WhatsApp Access Ends for Older iPhones & Windows on ARM Breakdown

On today's episode of Double Tap, Steven Scott and Shaun Preece tackle big questions around digital access, legacy tech support, and the future of computing for blind and low vision users. The episode opens with breaking news: WhatsApp has officially dropped support for iPhones that can't run iOS 15.1. This has serious implications for blind users and community organizations that rely on donated older iPhones to connect people through messaging. Steven and Shaun explore the broader digital divide and why it's becoming harder for people with vision loss to stay connected in an increasingly online world.Later, the duo shares a game-changing accessibility tip from friend of the show Sean Randall, who uses a standard label printer combined with Seeing AI's short text feature to make food and plug labeling more inclusive. It's a low-cost alternative to expensive Braille or NFC labeling systems and sparks a wider conversation about simple tech hacks that have big impact. In the second half, Greg Hayes returns to discuss Windows on ARM. Steven shares his experience running ARM-based Windows in a virtual machine and the compatibility issues he faced with scanner drivers and legacy hardware. Greg explains the benefits and trade-offs of the ARM platform—including battery life, speed, and application support—and how the industry is transitioning from Intel to more efficient ARM architectures. Is now the time to go all-in on ARM? The panel explores the risks, rewards, and practical advice for blind users navigating this shift. In episode 284 of iCantCU, I talk about another hiccup with my psoriatic arthritis meds—this time, the pharmacy wanted over two grand out of pocket. Spoiler: I said no. Taltz has helped a bit, but not $2,000-a-month helpful. So now I'm back on the hunt for something else that won't break the bank or mess me up with scary side effects. I also share some sad news: we lost Stan Ingram, a fellow blind entrepreneur in the Business Enterprise Program here in PA. That means one less BEP operator and a big question mark about what happens to his spot. Plus, my friend Ken's dad passed, and I send love to his family. It's been a rough week. In this episode of iCantCU, I talk about my recent trip to Baltimore for a National Federation of the Blind leadership seminar. The travel down was rough—high winds, delayed trains, and a soaked suitcase—but once I got there, it was an incredible few days. I met fantastic people from all over the country, learned a ton, and left feeling inspired (and maybe a little intimidated) by how sharp some of these folks are. I also get into how the trip lit a fire under me to do more back home in Pennsylvania. That's where Federation Focus comes in—a new weekly video series I started to keep everyone updated on what's happening in the affiliate. In this episode of iCantCU, I share a jaw-dropping moment when the director of a Pennsylvania state agency called me a four-letter word. Yes, really. It all ties back to my ongoing fight for transparency and inclusion in the Business Enterprise Program (BEP), which provides blind entrepreneurs with opportunities to run vending and food service businesses on government properties. Despite promises of reopening the program, Pennsylvania hasn't trained a new blind vendor in over five years. With the number of operators dwindling from 200 to just 20, and many nearing retirement, the program's future is in jeopardy. I break down the bureaucratic roadblocks, potential conflicts of interest, and the resistance to allowing public attendance at key meetings—including my own. I also discuss the upcoming PA Association of Blind Merchants Spring Fling on May 17 in Harrisburg. It's a chance to support blind entrepreneurs, network, and raise awareness. In this episode of iCantCU, I recount my journey to Washington, D.C., for the annual National Federation of the Blind (NFB) Washington Seminar. I share insights into the event's purpose—advocating for policies that support blind Americans—and my meetings with congressional representatives and senators. I detail the structured meetings, including conversations with Senator McCormack and staff from Senator Fetterman's office, emphasizing the importance of protecting hard-won rights under laws like the ADA. I also reflect on travel challenges, from navigating train stations to nearly getting on the wrong train to trouble with taxis. Despite not feeling my best, I make the most of the experience, participating in legislative discussions and a reception in the historic Kennedy Caucus Room—where Titanic hearings were once held. I also dive into personal highlights, like my long-awaited trip to Oohh's & Aahh's for mac and cheese, only to find my taste buds uncooperative due to illness. Wrapping up, I reflect on the importance of advocacy. Join me for a firsthand look at what it's like to be part of the fight for accessibility and inclusion. In this edition of the AppleVis Extra, David Nason speaks to Saqib Shaikh, a key member of the team behind Microsoft's Seeing AI, winner of Best App in the 2024 AppleVis Golden Apple awards.TranscriptDisclaimer: This transcript was generated by Aiko, an AI-powered transcription app. It is not edited or formatted, and it may not accurately capture the speakers' names, voices, or content.Hello there, and welcome to another episode of the AppleVis Extra Podcast. My name is David Nason and I am delighted to be joining you again to talk about the 2024 Golden Apple Awards.Today's focus is the best app category. We had 10 brilliant nominees in this category and they were One Password, Anytime Podcast Player, Drafts, Mona from Astadon, OKO, Cross Street and Maps, PixieBot, Seeing AI, Tapit Pro Audio Recorder, Todoist, To Do List and Calendar, and Voice Vista. So a great list of nominees there, very strong. Our runners up getting special mention are PixieBot and Voice Vista. So again, huge well done to them for being runners up.Our winner and a very familiar winner, I think it's their fourth Golden Apple, which is amazing, is Microsoft's Seeing AI.So huge well done to them. It's an app that's been around a long time and is still available in the App Store. If you search for Seeing AI from Microsoft. So yes, huge well done to Seeing AI for winning the best app, Golden Apple 2024.And to chat about it, I am delighted to be joined from the Microsoft Seeing AI team by Saqib Shaikh.Hello Saqib, thank you so much for joining me on the podcast today.Hi, thank you so much for having me.It's a pleasure to be here. And you're here because Seeing AI, I don't think for the first time won a Golden Apple Award for 2024 in the best app category, which is fantastic. So congratulations on that, first of all.Thank you.A great honor and actually a surprise. And it means so much because it's from the community. You know, there are so many awards from either the government or industry, but I think the ones from the community just mean that much more.Absolutely.You know, to be voted by the people who are using apps and there's, you know, a great range of apps nominated this year.So to top the pole is absolutely brilliant. And actually, before we jump into too much detail, maybe for the uninitiated, if there are any in our community, can you give us a quick rundown of what Seeing AI is?Good point.Seeing AI, we talked about it as a talking camera app or a visual assistant. It's a mobile app where you open it up and it uses the camera to tell you what it can see.And it has different modes for different tasks in your daily life from reading things to you, whether that's immediately or more slightly with formatting through to describing photos that you take or from your camera roll or from other apps, all the way through to very task-specific channels, as we call them, like finding something or exploring the world around you or knowing if the lights are on.Amazing.What do you do yourself on the team out of interest and are you there long?Have you been there, you know, part of Seeing AI from the start or can you…

In episode 280 of iCantCU, I share my experience traveling to New York City for Jane's apartment settlement. I reflect on navigating the subway, offering reassurance to those hesitant about using public transportation. Drawing from my father's advice—"Be careful, but don't be afraid"—I encourage everyone to embrace new challenges, whether in travel or life. I also detail my visit to Jane's studio apartment, describing its compact yet functional space in a desirable building. Post-settlement, we explored the city, visiting Grand Central Terminal, Fifth Avenue shops, and indulging in delicious food—including a memorable trip to Salt & Straw for ice cream. Beyond the trip, I touch on my recent participation in an accessibility panel and share insights on the importance of confidence in mobility, particularly within the blind community.  To be clear, though, the person afraid of the subway is fully sighted. Tune in for a mix of travel stories, personal reflections, and valuable accessibility insights. In episode 278 of iCantCU, I start off with some good news from the fantasy football world. Out of the three leagues I played in this year, I won two championships, including the NFB Students fundraising league with my team Ziggy FC. Yahoo's fantasy sports app, while not perfect, is a standout example of accessibility done right. Unfortunately, not every organization gets accessibility right. I also talk about AbilityLinks, a job site for the disabled community. Their emails included a QR code with critical information, but it wasn't screen-reader-friendly. For an organization that claims to serve the disabled, especially when blindness is considered a disability, this felt like a real miss. It's frustrating, and I wonder why they didn't just use a simple link. On the personal side, I've been working hard to migrate my website, iCantCU.com, to a new host. Along the way, I rediscovered some old email accounts, including one I'd set up for restaurant coupons. It's funny to think about how much has changed since I started using the domain nearly 19 years ago. Looking ahead, I'm heading to PodFest in Orlando, my first since 2020, and then to Washington for the NFB's Washington Seminar. I'm excited for what's to come—stay tuned! In this packed episode of iCantCU, I dive into holiday highlights, culinary adventures, and upcoming plans. First, I share my experience attending a French macaron-making class with Liz and Jane at Sur La Table. While the process was visually intensive, the instructor, Elliot, made it incredibly tactile and inclusive for me, which was both surprising and heartwarming. Though I'll never make macarons solo, it was a fun and memorable family activity. I also recount the hilarity of Ziggy's new oversized Christmas pickle toy—a three-foot plush he's been dragging around the house like a proud pup. Seeing his excitement brought back the joy of giving. What Christmas isn't complete without Nazis? I tell the story about what Jane's friends spotted in the image of me and Ziggy. Spoiler alert: it was the shadowbox with my dad's POW papers and the spoon he ate with while being held by the Germans in World War Two Looking ahead, I discuss plans for the 2025 NFB State Convention and my goals for expanding creative projects. In this episode of iCantCU, I share my experience traveling to Harrisburg for the Blind Merchants Holiday Party and fundraiser, reflecting on the challenges of navigating public transportation as a person with very limited sight. Timing was a major hurdle, from the unpredictable delays with CCT to coordinating a group of 17 people on an Amtrak train. I discuss how small inefficiencies can snowball, highlighting the importance of time—our most precious resource. Once in Harrisburg, the event was a success, with 65 tickets sold, great food, a DJ playing festive music, and lively auctions and raffles that raised over $6,000. I was impressed by how smoothly everything ran, despite a few hiccups, like managing auction payments and losing a check. I also recount some funny moments, like my guide dog encounter with a cracker I dropped and the dictation mishaps that never fail to amuse (or frustrate). I wrap up by reflecting on the importance of accessibility and time management while balancing humor and frustration. The fundraiser was a rewarding reminder of what our community can accomplish, even when obstacles arise. In this special episode of Double Tap, Steven Scott and Shaun Preece are joined by tech guru Michael Babcock to tackle listener questions. As always, the conversation is packed with tips, tricks, and a bit of chaos.  Steven kicks things off by talking about his switch from VMware Fusion to Parallels for running virtual machines on macOS. He shares how it's made his life easier, especially with keyboard shortcuts and overall functionality. Meanwhile, Michael offers his own insights into navigating macOS and Windows simultaneously without losing your mind.  One listener asks for advice on marking frozen foods in a chest freezer without braille. The team dives into solutions like tactile markers, elastic tags, and tech options such as PenFriend and NFC tags, with plenty of laughs along the way about the quirks of cooking when you can't see what's in the freezer.  Michael also takes on a great question about learning VoiceOver gestures on iPhone. If you've ever struggled with swipes, taps, or understanding the rotor, he's got you covered with recommendations like Apple's built-in VoiceOver tutorial and the VO Starter app.  Headphones are another hot topic. From bone conduction options like the Shokz OpenRun Pro to Apple's AirPods, the guys break down what works best for audiobooks, walking, and staying aware of your surroundings. They even touch on budget-friendly alternatives that won't break the bank.  Steven revisits his take on the Apple Watch after recently upgrading. Spoiler alert: He's found new love for its navigation features, health tracking, and Apple Pay convenience, though he admits it's still not perfect for everyone.  For listeners curious about video accessibility, Michael explains how to use the Seeing AI app to make sense of videos and suggests ways to convert formats if needed. They also troubleshoot transferring files between iPhones and the Victor Reader Stream, exploring options like USB-C adapters and SD card readers.  Mac vs. PC debates resurface as the team discusses whether switching to macOS is worth it. Michael shares his tips for tackling the learning curve, while Stephen reflects on how the Mac has become a powerful tool in his workflow.  The episode wraps up with advice on how to amplify specific voices in noisy environments. Whether it's using the iPhone's Live Listen feature with AirPods or investing in a personal listener device, there's plenty of practical info for making family gatherings (or avoiding them!) a little easier.  It's another jam-packed episode full of tech, accessibility tips, and laughs!Get in touch with Double Tap by emailing us feedback@doubletaponair.com or by call 1-877-803-4567 and leave us a voicemail. In this episode of iCantCU, I share highlights from the National Federation of the Blind of Pennsylvania's state convention in Erie and reflect on the experience of turning 60. The journey to Erie was an adventure in itself, with a nine-hour bus ride filled with trivia games, camaraderie, and the occasional logistical hiccup.  Once there, I was happy helping others find their way around the venue and assisted with setup for various events. Despite challenges, the convention was a resounding success, featuring engaging presentations, a tech seminar I moderated, and valuable networking opportunities. I also discuss memorable moments from my milestone birthday celebration, which coincided with a meetup at Brauhaus Schmitz in Philadelphia. From a custom cake to great company, it was a special way to ring in a new decade. As I gear up to serve as convention chair next year, I reflect on lessons learned, including better organization and leveraging volunteers effectively. While Erie offered a stellar venue with outstanding service, its distance makes it a rare host for our conventions. In this powerful and educational episode of It Happened To Me, we sit down with Rachel Schreiman who turned her personal struggle with vision loss into a mission to support others. Rachel shares her story of resilience after experiencing two episodes of Non-Arteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy (NAION), a rare and debilitating eye condition caused by insufficient blood flow to the optic nerve. These episodes left her with significant central vision loss, but instead of giving up, Rachel embraced a new path.   Rachel Schreiman is a CPA and musician who holds an MBA from the University of California, Irvine. In 2019 while working as the Controller for a trade association in Washington DC, she suffered two episodes of Non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), rendering her legally blind with significant central vision loss. After receiving rehabilitation care and training she started a new "career" devoted to others with low vision. She now works for Dr. Suleiman Alibhai OD, a low vision rehabilitation optometrist, and as a Resource Navigator for the Prevention of Blindness Society of Metropolitan Washington (POB). Both of these positions allow her to give back to others with low vision by sharing information about resources and demonstrating how to use many of the devices, assistive technologies and applications available that allow users to live full and independent lives.   Key Topics Discussed:   The Onset of NAION:  Rachel recounts the initial episode of NAION in 2019, the symptoms she experienced, and her journey to diagnosis. She describes NAION as a "stroke in the eye," explaining how lack of blood flow to the optic nerve led to significant vision loss.   Risk Factors and Triggers for NAION: Rachel discusses possible risk factors, such as sleep apnea and cardiovascular issues, which can contribute to the development of NAION. She shares insights into lifestyle adjustments and precautions she now takes to help manage her health.   Navigating a Second Episode:   Five months after the first NAION episode, Rachel suffered another in her other eye. She reflects on the impact of this second event, the rapid response from her medical team, and the steps she took to prepare for further adaptation to vision loss.   Diagnosing and Treating NAION:   Rachel describes the challenges of diagnosing NAION, which can be easily mistaken for other conditions such as multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, or stroke. She also explains the diagnostic process and the types of specialists who are essential for accurate diagnosis and care.   Adapting to Vision Loss: Rachel opens up about the difficult decision to stop driving and the profound impact it had on her independence. She shares the changes she made in her home and daily routines, along with the support she received from her husband and family, which helped her navigate life with low vision.   Coping Strategies for Low Vision:   Rachel reveals the practical and emotional strategies she uses to cope with vision loss, from using assistive technologies to finding new hobbies and ways to stay connected with her passions.   Advocacy and Empowerment in Low Vision Care:   Through her roles with Dr. Alibhai and the POB, Rachel describes her work in educating others about low vision resources, providing hands-on training with assistive devices, and guiding patients and their families through the journey to independence. She also highlights the services POB offers for those with low vision and encourages listeners to seek support early in their vision loss journey. Not a lot of problems can be solved from AI. There's a small portion of them that can be solved with AI. From those problems, does the data exist? Is the data of good quality? And sometimes the answer is no. Even if the data exists, do we have access to the data? Can we get access to the data? We will usually work on the partners' data sets, not our data sets, meaning that the data set will not leave the partners, but sometimes there's no way to have a data-sharing agreement in place, where it makes it impossible to share the data. Once we have that part, the next question is, do we have the right partner? We are not subject matter experts on the point that we work. We are subject matter experts on AI, but if we're working with pancreatic cancer, we need, on the other side, a group of people that are experts on pancreatic cancer, for example. In that case, we try to partner with people who are subject matter experts and are world-renowned.Data needs to be representative19:55: Data is a fundamental part. I would say the majority of the success or failure will happen because of the data set, and investing in understanding the data set—making sure that there's no bias—is a critical part of the work. It's tough; it's difficult. Data needs to be representative. What are the do's and don'ts for companies looking to launch initiatives for good?36:40: I would love more companies. So, this is something that we discussed with my team. Whenever we see other competitors creating something like we do, we feel proud because that would be a success for us in many ways. So I would encourage everybody to use that technology for good. That's something that I think is certainly worth the do's and don'ts; I think it's important to make sure that this organization remains clear that its objective is on the noncommercial part of the philanthropic aspect of the company because, within this organization, the objective is to be helping society and making it clear for the people that are working there. That is something that is helping us a lot. Our end goal is to help society, and I think I would encourage other companies to do it.Is there a possibility of a zero bug project?21:09: Some of these problems require people to really ask the question: how is this model going to be used correctly? And that takes experience. More importantly, I think it's crucial that in many of these cases, we need to be ready to find those problems and fix them, correct? And I think that this is like software development in many ways. The chances of having a zero-bug project are zero, correct? Projects that have zero bugs are projects that people don't use. What I think is important as an organization is to find those problems, be proactive in trying to find them, and be really fast in solving them.

The highlight of this episode is my visit to the Pennsylvania Governor's Mansion for "Lori Listens," hosted by PA First Lady Lori Shapiro. I, along with other members of the NFB of PA, got to talk about web accessibility issues with folks from the state. We gave feedback on a Commonwealth website and were surprised to see changes made almost immediately—proof that they're taking our concerns seriously.  I dive into the everyday frustrations we face when websites and apps aren't accessible—like unlabeled buttons or pages that trap you behind pop-up ads. These things can make simple tasks take forever. But it felt good knowing that someone was listening and committed to improving things. What do I mean when I say an app or a website is not accessible? I give a couple of demos of sites that are not accessible and provide a workaround for one of them.  Show notes at https://www.iCantCU.com/273 Links Mentioned (product links are affiliate links so that I may earn a commission.) In this episode of iCantCU (#272), I dive into a whirlwind, last-minute trip to Pittsburgh.  It was a bit of an adventure, starting with a long train ride and a stay at a very questionable hotel. I mean, the smell alone deserves its own segment! But despite the less-than-ideal accommodations, I made the most of my one full day in the Steel City. Between navigating a tricky Lyft ride, representing the NFB of PA at the PaTTAN Tech Adventures event, and even catching a Pirates game, I squeezed a lot into just 24 hours. Spoiler: tickets to the ballgame were only $10!  Listen to hear how I turned a chaotic day into a memorable one, complete with unexpected kindnesses and, of course, a story about some very smelly hotel carpets. Hold your nose and join me as I recount it all!  Show notes at https://www.iCantCU.com/272  Links Mentioned (product links are affiliate links so that I may earn a commission.) In episode 271 of iCantCU, I talk about two state-level meetings I attended and the adventure of navigating a new train station without any help from Amtrak. First up was an OVR meeting where, despite being focused on disabilities, they had nothing accessible for blind folks—no Braille, no large print, nothing. Frustrating, but not surprising. I also attended a BEP meeting, where the training program has been on hold for over four years. It was disheartening to hear there's no clear timeline for reopening, especially since blind people rely on these opportunities to run businesses. On the travel side, I figured out the Paoli train station on my own, got to Harrisburg, and had a much better hotel experience than last time. Plus, I talk about my fantasy football leagues (still holding on!) and preview the upcoming NFB of PA state convention in Erie. It's a packed episode, so stick with me, and as always, thanks for listening! Hello our favourite tech geniuses! We start with some good news. Yes, Mali, the Bernese Mountain dog who was missing for 2 weeks, has been rescued from a 61-metre-high cliff edge on an island off the coast of Donegal. She ran off during a storm but now she has been reunited with her humans and went home for a big dinner and a snooze - yaaaay!!   Óran has had enough of the terrible Irish summer and has decided to move to The Netherlands where it always seems to be warm. Clodagh has her patient face on. Meanwhile, we've got news on Seeing AI's object detector. (Maybe it'll help Óran find the sun?) And Jan is looking forward to IOS 18. Will Siri be any better...? We sure hope so, cos she's pretty useless right now!   Our guest this week is a talented young woman named Maura Moore-McCune from County Meath in Ireland. Maura is here to tell us about a mobile app she is developing called Vision Impaired Person's Moving Object Detector (VIPMOD) which can detect nearby moving vehicles. This will be especially handy if you want to check it's safe to cross at a junction, or if you are not sure if you can hear an approaching electric vehicle. Maura was invited to present her work on VIPMOD at the ‘MIT AI & Education Summit' in Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, where she won the top prize for Community Impact – congratulations Maura! If you would like to be a beta tester for this app, email: vipmod.info@gmail.com with your details. Maura would be delighted to have you involved when beta testing starts.   Clodagh has news on some calendar dates worth noting, like Colour Blindness Awareness Day on September 6th, and a 24-hour inclusive design event on September 12th.   So, enjoy hanging out in Belfast while your cruise ship gets serviced, don't tell that Russian spy whale where you hide the chocolate, and instead make your way safely to the sunny side of the street while listening to Blind Guys Chat. 17 out of 20 electric scooters prefer it to being in stealth mode.   Links in this show: Email to become a beta tester for the VIPMOD app: vipmod.info@gmail.com MIT App Inventor coding system: https://appinventor.mit.edu/ SciFest: https://scifest.ie/ CYTI at DCU: https://www.dcu.ie/ctyi Colour Blindness: http://www.colourblindnessawareness.org/ Inclusive Design event: https://inclusivedesign24.org/2024/ Support Blind Guys Chat by contributing to their tip jar: https://tips.pinecast.com/jar/blind-guys-chatRead transcript

I also touch on using AI tools for accessibility, the thrill of connecting with other podcasters, and the importance of independence in overcoming the unique challenges of traveling while blind.  My story highlights the struggles and triumphs of navigating the world with limited vision while remaining determined to succeed in a sighted world. Using my phone's assistive tech, I navigated the exhibits, but not without a few challenges.  I also talk about my thoughts on working in an open office—spoiler alert, it's not ideal for someone who relies on listening rather than seeing. On this episode of The Vergecast, senior producer Will Poor explores the AI-tinged worlds of Dries Depoorter. Depoorter has built all manner of quirky and provocative installations and online experiments. There's a clock that tells you how much of your life you've already lived; a phone charger that only works when your eyes are closed; a mobile chat app that you can only use when your phone has less than 5% battery. His most eyebrow-raising work, though, is around AI and surveillance. In his projects Depoorter takes publicly available webcam footage from around the world, and uses it to stalk celebrities, catch jaywalkers in the act, keep politicians honest, and generally make you wonder about your own privacy and anonymity. We talked with Depoorter about how he creates his work, how he thinks about the future of AI, and how he responds to the people who see his art and want to turn it into commerce. It's a wild conversation, so check it out above. To see all of Dries' work, head over to his portfolio. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Cal talks with the futurist who tells us that artificial intelligence is going to be embedded in everything we do -- and that means many aspects of the world around us will be moving at an accelerated pace. His book, Superconvergence, looks at how AI will transform our lives as it is embedded in genetics and biotech. It could mean living longer, feeding billions and supercharging the economy. We don't want to think about the downside – which is why we must. Jamie's got a Ph.D. from Oxford, a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School and he was the opening speaker at the 2023 Dubai future forum. He's also an ironman triathlete in his spare time. When Cal left the conversation, he felt like his IQ had spiked. You may feel the same.
