fWotD Episode 2868: 2020 Seattle Sounders FC season Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 12 March 2025 is 2020 Seattle Sounders FC season. The 2020 season was Seattle Sounders FC's twelfth season in Major League Soccer (MLS), the top flight of professional club soccer in the United States. It was the 37th season played by a professional team bearing the Sounders name, which had originated in 1974 with the first incarnation of the franchise. The team was under the management of Brian Schmetzer in his fourth full MLS season as head coach of the Sounders.Seattle were the reigning MLS Cup champions, having defeated Toronto FC 3–1 in the 2019 final at their home stadium, CenturyLink Field (renamed Lumen Field in November 2020). The season began with two home matches but was suspended on March 12, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic; the second Sounders match had reduced attendance due to the pandemic's spread in the Seattle metropolitan area. MLS resumed with a special tournament in July hosted in the Orlando area, and teams returned home a month later to play in matches behind closed doors. The Sounders only played 22 regular season matches, mostly against opponents in the Western Conference, due to a shortened schedule and several canceled matches. The 2020 Campeones Cup was canceled along with the 2020 U. S. Open Cup.Seattle qualified for the 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs as the second-placed team in the Western Conference, determined by points per game due to the unbalanced number of games played by MLS teams during the season. The Sounders defeated Los Angeles FC, FC Dallas, and Minnesota United FC at home to win a second consecutive conference championship and qualify for MLS Cup 2020, where they lost 3–0 to Columbus Crew SC.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 03:46 UTC on Wednesday, 12 March 2025.For the full current version of the article, see 2020 Seattle Sounders FC season on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Justin.
We continue to go behind enemy lines with the biggest threats in the NFC by chatting with our friend out of Philly Eliot Shorr-Parks, who apparently has not learned his lesson about the 49ers after the ass whooping they put on the Eagles at Century Link Field last year.
The boys start off talking about the Pac-12's new format for the conference championship game -- but soon do a deep dive into Beaver Football. There's a bit of everything in this episode: Beating out Jackson State for a recruit, getting a 4 Star Recruit from California, the hopes we have for Michael Penix and the Beaver fan that looked like Perez Hilton that humiliated himself in front of JoeEDangerously at Century Link Field in 2012. They also offer marketing advice to the UW athletic department, while serving up 53 seconds of Foghat hot talk so TheKnowledge won't go postal. What a way to head into the first tricky portion of the schedule. The Sounders improved to 5-0-1 on the young season by beating previously unbeaten Toronto FC 3-2 at CenturyLink Field on Saturday. It was easily the Sounders biggest test of the season and I'd say they passed with flying colors, especially when you consider they were missing Raul Ruidiaz. This sets up a pretty enticing matchup with LAFC on the weekend, who may well be unbeaten as well depending on tonight's result. If they are, this will be the latest in a season since 2010 -- and the second latest all time -- that two unbeaten teams have squared off in MLS. To help us preview that game, we'll be talking to Alicia Rodriguez of Angels on Parade later in the show. Not a bad way to start the season. For the first time since 2015, the Sounders won their first season opener, overwhelming expansion FC Cincinnati 4-1 in a match that probably could have been even more lopsided. Their four goals actually equaled their goal-scoring output of their past six March home matches combined and it featured Kelvin Leerdam's first goal since 2017, Jordan Morris' first goal at CenturyLink Field in nearly two years and Raul Ruidiaz's sixth straight game with a goal. All in all, pretty satisfying stuff.
