After a deployment in the Iraq War dually defined by threat and interminable mundanity, Joseph Thomas is fighting to find his footing. Now a doctoral student at The University, and an EMS worker at the hospital in North Philly, he encounters round the clock friends and family from his past life and would-be future at his job, including contemporaries of his estranged father, a man he knows little about, serving time at Holmesburg prison for the statutory rape of his then-teenage mother. Meanwhile, he and his best friend Ray, a fellow vet, are alternatingly bonding over and struggling with their shared experience and return to civilian life, locked in their own rhythms of lust, heartbreak, and responsibility. Balancing the joys and frustrations of single fatherhood, his studies, and ceaseless shifts at the hospital as he becomes closer than he ever imagined to his father, Joseph tries to articulate vernacular understandings of the sociopolitical struggles he recounts as participant-observer at home, against the assumptions of his friends and colleagues. GOD BLESS YOU, OTIS SPUNKMEYER is a powerful examination of every day black life—of health and sex, race and punishment, and the gaps between our desires and our politics Joseph Earl Thomas is the author of Sink, a memoir, longlisted for the PEN/Jean Stein Book Award, and shortlisted for the Patrick Saroyan International Writing Prize; the novel God Bless You, Otis Spunkmeyer, longlisted for the Carnegie Medal for Literary Excellence, winner of the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize; and the forthcoming story collection Leviathan Beach. Acclaimed author Joseph Earl Thomas spent much of his childhood watching everyone around him, trying to figure out where he belonged. He grew up attending public school in Philadelphia and constantly scanned the classrooms and hallways to avoid being beaten up by bigger, stronger boys. And throughout his adolescence Thomas was always trying to figure out what a man is and what a man isn't. Then he realized that he shouldn't even bother with those expectations. On this episode of Paternal, Thomas recounts what life was like growing in the Philadelphia neighborhood of Frankford, what he learned about violence and vulnerability from his grandfather, his own anxieties as a parent to four kids, and why he's reluctant to say his life story fits “the hero-story narrative thing” of Black kids finding success in America. Thomas is the author of the 2023 memoir Sink, which was dubbed “an extraordinary memoir of Black American boyhood” by the New York Times. Thomas' memoir Sink and his 2024 novel God Bless You, Otis Spunkmeyer are available wherever you buy books.

Our Seahawks did it! After Russell Wilson left following the 2021 season, the Seahawks have not been able to defeat the San Francisco 49ers. With Geno Smith's late game heroics, it led us to the reaction that we were looking for from Frisco fans. Doom! Talks about Kyle Shanahan deserving to get fired, star players getting too old, and playoff windows being closed -- we heard it all coming from our rivals to the south. The Seahawks defense was a huge part of the win. Several players had some of their best games of the season and it helped limit the explosive plays by the Niners that helped them win the first matchup in Seattle. Jaxon Smith-Njigba continued to stack offensive performances and was Geno's go-to guy on a couple key third downs. But the play of the game came from Smith on his game-winning touchdown run. Can the Seahawks keep it going at home against a Cardinals team that is riding a four-game win streak? Questions remain about whether or not Kyler Murray can continue to play at a high level as he tends to fade toward the end of every season. Or are we seeing the same issues now play out in Washington with Jayden Daniels and Murray's former head coach? Arizona Cardinals corners have been one of their biggest weaknesses on defense. So we can expect Ryan Grubb to test them early and often. In the second half of the show, we talk about one of the first public interviews from Earl Thomas in a while. It's a great week for him as we found out this week that he made it as a semifinalist on his first opportunity to make the Hall of Fame. However, one key Seahawks player from the Legion of Boom era didn't make the cut this year. We call out a former Seahawks reporter as well as a pair of Bay Area radio hosts in Do Better. Better at life nominees go out to a Niners beat reporter who is getting under Shanahan's skin and to the Seahawks defensive coordinator for getting some strong performances out of the defensive line. Puck and Danny go down the rabbit hole of talking about the Legion of Boom.   Devon Witherspoon is the closest thing to the L.O.B. that they have had since that group was on the field.  Expectations have now changed for the Seahawks and it's incredible to watch and follow this team week in and week out.  The Seahawks can be in first place this weekend which is incredible to think of! The Jets are still a disaster and Aaron Rogers has fired another member of the team.  Puck and Danny have put Rogers on “The Barge” out to the pacific ocean.  Where does Danny want Deion Sanders to land in the NFL next season?  Danny also answers fantasy football questions with “Waiver Wire Tuesday.”

What does literary realism look like in the 21st century—and what can it do? In episode 80 of the Podcast for Social Research, recorded live at Liz's Book Bar in Brooklyn, BISR faculty Paige Sweet sat down with fellow faculty and debut novelist Joseph Earl Thomas plus special guests, writers Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah and Vinson Cunningham, to talk about what it means, what it takes, and what it feels like to represent social reality in contemporary fiction. In novels that test the boundaries of realism, traditionally conceived—borrowing techniques from autofiction, speculative fiction, dystopia, satire, and academic non-fiction—Thomas (God Bless You, Otis Spunkmeyer), Adjei-Brenyah (Chain-Gang All-Stars), and Cunningham (Great Expectations) get beneath the detailed depiction of everyday life to discuss, among other things, the world-building that happens in every act of writing; how fiction can serve as a testing ground for theoretical commitments; the carceral nature of our social institutions and their ripple effects through our intimate lives; the violence that goes on under the guise of pleasure; and how to feel and depict life as precious in even the most devastating and dehumanizing conditions. Persons and things touched upon include: the US Constitution, bell hooks, Gayatri Spivak, Ruth Wilson Gilmore, Henry James, Solmaz Sharif, Saidiya Hartman, Goodreads, love, looking, “boundaries,” and beauty.  This episode was produced by Ryan Lentini.

Set over the course of a single, chaotic day in a North Philadelphia hospital, Thomas' novel unfolds across a multiplicity of geographies and timelines, and weaves together a dense network of human attachments in all their pleasures and pains. The conversation ranges widely as Abby, Patrick, and Joseph discuss what “trauma” means in popular discourse, literary criticism, and real-world trauma centers; the pleasures of food, video games, and genre expectations; Freud, the family, and authentic human connections sustained online; liberal narratives of universality and the dignity of work; the rhetoric of “boundaries”; and living and working through familial relationships that defy neat categorization and challenge us at every turn.Key texts cited in the episode:Elaine Castillo, How To Read NowOmari Akil, “Warning: Playing Pokémon GO is a Death Sentence if You are a Black Man, “ available at https://medium.com/dayone-a-new-perspective/warning-pokemon-go-is-a-death-sentence-if-you-are-a-black-man-acacb4bdae7fParul Sehgal, “The Tyranny of the Tale,” available at https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2023/07/10/seduced-by-story-peter-brooks-bewitching-the-modern-mind-christian-salmon-the-story-paradox-jonathan-gottschall-book-reviewSehgal, “The Case Against the Trauma Plot,” available at https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2022/01/03/the-case-against-the-trauma-plot Saidiya Hartman, Scenes of Subjection: Terror, Slavery, and Self-Making in Nineteenth-century America Mat Johnson, Pym Gayl Jones, Mosquito  Patrick Jagoda, “On Difficulty in Video Games,” available at https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/abs/10.1086/699585 Have you noticed that Freud is back? We discuss the frustration, because one team clearly had a plan for what they wanted to do and the other didn't. Or maybe they did have a plan, but it was completely out of order. Why does the rest of the team owe Geno Smith an apology? Adam breaks down, drive-by-drive, where the fault lies in how each drive got killed. One of our long-time listeners calls in to ask what we'd need to see from Geno Smith to know when it is time to move on in the middle of the season. There is a distinction between elite, very good, and everyone else and the pieces around the player that can have an impact. With the Commanders up next, it's a get-right game and Seattle needs to show they can get the run game going. With Geno among the top quarterbacks when running play action, the best opportunity for the Seahawks to finish strong is to do it with Ken Walker and Zach Charbonnet sharing the workload. But Washington could apply pressure to this Seattle defense based on the number of offensive weapons they have. The Seahawks weren't the only NFC West team with a limited amount of offensive production this week. With their backup quarterbacks playing, the Cardinals and Rams struggled to score points. Can Sean McVay get Carson Wentz to return to his former MVP form? A curse wheel and the ex-wife of Earl Thomas need to do better. Better at life honors go out to a team for closing out an historic rivalry in a fun way and for all the 12s hanging in there after a rough game. 2023 Podcast Pick'em League Support the show Get in the Flock!
