Happy Holidays Beckerheads! On the 220th episode of this funny podcast feed, we became the best podcast about Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and the 1970 album Deja Vu. You don't even want to know how many dirty keys I typed in that opening sentence. Forget the music because the eggnog action is the juice on this episode when we chat about Christmas tree troubles, modern Christmas music, and tree topper etiquette. We also get lost in some hair-washing chatter. Then, at (1:09:00) it feels like we have a case of Deja Vu when we discuss Crosby Stills, Nash & Young, including relationships between the members, the band's harmonies, and the best hippie anthems of all time. Next week we're striving for perfection when we become the best Raekwon podcast and discuss Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...

Episode 166:New Version Of An Old One November 20, 2024 I hope you're well and ready for some music from a lot of West Coast bands today. You know, we dig into these great albums of the 60s and 70s and some of you younger listeners may not have been on the Earth at that time. You know, just a little gleam in your daddy's eyes? So hello to you younger listeners today . A lot of us were brought up listening to this music that we're gonna hear today and some of us are getting to hear it another time. If it's new to you, just dig it! I like to play many album cuts of mostly familiar songs but I do like to throw in some new songs or songs that we really don't hear that much back in the day. Oh! I never thought I'd use that phrase “back in the day“but there it is. We're going to hear from Crosby Stills Nash and Young, a Monkee, yes they can be trained, Nashville's Orleans and quite a number more. As always, I want to thank all the supporters of this program who monthly contribute through Patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport. I bow to you, thank you and invite everyone to check out how you can show your love for this awesome music of the hippie generation, whether you were there or just get down with the albums of that time. Remember that Tales Vinyl Tells can be streamed as it happens on RadioFreeNashville.org Wednesdays at 5 Pm Central time and all the episodes are listenable and downloadable on your favorite podcast app (I say probably), just don't try Spotify. They say it doesn't allow them to pay their millionth of a cent royalty to artists and I get that. So whatever they say, they remove it so you'll just have to listen elsewhere. Like Podbean.com or PlayerFM or maybe even StudioMillsWellness.com/tales-vinyl-tells. Take your pick or pick your take. Rock on, take care, stay well and be nice. BH

In 1968, singer and songwriter Graham Nash joined David Crosby and Stephen Stills to form the supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash. All of them had already been in successful bands: Graham Nash had been in The Hollies; David Crosby was in The Byrds; and Stephen Stills was in Buffalo Springfield. The next year, Neil Young joined them, to make Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. The four of them released Deja Vu in 1970, and that album was a huge success. It sold over 8 million copies. It includes the song “Our House,” and for this episode, I spoke to Graham Nash about the making of that song, and the relationship that led to the song. For more, visit songexploder.net/crosby-stills-nash-and-young.
“I am not a crook,” zei Nixon toen mensen het vertrouwen in hem begonnen te verliezen. Today, we bring you part 2 of the Big Sur Folk Festival, 1969. The BSFF occurred at Esalen Institute on September 13th and 14th of 1969, just about a month after Woodstock. As related in part one of this two part series, the festival was captured in a documentary called "Celebration at Big Sur," directed by Baird Bryant and Johanna Demetrakas - available on YouTube, a great watch. Set list for part 2: -John Sebastian, formerly of the Lovin Spoonful, with “Rainbows All Over Yours Blues" -"Woodstock" by Joni Mitchell, who accompanies herself on piano. -Some audio of an audience member, a school teacher who identifies as "a freak." - ”Red-Eye Express" performed by John Sebastian with Stephen Stills - “Malagueña Salerosa" by Carol Ann Cisneros - an extended ”Down By the River" by Crosby Stills Nash and Young. -“Sweet Sir Galahad" by Joan Baez - to end the show, "Oh Happy Day" by Dorothy Combs Morrison and the Combs Sisters, accompanied by Joan Baez. Some trivia about some of the musicians: -Joni Mitchell was dating a member of Crosby Stills Nash and Young at the time, Graham Nash. -Joni's song “Woodstock” was in fact inspired by the famous music festival, but she did not attend. Instead she opted to stay in New York City and appear on the Dick Cavett show. -John Sebastian: He was a founding member of the Lovin' Spoonful, known for hits like "Do You Believe in Magic?" and “Summer in the City." The Spoonful imploded after a 1967 marijuana bust. In the 80's Sebastian began writing and recording music for children's TV, including 1983's "Strawberry Shortcake: Housewarming Surprise" and 1985's "Strawberry Shortcake Meets the Berrykins." -Stephen Stills: a founding member of Buffalo Springfield who wrote one of the most recognizable songs of the 1960s, "For What It's Worth." Buffalo Springfield broke up in 1968, and Stills joined with David Crosby of the Byrds and Graham Nash of the Hollies to form early supergroup Crosby Stills and Nash. Neil Young wouldn't join them until August 1969, just a few short weeks before the performance that you're about to listen to. -Dorothy Combs Morrison won a Grammy in 1969 for her song "Oh Happy Day," which ends this episode - it reached #4 in the US and #1 in France that year. It was recorded in a church in Berkeley, California, a couple hours away from Big Sur. George Harrison stated that "Oh Happy Day" was a primary influence for his 1970 hit “My Sweet Lord.” -Joan Baez dated Steve Jobs in the 1980s. He was in his mid twenties and she was in her 40's. DIdn't matter. She was Joan Baez. At the time that Big Sur Folk Festival occurred she was married to an activist named David Harris, who was in prison in 1969 for refusing to serve in the armed forces. (In part one, we hear “Song for David,” written to her man behind bars.) During this performance, Baez is actually seven months pregnant; her son, Gabriel, was born in December 1969. Baez's performance of Pete Seeger's We Shall Overcome during the 1963 March on Washington is one of the most enduring images of the 1960s. In 1964, she publicly endorsed resisting taxes by withholding 60 % of her income. In 1972, Baez traveled to North Vietnam, to address human rights in the region, and was caught in a bombing of Hanoi, North Vietnam, during which the city was bombed for eleven straight days. Al Capp, the cartoonist for the strip Li'l Abner, created a character called "Joanie Phoanie" based on Baez - a communist radical who sang songs about class warfare but also rode in a limousine and charged outrageous performance fees to impoverished orphans. Beyond all of this, Baez is a genius songwriter and performer with a magical voice. She performed at each of the Big Sur Folk Festivals, beginning in 1964 and going until 1971. She still can occasionally be seen in the Carmel and Big Sur area. Ms. Baez, if you're listening now - come on back. There's a space at the Esalen baths with your name on it.
This week on Classic Vinyl Podcast, Justin and Tyler discuss and review Crosby Stills Nash and Young's 1970 hit song Ohio. Give it a listen and let us know what you think. Support our podcast and buy us a beer https://www.buymeacoffee.com/classicvinylpod
Feast your ears on this little gem from our archives - a partial recording of the Big Sur Folk Festival of 1969, which was also captured in a documentary film called "Celebration at Big Sur," directed by Baird Bryant and Johanna Demetrakas, from which this recording was culled. The Big Sur Folk Festival occurred September 13th and 14th of '69, about a month after Woodstock, and it featured some of the same performers, including Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and John Sebastian, who had left the Lovin' Spoonful the year earlier. The lineup, while not quite at the Woodstock level was still quite impressive, including Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, Mimi Fariña , the Flying Burrito Brothers, and Dorothy Combs Morrison, a gospel singer whose song “All God's Children Got Soul,” reached number 95 on the Billboard top 100 in October of 1969. Joan Baez, of course, has a long history with the Big Sur area and with Esalen - before Esalen was even Esalen, when it was still Big Sur Hot Springs or Slate's Hot Springs, she lived in Carmel and often came to the Hot Springs, where she could be heard playing her guitar and singing; she also had a friendship with the former Esalen gate guard Hunter S. Thompson. Baez taught her first workshop at Esalen in 1964, entitled “The New Folk Music,” which became the basis for the first Big Sur Folk Festival. The festival would reoccur each year thereafter until 1971. a couple of albums came out of the various festivals, including Celebration, From the 1970 festival, One Hand Clapping, from the 1971 festival. and Live at the Big Sur Folk Festival, featuring Kris Kristofferson's performance from 1971. This episode will comprise part one of the 1969 festival, and in our next episode we'll get part two. The setlist for this episode goes like this: Joan Baez singing “I Shall Be Released” , then “Mobile Line” by John Sebastian with Stephen Stills, followed by “Song for David” by Baez, and then “All God's Children Got Soul” by Dorothy Combs Morrison and the Combs sisters. Then we have a nice "Sea of Madness" by Crosby Stills Nash and Young, followed by an interesting scene where a heckler interrupts the performance taking place down at the Esalen pool and ultimately gets into a fistfight with Stephen Stills. This scene is pretty wild and you might want to refer to the actual movie for this one; it's available to watch on YouTube. Really a fun watch, especially if you've been to Esalen before and you want to see the property and how it looked in the late 60's overrun by 10,000 friendly young people. Then we get Stills doing "4 and 20," followed by a very young Joni Mitchell accompanying Crosby Stills and Nash with John Sebastian on "Get Together." At this time Joni was dating Graham Nash. You'll also hear her talking about spotting some whales off the coast. Then we'll end with Dorothy Combs Morrison kinda stealing the show with her cover of Put a Little Love in your Heart. I really hope you enjoy this dip into Esalen history and a glimpse back to the days when a rock festival cost four dollars to attend. Yes indeed. It's true.

Part of the Jessup genes have been past on to Mary, who along with husband Brent Gilbert have managed to secure a place in Mid-Michigan's jazz scene, with the likes of Easy Street & Co., Second Time Around, and their own duo, He Said She Said. Between Brent's lush guitar tones, rush Mary's unique vocal delivery, a stand out mid-state to those who love jazz as well as the likes of Crosby/Stills/Nash. Living in a city that has the highest number of shitty bands per capita than any other city in the US can be a real drag. Atlanta is a city full of bands and musicians that have underwhelmed me to the point of no return but there are a few exceptions to that. One of those exceptions is that outstanding band Rae and the Ragdolls. Rae and the Ragdolls are a band of young hippie misfits with old souls and a sound as classic yet fresh as the ‘60s and ‘70s bands that inspire them. Rae and the Ragdolls pull from influences such as the Grateful Dead, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, and Jefferson Airplane. Just don't go trying to compare lead vocalist Natasha “Rae” Wermers to Stevie Nicks. Rae and the Ragdolls are something very new yet very familiar. They are a band that I very much needed to hear and I'm so glad I stumbled upon them. I had the pleasure of talking with vocalist Natasha “Rae” Wermers and guitarist Will Bennett and they were so much fun to chat with. We talked about their love of the Grateful Dead and jam bands, why playing live is where it's at for them, and just how a bunch of youngins got into playing the fantastic music that the make! Enjoy, y'all!
Mit Crosby, Stills und Nash entstand Ende der 1960er Jahre eine echte Supergroup. Alle Musiker waren bereits vorher Teil bekannter Rockbands gewesen. Tambourine Man" kennen. On this episode of Vinyl Verdict, Bell, Jamie and Plouffe listen to Jamie's next pick, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young's "Deja Vu". Released in 1970, the album was one of the first albums released by a rock supergroup. David Crosby had previously been the guitarist in the band The Byrds, Stephen Stills and Neil Young had both been guitarists in the band Buffalo Springfield, and Graham Nash had been the lead singer of The Hollies. As a trio, CSN released their debut album in 1969, to immediate success and followed that up with a tour that included a stop at the Woodstock Music and Art Fair, where they were joined by Neil Young. Following this, they got together to record what would become "Deja Vu", between July 1969 and January 1970. Each member of the group contributed multiple songs for the album. The sole cover, "Woodstock", was written by Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell. Contemporary reviews were favourable, and the album sold 500,000 copies in its first two weeks, and then followed that up by spending 88 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. Today, the album is regarded as a classic of its time, with Rolling Stone naming it variously the 147th, 148th and 220th greatest album of all time, and the Library of Congress selected it as a significant work for its archive in 2023. But how will the boys rate it? Is it too of its own time for them? Come along and find out!

Stephen Stills is an American musician, singer, and songwriter best known for his work with Buffalo Springfield Crosby, Stills & Nash Manassas … and as a SOLO ARTIST. He was born in 1945 in DALLAS TEXAS. He is 78 at the time of this podcast's production. He is still active. He plays guitar, bass guitar, keyboards… he's not only a singer and songwriter… also an arranger and producer. Stills has had a long and prosperous career. Starting out in 1963, he has given us some 60 years of songwriting and musical performance. Today I FEATURE original compositions by singer songwriter Stephen Stills. From my collection we will hear 5 albums: Buffalo Springfield album and For What It's Worth, Buffalo Springfield Again album with Bluebird Stephen Stills' demo tape album JUST ROLL TAPE with Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, and Wooden Ships Crosby Stills Nash and Young's DÉJÀ VU album with 4+20 and Carry On And finally, the STEPHEN STILLS 2 solo album with Sugar Babe and Change Partners. We are now listening to ROCK AND ROLL WOMAN from BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD AGAIN. These selections were each recorded between 1966 and 1971. Just a small time slice of this singer/songwriter's career. Stills was between the ages of 21 and 26. These works are important because these songs are each hand crafted by Stills. I also wanted to showcase his array of talents like multi-instrumental musician, arranger, and producer. In addition to being a successful singer/songwriter, who work has had a large musical impact. Much more for future podcasts. M1 For What It's Worth (Stephen Stills), Buffalo Springfield, Buffalo Springfield, Released ATCO, LP 1969 (3:00) Stephen Stills' first HIT recording was FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH (or “Stop, Hey, What's That Sound”). It was 1966. Stills was just 21 years old. This was his first big break. He had written several songs, by now.. Not only did he have an inventory of original songs, he had helped to form a new band. Along with two other singer-songwriters, Richie Furay and Neil Young… they formed Buffalo Springfield out in Los Angeles. Neil Young came from Winnipeg Alberta, and Furay and Stills left a New York City gig with the Au Go-Go Singers, a 9-member group performing at the Café Au Go-Go. Two other Canadians -- bassist Bruce Palmer and rock drummer Dewey Martin were added --- 5 band members in all. 2 Americans, 3 Canadians. "For What It's Worth" became one of the most recognizable songs of the 1960s. It was first released as a 45 RPM single in late 1966. In t1967, For What It's Worth featured on the first Buffalo Springfield LP. The lyrics in FOR WHAT ITS WORTH are all about a confrontation Stills had with LAPD Riot Police in Los Angeles' earlier that year. There had been many summer nights of rowdy crowds of kids causing late-night traffic issues in the Sunset Strip neighborhood. LA responded by announcing a curfew of 10PM. As a result, there were reported to have been over 1,000 persons out on the Strip protesting and trouble broke out. There were clashes between police and young pe...

Earlier this year, an iconic voice in the music world left us: David Crosby. From the Byrds, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, his duo projects with Graham Nash, CPR, his solo projects and so much more, Croz continued to tour and create new music until the very end. For the past three decades, an integral part of Crosby's creative process was guitarist Jeff Pevar. On this episode of Inside MusiCast, Jeff joins us to chat about his relationship with Croz, including how they discovered each other back in the early ‘90s, along with stories about performing, touring, writing and recording with this iconic musician. Inside MusiCast is pleased to welcome back to the show, Jeff Pevar.
Sorry if the episode is out a week late again, but hey at least I got it out! In 1969, three ex-guitarists from mid-60s folk rock acts that had some chart success banded together to form a supergroup destined to top the charts. And that they did! They just need Neil Young and they'd be a decent group! Ok I'm joking with that one. Let's just talk about the eponymous debut by Crosby, Stills & Nash!
Edward Horgan began his determined life of peacekeeping as a member of the Irish Defense Forces, serving with the United Nations in conflict zones in Cyprus, the Sinai peninsula and the Middle East. Today, he works to recognize the names of war victims at Naming the Children, and was recently arrested and tried for protesting US military aircraft at Shannon Airport near Limerick, Ireland. Meet Edward Horgan, an antiwar activist giving it all he's got. Musical excerpts: "Working on a World" by Iris Dement, "Wooden Ships" by Crosby Stills Nash and Young.

He is the author of "NeuroTribes: The Legacy of Autism and the Future of Neurodiversity" - a widely-praised bestseller in the US and the UK. His TED talk, “The Forgotten History of Autism,” has been viewed nearly 2 million times online. Steve also won a gold record from the Recording Industry Association of America for co-producing the Grateful Dead's career-spanning box set So Many Roads (1965-1995), which was Rolling Stone's box set of the year in 1999. His liner notes have been featured in CDs and DVDs by Crosby, Stills, and Nash, the Jerry Garcia Band, and many other groups. As a young man, he was Allen Ginsberg's teaching assistant at Naropa University. On today's episode, Steve talks to Jack about the how The Beatles impacted his life, the importance of Sgt. Check out Steve's website: https://www.stevesilberman.com/ Follow Steve on Twitter: https://twitter.com/stevesilberman This episode is dedicated to David Crosby, who was one of the most influential musicians in rock history and a very close friend of Steve's. To the surprise of the world, David passed away just two weeks after this podcast was recorded. One of the reasons I started this podcast was to ask great minds such as David's how The Beatles inspired his music - and thanks our guest Steve Silberman and his recent phone call with David Crosby, that question is answered in today's episode. David will be sorely missed here on Earth, but as he once said, music is love. - and David has left behind a legacy of music and love that will live on forever. Or click here for more information: Linktr.ee/BeatlesEarth ----- The Beatles were an English rock band, formed in Liverpool in 1960, that comprised John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. They are regarded as the most influential band of all timeand were integral to the development of 1960s counterculture and popular music's recognition as an art form. Rooted in skiffle, beat and 1950s rock 'n' roll, their sound incorporated elements of classical music and traditional pop in innovative ways; the band later explored music styles ranging from ballads and Indian music to psychedelia and hard rock. As pioneers in recording, songwriting and artistic presentation, the Beatles revolutionised many aspects of the music industry and were often publicised as leaders of the era's youth and sociocultural movements. Led by primary songwriters Lennon and McCartney, the Beatles evolved from Lennon's previous group, the Quarrymen, and built their reputation playing clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg over three years from 1960, initially with Stuart Sutcliffe playing bass. The core trio of Lennon, McCartney and Harrison, together since 1958, went through a succession of drummers, including Pete Best, before asking Starr to join them in 1962. Manager Brian Epstein moulded them into a professional act, and producer George Martin guided and developed their recordings, greatly expanding their domestic success after signing to EMI Records and achieving their first hit, "Love Me Do", in late 1962. Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr all released solo albums in 1970. Their solo records sometimes involved one or more of the others; Starr's Ringo (1973) was the only album to include compositions and performances by all four ex-Beatles, albeit on separate songs. With Starr's participation, Harrison staged the Concert for Bangladesh in New York City in August 1971. Other than an unreleased jam session in 1974, later bootlegged as A Toot and a Snore in '74, Lennon and McCartney never recorded together again. Two double-LP sets of the Beatles' greatest hits, compiled by Klein, 1962–1966 and 1967–1970, were released in 1973, at first under the Apple Records imprint. Commonly known as the "Red Album" and "Blue Album", respectively, each has earned a Multi-Platinum certification in the US and a Platinum certification in the UK. Between 1976 and 1982, EMI/Capitol released a wave of compilation albums without input from the ex-Beatles, starting with the double-disc compilation Rock 'n' Roll Music. The only one to feature previously unreleased material was The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl (1977); the first officially issued concert recordings by the group, it contained selections from two shows they played during their 1964 and 1965 US tours. The music and enduring fame of the Beatles were commercially exploited in various other ways, again often outside their creative control. In April 1974, the musical John, Paul, George, Ringo ... and Bert, written by Willy Russell and featuring singer Barbara Dickson, opened in London. It included, with permission from Northern Songs, eleven Lennon-McCartney compositions and one by Harrison, "Here Comes the Sun". Displeased with the production's use of his song, Harrison withdrew his permission to use it.Later that year, the off-Broadway musical Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band on the Road opened. All This and World War II (1976) was an unorthodox nonfiction film that combined newsreel footage with covers of Beatles songs by performers ranging from Elton John and Keith Moon to the London Symphony Orchestra. The Broadway musical Beatlemania, an unauthorised nostalgia revue, opened in early 1977 and proved popular, spinning off five separate touring productions. In 1979, the band sued the producers, settling for several million dollars in damages. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978), a musical film starring the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton, was a commercial failure and an "artistic fiasco", according to Ingham. Accompanying the wave of Beatles nostalgia and persistent reunion rumours in the US during the 1970s, several entrepreneurs made public offers to the Beatles for a reunion concert.Promoter Bill Sargent first offered the Beatles $10 million for a reunion concert in 1974. He raised his offer to $30 million in January 1976 and then to $50 million the following month. On 24 April 1976, during a broadcast of Saturday Night Live, producer Lorne Michaels jokingly offered the Beatles $3,000 to reunite on the show. Lennon and McCartney were watching the live broadcast at Lennon's apartment at the Dakota in New York, which was within driving distance of the NBC studio where the show was being broadcast. The former bandmates briefly entertained the idea of going to the studio and surprising Michaels by accepting his offer, but decided not to. Live Aid was one of the biggest rock and roll concerts ever thrown. On July 13, 1985 dozens of some of the biggest acts in music performed at Wembley Stadium in London and JFK Stadium in Philadelphia to raise money to fight the devastating famine in Ethiopia. Organized in just 10 weeks, the show was attended by 72,000 people in London and 100,000 in Philly, while another 1.9 billion people in 150 countries watched the television broadcast. 95% of the televisions on earth at the time watched that concert. The show raised $127 million dollars. More than 75 acts performed, including Queen, U2, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Madonna, Tom Petty, the Beach Boys, Eric Clapton, Duran Duran, Judas Priest, Run DMC, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, and Santana. The Stones backed up Bob Dylan. Ozzy Osbourne reunited with Black Sabbath for the first time in 5 years. And Led Zeppelin played for the first time since Bonzo's death in a terrible performance with Phil Collins on drums. We're going to cover it all in this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll.
