After a hurricane upends everything, the void left behind—solastalgia—can be as destabilizing as the storm itself. In this episode of Storm Stories, we hear from Angie Bailey of North Carolina's Broadband Infrastructure Office on efforts to bridge the digital divide, ensuring communities aren't cut off when they need connectivity the most. And in Utica, Mississippi, Carlton Turner reflects on bringing internet access to his town while grappling with the social and political costs of digital expansion. How to Evaluate Broadband Access in Your Community: A 10-Step Guide for Local LeadersAccess to reliable and affordable broadband is essential for education, work, healthcare, and economic growth. Yet, many communities still struggle with slow speeds, high costs, and service gaps. If you're a community leader looking to assess broadband access in your area, here's how you can take action.1. Start with a Listening TourTalk to residents, schools, businesses, and healthcare providers about their internet experience. Are there dead zones? Is service too expensive? Does it support remote work and learning? Gather real stories to guide your efforts.2. Run a Community Speed Test CampaignEncourage residents to test their internet speeds using tools like the FCC's Speed Test app or Measurement Lab. This will help you compare actual performance against what providers advertise.3. Identify Areas Without ServiceMap out which neighborhoods have little or no broadband access. This may include rural areas, low-income neighborhoods, or places where providers claim to offer service but don't.4. Survey Households and BusinessesCreate a simple online and paper survey asking residents about their internet provider, cost, reliability, and whether they feel their needs are being met. Schools and libraries can help distribute surveys.5. Check Internet AffordabilityInvestigate broadband prices in your area and whether residents can afford them. See if people qualify for federal programs like the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) but aren't using them.6. Meet with Internet ProvidersSet up meetings with local broadband providers to discuss coverage gaps, speed concerns, and future expansion plans. Ask about any upcoming infrastructure upgrades or partnerships they might be open to.7. Look for Funding OpportunitiesMany state and federal grants exist to expand broadband access, such as the BEAD Program (Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment). Work with local government or nonprofits to explore funding options.8. Build a Coalition for ChangeBring together schools, businesses, healthcare organizations, and local government to advocate for better broadband. Strong partnerships can drive real improvements.9. Push for Policy ChangesIf outdated regulations or monopoly control are blocking better service, work with elected officials to explore policy solutions, such as municipal broadband or open-access networks.10. Keep the Pressure OnBroadband expansion takes time. Keep tracking progress, sharing updates with your community, and holding providers and policymakers accountable until real improvements happen.Support the show

Three, Ireland's largest mobile telecommunications provider, has been awarded a number of licenses by Ookla, a global leader in connectivity intelligence. The results are based on an analysis of tests taken using Speedtest in the second half of 2024. Securing their position as a 5G market leader, Three has been awarded Fastest 5G Network in Ireland for the fourth year in a row, Most Consistent 5G Network in Ireland, as well as winning the Fastest Mobile Network in Ireland for the fifth year in a row. Ookla Speedtest data supports that the elements driving Three's success in 5G technology is due to strong network investment, the deployment of new technologies, as well as the clever use of spectrum which provides both voice and data connectivity. To date, Three Ireland has invested over €2 billion in the development of its network, achieving 99% 4G population coverage and over 92% 5G population coverage - providing customers with the highest level of coverage available in the market and securing their position as industry leader. David Hennessy, CTO Three Ireland and Three UK, said: "Three Ireland is incredibly pleased to once again be recognised by Ookla as having the fastest 5G network in Ireland, as well as the most consistent 5G network. Three has invested significant resources into the development of Ireland's connectivity, achieving over 92% 5G coverage and 99% 4G coverage. As Ireland's largest mobile telecommunications provider, we are acutely aware of the demands and requirements for reliable connectivity, whether for remote working, studying, shopping or streaming. Three Ireland will continue to invest and advance its 5G network, providing customers with the greatest coverage, speeds and reliability available in the market." 5G connectivity gives speeds ten times faster than 4G, with lower latency and greater reliability - enriching all connectivity experiences from amplified gaming to increased streaming and download speeds. The adoption of and access to 5G technology brings considerable added value to Three customers in Ireland, enhancing their lives and how they choose to connect. Three Ireland provides 5G connectivity to all customers across all plans, reaffirming the company's commitment to providing exceptional value and ensuring customers have access to the leading technology available today. Three was also the first Irish operator to launch the next evolution of 5G, 5G Standalone, which has the potential to accelerate innovation across industries and unlock exciting possibilities for businesses and consumers. 5G Standalone is the next advancement of 5G technology - meaning the 5G network operates with a 5G dedicated core network, supporting enhanced speeds, providing minimal latency and enabling higher device density and capacity. In contrast, currently all 5G capabilities rely on a 4G radio coverage footprint and 4G core network, so while speeds are quicker and latency has improved, there is still a reliance on 4G. Two separate sections of your brain handle pleasure and pain, so this is where it can get challenging. Delayed gratification is challenging. But there are several benefits to not succumbing to an immediate reward. Better health, improved self-worth and overall long-term success with goal setting are just a few. Listen in as I share 4 ways to delay gratification. We're into week 4 of the Tiny Gappin' It Build Off series and I finally got to put my build on the ground to test it. The goal is top speed within the 90' x 12' area. I tested my speed and was a bit disappointed. We did extend the deadline to March 27th to allow for more testing and tuning videos so it isn't a one and done build. We realized it was looking like that was going to be the case and that didn't really lead to creativity in the builds. Also...Pablo fused his driveshaft and axle together and you have to order parts for these things...which adds days to the build time. Check out more on my latest build update blog: https://www.ccxrc.com/post/tiny-gappin-it-build-off-deadline-extended-i-blame-pablo
