fWotD Episode 2868: 2020 Seattle Sounders FC season Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 12 March 2025 is 2020 Seattle Sounders FC season. The 2020 season was Seattle Sounders FC's twelfth season in Major League Soccer (MLS), the top flight of professional club soccer in the United States. It was the 37th season played by a professional team bearing the Sounders name, which had originated in 1974 with the first incarnation of the franchise. The team was under the management of Brian Schmetzer in his fourth full MLS season as head coach of the Sounders.Seattle were the reigning MLS Cup champions, having defeated Toronto FC 3–1 in the 2019 final at their home stadium, CenturyLink Field (renamed Lumen Field in November 2020). The season began with two home matches but was suspended on March 12, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic; the second Sounders match had reduced attendance due to the pandemic's spread in the Seattle metropolitan area. MLS resumed with a special tournament in July hosted in the Orlando area, and teams returned home a month later to play in matches behind closed doors. The Sounders only played 22 regular season matches, mostly against opponents in the Western Conference, due to a shortened schedule and several canceled matches. The 2020 Campeones Cup was canceled along with the 2020 U. S. Open Cup.Seattle qualified for the 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs as the second-placed team in the Western Conference, determined by points per game due to the unbalanced number of games played by MLS teams during the season. The Sounders defeated Los Angeles FC, FC Dallas, and Minnesota United FC at home to win a second consecutive conference championship and qualify for MLS Cup 2020, where they lost 3–0 to Columbus Crew SC.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 03:46 UTC on Wednesday, 12 March 2025.For the full current version of the article, see 2020 Seattle Sounders FC season on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Justin.

We're back and talking through US Open Cup, Campeones Cup, and the thicket of MLS playoffs, who has clinched, who is out, and who maybe still stands a chance. (We recorded before Wednesday's matchday but for once we actually proved slightly prophetic).
Another two game week for the Crew saw them lose Campeones Cup on penalty kicks to Club America and getting a 2-2 tie on the road against D.C. United. Sandwiched between the two games was a trip to the White House to be honored for their 2023 MLS Cup Championship. Brett, Murph, Bart, and Sam break all those events down and look ahead to the critical home stretch starting with Messi and Miami.

Inside LAFC Podcast Ep. 89 - Campeones Cup With Marco Garcés by LAFC
The season started with such optimism: Trophies to play for, history to make, and records to break. Yet here we sit, nearing the end of September and the end of trophy-winning opportunities, and we have absolutely nothing to show for it. In what has been a frustratingly familiar refrain in 2023, LAFC loses to another Liga MX club with a trophy on the line. This time, it's the Campeones Cup at the hands of Tigres, and in the worst way possible: on penalties. LAFC was pummeled out of the gate, as Tigres brought their aggressive style to all parts of the pitch over the first 18 minutes of the match. But as the match wore on, LAFC wore their bruises like badges of honor and began to stem the time and punch back. Coming out of the locker room at the half with a renewed sense of hope, LAFC began taking it to Tigres, until the 63rd minute. In that fateful minute, Chiqui Palacios would earn his second yellow of the match, resulting in a red and LAFC going down to 10 men. But from that moment, LAFC actually played... better! Stiffening their resolve, LAFC continued to take the fight to Tigres. If not for a second touch off a restart by Giorgio Chiellini, LAFC would have walked away with Campeones Cup after a 78th-minute goal. But alas, though the soccer gods did even the sides at 10 men a piece, they were unkind in PK's. LAFC would have two of their chances saved from the first four while Tigres would net all of theirs, and for the third time this season, we see a trophy slip out of our grasp. Also on this episode, we check in on Cifu, playing in three different competitions in Scotland, Scarf reveals his mafia ties and Oreo eating habits, and Filly makes up new words and phrases while reminding the world that Drew Fisher sucks. Come share in our frustration here on Episode 278 of Defenders of the Banc!
