"I see AI as the next iteration of technology that may shape how accountants are doing the work," he says. "But ultimately, the work of the accountants is the same." What AI does is create space for bookkeepers to spend more time on the things that are genuinely hard to automate: being a trusted advisor, being a real business partner, and — as Alex puts it — shaking hands and looking someone in the eye. Those things don't disappear no matter how good the models get. The Spreadsheet Comparison Worth Remembering When the fear of replacement comes up — and it does — Alex points to a pattern that has played out before. When spreadsheets arrived, people predicted mass job losses in accounting. Instead, the profession grew. Some small business owners did start managing their own five-line chart of accounts, and some will use AI to handle basic recordkeeping themselves. But that's not your client. "As accountants, it puts you in a very unique position to elevate yourself in terms of your AI skills and demonstrate to businesses, I know how to use this tool exceptionally well." The expertise gap has always been the value. AI doesn't close that gap — it widens it in your favor if you lean in. A Crawl, Walk, Run Framework for Getting Started Alex is practical about adoption. Start by picking one AI tool you've already heard of — maybe tried once — and use it for everyday tasks: drafting a client email, writing a performance review, planning a trip. Get comfortable at that level before adding complexity. Walking looks like connecting your AI to your Slack, email, or call recordings and asking it to synthesize information — summarizing client pain points before a proposal, for example. Running is letting AI handle a meaningful portion of your day-to-day operations. "Just get started," Alex says. "Over time, get more sophisticated, and then over time, let it be the primary operating system for you." Handling Data Privacy the Right Way Financial data demands careful handling, and Alex doesn't gloss over it. His checklist for vetting any AI vendor: confirm they are SOC 2 Type 2 compliant with a reputable auditor (not a quick rubber-stamp), verify that data privacy agreements exist between your vendor and the underlying model providers like OpenAI or Anthropic, and look for a genuine philosophy of data protection — not just a claim on a website. For teams that are still nervous about connecting client data to AI tools, his advice mirrors the crawl-walk-run approach: start by using AI internally with your own team's Slack and shared drives. Build confidence there before expanding to client-facing workflows. A Bigger Demand for Accountants Is Coming Alex's outlook for the next one to five years is genuinely optimistic. He sees AI acting as a catalyst for what he calls a "Cambrian explosion of demand for accounting." As business models shift from billable hours toward fixed-fee engagements and technology enables firms to handle more clients with the same headcount, he expects more businesses — not fewer — to seek out qualified accounting professionals. "Accountants can get more done with less, driving an influx of demand for what accounting firms can provide." The firms positioning themselves now, building AI literacy and deepening client relationships, are the ones that will be ready to capture that demand. But on a micro-budget production, the mindset of “that's not really my job” can be radioactive. Your crew needs to be down for the chaos you're about to unleash.But of course, be fair and be reasonable; pay what you can — either in cash or points — but take the time to find a crew that's truly in it with you and willing to wear multiple hats. But here's the caveat, as the filmmaker, you must always be the hardest-working person on set.Find your audience where they already are.The Dream Eater team built buzz through festivals and the online horror community, most notably TikTok's HorrorTok — a vibrant ecosystem of horror influencers and fans. Birthright citizenship is a fundamental right that has been enshrined in the Constitution for over 150 years. In the wake of the federal government's assault on this core principle, Assemblymember Alex Lee authored legislation affirming the California Legislature's commitment to birthright citizenship. Assembly Joint Resolution (AJR) 5 passed the Senate Floor on September 2, and heads to the Assembly Floor for a final vote. On his first day in office, Trump issued an executive order to deny citizenship for children of non-citizen parents. The order, which remains blocked by legal challenges, would strip an entire class of people of the right to vote, work lawfully, access federal benefits, and many other basic rights. It is estimated that 153,000 children nationwide, including 24,500 in California, would see their right to citizenship eliminated if the federal government implemented the executive order. “Birthright citizenship is a bedrock of the American Dream,” said Assemblymember Lee. “We cannot let one President and his cronies abuse their federal powers, undo our long-standing civil rights laws, and redefine who becomes a citizen. AJR 5 shows the nation that the California State Legislature is committed to defending birthright citizenship, and the deep-rooted legal precedent set by the landmark Supreme Court case of Wong Kim Ark.” Birthright citizenship is guaranteed by the 14th Amendment, which was ratified in 1868 following the Civil War. It ensured those who were formerly enslaved the right to citizenship and states: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” Decades later, the Supreme Court Case of U.S. v. Wong Kim Ark in 1898 affirmed birthright citizenship to all those born in the U.S. During a period of anti-Asian racism, San Francisco-born Wong Kim Ark was prohibited from reentering the United States after traveling to China to visit family. Customs agents claimed he was not a citizen because his parents were unable to naturalize and ordered him to be deported. With legal support from the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association of San Francisco, he took his case to the Supreme Court and won. In commemoration of the 127th anniversary of the case, AJR 5 honors Wong Kim Ark's fight for the fundamental right of birthright citizenship, and the legacy that he leaves behind. The bill is sponsored by Chinese for Affirmative Action.

Got an idea for hands-on science experiments? A wild literacy adventure? Maybe a tech-art mashup? STORY 2: Mass shooting wounds five soldiers at Fort Stewart Chaos unfolded Wednesday morning at Fort Stewart, just southwest of Savannah, when five soldiers were shot in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area. The alleged shooter, Sgt. Quornelius Radford, 28, was apprehended by 11:35 a.m., thanks to nearby soldiers who tackled him before law enforcement arrived. Radford, assigned to the combat team, used a personal handgun—not military-issued. How he got it on base? Still under investigation. The five injured soldiers were treated on-site, then taken to Winn Army Community Hospital. Two were later transferred to Savannah’s Memorial Health, the region’s only Level 1 trauma center. All are stable and expected to recover. Gov. Brian Kemp and Georgia’s senators, Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, offered prayers and support for the victims and their families. The base went into lockdown within minutes, though it was lifted an hour later, except for the combat team complex. Investigators are still piecing together a motive. STORY 3: New exhibits, learning spaces part of $27 million makeover at Fernbank Museum Fernbank Museum in Atlanta is gearing up for some big changes—$27 million worth, to be exact. Announced Tuesday, the museum’s ambitious capital campaign promises to “revolutionize” how visitors experience science, nature, and history. What’s coming? A massive new permanent exhibit, Changing Earth, will explore our planet’s dynamic systems. It’ll be Fernbank’s largest exhibit ever. There’s also a new temporary gallery for rotating exhibits, an interactive Orkin Discovery Zone for hands-on science fun, and an expanded Star Gallery with fresh content about the cosmos. Located at 5030 Sugarloaf Parkway in unincorporated Lawrenceville, the expansion represents a $28 million investment and promises 70 new jobs. “This is about growth, people, and the future,” said Kimberly George, Senior VP at Alex Lee, during the Aug. 1 ceremony. The facility, part of the Sugarloaf Logistics Hub, is transforming the former Cisco campus into a bustling center for food distribution. Founded in 2010, Souto Foods specializes in Latin American and Caribbean products, cementing its role in Gwinnett’s international business scene. STORY 5: Falcons' Jalon Walker Returns After Minor Setback Falcons rookie Jalon Walker is back in action at Flowery Branch, shaking off a hamstring hiccup that sidelined him for a few days. The 21-year-old, a former Georgia standout and the 15th overall pick, is already turning heads again. Known for his versatility at Georgia, Walker’s starting as an edge rusher in Atlanta. “We’re focusing on his strengths first,” said head coach Raheem Morris. “Once he’s comfortable, we’ll expand his role.” Walker and fellow first-rounder James Pearce Jr. are building chemistry, hoping to anchor a defense that’s long overdue for a resurgence.
