Serie: The One op Netflix. Niks missen? Ontvang onze nieuwsbrief.

New Leak Reveals How Google's Next Android TV Dongle Will Work

Gadgets & Tech – Spoken Edition

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 11, 2020 3:19

Earlier this year, clues indicated that Google was working on a new streaming video dongle that would both replace the Chromecast Ultra and run Android TV. But now, thanks a new round of leaks, we suddenly have a much better look of what that device could actually be. Based on product renders obtained by XDA Developers (thanks to user deadman96385), Google’s dongle, internally codenamed Sabrina, sports a more oval-shaped body than the Chromecast Ultra and notably also comes with an included remote. This is a big change from Google’s previous streaming video efforts, because devices like the Chromecast Ultra require users to pull up content on their phones before casting it to their TV. The remote itself features a handful of buttons, including a dedicated Google Assistant button, along with buttons for Home, Back, Favorites, Play/Pause, and Mute. The device is also likely to come with an IR blaster so users can configure it to work natively with their existing TVs. Unfortunately, because the renders don’t show the entire remote, it’s unclear if the remote will also feature dedicated buttons for third-party streaming services like Netflix or Hulu (though that’s unlikely). Furthermore, it seems Sabrina will also run full Android TV, instead of being limited strictly to casting duties, with the screenshots in the renders suggesting that Google has some relatively major UI overhauls planned for its TV platform sometime in the future. Like a lot of other recent Google products, its TV hardware will be available in flat black and white, along with a pastel pink color reminiscent of the “Not Pink” hue Google introduced with the Pixel 3. And as you’d expect from a Google device, Sabrina is expected to support a wide range of Android TV apps, along with native YouTube TV integration and support for voice commands with a built-in remote microphone. Sadly, while previous reports claimed that this new Android TV dongle could cost as little as $80, there hasn’t been any additional details about when Sabrina will officially get announced or go on sale (though I’d bet sometime in the early fall). Still, considering that the Chromecast Ultra originally came out way back in 2016, a new streaming video dongle from Google has been long overdue, so it’s nice to see that Chromecast and Android TV fans could have something new to look watch out for later this year. And for people looking for expanded support for Stadia, Google’s new device could double as both a great video player and relay for their cloud gaming needs.

We expect this type of action in the fourth quarter of each year, but in late spring and early summer, we're usually on the hunt for things to talk about. That is just not the case at all right now. In a nutshell, we're talking through the release of the Lenovo Chromebook Duet on May 6th from Best Buy, the arrival of the Pixel Buds and our first impressions with them, the rumored Chromecast Ultra 2 with a remote, PUBG showing up for Stadia, and a new way Chromebooks might get a much longer lease on life. All that and we only covered half of all the stuff that went down this week. Check the show notes below, but also browse the main feed on the website to catch up on everything that has happened in the Google world this week. NOTABLE LINKS Lenovo Chromebook Duet preorder is back with a new shipping date A new Chromecast Ultra with remote running Android TV could be coming very soon New feature could greatly extend the life of your Chromebook's browser I took a break from playing PUBG on Stadia to tell you PUBG is now on Stadia The official Pixel Buds app is available on Chromebooks with a specific spec Boom! What is Google Stadia?

What is Google Stadia?Stadia is the name of the cloud gaming service launched by Google in late 2019. The American tech company observed the high levels of pollution generated by video game consoles and computers. That could be due to the production process or regular use by gamers. They decided to launch Stadia, allowing users to play on their TV, smartphone or computer without the need for any additional hardware. With cloud gaming, you just need to click on a link to set up a game from whatever connected device you’re using. In simple terms, the launch of Stadia aims to provide a viable alternative to PC gaming. Gamers have become accustomed to obtaining powerful PCs and consoles. The constant evolution of gaming graphics means many feel the need to regularly change equipment in order to keep up.With Stadia, image processing is handled in real time by Google data centers, so the computer simply receives the video stream. Gamers can therefore play high-quality games on a low-quality device, at least in theory!Google isn’t really known as a big player in gaming, so the company has to be commercially aggressive in order to make its mark. That’s exactly the aim of the Founders’ Pack, which includes a limited edition blue Stadia controller, a Chromecast Ultra, the game Destiny 2 and a free 3-month subscription to Stadia Pro, all for 130$. There are two regular subscription options, the first of which is Stadia Pro. For around 10$ a month, you get access to a limited selection of games. The second option, Stadia Base, is totally free. But image resolution is limited to 1080p while Stadia Pro subscribers get to play in 4K. Players also have to pay for every individual game they want to play. From: Charlie Smith I started listening to the podcast about 2 years ago, and have been hooked ever since. This podcast is most definitely in the top 5 best podcasts on my iPhone. Anyway, just writing to encourage you all, to keep up that great work, have as much fun as possible, and above all, keep up that laughter. From: Pat Hornell I just heard your latest Fan Mail podcast, and I took note of the comment someone made about not having a separate podcast for the Cool Picks. Personally, I like to have these separate podcasts the way they are right now. Sometimes I like to listen to the VIP, including the Cool Picks. However, there may be a Cool Pick that sparks my interest, and so I may come along later and just want to hear the Cool Picks without listening to the entire VIP podcast. So I hope you continue to do exactly what you are doing on this one. If anybody else doesn’t like the redundancy of the separate Cool Picks podcast, they can always delete that one. On another note, I just recently purchased a Google Home, and I have found it very advantageous to go to your web site and review all the podcasts and even the articles about the Google Home. They have been a great help for me to set up my Google Home device and also my Chromecast Audio devices. My next job will be to set up the Chromecast Ultra for my flat screen TV – not exactly 4K, but I am sure that will happen soon, as my wife, who is fully sighted, will surely want one of those soon. One point of caution I would like to mention, though, and it’s a minor one, but when you are doing the unboxing podcasts, make sure to keep tabs on your microphone. Most of the time, it’s pretty good, but there was one recent unboxing – I think it was for the Series 3 Apple watch, where Mr. Nelson got a little far away from his microphone, and so his voice became a little faint at times. Thanks for your fine podcasts. Keep up the good work. Your friend from the great White North, eh. From: Rebecca Skipper Are there accessible games designed for the Apple TV? Today's Episode Spectacles, that was not that big of a shock. It was an interesting move for Snapchat. This could help them boost their user base or turn into another Google Glass. There will be an issue with privacy and people not knowing if you are recording. I do not like the design of the glasses and think that might turn off some people. There is some innovation here and that should be noted. However, this is still an unknown.
