system, as well as making purchases at a sandwich store. Besides letting you enter in the details manually, there's another option that allows you to take a photo of your credit card when setting up payment sources. If it takes off in more places, Apple Pay could become a real threat to finger-happy purchases, while perhaps also shortening long lines in the process.
